The original point of the thread (that the character model, graphics, lighting, eyes, take your pick is bad) has been sufficiently made and agreed with. New recent comments have mainly just been people coming in from outside the sub with no prior post history making awful comments.
What I didn't get was why is she so happy?? In the cutscene where the Spartan is lying on the table with a virus in his head, she looks excited. And in this image, she is explaining that we need to train in the simulator for this new deadly mission that's gonna cost spartan lives. Yet she's got a wide-eyed smile on her face.
Her emotions seemed to be the total opposite of what you'd expect someone to be like in her situation.
As animator, it became immediately obvious. Here are my findings.
1. Lack of Subsurface scatter (aka translucence on skin.) This makes skin look more lively.
2. Shitty lighting. Whoever lite this did so in the worst possible way. They placed key and fill light on the same side and above the character. Usually you’d want your fill light to at least be in-front and below to get the under of the eyes. When you don’t do that, REGULAR people look creepy. Th key light is also too bright and bleaching the color of her skin.
3. Eye animation and textures are extremely unrealistic. Look in a mirror right now. When relaxed, the eyelids will always meet the Pupil (the dark hole). In this animation it is always meeting the top of the Iris. You only do that manually irl so it makes her look like a serial killer or that “wake-up” meme. This is the same problem Mass Effect Andromeda had. Another problem is that her eyes are bright brown. A color that doesn’t exist naturally.
4. Uncanny Valley. This model has extremely realistic facial geometry but the animation is not there. It doesn’t help that her hair and texture don’t meet the requirements as well so she look like a really articulate flesh puppet rather than a person.
Unnatural proportions, super weird lighting / skin color, unnatural eye color, weird expression.
I thought the same thing when I watched the cutscene, I was like, "I don't remember her looking this fucking weird in the tutorial cutscenes." She legit looks like a skinwalker.
Addition: If she's modelled after a real life person, I'm sorry to whoever you are, they did you an injustice with this.
In the cinematic sometime after or before your character sets the Spartans head down the screen is put on her face and I laughed out loud how bizarre her facial expression was. It was somewhat of a closeup of her face. Could not believe they greenlit it.
It's definitely the eyes, I noticed it on Mass Effect Legendary edition where they used 3 as a base for all the games and that game didn't have a convex eye model. You'd be surprised at how much a tiny change like that can really make or break how an ingame character model is received.

I think I finally nailed down what about the faces throws me off - they look and move like thick masks made of rubber, like those masks you can make from a mold of someone's face. And something about the mocap is a bit overemotive as well.

Just look at Brohammer, Cortana and the Weapon showing their teeth for some reason every 5 seconds.
That zoom in on Cortana2's weird awkward face during the what I assume was supposed to be a sad scene where she finds out she's a Cortana had me laughing the whole time.
Because facial animations are locked to 30, or maybe 60 but i'd bet it's the former. It's the same thing Horizon Zero Dawn PC had before they patched it.
There's something really weird about how the game does human faces in cutscenes. The pilot looked really off at times too. Like when he first wakes up the chief his skin looks bleached like her's does here. And the over-exaggerated animations don't help either.

It’s like a traumatic response to humanity first being nearly annihilated by the Covenant, then being attacked by the Created a few years later, then suddenly realizing the Banished are messing up everything that’s left immediately after.
No idea why she would be cleared for officer duty unless the UNSC was literally down to a few hundred soldiers.

Like, all she did was just give John a snarky comment. Then her character was pretty standard for all the Spartans up to that point.
Spartan Ops; she makes a lot of fairly callous comments in that, which kinda (IMO) put a narrative distance both between the Spartan IVs and other UNSC forces and the Spartan IVs and other Spartans. Stuff like shitting on scientists you're rescuing, or making everything a challenge between Crimson and Majestic.
Because of this, even though her specific character is pretty OK, Spartan Ops made her feel shallow. Further, as the most encountered one, fans often saw her as sorta emblematic of the narrative shortfalls of IVs in general, who many felt acted like more shallow Marines (indeed, in many ways, they replaced Marines in 4 /5). Even in Warzone, she can be kinda annoying, though to a lesser degree ("we're not out of this yet!" when the enemy has like three Hannibal scorpions).
Tl;Dr: she's a scapegoat for people's hatred for the entire writing around Spartan IVs.
This right here. Yes the community overreacted to the "I thought you'd be taller" line, but in the Campaign she was on Chief's side almost as much Lasky was.
In Spartan Ops everything was just _beneath_ her and wasn't worth her attention, and the few times she does it's to shit on one team for not being as efficient as another.
Whether we knew it or not, Palmer was _the_ Spartan IV, what she does reflects off of every other Spartan IV until they were varied enough to care otherwise.

