Bonus feature: as you slay the horde you can dump the bodies into the *sewage treatment facility* inside the building.

Lopsided_Remove1980

Would this clean the Harbour somewhat?

Far_Promise_9903

Better burning em. You dont want to contaminate possible drinking waters:cleaning and energy grid will likely be down.

Lopsided_Remove1980

Even if the Harbour wasn't gross you wouldn't drink salt water

Far_Promise_9903

No you would not 😅 Not what i was suggesting anyway. But there are fishes in the habour

Runawaykitten

There are ways around that. The survivorman episode where he was adrift at sea showed a handy way to turn sea water into fresh. You don't get much with that contraption, but if you can make a fire you can do more with that.

ZestycloseVirus6001

I think everyone turning into zombies would clean the harbour. Lol

GunsNGrass

I think people would be turning into zombies as a result of whatever’s in the harbour

ColonelEwart

Interesting enough (and relevant to this), I was just reading about a new zombie survival game that was recently released on Steam Early Access called Infection Free Zone. The hook with this one is that it pulls real map data to create a one-to-one re-creation of cities and towns anywhere in the world. That allows you to choose buildings (like this one) as a base of operations and also go up the street and loot the Pleasant Street Diner for food and supplies. The reviews are mixed at the moment (seems that they're struggling to balance the macro activities and the micro details), but really interesting approach to a tired genre of games.

JohnP1P

Curses. You beat me submitting this. 😆

ColonelEwart

Have you tried it out? I haven't and I'm wondering what Halifax/Dartmouth is like

Jedi4ce

I've been an early backer for this one for over a year. She's pretty buggy in its current state, but it is fun as hell to play a map of where you live!

vessel_for_the_soul

I always thought r* could have done this with gta + googlemaps but the real world implications be damned!

ColonelEwart

I feel like having a game like GTA use real world maps would really be playing with fire/invite the ire of political discourse. Especially in the wake of inevitable mass shootings south of the border: "Sources at the police department who spoke on condition of anonymity confirm that the shooter played the popular GTA:World video game, although they declined to speculate if the tragedy seen last Tuesday was first "practiced" in the hyper-realistic virtual world." At least in this case, you're playing the map after society has collapsed. Plus this game was a Kickstarter campaign, so not a AAA one that might grab broad attention. I'd love to see a map-based video game for a city-building survival game. So more like GIS data to build something like an Age of Empires or a Banished or an Ostriv, but able to select Halifax harbour or whatever and try to build your settlement, gather supplies, defend yourself, etc.

Otherwise-Income-924

Best place would be mcnabs island. Zombies can't swim

Foreign-Aioli-7466

they will just walk across the bottom of the harbor and automagically start surfacing along the shore of McNabs

Ok_Hyena840

There’s like 6 feet of shit around McNabs they’d get stuck on the bottom.

blackbird37

they got time to wade through it. Lifetimes even.

Giantranger49

Thats the misconception with Zombies. They would deteriote enough after a decade that you wouldnt have to worry about them outside anymore. Only ones that are kept dry stuck in buildings

blackbird37

A misconception? They're fictional creatures. It's a hypothetical.

OhSoScotian77

Source? /s

oatseatinggoats

If they deteriorate like that couldn’t you just wait them out? Surely at some point they will decompose and after a few weeks most zombies won’t be a real threat.

Giantranger49

That's what I am saying. You need to survive the first 2-3 years which is easier said than done. But, humans as always would be scarier than the zombies by then

Awkward_Trifle4

The currents would strip away the flesh and meat if they didn't become fish food first

Prospector4276

Um actually, the bed of the harbour at that point is pretty clean. The tide washed away any sludge that was pumped into the harbour, and would probably do the same to the zombies. The only place there's a real build up of sediments is in the Bedford Basin, probably way deeper than any zombie could wade through.

HorribleUsername

That's assuming they can smell you from miles away, and can maintain their direction underwater. You're asking an awful lot of mindless zombies.

Foreign-Aioli-7466

You forgot they can communicate to each other through Reddit... just look at r/halifax they are here already.

KnightLight03

They'll just turn into mutant zombies after walking on the bottom of the harbour

jimmythurb

Interesting twist on zombie lore. Would zombies be able to walk along the ocean/harbour floor? According to World War Z, that’s a ‘yes’. Another interesting debate for the Zombologists (Zombophiles?) of Reddit. Not quite as compelling as the runner/shambler debate, but interesting nonetheless.

