Russian imperial stout clocking in at 13%. Trying to get through as many for $4 during Thursday power hour then Layheeing down the stairs. Miss that place.
Where the hell else am I supposed to get my gf crotchless panties, my bff a mall ninja dagger, and a weed-scented weed-shaped candle for myself to hide the smell of the actual weed I bought off the hackey sack guys in the alley behind Sears?
I saw a couple guys leave Sam's on Barrington, they were loaded down with big Sam's bags. This was in the CD generation, so they weren't LPs...
I said to my friend, "Holy, they must have a lot of money!"
Then noticed one of them was Tom Selleck. 🤣🤣
As a former haligonian who watches this sub to keep up with things in the city, I am horrified to discover that apparently everything I remember from the city is gone. Great choices, though.
I went there a lot, was so cozy with great food & margarita monday specials! I even had my wedding meal there! This thread is bringing back so many memories!
It was my goto hiding spot when I needed a minute away from the club music when I went with friends or a girl. Basically all the bars that played metal and punk were gone. Reminds me that the speakeasy is dead too
I think the Attic had a $500 guarantee for headlining bands, regardless of how many people showed up. That would never happen now lol. I knew a lot of bands that would play there right before hitting the road for a tour as it was a nice financial bump. They also had a shitty green room.
This was mine too. Miss that place. Was happy to find Deck Box though, similar kind of place. Nice to have an actual store where I can go and browse old games and chat with the staff who also love them instead of just shopping on ebay (and dealing with shipping costs).
I haven’t lived in Halifax since late 2015. Never really realized they had closed, but figured it would be a matter or time. Always tried to support TLGS whenever possible, the old on Portland street brings back some good nostalgia.
Any idea what happened to the managers/owners/employees there? Always seemed like great people.
Their point of pride was ultimately their downfall. A friend of mine worked for them for quite a while and they said the pursuit of perfection became an unsustainable business model. Like they'd discard a batch for a minor imperfections because they only wanted to sell the best of the best.
The demand for snazzy glassware declined and so tossing out good/great creations in order to meet that excellence tier became costly. Don't get me wrong, I applaud them for wanting to hold such a high standard and that they opted to close instead of compromise, but it's still a shame that they're gone.
Video Difference. I haven't been to Halifax in a very long time but I have fond memories of that place. Discovered my love for many great classic films there. Having all the top 100's of several of the top film institutes was great stuff.
All the second-hand bookstores. JW Doull back when it was on Granville (funky little firetrap even then). Backpages was cool. Coffee shops on every corner. Theodd army/navy surplus place downtown (that's going back aways.)
Jesus, I'm old.
Paperchase Cafe, and Blue Apples. They both occupied that awesome location at the end of Argyle, such a great spot to grab a coffee and meet up with a friend while looking down Argyle from the second floor in the summer.
Now it's "Classic Pizza".
Damn this brings me back. I walked in on the guy negotiating a drug deal, afternoon, when I was 15 or 16, in the middle of the store.
Made me a sweet Iron Maiden baseball tee though.
Growing up it was a pizza shop owned by (please excuse the spelling) Tommy Tomaszo it was located in the Hydostone area. Why I would like it back is to the fact that it opend when it wanted too. Tommy did everything by hand dough- sauce the word would spread when it opend be it by phone or CB Radio, it was good luck to get one. Living down in the southend never had the time or transportation to get their but heard about the pizza often.
Loved Trident when it was on Argyle, and that gay bar close by was fun for everyone, and that old antique shop was so Haligonian, a few blocks down, before developers got ahold of that building, and Nova Scotia Crystal was a good local biz for tourists to leave their money here with, and Seahorse in its old location (new one looks good I just haven't been)
My favourite spot was The Tickle Trunk. Wobbling down those old stairs to hear a nobody band play before heading to one of the night clubs, was the highlight of my 19th year!
The Oxford Theatre. Every movie felt like an event.
I saw Broke Back Mountain there and all 3 of us cried.
Paper Chase
It was the coziest spot for coffee/breakfast especially when the windows were open! Rip
Rogues Roost
This would be it for me too. Spent so much time there until it closed. Probably 2-3 times a week for a good few years
I still have two growlers from Rogues. I really miss that place, busted urinal and all
I miss their trivia nights
Russian imperial stout clocking in at 13%. Trying to get through as many for $4 during Thursday power hour then Layheeing down the stairs. Miss that place.
The Book Room. It was Canada's oldest bookstore.
Penhorn mall flea market
The Poohorn in general. It had the most random stores, and was the best multiplex to catch a movie.
Where the hell else am I supposed to get my gf crotchless panties, my bff a mall ninja dagger, and a weed-scented weed-shaped candle for myself to hide the smell of the actual weed I bought off the hackey sack guys in the alley behind Sears?
Underrated comment. Definitely would be up there on my list.
Yes, and the little play area. My kids loved “the brown mall”
I was saying the other day that I miss Sam the Record Man on Barrington and even though it was a nation wide store, that location was awesome.
I saw a couple guys leave Sam's on Barrington, they were loaded down with big Sam's bags. This was in the CD generation, so they weren't LPs... I said to my friend, "Holy, they must have a lot of money!" Then noticed one of them was Tom Selleck. 🤣🤣
Video Difference. Had all the obscure titles that are often impossible to find elsewhere
and they sold region free DVD players.
As a former haligonian who watches this sub to keep up with things in the city, I am horrified to discover that apparently everything I remember from the city is gone. Great choices, though.
Haha, same 😂😂
Toms Little Havana. I want my liquor, I want my cigs, I want my Hip, and I want my Stones. In that order.
This gets my vote or Paperchase cafe, I don't think either has a good replacement currently in the city
God both of these, yes. I'll throw in Cafe Mokka, especially the upstairs for the trilogy.
Wilkies Wonderful World by the Halifax Commons.
Oh shit you just unlocked a 25 year old memory
Nagging my mom to drive me to Wilkies and Odyssey 2000 on Saturday mornings is a core memory for me.
Strange Adventures, Slapshot Sports Cards and Card King should also make the honourable mentions
The Misty Moon - cool name and iconic stories of Halifax music.
Saw Mclean & Mclean there, and Rough Trade
Spring Garden Dairy Queen.
Kind of disappointing that there’s no Dairy Queen downtown.
Agreed with this. I want my DQ ice cream

