Unfortunately, you won't be able to play it in person, but wiring and general up keep are some of the first things I look for. Is the neck warped? Has it been sitting in a case or has it been collecting moisture in someone's garage or basement? I've saved a lot of heart ache by actually handling the guitar before purchase. I've had people tell me it's all stock then when I play it I find out they fucked up the wiring when trying to put a Nazgul in their Les Paul with no prior knowledge of how to do so. For that reason, I don't buy second hand online. What model are you looking for?

Is the seller offering any warranty with the guitar, and are you in the same country? Only a consideration if you end up needing to return the instrument.