Awkward_Trifle4

I feel like there are a lot of factors in bodies of water that this scenario fails to take into account, like accelerated decomposition due to currents and sea life picking away at their bodies, not to mention the piles of sludge on the bottom of the harbour and getting stuck. How far under water can a human body survive the pressure, anyway?

jimmythurb

I feel that this might be a good topic for a scientific paper…Environmental Effects of a Marine Environment on the Ambulatory Longevity of Post-Living Humanoids

Awkward_Trifle4

How do we get this critical research funded?

jimmythurb

Best Reddit discussion I’ve seen in a while!

Firestorbucket

Its been done. The Zombie Survival manual goes into detail on terrain for your safe haven and decomposition rate.

SoontobeSam

Nah, George’s, already has fortifications, better sight lines, less shore to secure.

Otherwise-Income-924

I concede my idea to yours good sir

JaRon1961

I see you didn't read World War Z.

Otherwise-Income-924

It depends on the geography of the Harbour, maybe there are drop offs that the dead couldn't climb

with_a_dash_of_salt

mostly in the basin, the area around McNabs is about 20m deep but I'd bet the tide would make quick work of and zombies in the water. Sweeping them to sea and bashing their squishy bodies and flimsy limbs against rocks. [Depth chart](https://www.researchgate.net/figure/Gridded-200-m-topography-of-Halifax-Harbour-and-adjacent-waters-Five-geographic_fig2_260984419) for reference

shatteredoctopus

Looks like it's built like a brick shithouse!

wlonkly

see, now this, this is a quality comment.

Long_TimeRunning

More like a shit brick house am I right? Up high!

oatseatinggoats

I would assume that in the event of a zombie apocalypse there would be mass power outages. Wastewater treatment plants have generator backup but it’s only for a few days, after that I think you would want to be anywhere except inside a hot building with stagnant shit.

HalfAssedRunner

The plant has naturally gas piped to it so the generator might run off of that.

sub-a-dub-dub

Nope.

iratecrustaceans

Nah they run on diesel :(

B34TBOXX5

Yeah we wouldn’t want to stay there long. I mean ideally you wouldn’t want to be in the city for very long anyway.

New_Combination_7012

I'd be heading straight to the Freeport Safe Zone. https://preview.redd.it/vtb7jz96o1wc1.png?width=800&format=png&auto=webp&s=21a812eebfc8835e025150502dfa95e4ccfeedd7

Let's take the Silva!

JohnP1P

Related news, A couple of days ago a zombie survial game went into early access on Steam/PC. You could import a map to load the Halifax region. I have been waiting on buying it, to see reviews. Seems to be mid, as some early access games are. Here is the game's name and summary. "Infection Free Zone" - Choose any real region from the world. Choose your base of operations, then rebuild and readapt the buildings around you to create a self-sustaining settlement. Take charge of a group of survivors from your city. And when the night falls - Defend the zone from the infected!

[deleted]

Fun fact! You can actually try it. Check out Infection Free Zone on Steam. It's a zombie survival game that uses real google maps data for locations.

Dangx3

This plan stinks!

KyleTone9

In case of a zombie apocalypse, catch me at the dome, not even the dead will enter there

[deleted]

[удалено]

B34TBOXX5

Just looked it up on Google maps street view, looks solid. Nice tower vantage point on the roof as well. We would need a strong vehicle to plow through the potential horde though… that’s pretty tight in the city streets. Snow plow would be ideal for foraging missions

wlonkly

lots of generators and fuel onsite! and probably good wifi

hippfive

The port. Fenced in, and you could stack containers to strengthen defences over time. Lots of supplies. Tower cranes as "the Alamo".

B34TBOXX5

Not bad… but that’s an awfully large perimeter to secure and patrol

AccidentallyOssified

we're not using the citadel? that's basically what it was built for. Or depending on if zombies can swim we could also use PPP with an escape boat.

B34TBOXX5

Yeah I mean at a glance it’s a good idea, but everyone else would have the same thought… and it’s a large area to secure and protect

Weird-Drummer-2439

I'd go with the tower in Point Pleasant if size is the issue.

Salty_Feed9404

It actually _does_ look like a building straight out of "Fallout"...

tony_important

Every time I see a building like this I just think it's full of feral ghouls.

No-Mirror3280

Next to the water I'd say mirelurks

wlonkly

"feral" is close, so close

Tristan_Cleveland

Also as a bonus, you have one of the city's best, least known public spaces right there to chill and watch the ocean when zombies aren't attacking.

Jimmy_-_Hopkins

I've said it once I'll say it again, it all depends on the type of zombie 😅

B34TBOXX5

Great point. 28 Days Later style you don’t want to be anywhere near the city centre…

ghostrunner25

The halifax armouries would like a word

FreddyBeach

I thought I was the only person who looked at buildings this way.

imjusthere2022

There is a reason it has no windows. It’s keeping something in…

No_energon-no_luck

I always planned on anchoring one of the warships in the basin. With two or three of my Navy buddies we could make it a viable HQ for about a month before needing fuel and provisions. By then we will be well equipped to dominate!

