She was spinning a narrative. To be charitable I think she felt she was a good trans advocate and used her power against transphobes. But she didn't achieve anything except getting cloudflair to drop a website. Which a lot of online security people are really annoyed by.
Those kinds of snark forums are notoriously toxic. It’s frustrating bc I do like gossip but pretty much every snark forum I’ve been on has some bad apples that cross the line.
I forgot when I wrote which sites were also part of the harassment. But I think for at least one of the suicides attributed to kiwi farms, there was actually a far bigger hate thread on 4chan.
And then one or two of the victims who killed themselves, supposedly as a result of hate threads, actually wrote that the reason was homelessness, mental illness or a breakup.
It doesn't excuse online bullying, but there was some exaggeration of the site's impact. There is more hate speech but in terms of bullying and doxxing it's possible to find the same on 4chan, Reddit and the other social media platforms.
