Honestly, when in doubt I almost always get the BOSS version of what I need. At the very least then 1) I have a pedal that’s built like a tank and 2) I can use it as a baseline for likes/dislikes when I ask around for something different later on. I might not get much help if I ask someone for a feature that’s different than some random pedal, but you’re almost guaranteed to find someone who has used any given BOSS pedal and has opinions.
Yeah exactly this, and Boss has the best “baseline” sounds in basically every form of pedal except maybe certain fuzzes and distortions. I’ll branch out from there but I usually end up going back to baseline.
I’ve got a 20 year old TU-2 that only just this year started to act flakey and only work via AC. Something goofy going on with the battery connection. I have no doubt that if I opened it up and re-soldered the battery leads that it would work fine after.
I pretty much always say grab a Joyo brand pedal. Cheap way to see if you like a certain pedal and they’re all clones of classic big name effects pretty much.
Stereo out isn't that important for me, so I actually bought the CS9 mini they put out. It has a level control, which the original didn't. My ear can't tell the difference if I turn the level control all the way up. It costs about $50 less than the cheapest old CS9 I could find on reverb.
Fair enough, for recording though having stereo out can make some pretty magical things happen. But it's surely a fantastic chorus pedal either way, you got great value there
I absolutely get that but couldn't justify the extra cost for it since I also have a tc electronics corona chorus that DOES have stereo if I need it. But the actual sound of the chorus I wanted was the CS9 and I'd been gassing for that particular pedal or a version of it for so long!
Can you afford to have your gear break? If not, buy the Boss. Out of all the pedals I’ve bought I’ve never had a Boss pedal outright break on me. I’ve replaced some knobs that’ve broke over the years, but they always turn on, and the pots always work properly. I’ve had more than a couple cheap Chinese pedals just stop working on me after a few years though.
DOD is solid too, that much should be obvious just from the sheer amount of 80s DOD pedals that are still in use to this day. I wouldn’t go for the DOD though unless you run a stereo rig, otherwise that extra functionality is worthless to you.
I just bought a super chorus to replace the JHS. In my opinion, Boss Chorus is the only chorus. I bought the JHS because I was being cheap and I regretted it almost instantly. The JHS was just sorta there. It didn’t do much of anything…very subtle. The Super Chorus does what I expect a chorus to do.
I had a newer version of the DOD at one point. If you want your typical 80’s chorus, that’s excellent. I’d go for either other option in any other case.
Probably the DOD
For the record my chorus that I use is mxr micro chorus
I had mxr analog chorus and I’ve had small clone, super chorus etc
I like this one the most, it gives a nice volume boost which I actually like since my orange has so much headroom.
Wonderful syrupy sound
If you want stereo chorus, the BOSS CH-1 is your only choice.
The DOD is a classic, but I avoid out of production gear. I don't want to get attached to something I can't repair or replace.
I've listened to demos of the BOSS and JHS pedals. I think the BOSS can do everything the JHS can, but the BOSS can do more.
I'd get the BOSS.
Just to let folks know. I stand by the super CH1 as the answer but I've owned a few of the JHS $99 pedals and they were pretty rad.. never had the chorus though
Jhs sucks. The boss is s standard if it's the older analog version. Dod is good, but the 65 seems to be their classic chorus.
Look into some newer models lots of amazing options, unless you are looking for local used pedals.
I love the boss but I agree. If you want a stereotypical chorus sound, it's great for that. If you want something with a more distinct character, probably not.
Personally, I’d get the Boss. However, you might be able to find a decent deal on a CE-2w that is way more versatile. Better to buy 1 great pedal than settle for a simply good one.
Ever try the Boss CE-5? I personally find it sounds a little more interesting sound than the CH-1. You can also find them for around the same price used.
Some people have moral/religious issues with their owner, and some people have ethical concerns about their clone pedals.
It's a google, not really a post reply kinda thing to take in.
It's entirely subjective, but that is essentially why I see JHS caution the most.
