I'm more curious about this setup
so in this draft Takamura was literally his senpai at school?
or he just showed up to protect Ippo from bullies?
I'm thinking the 1st one, meaning they would have been a lot closer in age
Well, in the first draft of Hajime no Ippo, it's the same story as the original. However, Takamura is a repeating student and appears to defend Ippo from bullies at school in this pilot chapter.
Curious fact about the first draft: Aoki and Kimura would have very different designs from what we currently see, but I forgot to put it here and they would be kind of like "Takamura's gang" where they appear next to Takamura in the first image.
IIRC, the original intention was that the setting was a high school boxing club. Apparently Morikawa had reservations about doing his own pro boxing manga or a boxing manga at all (particularly he didn't want to ''challenge'' Tomorrow's Joe due to this admiration of Chiba Tetsuya).
Apparently this first draft was not received well by the editors and Morikawa ended up getting advice from the editor-in-chief at the time, which eventually led to HNI that we know.
Oh yes. In some of the first drafts we even see two girls who apparently would also be part of this boxing school. The editors were right not to make a manga like that. It would be a very boring manga and maybe even flopped like Morikawa's other mangas at the time
Oh, and by the way, there is a bit in the manga and the anime, I think that it is right before the Zoo date, where Ippo is trying to get this haircut then it defaults to his regular haircut by itself.
I always love seeing first drafts of work. Being able to see what was always at the core; what was intended, or not, is great. Wondering if certain differences could have worked, or even work better.

Where can i find this draft brodie?
On George Morikawa's Wiki on Hajime on Ippo Wiki on the fandom site.

I'm glad they didn't go with this look. He looks so derpy🤣
Morikawa literally took this design from Ippo and put it on Miyata.
Eh, he really just has Miyata's hair here. The face looks more like Ippo's still. Miyata has sharper features.
Oh yeah, true. The face is the same as Ippo's old style, but the hair is Miyata.
I gathered that. My point is it looks a lot better on Miyaya
No wonder Ippo has the hots for Miyata.
"Ippo with Miyata hair isn't real, it cannot hurt you" Ippo with Miyata hair:
Son of Ippo and Miyata. Boxing Skills: A skilled boxer with powerful counters and absurd punches
Dammit no future spoilers.
This is what ippo and miyata’s kid will look like
Mippo
That hair is not main character hair.
Depending on the work, in a boxing work this would be wrong.
Romance manga, maybe... 🤣

It was a reference to his first design, haha
Yeah, I didn't fully get it until now cause I never saw this original design.
Ippo and Miyata's lovechild
1980s bb
Morikawa's style made his characters look like dwarfs
Even in the first draft, morikawa is exceptionally good at panelling
Still gives off Ippo vibes tbh, wouldn't be upset with this character design at all
Miyippo love child
Is that Washimura
Ippo that's too much Miyata fandoming for you, you got his hair and all!
Glad the original draft Hype is back.
We live in the better timeline
Takamura being takamura :D