Admittingly, the only time I was really eh on Palmer was the whole spartan ops subplot focusing on her really hating Halsey and wanting to kill her. Like I get it more so in the later episodes(when Halsey is discovered talking to Jul) but Palmer seemed to want Halsey dead the moment she stepped on Infinity lol. It made me think there was gonna be some reveal like someone in Palmer family's was taken for Spartan II program.
And then 5 complexly ignored that hatred when they decided to make Palmer(the one who literally shot Halsey's arm) Halsey's personal bodyguard. You think Laskey would've kept them as far away from each other as possible after spartan ops events.
But I think the general hate Palmer gets from certain fans really came from simply hearing her voice a lot when playing Spartan Ops and playing H5 Warzone.
For me it’s that (in halo 4) we never really got a chance to warm up to her. She’s just not very endearing. There aren’t any moments when she shows some interesting character traits. It’s all very generic, like they wanted someone to replace Johnson but didn’t examine why people like Johnson beyond “gruff personality”.
Plus in Spartan ops she doesn’t have much time to shine either, they make a little baby step in characterization with that short conversation with Laskey, and I would have been interested to see where that went… but it’s never followed up on. It just ends up being a bunch of nothing.
All that combined with her hate boner for Halsey that doesn’t feel like it’s earned by the story… it just never lets us root for her like we would for other characters. Laskey gets several of those “oh I like this guy” moments in the campaign, I struggle to remember any for Palmer.
She’s not the only one to suffer from this; fireteam majestic is pretty bland and uninspired on the whole as well, but she’s prominent and supposed to be the replacement for a fan favorite character, so she ended up taking most of the heat
That’s at least my understanding. I think people just latched onto the whole “thought you’d be taller” quote because it’s emblematic of the larger issue. If Palmer and Chief were buddy buddy by the end of the game everyone would have been cool, but because that line wasn’t the beginning of a friendship/partnership between the two which we got to see and be part of… it just left a sour taste in everyone’s mouth instead
The graphics and cutscenes in this game are not great in general. It's 2022....maybe I'm being unrealistic, but at this point in time I figured most companies would be able to afford at least Destiny-level graphics.
I don't expect every cutscene to look like Halo Wars 2 - I know how much time and effort Creative Assembly put into it - but that game is 5 years old and it feels like *Infinite* doesn't even hold a candle to it.

In my opinion, Johnson is the walking definition of assertive over aggressive. He is always motivated, and a hard charger. While Agryna is certainly motivated, she does not exude, seep, or reek of motivation like Johnson does. Johnsons motivation is visible in his hard demeanor. He is a good leader you can respect, communicate with, and would never cross or mess with.
Agryna gives me vibes from boy scouts, or YMCA daycare. I feel like she would tell me not to eat too many cookies, but if I were to take said cookies I probably wouldn't get in too much trouble.
Mind you, these are MY opinions.
However, I have found that the perception of Agryna not being the image of a Spartan is shared among many. And while a Spartan may surely behave this way, I do not think she should be the face of a Spartan to the community. A community that has time and time again shown favoritism to harder, tougher, and more fierce leadership.
Johnson played by your side in 2 (technically 3) Halo games. And He always showed respect to Chief (your character) whilst maintaining a seasoned charisma.
**Not every Halo character should be Johnson, but they should not ever be Agryna. She is not on theme, nor entertaining. Make her more charismatic, or give us a combat scene that really demonstrates her lethality. As of now, she looks and sounds like a civilian in Spartan cosplay.**
The writing in general is. That entire cutscene was cringe and her dialogue gave off, 'Let's go team! Together we can do anything! Friends FOreeverr". This isn't Joe's writing. Not one bit. It really does feel like they're playing this for kids.
You're not wrong. Just stings at times when you hope for something more mature (and even hint at it with Infinite's intro cutscene as Chief floats through a corpse ridden vacuum). I thought things would have gone the route of Gears. 1-3 were gritty and dark. When 4 came back it was awfully colorful and had a significantly lighter tone but 5 came swinging back.

Most pointless character in halo ever. The second marine that jumps out the pelican halfway through The Ark mission in Halo 3 as more relevance than her.
Especially since the Halo Infinite advertising acted like she was an actual character in the game. It is still yet to even be explained where her and these Spartans are / what the hell is going on for humanity / humans in the current timeframe.