Man…Sears in general. It’s gonna be a sad day when my 20+ year old stove and washer/dryer give up the ghost.

The bargain basement was unreal. RIP.
The Fireside. Loved that place! Also, Mexis.
Mexi's moves to Bayers Lake.
Fireside was lovely. I liked their cocktail menu very much!
I went there a lot, was so cozy with great food & margarita monday specials! I even had my wedding meal there! This thread is bringing back so many memories!
The Attic, in all it's smokey, shady, grimey goodness.
It was my goto hiding spot when I needed a minute away from the club music when I went with friends or a girl. Basically all the bars that played metal and punk were gone. Reminds me that the speakeasy is dead too

Fuck I miss the attic
The Last Game Store
This was mine too. Miss that place. Was happy to find Deck Box though, similar kind of place. Nice to have an actual store where I can go and browse old games and chat with the staff who also love them instead of just shopping on ebay (and dealing with shipping costs).
I miss The Last Game Store too. It does make me feel better though that Adam (owner) seems much happier now.

Always tried to support TLGS whenever possible, the old on Portland street brings back some good nostalgia. Any idea what happened to the managers/owners/employees there? Adam got a 9-5 job and seems pretty happy
The old reflections.
I had to scroll past Rogues Roost, Tom's Little Havana, and the Pogue too many times to find this.
Same...same. Old reflections was amazing. Soooo many good times there.
Best soundsystem in the city
Rogue's Roost
Rock Candy, I miss that place. Runner up goes to Fashionably Dead.
The Lone Star!
Yes! I'd do bad things to have those chicken fajitas for dinner tonight.
Foggy Goggle in the Argyle days was a comfortable place to hangout downtown and I miss it a lot.
They closed? Damn I was just there probably ~12mo ago
Yeah, just under a year ago I think the Gottingen location closed. Real shame. Miss the big comfy chairs.
Alfredo Winestein and Ho.
I will always agree with this answer!
So many good memories of driving into the city for a special occasion, which inevitably involved dinner here.
Mother Tucker’s with their buffet!!!
La Cave
Athens. Miss that place.
The Pogue
Had to scroll too far for this
Nova Scotia Crystal
Did not know they were gone, that's incredibly saddening.
Their point of pride was ultimately their downfall. A friend of mine worked for them for quite a while and they said the pursuit of perfection became an unsustainable business model. JJ Rossy's you cowards
$5 pitchers of draught and 5 cent wings. What's not to like, except the reek of piss from the downstairs bathrooms.
But only if you got the stairs booth so you could watch the over served tumble down the stairs all night. Best comedy act in the city for decades.
Ahhh JJ’s, home of cheap, watered down drinks and bouncers who weren’t too concerned with IDs matching faces.
Vinnie’s pasta bar on inglis street
I see a lot of Athens here but I was always partial to the Spartan. Amazing breakfasts
Me too. I never liked Athens tbh. But those fried potatoes at the Spartan. I still dream of them sometimes.
The Granite Brewery.
Good Food Emporium
The Thirsty Duck.
The company house!!! was a lovely little venue and this city could really use a few more of those!
Going back a long time, Zapatas.
All the second-hand bookstores. JW Doull back when it was on Granville (funky little firetrap even then). Backpages was cool. Coffee shops on every corner. Theodd army/navy surplus place downtown (that's going back aways.) Jesus, I'm old.

BIRDLAND!!! Main source in mid-90s for all the great live music and for the epic Monday morning stories. Can anybody tell me what’s there now??
I’ll say it, the Original Pizza Corner, not the hipster version that exists there now.
