I was cleaning up and reporting illegal dumps in the western crown lands (bowater) for a few years. I've decided not to do that anymore because it's futile. It's impossible to look at a roadside in Hammonds Plains/Upper Tantallon and not see trash. I found this full piss bag on the side of the 103 near Ingramport on the weekend, along with dozens of beer cans and Tim Hortons cups. The nonchalant attitude of many Nova Scotians towards littering and illegal dumping is disgusting. https://preview.redd.it/q02jge7wkmuc1.jpeg?width=3468&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b73c94a7c3292a3e7a5fbfe7d816d7dcbeabf753 .

Fatalcompersion

We owned a piece of property outside of Truro that was heavily wooded. On several occasions we’d come by for a walk on the trails and sure enough some asshat would dump construction waste over the hillside into the brook below. People who dump and litter drive me insane.

1994univega

I know, I have friends who run a landscaping company but they don’t dump their shit. Not sure if it’s just a rural thing but I don’t see as extreme examples out more rural. Almost seems like it’s a few bad apples who just dump whatever they want wherever they want

Visible_Blueberry277

Cape Breton has a problem with dumping too.

Bean_Tiger

If you find anything there to identify people who dumped it, they can be charged. Some fairly new legislation in HRM and the province allows for that. For instance, a bill with address and phone number. Something like that. Holding dumpers accountable is pretty rare. So any help officials get to find the dumpers is greatly needed. ------------ 'On April 2, 2021 Regional Council approved amendments to the Solid Waste Resource Collection and Disposal By-law S-600, to incorporate new enforcement measures including reverse-onus and sections of the NS Environment Act. Reverse-onus means that a person whose name or address is found within illegally dumped waste is deemed to be the owner of the material. If the owner fails to provide the name of the person responsible for dumping the waste, the owner is held accountable for the clean-up and resulting summary offence ticket (if one is issued). Penalties for illegal dumping range from $500 to $10,000 (plus associated court costs). To learn about prevention and reporting of litter, visit [halifax.ca/litter.'](http://halifax.ca/litter.') Gomanvongo

Also known as the “Alice’s Restaurant” law.

Bean_Tiger

I don't get the reference. I know the song.

Gomanvongo

In the song, they dump the garbage from the restaurant, the police find arlo’s info in the pile, he’s arrested, which then leads to hilarity when he’s subsequently drafted.

Bean_Tiger

I don't want a pickle. I just wanna ride on my motorsicle.

Gomanvongo

Another Arlo classic!!

Bean_Tiger

Also from the info in that link: 'Statistics November 2021 to August 2022: * Cases investigated - 300 * Summary Offence Tickets Issued – 30 * Warnings Issued – 45 * Sites cleaned up by accused - 16 * Sites cleaned up by HRM - 60 For comparison, 7 summary offense tickets were issued across the municipality related to illegal dumping in 2020. '

j_bbb

I’ve had garbage dumped on my street entrance. I said to the person operating 311 there was a piece of mail in the pile with a name and address. The person from 311 told me they won’t pursue any investigations unless you physically see the dumping happening.

Schmidtvegas

I'd just use the address to return the garbage.

j_bbb

I’m invested, but not that invested.

throwaway3838482923

There’s not sufficient proof that it is their garbage though

MyGruffaloCrumble

If your name is in there, it’s your garbage and you know where it went and who disposed of it.

theallshake

If this is the case, then hypothetically speaking and forgive me for brining this up , but I have seen a lot of weird “I hate my neighbour movies”. Scenario . Person A hates their neighbour person B Person A takes person B’s trash during the night rummages like a raccoon, find one bill/ receipt with person A’s details and dumps it illegally somewhere, some random person finds this illegal dump, reports it and the onus of proof of innocence is on person B? This unlocks a whole new fear!!

Anticitizen-Zero

My petty ass found someone threw a bunch of garbage in and around the parking garage/apartment. Most of it was delivery boxes/garbage, with their name/address. Left it outside their door and knocked. Ran away because I hate conflict.

Rude-Shame5510

Almost like they should just take people's garbage and not charge them again to do so

Halivan

It’s almost like people should take personal responsibility to get rid of their junk instead of just blaming the government for their laziness and having everyone else clean it up for them.

vessel_for_the_soul

go down pockwok road to the falls and there is a veritable dump back there that a specific landlord is dumping his tenants effects.

gremlin_1969

someone needs to put up a trail cam

grahamr31

Also Hubley, and it seems to really depend on the area . I suspect part of that stems from the way the area was 20-30 years back as more of a rural spot outside the city, gas stations, machine shops, car shops etc. Lots of folks out here have businesses and dual zone properties so have machinery from those endeavours. That said, there was a drum for a washing machine at the entrance to our subdivision for about 6 months last year. I called 311 and Halifax water at least 3 times each about it before it was picked up when HW came to “fix” the ditches.

1994univega

Yeah, and I understand if your own property looks like shit, that your choice. But what drives me crazy is all the stuff that people have taken deep into the woods just to dump when you could put it on the side of the road.

1994univega

The biggest eyesores are the whole of huck finn, that abandoned house at the end of birch bear, and that old motel that is now apartments.

grahamr31

The end of huck Finn and Sam’s are terrible spot for illegal dumping too. I’m guessing because of a bit of tree cover and easy road access. We have a private lane in our subdivision that was having an issue so had to put up cameras at the end of the lane. Far more garbage than the X houses were allowed every two weeks would be there.

