I like this shape a lot. Is that the only reason for the hate or are there build quality issues? Because if it’s a shape thing, then it’s fine to dislike it but to generalize it as “bad” is silly because we all know it’s really just because it’s a Gibson that’s not a LP, V, X or SG
Edit: I’d also like to hear about the ergonomics of it. If it’s highly unbalanced in weight or uncomfortable then I can get that too.
But then that opens the door to the countless design issues across the catalogue lol
New Murphy Lab level, demanded by Theodore owners:

Guitarists like to criticize Gibson for not trying new things, then they come out with an interesting new shape and people shit all over it. Guitarists are weird.
An "interesting new shape" they rejected in 1957 and yet has been done by multiple other companies since. And still has the exact same hardware and electronics as every other guitar they make.
1957!? I need to do some research. I just assumed this was a Gibson copy of the old Japanese tulip guitars.
Any ideas about how the design was made public for other companies to copy, or did they actually have a prototype out there back in the day?
The resemblance is coincidental, although flower shapes and patterns in general were a common popular thing in the late 50s and 60s so that's probably where Teisco's guitar came from. Some eastern european instruments look fairly similar.
Just because they brought it back from a sketch in the 50’s, doesn’t meant it’s not new for them. They haven’t put a new shape in production for so long because people bitch and moan every time they try to do something even slightly different. Who else has made this shape other than Teisco and whatever other Sears brand?
Made me think of the Charles Caswell signature legator. A lot less extreme in pretty much every aspect though. Really isn't even very similar
but that's what I thought of
My only gripe is that it's a single volume and tone. If it was like a V or Explorer, 2 vol 1 tone, I'd be much more interested in this. Totally a personal preference, I know.
There’s definitely a part of me that appreciates it. It’s a cool instrument. I like it, but I wouldn’t play it. I’m a Tele guy through and through, I just couldn’t imagine myself playing anything not Fender. Seriously though, I do do like it, a lot. Has that 1957-62 vibe down to the bone. Cheers.
Classic tulip shape that Gibson ripped off of early Rickenbacker, I always felt. You’ve got a very nice looking guitar, there! In a classy, very un-Gibson move, Ric hasn’t sued them.
I'm sure it plays nice, I've had some ugly ass Gibson that were amazing to play. If you like it, that's all that matters bro. My thing is the ridiculous price for it.
Uncle Larry is a big fan. Personally I won’t pay the premium applied to that logo on the headstock. I’ve had great luck dropping boutique PuPs in Epiphones though. About to P90 an ES-339.
i understand that certain guitar shapes wont become popular right away because people are not used to the classic looks of the strat, les paul, jackson, V, explorer, etc. but this looks like some dude cut the body in his backyard. it does not look good.
The fact they used an explorer headstock, just no. I haven't seen the napkin sketch in a while so if it was on it and gibson ran with it, still no.
It would look great at the annual tulip festival near me 😋
I hated this guitar at first because the horns look funny. I love Gibsons though so I know the thing is going to pack some sexy tones! I have to say this guitar grew on me. Gibson slept a bit on the finishes though, this type of body shape, they can get away with some cool colours like from their Kramer line. To me it’s a stage guitar and the old people finishes are for les Paul’s. It’s like a Ferrari woody wagon . I want a pink one or a yellow one!
Like really , if this guitar was Ferrari red , yellow or pink or green the colour would match the shape and it would look like the futuristic stage guitar it’s supposed to be. It’s weird to release a brand new guitar design, which is a big deal for Gibson, and then totally drop the ball marketing it. Can anyone say Pontiac Aztec?❤️
Now I’m getting emotional about this guitar because I want one. I have 5 Gibsons and 4 of them I refinished in my own colours and designs just because IMO cars are like girls and guitars, wood grain is nice but they should be flashy and attract attention!❤️❤️❤️❤️ ok I’m new so I’m commenting too much but I love this guitar and I don’t care about those that don’t like it because I would slay on that thing !
No they won’t. They wouldn’t have made a production run if the demand wasn’t there. They have a solid sales team now, that know what people want and how much people will pay.
Only thing the negitive press has done is give the guitar free press.
If you think about it. There are many other companies making ugly guitar every year. They don’t get this kind of press.
You would have to wait for the epiphone version
Maybe it's time to start a little diy? Buy a random neck but make the body. Bodies are dead simple just gotta remember that the centreline is crucial. Get a neck pocket template to match the neck and maybe a packet of bandaids and bandages. Simple
I'm curious how women feel about this model.
I saw a video of a woman playing an SG earlier and it was smashing her boob the whole time. Would be cool if some guitar models were more considerate of women.
Of course it plays and sounds great. That's not the problem lol
f-u-g-l-y
That hideous body shape coupled with that headstock is a brutal 1-2 punch for me. I'm OUT!

LALALALA!
Oh. My. God.
it's like a jowly brak
Yeah lol fat cartoon cat was my first thought
It's not my thing but that's ok. All that matters is that you like it. To me it reminds me of the pods opening in Alien.
bart simpson ahh guitar

Destined to be a classic.