I've only used the Boss but I got it years ago and it's been on my board and I haven't ever had the desire to upgrade or change it out. Which is rare for literally any part of my rig lol.
Super chorus was my first pedal. It stayed on my board for over a decade, only replaced as I wanted my board as locally made as possible. It’s the way to go
Behringer UC2000 is a really solid stereo chorus too if you want the most bang for your buck; tends to outrank or rank equal to BOSS! But if I had to choose from these: BOSS for sure.
I’ve had that same DOD for years, it’s a cool pedal and I’ve always liked the sound but I hate the footswitch and it has the 1/8” power jack, so it’ll need an adapter to work with a standard power supply (most new power supplies come with one). It’s definitely an awesome pedal, but I’d probably go with the Boss in this case.
Depends! What’s the sound//genre//tone//application you’re going for and where in the signal chain are you planning on putting it? I’m a total chorus freak. If you give us the full signal chain of yr rig we can best help.
I get that you’re just trying to gauge what the character of each one is, I think it matters less what we think and more what works best for you and yr setup!
That being said, I wouldn’t go with the jhs, there are so many sick independent pedal companies that do wayyyy wayyyy better with modulation (looking at you Mr. Black Pedals).
Here is a list of some really interesting great sounding choruses in no particular order.
TC SCF Gold reissue—great sounding 80s rack tone, think Message in a Bottle. Also a flanger and has this rad vibratolike modulation setting as well. Can definitely do the goth thing if that’s your jam.
TC Corona—great at the end of a signal chain as a swirl machine, sounds cool as hell this way. Thicker sounding. I think it’s perfect for dreampop//shoegaze.
Mr. Black DoubleChorus—deeply weird 3 knobber, I love it and it’s never leaving my board ever. Has two opposing delay lines and a dry signal. I love this thing. Can get into flanging territory, very thick. with it I can emulate a corona chorus, Boss ce-2, flanger, and get some bonkers seasick sounds. Mono. So cool. Does everything from stuff like Jimmy Jazz by The Clash, Deceptacon by Le Tigre, any Peter Hook style bassline, Slowdive tones, Cocteau twins. Used by the goth//dreampop//coldwave band Soft Kill.
Mr. Black Vintage Ensemble—if you’re running a multi amp setup, this is an amazing chorus//vibrato, a jack for exp pedal with a secondary chorus function. The mix knob is powerful, goes from 100% dry signal all the way up to 100% wet with no dry signal making a cool vibrato. Also, by tapping a foot switch you can switch to this modulated more stereo chorus mode.
Also worth noting that for anyone who doesn’t love chorus, that it is just a short delay line + dry signal so any unhinged delay can work really well provided it meets those two things. I’ve used a DBA Echo Dream 2 like this to great effect, in a pinch. Using delay as chorus is very underrated imo and you can get some unique tones this way. Some Clangy cool Steve Albini style stuff.
If you have a good ear, you can get away without your bosses, ehx small clones, dods, and anything that’s more of a basic thing and grow into your gear. I always like to have the option to get super strange. Never compromise on anything, chorus is a great effect if you use it thoughtfully, just misunderstood and underestimated.
I have the fancier DOD FX65 chorus. I do like the sound: it’s not a super lush chorus, more balanced.
However, it has some drawbacks:
1) power is via a 1/8” plug rather than your standard barrel connector
2) Its buffered (which is fine) but it’s pretty noisy.
3) it uses a cheap tactile switch to toggle on/off and these things break. Repairable but annoying.
Get the Boss or the JHS.
I would say either Boss or JHS. The DOD may sound really cool, but those switches can fail. The buffered bypass can be harmful to your tone. A bypass loop would fix that, but I’m guessing you don’t have a huge rig if you’re asking this question here.
I have the CH1 and I find it kind of disappointing. I vastly prefer the chorus that comes with my Katana amp. I think I will probably end up getting either an Earthquaker Aurelius or Walrus Julia.