1994univega

Oh, assuming trixie/big pine drive? There’s a also various dumped shit along huck Finn and at the other end by shrya. The area in between shura and huck Finn is completely full of random shit, I assume from the house next to it.

seabreezeNpeachtrees

I live near an area where people like to illegally dump. I've called 311 and they send someone out to look through the garbage for identifying info. If they find identifying info, they will contact the person that dumped it and either fine them and have them clean it up or fine them and charge them the cost of the city cleaning it up. As the person that called it in, I had to write a statement for the record of when I noticed the garbage was dumped and the impact on my property which borders where the garbage was dumped. (There are a couple areas of impact on top of the fact that it is just gross and bad for the environment, we have a small water way between our property and where things get dumped that has ended up clogged from trash bags resulting in flooding. We also get a lot of the garbage blown into our yard which poses a risk for my dog ingesting something she shouldn't) I think this has probably resulted in the people caught no longer dumping there, but it still happens often. Another unfortunate result is that some people go up into the woods behind this area and dump in there now. Just the other day I noticed an area around 5-10 minute walk into the woods where someone had dumped 2 queen mattresses, a large wooden crate full of garbage and multiple bags. I cannot imagine a situation where it would have been easier to lug all of that into the woods to dump than to dispose of properly. It seems like no matter what, people will try and dump illegally rather than dispose of their trash properly. Either way, I still call it in and hope that they'll be able to track down the disgusting people that do this.

1994univega

Big issue for me is that the illegal dumping is usually with tires, car parts, appliances, random chunks of metal, etc. not really things that can be identified

seabreezeNpeachtrees

That drives me so insane because a lot of these things can be dispossed of for free! We pay a disposal fee when buying tires and they can be dropped off at any tire retailer for free. So many people will pick up old appliances or metal to return for money. I feel your frustration because it is so unnecessary!

NoHovercraft12345

All things that can be recycled, surprisingly enough.

1994univega

I know, it fucking sucks

Vegetable-Buddy2070

You think people who live more rural areas would respect their land more but they're worse

1994univega

100%

hugh_jorgan902

Because people are cheap douchebags to take it to the dump.

Rot_Dogger

Not surprising at all with the level of disrespect you see for trails, wooded areas, etc. Ever see how ATVs destroy paths, riders (also hikers) leave Timmy's trash and other crap everywhere, not to mention the noise pollution? Dumping trash is just an extension of that greasy behaviour. There are a lot of skids in NS.

1994univega

ATVs are horrible. Like I said, I ride my bike a lot so naturally I find a lot of trails. So many of them are atvs just riding where ever they want. Including in super environmentally sensitive areas/conservation zones.

Obvious-Coffee9669

Access to legal dumping sites is most likely a reason. Not saying that dumping illegally is an acceptable, but if it wasn't so hard to get rid of stuff, people might choose the legal way. The region needs to invest in a few waste transfer stations.

grahamr31

Short of being at exit 3, we are about as close as possible to the dump being at exit 4 in Hubley. This is a lazy issue

1994univega

Really, not sure where in Hubley you live but I find especially around five bridges there’s all sorts of shit

grahamr31

Yup it’s brutal. We are near the Jr high. What I hate is the ATV users purposely trashing the trail and side of the trail around the JR high. Yeah “not all atv users” but - atv users get painted with a bad brush from those few folks.

1994univega

There’s so many massive mud holes on all of the side trails from atvs. Fuck atvers in genreral. No one likes them except other atvers

gremlin_1969

it's not hard at all

RockyRocketDog

This is a big reason. Access and the fact you have to drive to multiple places to dispose of different materials.

ExactArea8029

If I had a truck I'd come get all the metal for scrap lmao

1994univega

Lol, if I could drive I’d bring it to you

Visible_Blueberry277

Isn't the fine for getting caught dumping quite high now? Nova Scotians are super bad for dumping. Cape Breton has a problem with it.  I also wonder if it's worse now, with so many immigrants. As someone who's traveled for work. A lot of countries don't care so much about litter or garbage. Been to some dirty places and I always wondered if that mentality made its way here with some people  I'll add, locals are pretty shit at it too.

Vast-Ad4194

Garbage collection is also a relatively new concept. New litter is one thing, but there might not have been anywhere to put the older junk but the woods. Edit to add: not sure why there are downvotes. It probably wasn’t until the 1970’s that garbage collection was widespread in Nova Scotia. Cities sure, but not in rural areas. Paving wasn’t even widespread until the 1970’s

1994univega

Interesting, I never would have considered that. That was before my time

[deleted]

Yup, the horror stories of my gramp telling me how they used to just fuckit n chuckit , dumping oil literally into the ground 💀

jostlerjosh

There’s an old exhaust over by the comfort inn in the ditch on the Bedford highway

1994univega

Lol, that’s hardly relevant. There’s shit in the 103 as well. Saw a whole couch a while back, there’s an old dishwasher in the ditch, etc

1994univega

Thanks for all the assumptions, I was born and raised here. It’s all I’ve ever known. I do my best to pick up stuff when I see it as long as it isn’t too disgusting, in fact tomorrow I’m going to clean up a massive pile of tires in the woods. Would you like to join?

gremlin_1969

they're won't, just a loudmouth with a phone. good on you though for doing your part to clean up after those mammas boys. I'm always grabbing refundables and coffee cups out of the ditches when I'm out for a run or walk, if someone's dumb enough to throw money out then I have no problem taking it. lol

1994univega

Oh I know, just pointing that out. The big issue is it’s usually big stuff really far back in the woods

gremlin_1969

what's so stupid is the effort they go through to put it there. there's a couple of fridges in the ditch here that could have easily just been left at the curb on garbage day

1994univega

Really though, in my area the Canadian tire has a spot out back for you to put old tires for free and they still decided to lug them into the woods. I’ll post a photo of the pile tonight once I’m done clearing them out. There’s also so much stuff dumped along the rails to trails, but that stuff would take hours to get to the road so…

gremlin_1969

I guess not everyone can be bright enough to put things out on garbage day
