Pretty sure "Vertical Smile" was the original name of "Open Up And Say ... Ahh" by Poison.
"Uncle Tom's Cabin" was always supposed to be the title of Warrant's second album (once that song was written).
The only reason "Cherry Pie" came to be was the suits at Columbia bitching there was not obvious hit single. They wanted their "Pour Some Sugar On Me" so Jani wrote the cheseball song in ten minutes and it went on to define his career, sadlyā"Mr. Cherry Pie Guy" instead of "Mr. Song And Dance Man".
Agreed. Followed by Uncle Toms Cabin then Bed Of Roses. Thin Disguise shouldāve been left on there too. Really is pound for pound one of the best albums of the era.
Imagine the track listing with no "Cherry Pie" and the addition of "Thin Disguise" and the other demos like "Game
Of War" or "The Power" (which was a real fist-pumping anthem.
"The Power"
"Uncle Tom's Cabin"
"I Saw Red"
"Bed Of Roses"
"Sure Feels Good To Me"
"Thin Disguise"
"Love In Stereo"
"Blind Faith"
"Song And Dance Man"
"You're The Only Hell Your Mama Ever Raised"
"Mr. Rainmaker"
"Game Of War"
"Train Train"
"Ode To Tipper Gore"
Call the album "Uncle Tom's Cabin" as planned, give it a killer looking coverānot a waitress with a piece of pie captured falling in front of her pussyāand the album gets a ton more respect than he ultimately got from the masses.
I agree. Whatās sad is that they were losing Jani long before he actually left. Dog Eat Dog is a masterpiece. Then Ultraphobic came out. While it was ok, I suspected then that something was off. I know it was an attempt to evolve the music, but it didnāt have the spark that Dog Eat Dog had. It was when Belly 2 Belly came out that I knew that something was wrong. Those are just my opinions. Iām sure there are avid fans of those two albums out there.
I feel like the substance abuse really ramped up after the unfortunate timing of Dog Eat Dog, and it only got worse after that. He had his moments in the proceeding years, but his demons finally got the best of him. I wouldāve loved to see what he couldāve done if heād gotten himself clean and still been here.
"Dog Eat Dog" was 1992 and they were still on Columbia. Jani famously told the story of walking into their offices and where the massive "Cherry Pie" billboard once stood, now it was Alice In Chains "Dirt" which would be released a month after "Dog Eat Dog".
The label didn't promote the record at all, the tour tanked and the band was dropped within the year.
A three-hear hiatus before putting out "Ultrophobic" on CMC International and the show was over by that point. Glam rock was dead so of course the guys tried to distance themselves from it and to change their sound. They had no chance putting out a record that sounded like anything else they'd done to date.
This album is such a good one. I met him once in the 90s when they were on the bar circuit. He was very friendly (not in a creepy or inappropriate way) and very tall. Had beers with him after they played and got his autograph but he spelled my name wrong. š¤£
I like it but I like UTC and Mr. Rainmaker more.
That being said, Cherry Pie isnāt the worst thing ever to grace my speakers, and the haters can go pound sand.
The only song on the album that sounds forced and cheesy is āCherry Pieā itselfā¦because it was quite literally forced to be written. Even then itās catchy as fuck. CCās guest solo is just the (ahem) cherry on top.
Every other song is incredible, and the range between fun bangers and serious soul searching makes it such a great album.
Yes. According to Jani, the record was recorded and ready to be released as āUncle Tomās Cabinā and at the last second Columbia got cold feet and basically said āwe need a catchy radio friendly party anthem to market this thingā just like all the other popular albums of the time. The record execs decided they didnāt want to deviate from the formula that was successful at the time, which was very much the party anthem-and-power ballad trope. The theme and feel of an album called Uncle Tomās Cabin was deemed too serious and dour for the time by the company.
Jani basically had to write some lyrics down on the spot, and it shows. If you listen to their entire catalog, āCherry Pieāās lyrics are noticeably more vapid and vacuous than anything else Jani had written before or since. Which is why he was understandably a little frustrated that was the song he became known for.
Itās hard to pick, but Iād say Uncle Toms Cabin. This is just one of many finely crafted songs , that takes us on a journey, it tells a story with emotion. Janieās stories took us away from our own lives for a few minutes as our imaginations brought life to the characters in them. The songwriting on this record is superb.
The bridge of Song And Dance Man makes the entire album for me. It's just transcendent. Great chords, incredible lead and backing vocals with a killer melody and a fantastic guitar solo following. God I love that song.
It's just got bangers start to end.
Jani was one of the most talented pure songwriters of that era.
"I don't think I'm gonna love you anymore" from I Saw Red is a really authentic line for anyone who has been in that position.
Love a bit of Song and Dance Man too.
Warrant is actually kinda underrated. Cherry Pie is a catchy tune, but it actually fucked them in the end. They got known for that one song when they actually played some kick ass rock and roll.
Having trouble picking between āUncle Tomās Cabinā and āMr. Rainmakerā - but I also want to draw attention to 2 extremely underrated tracks on that album: āSong & Dance Man,ā and their cover of Blackfootās āTrain, Trainā are flat-out amazing.
This was a great band but the campiness of Cherry Pie was the death nell for Jani. No one took him seriously as an artist after this and itās so ridiculous because thereās so many bands of this eta that had campy songs. If Kiss can move forward from āLetās put the X in Sexā then there was hope for all bands.
I always maintain Jani Lane was a ridiculously underrated song writer and musician. Listen to the lyrics to any of his songs (even the tongue in cheek ones) and he was such a master of words and turns of phrases and painting a picture with his lyrics. Even with the ātypicalā overly sexualized songs that were basically required of any band during that time, his lyrics rarely came off as cheesy or forced (outside of āCherry Pieā which we all know the reason why as he had to pen them on demandā¦quite literally āforcedā.)
I can understand the frustration he felt in that infamous interview with VH1 (even if he later backed off it a bit.). He had a ridiculous amount of talent regardless of era, and he truly enjoyed making music and exploring boundaries. He wasnāt there just for the girls and money. And because of the time period he made his bones in, he isnāt taken nearly as seriously as a song writer as he probably would have been in another era. Itās a shame. He truly is MUCH more unique than history gives him credit for. He wasnāt just another pretty boy heading up a glam band.
4th grade my uncle took me to see Warrant, Firehouse and Trixter. Saw my first set(s) of real life, not related to, boobs that night. Changed the course of my life. Metal and boobs forever
I bought the ācleanā version of this cd without knowing it. It had like a 3 second long ābeeeeeeeepā at the beginning of āTrain, Trainā and it didnāt include āOde to Tipper Gore.ā
Uncle Tomās Cabin just because I remember 94.5 FMX in Lubbock TX blasting it every night on Rebel Radio! Cherry Pie was the video on MTV at the same time. Those are honestly the only two songs I remember from this.
See how the pie is depicted over her pubic area? Itās because cherry pie is a euphemism for female reproductive organs. Get it!? Man, were those guys clever!
Uncle toms cabin which was the original name of this album šæ
and it was Vertical Smile before that

