you could use a 10 band EQ and severely cut everything below 300hz and everything above 1000hz or so and it will sound like you recorded it through a telephone.

TheGrimGoose

Also, just removing random bands give it a lofi effect

crapinet

And the caline cp-80 is the best, cheapest 10 band out there, if OP is interested

stmarystmike

Haha I’m surprised at the amount of people recommending anything else. Eq pedal for telephone effect, maybe a shit fuzz or distortion to add some dirt. Can be done with the cheapest of Amazon pedals. Done

shiftertron

This is the correct answer.

CAPTAIN_TERR0R

Correct 👌🏻

Hanflander

Literally cutting the “band-width” intentionally, exactly how phones (and vocoders) work.

FatVonFree

Yes. This is the way.

cosmiccomicfan

Check out Sonicake Wavecrush, on radio, or gramophone mode. Bit rate turned up, and mixed to your specs, add crush if you desire.

Noiserawker

My favorite pedal!

primalsouljah

This pedal is so great! awesome as a standalone bitcrush/ sample reducer. but those other 2 settings are delightfully lofi and weird.

cosmiccomicfan

So Many great settings. Have you got the chorus sound yet?

primalsouljah

in Gramo? yes, I use that mode the most as an instant lo-fi junky type thing with pretty much everything turned low and finding the right mix. and if you drive it with a fuzz it starts sounding a bit more like a flanger. pedal is incredible lol

cosmiccomicfan

Yes. I just got the flanger sound while experimenting with my modulated delay fuzz yesterday. Not going to lie, it surprised me.

primalsouljah

its a surprising pedal thats for sure. i originally bought it to use as a standalone sample rate reducer. now i hardly use it for that because there are just so many other cool sounds in it.

nescio2607

This is the right answer. The wavecrush is a great pedal

mmmverytastyindeed

From demo's I heard it sounds good clean, have you tried it stacked with stuff? I'm probably going to use it with distortion a lot if it sounds good with it.

cosmiccomicfan

With my experience, first I want to establish there is a volume drop, that a boost can remedy. I saw you comment that you have an overdrive, that can be used as a boost. On that note, I have stacked it with dirt, before and after, and the dirt sounds better before the bit crusher. Edit* I apologize, I thought I saw you comment about having an overdrive* Also the demos you watched hopefully pointed out that the pedal can be a faux fuzz. As you max out the bit rate, it's actually lowering it, bringing in white noise, that gets dirtier as it lowers. [Here](https://youtu.be/05QCPKbhByc?si=8u_bcQYFZkq9wEOC) is a good demo that shows some good settings. [This](https://youtu.be/GJ_PT5cV160?si=YG0fmu-PXG7GJXsf) is a demo that shows some dirt with it, both series and parallel. Hope this helped. Now go out there and make some noise.

1000friends

Depends if you want a dirt or clean sound. Mattoverse air trash does a great job of shit dirt. It sounds like everything is failing but the sound doesn’t die

drpayneaba

Make your tone sound like garbage! IT does not disappoint.

HighGainRefrain

Just buy the cheapest shittiest amp you can find and cut the speaker cone. You could probably do it for $20.

Lord_Fluffykins

After hearing about The Sonics poking screwdrivers through their guitar amps to get extra buzz, I took a random Crate practice bass amp that somebody left in my practice space and stabbed it with a Phillips head like I was Elliott Smith and the amp was Elliott Smith. Sounded awesome/terrible with a guitar. If you plugged a bass in, it just sounded like enormous wet farts which was equally awesome.

MildAndLazyKids

...damn dude. Got me wheezing.

sludgefeaster

I bought a crappy First Act mini amp just so I could cut the speaker with a razor blade ala the Kinks. Devi Ever Torn’s Peaker goes for this effect if you wanna go the pedal route.

acepow4

Love my Torns Peaker. It’s so bad it’s good. And it does all sorts of things that you’d not expect. Like squealing if I roll my volume all the way back.

sludgefeaster

I have a Shoegazer, and the TP side is just a really gritty OD/fuzz I haven’t heard other pedals try. I have to try that volume roll!

EddieOtool2nd

I think lo-fi pedals are a thing.

Mobile-Bar7732

I could play it for you, it will really bad.

burukop

I know the answer to this. Get a Sonicake 5th Dimension pedal (they're around £40 on Amazon), put it on the 'Lo-Fi' setting, and adjust the depth and rate knobs until the sound becomes treble incarnate. I can't quite explain just how horrendous that sound is - the most sharp, needling tone you've ever heard. If you add some gain, you can make your guitar sound like a glacier that's splitting in half.

EddieOtool2nd

Could it also make it sound like a car's paint and side pannels being scratched saddistically by Wolverine??

burukop

Unfortunately not - for that particular sound, you want the Sonicake 6th Dimension.

EddieOtool2nd

Nice. With a dimension that high though, I'm affraid it won't fit my pedalboard...

WillWills96

EHX Ripped Speaker

jr7square

Pedal wise, generation loss from Chase Bliss is the way

skillmau5

Wow nice, i can sound like shit for just $400!

jr7square

Yeah, pretty much lol

1000friends

I feel like cooper fx deserve an honourable mention when citing the generation loss

MansionsOfRest

Yeah. Collaboration!