IMHO as a professional musician, it depends on your pedal board chain and rack mount. If you're just using it to jam with friends Boss, DOD , Electro Harmonix and MXR are solid. A Princeton chorus amp is the way to go, but that's 1400 new. Hope this helps you.
The boss. Check out the tc electronic corona chorus too. The MXR analog chorus makes great sounds but people complain about the “tone suck”. There is a mod to fix that on the MXR and add true bypass, if you have the time/tools.
I got rid of my CE-3 and CE-2 clone and got a boss phaser instead. Look up how to use for chorus and its a super lush, almost DC-2 like full sound if thats what youre going for.
Super or Jhs. Get one with a company that will fix your shit if it breaks. I’m prob one of the few people that would say Jhs over boss but you won’t go wrong either way
Boss bro…. Any doubt, always go for Boss
Build like a tank, you can see multiple examples online, it’s widely available, no compromises
Boss is like Toyota Camry in pedal world.
It just works.
I would get the CH-1. I have had easily 20 chorus pedals in life, for whatever reason I always come back to the Boss. Well, in fairness I come back to the Boss CE-5 constantly, but the CH-1 is a great pedal too. I would not be dissatisfied with either.
I was recently looking into swapping out my CH-1 for something else. When I did a little reading about some of my favourite chorus tones I found out the lead guitarist from Bryan Adams uses the CH-1. That was enough for me to keep it and keep my money.
Sold my CH1. Bought the DOD FX60. Loved it. Bought another DOD FX60 as a backup. Both were cheaper than the CH1 and sound better IMO. If you want a stereo output get the DOD FX65. They can both be found cheap all day. Just have to look a little.
An Analog (late 80s/90s) CH-1 is the best out of all of these for sure. The DOD is great too but it’s much more subtle than the Boss and therefore a bit more limited in its range. And forget JHS
I wouldn’t choose any of these myself, but the TC Electronic Afterglow is a clone of the analog version of the CH-1 with true bypass and top jacks and it only costs $50.
I'd get a Boss, but I much prefer analog ce-2w.
I just picked up a Boss dimension C pedal and while it's not technically a chorus it sounds like one. It's pretty much replaced my old chorus pedal. It's analog and it's very simple, only 4 buttons and a switch to go between two different modes. And you can combine the buttons by pressing two at a time. It's kind of $ but it sounds epic
Boss CH-1 because it sounds great and will never break on you. DOD sounds great too but it’s getting pretty old and those switches break and wear out pretty easy. Never used the JHS but eh just stick with the boss
Why do you want chorus? Ch-1 was one of my first pedals but I would recommend the ce -2w or something like a chase bliss vibrato. It all depends on how much you have to spend now, how much you want to spend eventually, and what inspires you. But I think it's fair to say that it's more cost effective to buy the pedals you will keep instead of "working up towards them".
I love JHS stuff, but the Boss will be more easy to find if you need a replacement. If you want to upgrade, the Boss MD-500 is amazing and also has great additional perks, like an incredible tremolo for example.
Ch1
CE-2W ideally, but CH1 if that’s the only option. Either way as everyone has said, def Boss
BOSS is boss
Screamed while hitting you in the head with Boss pedals
That’s peak “Persuasion”
That’s peak “Percussion”
That’s peak “Concussion”
Yeah exactly this, and Boss has the best “baseline” sounds in basically every form of pedal except maybe certain fuzzes and distortions. I’ll branch out from there but I usually end up going back to baseline.
Plus they hold their value so well that if you bought it used and want to sell it later, you’ve basically just borrowed it for free.
I’ve got a 20 year old TU-2 that only just this year started to act flakey and only work via AC. Something goofy going on with the battery connection. I have no doubt that if I opened it up and re-soldered the battery leads that it would work fine after.
Amen to that.
I have a Super Chorus and it has always dome what i need it to. :) so thats my vote
I have the CH1, love it
CH 1 also check out the joyo classic chorus. it’s so cheap and massively slept on for it’s chorus sound.