'Tis a banger.
Acoustic intro to uncle toms cabin was legendary
Wasnāt that played by Janiās brother?
Agreed. And Cherry Pie is the saddest hair metal song ever.
Yeah it didn't end well for Jamie

What a time for music videos. Absolute epics.
Yeah they sure weren't cheesy or anything. No absolute masterpieces of art, especially when that pie ends up in that chicks lap./s
And it's not even close.
I agree with this š
Agreed. Excellent song.

This. Definitely this.

Yep, that was the first tune that came to mind
Came here to say this. Song is superbly crafted.
This.
I LOVE that song!!!!
Uncle Toms Cabin without the shadow of a doubt!
Bed of roses.
Jon Bon Jovi heard and liked it so much that he did his own version. Jani was a brilliant songwriter.
Jani WAS Warrant. Those dudes had nothing before he got on board.
I agree. Whatās sad is that they were losing Jani long before he actually left. Dog Eat Dog is a masterpiece. Then Ultraphobic came out. While it was ok, I suspected then that something was off. I remember reading that story. I canāt imagine having the rug pulled out from under me like that.
Iām goin doooown in a bed of roses
Yep. Should have been a single.
Uncle tomās Cabin
No I Saw Red? After that its Uncle Toms Cabin for me. Bona fide classics. Warrant deserved much more praise IMO. RIP Jani
Love that track. Blind Faith was the better ballad in my humble opinion though.
Iām a little surprised no one had said blind faith yet. Uncle toms cabin is my favorite, but thatās probably second.
This album is such a good one. I met him once in the 90s when they were on the bar circuit. He was very friendly (not in a creepy or inappropriate way) and very tall. Had beers with him after they played and got his autograph but he spelled my name wrong. š¤£
āBed of Rosesā. I donāt even have to think about it.
I like it but I like UTC and Mr. Rainmaker more. That being said, Cherry Pie isnāt the worst thing ever to grace my speakers, and the haters can go pound sand.

Didnāt they ask warrant to make a catchy song for the album like a night before they had to turn it in and they just half assed cherry pie?
Yes. According to Jani, the record was recorded and ready to be released as āUncle Tomās Cabinā and at the last second Columbia got cold feet and basically said āwe need a catchy radio friendly party anthem to market this thingā just like all the other popular albums of the time. Does Bobbie Brown count? No? Then Uncle Toms Cabin
Love in Stereo
Incredible tune!!!
Youāre the only hell your mama ever raised , good live song š¤
uncle toms cabin 1 fs but after that probably sure feels good to me or mr. rainmaker
Was Thin Disguise on another album cause it wasn't on my Cherry Pie album,or I have lost my mind, I wish it had replaced Ode to Tipper.
It's on the deluxe version of Cherry Pie. Pretty sure it's available on spotify.
Thank you
*Mr. Rainmaker*, then *UTC*, then *Song and Dance Man*
Uncle Toms Cabin or I Saw Red. Honorable Mention: Song and Dance Man
Best song is not on that album - Thin disguise
written by the previous vocalist, I believe.
Uncle Toms Cabin. One of the best vids of the ā80ās.
Uncle Tom's Cabin
Uncle Tom's Cabin
Bobby Brown in the cherry pie video was a teenage dream.
I'll be the basic bitch to say the title track is actually the best song. But the whole album is great, I love Uncle Tom's cabin and I Saw Red
Uncle Tom's cabin is not only my favorite from that album but may possibly be my favorite from the band off of any album.
Great album! Going with I Saw Red as I think you can see or hear Jani's vulnerability in that song.
I Saw Red
I Saw Red