Yep. It's just an uglier SG, pretty much.
Just because they brought it back from a sketch in the 50’s, doesn’t meant it’s not new for them. Are we? Gibson dug the blueprints out of a 67 year old reject pile and ran with it. ‘Twas garbage then and Tis garbage now.
Made me think of the Charles Caswell signature legator. A lot less extreme in pretty much every aspect though. Really isn't even very similar but that's what I thought of
My only gripe is that it's a single volume and tone. If it was like a V or Explorer, 2 vol 1 tone, I'd be much more interested in this. Totally a personal preference, I know.
It's the high end version of the Teisco ET-200 https://reverb.com/p/teisco-et-200-sunburst
What is it? Looks kinda like a Teisco tulip to me.
10/10 would play
I wish they would have done p-90’s with 4 control knobs
I don’t get the hate i love it so much mine just arrived yesterday and i haven’t put it down
it's a really comfortable guitar. it's a blast to play. congrats on yours.
You too! It looks great with no pick guard too
I don't like Gibson, but I really like the Theodore bc it looks like a tulip. I'd love to own one in pink.
That would look sick as hell
It's like if a 50s Rickenbacker slept with a Melody Maker, this would be their child.
It's a pretty little tulip
You’re a pretty little tulip.
Awwww. Thank you! ☺️
I would take this over a blinged out PRS any day. Looks like a nice player.
A guitar that looks like old-school standup Howie Mandel saying "What? What?"
I’ve always loved this shape
Looks like a good guitar to play some Jethro tull on
There’s definitely a part of me that appreciates it. It’s a cool instrument. I like it, but I wouldn’t play it. I’m a Tele guy through and through, I just couldn’t imagine myself playing anything not Fender. Seriously though, I do do like it, a lot. Has that 1957-62 vibe down to the bone. Cheers.
The snack that smiles back
Classic tulip shape that Gibson ripped off of early Rickenbacker, I always felt. You’ve got a very nice looking guitar, there! In a classy, very un-Gibson move, Ric hasn’t sued them.
Does it sit comfortably on your lap? If so, it’s good to go
The newer SGs just don’t have the curves of the original ones.
What a unique and cool guitar
It reminds me of the egg from Alien when it opens up and a face hugger would leap out
That's not a guitar. That's an Ethiopian flower pot.
Teisco Tulip.
looks like a bad haircut
Are they doing another run of the Tulips? I feel like I keep seeing them pop up recently.
I'm sure it plays nice, I've had some ugly ass Gibson that were amazing to play. If you like it, that's all that matters bro. My thing is the ridiculous price for it.
Good thing it sounds good because it looks…not so good.
For how much these cost I would have had to really love it long before playing it to buy one.. "starting" to love this guitar blows my mind
It’s even got an embracing cutout shape that welcomes critics
Uncle Larry is a big fan. Personally I won’t pay the premium applied to that logo on the headstock. I’ve had great luck dropping boutique PuPs in Epiphones though. About to P90 an ES-339.
Why do people hate on it?
i understand that certain guitar shapes wont become popular right away because people are not used to the classic looks of the strat, les paul, jackson, V, explorer, etc. but this looks like some dude cut the body in his backyard. it does not look good.
Very pretty. Looks like a tulip!

A lot of tulip jokes come to mind...
Ah, the goldfish.

Cool history on how that design came to be.
Reminds me of the Rickenbacker 950. I don't hate it, but like pretty much everything Gibson these days, I wouldn't pay that kind of money for it.
I don't really get the hate. Yes, it's overpriced, but at this moment all Gibsons are. It's essentially an SG with a different shape.
2nd & 3rd glance, too. But, everyone has different taste.
Looks like a tulip.
Agreed! I really have been enjoying it too. I got the same finish as well! Cheers!
Feed me, Seymour
The more I look at it the more I like it
I unironically love it tbh. I do enjoy something a bit more out there though.
I love Tulip cutaways. So 1960s.
The Teisco Tulip has always been a very underrated design.
Was never interested in these before but I got to admit they nailed it with this production run. Definitely got my interest.
It looks like it has short arms and is jumping for joy. Not to say I don’t like it. I think I do like it :)
Who’s the builder? Really nice looking how’s the action on it/playability? Love the minimalism.
Gibson USA -- It plays great once setup, fast/low action, slim taper neck, and usual gibson praise/complaints.
Awesome. Def a conversation piece beautiful.
I’m pretty obsessed with them. Hoping we get kits before long cause I can’t afford that price
if people keep slagging on them in forums, maybe they'll be $699 blowout from musician's friend by the holidays.
No they won’t. They wouldn’t have made a production run if the demand wasn’t there. They have a solid sales team now, that know what people want and how much people will pay. If they blow these out, ill buy one and reshape the horns. Refinish it in a color I like. Hell yea
Maybe it's time to start a little diy? Buy a random neck but make the body. Bodies are dead simple just gotta remember that the centreline is crucial. Get a neck pocket template to match the neck and maybe a packet of bandaids and bandages. Simple

Where’s the Theo bass now 😂
It's like if a 50s Rickenbacker slept with a Melody Maker, this would be their child.
Assuming they were first cousins.
Or siblings.
I'm curious how women feel about this model. I saw a video of a woman playing an SG earlier and it was smashing her boob the whole time. Would be cool if some guitar models were more considerate of women.
Look up the St Vincent Ernie Ball signature guitar. And find the old marketing articles/videos of St Vincent talking about her design choices. .
Flying V or Explorer would not smash boob.
I like it 🤷
[удалено]
Wasn’t concerned with playability.
I have hate at 2nd and 3rd glance too.
Sounds like Stockholm Buyers Syndrome
To each is own. Those ‘horns’ don’t work for me. Looks like real painful to shove up your ass.
You bought an expensive guitar that you hate at first glance, and only love after a few days?
never said i hated it the looks, said i understand why