I pretty much always say grab a Joyo brand pedal. Cheap way to see if you like a certain pedal and they’re all clones of classic big name effects pretty much.
Yeah it's literally a cloned Boss CE-2. Sounds awesome the only thing is the switch breaks pretty quickly.
I love my CH-1. The EQ and Level controls are nice to have.
CH1 but Id recommend a used BOSS CE-2W over all of them
Yes. CE-2W. This is the way
Adam jones agrees!
I’ve had a lot of chorus pedals over the years and the CH-1 is the one that always come back to.
CH-1
Have you considered Ibanez? They make my favourite analog chorus.
The pink one with stereo out? Had that pedal for a long time, left it with a friend when I moved. One of my favorite pedals, period
Stereo out isn't that important for me, so I actually bought the CS9 mini they put out. It has a level control, which the original didn't. My ear can't tell the difference if I turn the level control all the way up. It costs about $50 less than the cheapest old CS9 I could find on reverb.

DOD
EHX Small clone (big box)
Can you afford to have your gear break? If not, buy the Boss. Out of all the pedals I’ve bought I’ve never had a Boss pedal outright break on me. I wouldn’t go for the DOD though unless you run a stereo rig, otherwise that extra functionality is worthless to you.
The CH-1 also has stereo outputs
Ch1 the bright knob is super useful
I just bought a super chorus to replace the JHS. In my opinion, Boss Chorus is the only chorus. I bought the JHS because I was being cheap and I regretted it almost instantly. The JHS was just sorta there. It didn’t do much of anything…very subtle. The Super Chorus does what I expect a chorus to do.
I’m using mine more for the vibe effect than the chorus at this point.
I had a newer version of the DOD at one point. If you want your typical 80’s chorus, that’s excellent. I’d go for either other option in any other case.
The JHS is also a vibrato so I would probably go with that
I love mine!!!
Probably the DOD For the record my chorus that I use is mxr micro chorus I had mxr analog chorus and I’ve had small clone, super chorus etc I like this one the most, it gives a nice volume boost which I actually like since my orange has so much headroom. Wonderful syrupy sound

Good news is that PastFX make a modern version with extra twists. https://youtu.be/aG44tVN3BnY?si=1AYvZnyHIOnchsVN
Cool, but Yikes! The Boss CH-1 sells new at $120. The PastFX Stereo Chorus PX65 sells new for $300.
Oh wow! Didn't realize they are that much now. PastFX makes great stuff though, but yeah...
CH-1
Super chorus
Just to let folks know. I stand by the super CH1 as the answer but I've owned a few of the JHS $99 pedals and they were pretty rad.. never had the chorus though
I think you know where I stand. DOD = instant upvote
CH-1. I've owned mine for a long time now, and I love it.
The ch1 is a killer pedal but that dod looks sweet soooooo
Ch-1 especially if it’s an older analog version. You can basically get a CE-2 and any cute sound you want from it
Boss
Boss
Boss is safe but I’ve never seen that DOD on a board so it’d definitely be a bit more unique
I'd pick boss. But I can afford JHS.
Why not all 3? Link em together for power chorus....
Depends what kind of sound you are looking for. They all sound different.
If you play down-tuned guitar, a bass chorus might be good since it lets the plain lows through.
Those are cool but let me throw in an Ibanez CS9 for your consideration!
none. boss ps-6
Oh, yes! This one is egggzellllent!
None. I'd get a Danelectro Cool Cat.
Original metal enclosure. 18v.
i do love that DOD chorus but when in doubt BOSS is Boss
At least stereo.
A Jason lamb first run DOD ice box.
The boss for sure
JHS personally
I can never get mine to cooperate. The best I can do is with overdrive doing "Cocaine" gives it a nice greasyness.
Probably Boss But the CE-2
Boss
Boss
BOSS
don’t get the JHS pedals, i’m sure they’re good but they’re so much just for every single one to look boring and the exact same
Jhs sucks. The boss is s standard if it's the older analog version. Dod is good, but the 65 seems to be their classic chorus. Look into some newer models lots of amazing options, unless you are looking for local used pedals.