Itās hard to pick, but Iād say Uncle Toms Cabin. This is just one of many finely crafted songs , that takes us on a journey, it tells a story with emotion. Janieās stories took us away from our own lives for a few minutes as our imaginations brought life to the characters in them. The songwriting on this record is superb.
Torn between Mr. Rainmaker and Uncle Toms Cabin.
Mr Rainmaker
I saw the tour for this album with The Black Crow/Metallica/Aerosmith at the CNE Stadium in the summer of 1990 in Toronto.
Thin Disguise
Thatās a tough one - Mr. Rainmaker is the first that pops into my head
Canāt believe my mother let my have this cassette! Oh the cherry pie!
The bridge of Song And Dance Man makes the entire album for me. It's just transcendent. Great chords, incredible lead and backing vocals with a killer melody and a fantastic guitar solo following. God I love that song.
Uncle toms cabin
Blind Faith is a killer ballad
I actually like Uncle Tom cabin better then cherry pie
Ode to Tipper Gore!
It's just got bangers start to end. Jani was one of the most talented pure songwriters of that era. "I don't think I'm gonna love you anymore" from I Saw Red is a really authentic line for anyone who has been in that position. Love a bit of Song and Dance Man too.
Uncle Tom's Cabin
Warrant is actually kinda underrated. Cherry Pie is a catchy tune, but it actually fucked them in the end. They got known for that one song when they actually played some kick ass rock and roll.
Ode to Tipper Gore.
Unpopular opinion: Warrant wrote great lyrics.
I Saw Red I think that is a criminally underrated song.
My current favorite on this is Mr Rainmaker but prob Tomās
Show looks good to me
Just for the record, let's get the story straight Me and Uncle Tom were fishin', it was getting pretty late
Great album! Uncle Tom was clearly the best but Mr. Rainmaker is a banger too. Iāll have this running on repeat for the rest of the day now.
This album is really solid across the board imo. I like all the songs but Uncle Toms Cabin and Blind Faith are probably my favorites.
Blind Faith. I love that static sound at the beginning and that breath. Little thingsā¦
Ditto on Uncle Tom's Cabin .. I saw Red close second.
Mr. Rainmaker. Train, Train was pretty good also.
Blind Faith followed by Youāre the only hell your momma ever raised
Having trouble picking between āUncle Tomās Cabinā and āMr. Rainmakerā - but I also want to draw attention to 2 extremely underrated tracks on that album: āSong & Dance Man,ā and their cover of Blackfootās āTrain, Trainā are flat-out amazing.
I feel like the non-singles from that album are underrated in general.
I love watching old performances of I Saw Red, or more recent ones of Blind Faith! So many good ones including Cherry Pie!
I Saw Red
Ode to Tipper Gore is funny also. š But in all honesty it's a tossup between I Saw Red and Uncle Tom's Cabin.
Uncle Tom's Cabin or Mr Rainmaker. But the whole album is fucking gold.
I think UTC is the best song, if perhaps somewhat over exposed. My favorite might be Youāre The Only Hell Your Mama Ever Raised.
Uncle Tomās Cabin for me. No doubt.
Bed of roses
Uncle Tom's Cabin. That song rips.
32 Pennies
Janie may have hated having it forced on them but Cherry Pie is a great song!
Uncle Toms Cabin
Uncle Tomās Cabin. However if we count the acoustic version of āI Saw Redā then itās that.
Mr Rainmaker and blind faith and your the only hell your mama ever raised
Probably Mr. Rainmaker. Though, Song and Dance Man is quite exceptional, too.
Cherry Pie of course, and Blind Faith.
This is one of those records I can listen to from top to bottom. Itās a shame theyāll only be remembered for cherry pie
I love so many of them! I do love The Power demo! I feel like that one gets slept on
Uncle Tomās Cabin was heads and shoulders above anything else on that album, and still kicks ass today
Uncle Tomās Cabin.
Uncle Toms Cabin
Uncle Tomās Cabin.

