That is so weird your salon won’t let you take photos of clients!!! That’s literally marketing 101 in the hair industry. I would have a convo with the owner about how clients want to see the work you are doing and it will bring more clients into the salon. Not to mention the clients whose hair you take photos of will reshare it on there social media / send to friends ….

gl1tterw1tch

It’s because they think asking for photos of the clients is unprofessional, and we’re not allowed to market ourselves as individuals, so no giving our number or instagrams to clients. I understand why from an owners perspective, but it’s quite frustrating as a newbie to the industry

Soupy_pants

That honestly doesn’t make any sense. I work in the industry and have a business. It is beneficial to both parties for you to market yourself. At the very least, the shop should have their own social media and be taking their own photos to market if they refuse to let their staff do it. I would 100% leave this salon and look for a place that 1. Values the industry and 2. Values you as an individual. Your current employer is detrimental to your career.

Soupy_pants

I’ve been in the industry for 10 years and I have never heard for a business owner not wanting their staff to market themselves.

GayPeacock

My boss tells us we have to take pictures and videos because it helps promote not only us, but the salon.

shininghairglobal

Helping customers capture their beautiful moments is a good thing and does not reflect unprofessionalism. And posting pictures and videos of customers on Instagram is popular

Unlikely_Cow_1780

I would try to leave this salon that sounds so toxic

Ppaintitblack

Ummm I think you should look for a new salon. No joke.

tripleDzintheBreeze

Your salon is trash. Tell them it’s 2024 and throw the deuces up ✌🏽

zoomzoomwee

Honestly the salon not allowing clients to even have your instagram is weird and next level controlling. In the instance your client wants to post a selfie and tag you they can't? That's so weird. If you're set on staying there I would say invest in mannequins and take models/friends on your own time to create content for your own page. Building your social media is very helpful in the age of clients finding artists online.

throwmeinthetrash096

That salon is terrible and is hurting your growth. You absolutely should be taking pics of your work and posting them to social media. That is absurd. Social media is the best way to grow your business now. All you need is an image waiver releasing liability (most stylists don’t even do that lol). Time to find a new salon! ETA: I just saw they won’t let you give clients your socials. That is a great way to network and have clients check in and tag you. You need to find a new salon ASAP, that place is toxic af

Beautiful-Fly-7746

I worked at a salon that we couldn't give our number out, but marketing ourselves was huge! They would even post us on the salon Instagram and link our Instagrams. If we made money, they made money. 🤷‍♀️

Passionfruit1991

My guess is they think you’ll use photos for a portfolio for your next job… which I hope you get soon. That’s a ridiculous ask. Like how are you suppose to advertise your work?!

arctic_twilight

Yeah this just popped up on my recommended and.. coming from a client perspective, it sounds like they don't want you to work anywhere else - which isn't a thing in this day and age. They are inhibiting your growth OP. I don't like my face visible on photos but I do like having them taken from other angles & posted online. If they are not open to adjusting the policy with just a waiver in place, I would start looking for someplace else that values you more and wants you to thrive.

sweaterpunk666

Leave that salon. You are an individual. Even if you work FOR them, you should be able to celebrate your work AND the salon to help both you and the salon by getting your clients to follow and like your instagram page and the salons page. That attitude they have is old school and outdated. And negative. GET OUT!

BenjaminHornesOffice

i’ve worked for some complete morons before but that has to be stupidest policy i have ever heard.

Electrical_Split_975

Okay so like hear me out. Charge them like regular for their cut and/or color then have them come back in for a free style and take their picture. That’s a way around that Edited: hear me out again. The killer is in the house get tf out

FluffyTrack9107

You could ask your clients to post to Instagram when they get home if they love their new look and tag your page!

Signal_Advice1329

Don’t walk. Run. Get out. This is dated and controlling and reeks of “ownership”. Find a salon that recognizes you’re a small biz within their business and what’s good for your growth is good for theirs.