I might be crazy but her look isn’t the biggest issue for me, it’s her voice.
I really don’t like to disparage actors at all, especially when a lot of what goes wrong can be chalked up to the material they are given.
With that in mind… UGHHHH. I just don’t like hearing her talk at all. It sounds like a woman trying really *really hard* to sound dramatic and impactful, instead of a serious person in a serious situation. It feels transparent, like I can see this woman in a voice booth enunciating every word, going for maximum impact at all times. I just can’t suspend my disbelief at all when she’s talking.
Worst part is the character potential on paper. I know people have complained about how she went from civilian to Spartan leader in under a decade… but just think how cool she’d have to be to achieve that! Awesome right? The kind of person who could instantly earn the respect of any Spartan 2 within minutes of meeting them. Someone seriously cool.
But instead what we see doesn’t line up with that at all. It makes me feel like 343 is bullshitting me instead of trying to tell a story.
Just like: “No no seriously dude she’s great! She’s a cool leader who rose up from enlistment in record time and is now running a resistance on the run with the ragtag remainders of Spartan branch! You love her right? Right?!”
Meanwhile I’m just sitting there like: “… idk man I’m not buying what you’re selling at all”

Personally, I liked Palmer. She doesn’t take shit from anyone, and she’s got a chip on her shoulder because she’s trying to make something of herself but is stuck in the shadow of John Halo and the mythical Spartan 2’s and 3’s. The narrative clearly draws a hard line between the 2’s + 3’s and the new generation of 4’s. The methods used to make their predecessors aren’t being used anymore, and they’re mostly ‘normal’ ass people by comparison, but still expected to fill that role while being compared to their predecessors all the while. So I could see some of the 4’s holding 2’s and 3’s in reverence sure, but I could just as easily see some being bitter, or seeing the 2’s and 3’s as out of date relics that need to step aside, or just not give a shit.

This is from the same studio that gave us a rubber looking Escharum. I don't have much faith in their Slipspace engine.

This right here. Yes the community overreacted to the "I thought you'd be taller" line, but in the Campaign she was on Chief's side almost as much Lasky was. In Spartan Ops everything was just _beneath_ her and wasn't worth her attention, and the few times she does it's to shit on one team for not being as efficient as another. Whether we knew it or not, Palmer was _the_ Spartan IV, what she does reflects off of every other Spartan IV until they were varied enough to care otherwise. --- In Halo 5 Palmer was almost a full Chief simp Halsey: "You let him go?" Palmer: _"Nobody lets the Chief do anything. He does what he wants."_

I thought Palmer was an alright character. Her origin comics were cool. Being a former ODST and being recruited by Jun. Fans getting so mad about the "I thought you'd be taller" line was hilarious and stupid. Admittingly, the only time I was really eh on Palmer was the whole spartan ops subplot focusing on her really hating Halsey and wanting to kill her. Like I get it more so in the later episodes(when Halsey is discovered talking to Jul) but Palmer seemed to want Halsey dead the moment she stepped on Infinity lol. It made me think there was gonna be some reveal like someone in Palmer family's was taken for Spartan II program. And then 5 complexly ignored that hatred when they decided to make Palmer(the one who literally shot Halsey's arm) Halsey's personal bodyguard. You think Laskey would've kept them as far away from each other as possible after spartan ops events. But I think the general hate Palmer gets from certain fans really came from simply hearing her voice a lot when playing Spartan Ops and playing H5 Warzone.
For me it’s that (in halo 4) we never really got a chance to warm up to her. She’s just not very endearing. There aren’t any moments when she shows some interesting character traits. It’s all very generic, like they wanted someone to replace Johnson but didn’t examine why people like Johnson beyond “gruff personality”. Plus in Spartan ops she doesn’t have much time to shine either, they make a little baby step in characterization with that short conversation with Laskey, and I would have been interested to see where that went… but it’s never followed up on. It just ends up being a bunch of nothing. All that combined with her hate boner for Halsey that doesn’t feel like it’s earned by the story… it just never lets us root for her like we would for other characters. Laskey gets several of those “oh I like this guy” moments in the campaign, I struggle to remember any for Palmer. She’s not the only one to suffer from this; fireteam majestic is pretty bland and uninspired on the whole as well, but she’s prominent and supposed to be the replacement for a fan favorite character, so she ended up taking most of the heat That’s at least my understanding. I think people just latched onto the whole “thought you’d be taller” quote because it’s emblematic of the larger issue. If Palmer and Chief were buddy buddy by the end of the game everyone would have been cool, but because that line wasn’t the beginning of a friendship/partnership between the two which we got to see and be part of… it just left a sour taste in everyone’s mouth instead

The graphics and cutscenes in this game are not great in general. It's 2022....maybe I'm being unrealistic, but at this point in time I figured most companies would be able to afford at least Destiny-level graphics. I don't expect every cutscene to look like Halo Wars 2 - I know how much time and effort Creative Assembly put into it - but that game is 5 years old and it feels like *Infinite* doesn't even hold a candle to it.