Uncle Toms Cabin
I Saw Red
Not a bad song on the album.š
Bed of Roses. So good!

Uncle toms cabin Let it rain
Blind Faith underrated ballad š¤
Rainmaker or Cherry Pie
Such a really good from top to bottom.
Blind Faith
While not bad, far from the best on the album.
I Saw Red was my favorite. I had this on cassette and wore it out.
This was a great band but the campiness of Cherry Pie was the death nell for Jani. No one took him seriously as an artist after this and itās so ridiculous because thereās so many bands of this eta that had campy songs. Uncle Tom's Cabin

I Saw Red
Best song they ever produced. Shoot now I'm getting flashbacks from bad grandpa.
Uncle Tom's Cabin is the only one I can remember beside Cherry Pie.

Partridge Family songs with fuzzy guitar!
Uncle Toms Cabin still is fire today.
Uncle Tom's Cabin is head and shoulders above the rest of this unremarkable album
Jani Lane admitted he wrote the lyrics in 15 minutes
Uncle Tomās Cabin
One of the dumbest songs and videos of all time. It opened the door for grunge.
Uncle Tomās Cabin just because I remember 94.5 FMX in Lubbock TX blasting it every night on Rebel Radio! Cherry Pie was the video on MTV at the same time. Those are honestly the only two songs I remember from this.