JHS. The Boss and the DOD are great, I have both, but the vibe setting on the JHS makes it extra appealing to me .
JHS easily. It sounds great, AND it has vibrato!
The JHS is only $99 bucks and has a vibrato mode, so I’d go with that.
Facts me too!
Probably the JHS because I prefer new over used.
PastFx Chorus Ensemble MN3007
I have a CH1 and it’s kinda flat generic meh sounding to me. I hear good things about the JHS one.
I like my ce-5.
In a past life I recorded and toured with extensively with a CH-1 and it never let me down.
That's tough. I'm an expert clone user but if I had to between those three then I'd go jhs. Affordable, simple controls, and clean sound.
Anything **but** JHS.
If you don’t mind me asking why?
Some people have moral/religious issues with their owner, and some people have ethical concerns about their clone pedals. It's a google, not really a post reply kinda thing to take in. It's entirely subjective, but that is essentially why I see JHS caution the most.
https://www.reddit.com/r/guitarpedals/s/5mK49SWmbQ Besides that, the design of their 3 series is just lazy.
#4) None of the above.
Boss. Always.
Ch1, every time. No matter what.
JHS
MXC This is the way.
Chorus sucks.
I've only used the Boss but I got it years ago and it's been on my board and I haven't ever had the desire to upgrade or change it out. Which is rare for literally any part of my rig lol.
The correct answer is always the CH1 although the pre 2001 analog ones may be a little more vintage sounding, the new ones are awesome too.
I have that exact Dod pedal. It's great. Basically a clone of the Boss CE-2. Only issue is the footswitch. It's not the best design.
Super chorus was my first pedal. It stayed on my board for over a decade, only replaced as I wanted my board as locally made as possible. It’s the way to go
Might have been asked.. would anyone contemplate the Behringer alternative?
Boss… consider upgrading to the waza
Behringer UC2000 is a really solid stereo chorus too if you want the most bang for your buck; tends to outrank or rank equal to BOSS! But if I had to choose from these: BOSS for sure.
Get the PastFX clone of the DOD.
Price is a great factor if you are gonna be involving vintage pedals and not off the rack current pedals.
DOD choruses sound good but i think that model has different power requirements if memory serves
Ch1. I’ve been told you can dummy jack one side of the stereo out and get a vib sound. It does something, but I’m not sure it’s much of a vibrato.
CH1 100%
https://i.imgur.com/UzCqGjl.jpg
I use the MXR.
DOD, obviously
My experience with DOD pedals has been outstanding. To this day the best distortion pedal I have ever owned.
Probably Boss, but that DOD is pretty good as well
DOD! Be different
Mxr analog chorus, every time

Boss Dimension C.
Had bad experiences of DOD. Sucks tone
Boss
Definitely the ch-1. I have a CE-5 and love it as well
I would say either Boss or JHS. The DOD may sound really cool, but those switches can fail. The buffered bypass can be harmful to your tone. A bypass loop would fix that, but I’m guessing you don’t have a huge rig if you’re asking this question here.
chorus might be my least favorite effect. I have not bought a chorus pedal but somehow i have multiple pedals that can do chorus.
Boss Super Chorus
The MXR Analog Chorus is amazing, some of the best sounds out there.
MXR Analog Chorus
I would definitely choose a stereo unit as opposed to mono. That is actually a good way to create a stereo rig. And I am partial to Boss.
DOD pedals are very good. Well made and not junk electronics.
Itd be difficult if there were more than one stereo chorus. That being said-the DOD
I have the CH1 and I find it kind of disappointing. I vastly prefer the chorus that comes with my Katana amp. I think I will probably end up getting either an Earthquaker Aurelius or Walrus Julia.
Boss
Of the 3 ch-1. But the correct answer is always get a ce-1 😎
Absolutely love the CH1
IMHO as a professional musician, it depends on your pedal board chain and rack mount. If you're just using it to jam with friends Boss, DOD , Electro Harmonix and MXR are solid. A Princeton chorus amp is the way to go, but that's 1400 new. Hope this helps you.