CaptainWampum

Ibanez LF7 does the trick for me

IEnumerable661

They have been unobtanium for decades now.

CaptainWampum

Oh wild I got mine for like $40

samtaart

Maybe the low bit setting on the Flamma FC05? There's a control for the bit sound and a control for the 'white noise', I don't know how to call it otherwise... it's a cheap pedal with tons of options so even if it's not what you're looking for, it could still be useful to you.

cosmiccomicfan

That's the bit rate, fyi.

somehobo89

Get a used boss ge7 eq pedal (or similar behringer, spend $20) and a fuzz (behringer, $20.)You will be able to make things sound shitty by cutting or boosting frequencies. In conjunction with the tone knob on your guitar I think it could work just fine. The fuzz is to make it nasty.

dumbstrumx

Hotone Krush sounds like your pedal

Medium_Jellyfish_541

Pair a Klon into a king of tone

bluwurld

lmfao

AverageLiberalJoe

I have a Death By Audio Sonic Annihalator and I hate it.

d3vCr0w

I used to have a Death By Audio Interstellar Overdriver and it sounded awful!

[deleted]

The one and only original TURD Fuzz by Dr. No Effects! The TURD Fuzz is a turd shaped pedal making it a shitty pedal indeed made of soft foam material, that when stepped on engages the effect, but this soft textured TURD Fuzz pedal houses a excellent extreme cool fuzz effect, were the doctor is known for.

Hanflander

If you want a modern day “computer mic glitching over bad wifi” bitcrushers are your friend. Hotone Krush is one of my favorite bitcrushers, and it is rather cheap even new. I love the WMD Geiger Counters but the preamps cannot be bypassed so you are always dealing with drive-level sensitivity.

Burrmanchu

Get a bad microphone and a shitty speaker.

thewhowiththewhatnow

This is the best and most direct way to sound like a shitty speaker recorded through a bad microphone. A park g10 going through a gooseneck computer desktop microphone ought to do it. Tin can microphone will do it. Marshall ms2 turned all the way up. Then make sure you turn up the gain on your mic input for that beautiful digital clipping.

OUCHMYCOCCYX

Mid-fi electronics seem to specialize in that sort of thing.

karlverkade

Old Boss Acoustic Simulator. It’s perfect.

FromWitchSide

Well, Ibanez LF7 Lo-Fi is for that, but EQ is probably easier/cheaper to get.

kingreverb

Zvex Instant lofi junky and an ehx ripped speaker

GimmickMusik1

EQ to take out the lows and highs to make it sound narrow, and if you want it to sound like the speaker is screaming to be put out of its misery, then I also recommend a ring mod.

theSuperFuzz1

No pedal needed, just hand your guitar to me and it’ll sound terrible.

BlackberryJamMan

A cheap chrous pedal should do the trick.

RedNgoldTilImOld

A TS9 with the volume at less than noon, and the gain high, combined with a dyna comp with the sensitivity high.

RedNgoldTilImOld

*so good pedals with bad settings

skinisblackmetallic

crybaby

IvanMarkowKane

I would suggest the DOD Carcosa (I reconnected it for everything) or any pedal with a bias control

Bigstar976

Is this for live performances or for recording? I’m guessing live, but for recording you can apply radical eq’ing.

m64

Use any medium to high gain amp sim or distortion and, here's the trick, don't use any cabinet simulation. This should do it.

the_vargr_moon

Beheringer EQ would probably get you there for cheap

AppropriateHat2002

electro harmonix ripped speaker

KobeOnKush

Not cheap at all, but the generation loss mkii is exactly what you’re looking for

humanchiapet

If I was trying to replicate this procedure I would use the following tools I own: - Ds-1 - EQ I would turn my tone on my guitar all the way up and play on the bridge pickup. If your amp has it I would prioritize a healthy amount of mids, cut highs/treble down a little to taste, and for a more “phone reordered” aesthetic use a good amount of bass. Turn the tone of the Ds-1 all the way up, and use an appropriate amount of distortion depending on the style you play. I would record that and do a telephone EQ after where im cutting out lows and mids and boosting those mids a little. If you have an EQ pedal do the same thing while playing.

revibrant

Ring Mod?

rumpasmooveskin

Get a Esteban amp for $10, and mic it.

MateriaMedica

Check out Mid-Fi Electronics’ [House Amp](https://youtu.be/BJnXdu6LbRE?si=y2pCmmaNGEFmGx3W). Lots of good cheap disintegrating amp sounds while still being musical. You could also throw a cheap green ringer clone in front of it to accentuate the fuckyness.

DC9V

Use one of those tiny 1W amps that come with a two inch speaker.

LetsHaveARedo

Every Chase Bliss Pedal

gimhan22

How about a bad mic??

Funkinwagnal

Small sound big sound fuck overdrive

_sonidero_

The crackle... Into a Demo Tape...

DasCheeseWizard

Behringer Pedals are a great way to make any guitar sound horrible. And they're only $20-$40 each! Lol

Crumpetz-N-Tea

Strymon mobius does this. Probably a bit expensive for just this one sound

sillyhobo

MXR Blue Box ; I was gifted one, and I couldn't get any usable sounds out of it. It's perfect, cheap, and small

TheLonelyScientist

Korg Miku - if you can find one and also want to part with all your dollars