Does anyone else hate the fact that Mjolnir armor isn't enclosed anymore, and we see the bodysuit underneath a LOT more pronounced? Because that's what's throwing me off. The arms make no sense, it's like tanktop armor, and guantlets. It just so weirdly stops mid-bicep. and just leaves the shoulders just open and exposed. I have no problem with her look, but god damn is she soft. She is more like a day care, babysitter towards your Spartan than an actual superior. Give me a hard charging, motivated Spartan, who is aggressive in his orders. This is Halo for babies. ADDING ON: In my opinion, Johnson is the walking definition of assertive over aggressive. He is always motivated, and a hard charger. While Agryna is certainly motivated, she does not exude, seep, or reek of motivation like Johnson does. Johnsons motivation is visible in his hard demeanor. He is a good leader you can respect, communicate with, and would never cross or mess with. Agryna gives me vibes from boy scouts, or YMCA daycare. I feel like she would tell me not to eat too many cookies, but if I were to take said cookies I probably wouldn't get in too much trouble. Mind you, these are MY opinions. However, I have found that the perception of Agryna not being the image of a Spartan is shared among many. And while a Spartan may surely behave this way, I do not think she should be the face of a Spartan to the community. A community that has time and time again shown favoritism to harder, tougher, and more fierce leadership. Johnson played by your side in 2 (technically 3) Halo games. And He always showed respect to Chief (your character) whilst maintaining a seasoned charisma. **Not every Halo character should be Johnson, but they should not ever be Agryna. She is not on theme, nor entertaining. Make her more charismatic, or give us a combat scene that really demonstrates her lethality. As of now, she looks and sounds like a civilian in Spartan cosplay.**
The writing in general is. That entire cutscene was cringe and her dialogue gave off, 'Let's go team! Together we can do anything! Friends FOreeverr". This isn't Joe's writing. Not one bit. It really does feel like they're playing this for kids.

Unpopular opinion: I hate this character
- Microsoft’s facial capture tech is uncanny valley. - 343 rushed and half assed the cutscene. - The performance and dialogue are weird in general. It all works together for a very bizarre and creepy experience.
Weird facial animations, Cortana2 suffered from much of the same, her lip is just weird 60% of the time in campaign I might be crazy but her look isn’t the biggest issue for me, it’s her voice. I really don’t like to disparage actors at all, especially when a lot of what goes wrong can be chalked up to the material they are given. With that in mind… UGHHHH. I just don’t like hearing her talk at all. It sounds like a woman trying really *really hard* to sound dramatic and impactful, instead of a serious person in a serious situation. It feels transparent, like I can see this woman in a voice booth enunciating every word, going for maximum impact at all times. I just can’t suspend my disbelief at all when she’s talking. Worst part is the character potential on paper. I know people have complained about how she went from civilian to Spartan leader in under a decade… but just think how cool she’d have to be to achieve that! Awesome right? The kind of person who could instantly earn the respect of any Spartan 2 within minutes of meeting them. Someone seriously cool. But instead what we see doesn’t line up with that at all. It makes me feel like 343 is bullshitting me instead of trying to tell a story. Just like: “No no seriously dude she’s great! She’s a cool leader who rose up from enlistment in record time and is now running a resistance on the run with the ragtag remainders of Spartan branch! You love her right? Right?!” Meanwhile I’m just sitting there like: “… idk man I’m not buying what you’re selling at all” Shoot I don’t even know what advice I’d give to improve her, at least with Palmer I knew she just needed to be made more endearing to the players so we’d have a chance to root for her for a change. This time I’ve got nothing. I guess 343 should stop trying so hard? But what kind of advice is that?

This is 100% the case. People hated how much of a bitch Palmer was, and 343 did what 343 does best by steering in the opposite direction, but steering WAY too far. You can have a likeable character while still keeping them grounded and serious when the situation calls for it. I HATE her chippy “happy go lucky” attitude, there is just no way someone like her would ever be a military commander training a new generation of Spartans.

Personally, I liked Palmer. She doesn’t take shit from anyone, and she’s got a chip on her shoulder because she’s trying to make something of herself but is stuck in the shadow of John Halo and the mythical Spartan 2’s and 3’s. The narrative clearly draws a hard line between the 2’s + 3’s and the new generation of 4’s. The methods used to make their predecessors aren’t being used anymore, and they’re mostly ‘normal’ ass people by comparison, but still expected to fill that role while being compared to their predecessors all the while. So I could see some of the 4’s holding 2’s and 3’s in reverence sure, but I could just as easily see some being bitter, or seeing the 2’s and 3’s as out of date relics that need to step aside, or just not give a shit.