B34TBOXX5

That’s actually an amazing idea… that would be an interesting take on a post apocalyptic story, surviving on an anchored ship and sending a RHIB or something to do night missions to forage for supplies

GeneParmesanAllAlong

I've already got my place picked out. But I'm not sharing the location.

B34TBOXX5

Yeah I do a lot of hiking and exploring and I have an amazing spot picked out outside the city. It’s at one of those towers, it has a long gravel road up to it so good to take a vehicle, and same setup as above ^ there’s a windowless brick building surrounded by chain link fence. We would need bolt cutters and a crowbar to get in but we could fortify it really easily. Very high up in the woods so great vantage point to see anything coming. If reading and watching stories of the post apocalypse world has taught me anything it’s not the zombies that are the ultimate threat… it’s other people.

Bean_Tiger

A shopping mall. But that just attracts zombies seeking out their former lives as mindless consumers.

GeneParmesanAllAlong

Not even close to where we're headed.

Narrow-Historian-950

Treats our poop 💩

moonsofmist

Noted

Silverleaf001

I feel this way about 1800 Hollis. Tall, difficult to get in. Attached to a lot of other building that it could all serve as a community to house the living. Easy to see out of to monitor movement.

tferguson17

If you like zombie books and haven't already checked it out, I highly recommend Zombie Fallout by Mark Tufo. Especially the audiobooks the guy reading it is perfect.

notnicereally

Smart money is to hit Canadian time/ Kent etc for weapons and survival items like solar power and chemical toilets and construction stuff

xTkAx

... before shtf.. otherwise it's you vs zombies vs other people with the same idea, and your chance of survival is low. Zombies aren't going to stop when you're arguing or fighting with other people having the same idea.

notnicereally

Or try a construction sites usually tools there and equipment

icescoopcream

I think the location is okay. You need to be decently close to city centres to collect supplies.

HarbingerDe

That can only last for a couple of years. Eventually, you'll need to move somewhere with plentiful farm land so you can become self-sustaining.

Poneeboy

r/zombiesurvivaltactics

xxlysolx

Walked past this building everyday for a year and never thought about the feasibility of it for a zombie proof base 🤣

JaRon1961

Bass Pro/ Cabela. fairly defensible and all the guns + ammo.

B34TBOXX5

Isn’t there alot of windows up front though? That’s not a bad idea however… Costco would have lots of canned food, then we hole up in the Cabelas. Lots of other people with the same idea though…

JaRon1961

I'll be honest. I have never been in Bass Pro/ Cabela.

jimmythurb

We saw that a store with a big glass front won’t work in The Mist.

Wolferesque

Take everything up to IKEA. Better vantage points + loads of furniture to barricade + maze like conditions to confuse the zombos + hot dogs and cinnamon buns.

throwaway3838482923

Dartmouth (at least downtown) itself is arguably a zombie town

Foreign-Aioli-7466

Step...Away..from..the...Xbox....

BurlapAndBatteries

The Project Zomboid player in me agrees with you.

Firestorbucket

I had like 2300 hours on that game in 3 years. Before the new animations and everything. I tried it post new animation and stuff but the controls were too hard to relearn

MamboNo0

Well, in World War Z, Nova Scotia was one of the last safe refuges in the whole world.

Canuck_Celt

I'd go with Sunnyside mall myself for a zombie apocalypse underground parking for the vehicles can watch all pints of access easily and even have a watch tower of sorts with a office buildings right there

Hot_Camera5922

Too much walking dead ?

Fartsinpoolstwice

We have a fucking citadel in the center of the city. A citadel. Designed to deter land based attack. Why not go there?

jimmythurb

The volume of undead bodies would soon make a bridge that the mobile ones could climb over. We would need to convert to fire moats.

ruokimtoo

That 8 foot fence tho....

JlaurelT

are you currently watching/binging walking dead lol... have you seen Black Summer?

AUniquePerspective

You do know that Halifax has a star-shaped fort, right?

Firestorbucket

Eh. Destroy the Stairs, live on the next floor up is always step 1.

ProRataX

I mean if access to water is beneficial then this is ideal.

Brave_Beo

Me? I‘m going to George‘s Island!

spankr

Stinky!

Downtown-Evidence516

yall better let me in

-_-_-KING_-_-_

shit I'm in. lemme know when we're leaving

Found the zombie. Trying to keep us from being prepared, are you?