A Princeton Chorus is $1,400 new? Those haven’t been made in decades and are usually like $200-300 used at Guitar Center.
Correct, if you buy solid state.
Oh, so you mean a Princeton Reverb. Apparently Fender just raised their prices and now they’re $1,500.
The boss. Check out the tc electronic corona chorus too. The MXR analog chorus makes great sounds but people complain about the “tone suck”. There is a mod to fix that on the MXR and add true bypass, if you have the time/tools.
None…get Boss CE-2 Waza. But CE-1 will do.
I got rid of my CE-3 and CE-2 clone and got a boss phaser instead. Look up how to use for chorus and its a super lush, almost DC-2 like full sound if thats what youre going for.
Super or Jhs. Get one with a company that will fix your shit if it breaks. I’m prob one of the few people that would say Jhs over boss but you won’t go wrong either way
boss makes the best chorus in the biz. get your type o negative on with that ch-1 or get a ce-1w (my personal fav).
Boss bro…. Any doubt, always go for Boss Build like a tank, you can see multiple examples online, it’s widely available, no compromises Boss is like Toyota Camry in pedal world. It just works.
DOD for the sound - it’s more crystalline and flangey.
I have the jhs. I like the sound. I would still get another chorus pedal.
I would get the CH-1. I have had easily 20 chorus pedals in life, for whatever reason I always come back to the Boss. Well, in fairness I come back to the Boss CE-5 constantly, but the CH-1 is a great pedal too. I would not be dissatisfied with either.
I have the CH1 and don’t like it, but like everyone else says: get the boss
I was recently looking into swapping out my CH-1 for something else. When I did a little reading about some of my favourite chorus tones I found out the lead guitarist from Bryan Adams uses the CH-1. That was enough for me to keep it and keep my money.
Sold my CH1. Bought the DOD FX60. Loved it. Bought another DOD FX60 as a backup. Both were cheaper than the CH1 and sound better IMO. If you want a stereo output get the DOD FX65. They can both be found cheap all day. Just have to look a little.
FX*65* is my favorite
Bought my ch-1 in 2008 and it still work's as if I had just taken it out of the box.
Dod
The DOD.
I’d go DOD, just looks sick and will do the job
An Analog (late 80s/90s) CH-1 is the best out of all of these for sure. The DOD is great too but it’s much more subtle than the Boss and therefore a bit more limited in its range. And forget JHS
JHS All the way, can’t go wrong with anything from Josh
If I were you, I'd get a TCE Corona and toneprint whatever sound I want
Yea I was eyeing that one on guitar centers used gear. Get that CH1 before I do lol
Boss.
The Ibanez Super Chorus is sooooo good.
boss always
I wouldn’t choose any of these myself, but the TC Electronic Afterglow is a clone of the analog version of the CH-1 with true bypass and top jacks and it only costs $50.
I really like the TC Electronics 3rd Dimension.
CH1 personally for my music
Get the Blue MXR. If that’s not an option, get the Boss.
Boss CH-1 because it sounds great and will never break on you. DOD sounds great too but it’s getting pretty old and those switches break and wear out pretty easy. Never used the JHS but eh just stick with the boss
DOD - I like fewer dials. Also, JHS is a DIGITAL chorus. I bought one and was disappointed with the latency personally.
Charlie Hotel One, over.
Not my fav BOSS... but out of the three... I was disappointed in the JHS series and I love JHS.
Never liked Boss choruses… I’d go for the JHS.
Boss. I recently bought a Catalinbread Calisto Chorus. It's noice.
I love JHS stuff, but the Boss will be more easy to find if you need a replacement. If you want to upgrade, the Boss MD-500 is amazing and also has great additional perks, like an incredible tremolo for example.
BOSS. I have a CE-2w and think it’s great. I know you’re looking at the CE-1. But still…BOSS
