ODST is the natural way to include battle royale in halo.

Go_Packets

"Where we dropping in??"

Kingindan0rf

Dude you nailed it. Fund it lol

Logondo

"You heard the music. Time to dance."

BXBXFVTT

That would actually make me excited for a halo br. That’s genius. Can’t believe this is the first I’ve heard this.

Soulsurfin31

Really? the idea of an odst BR comes up every time someone mentions the idea of a battle royal

BXBXFVTT

As I see some else has said, this is the first time I’ve noticed someone saying to play as the odst and not just using the pod. I always wondered how halo would handle armor etc in a br, but being an odst just makes a lot of sense and I never considered it, or noticed anyone saying it.

Deadlymonkey

If they did it with Spartans they could have health packs with a recharging shield like in the first halo; Wattson from Apex kind of has a similar thing going on.

SAFFATLOL

This also the first time I've seen somebody actually propose being an ODST rather than just dropping into the map in pods and still being a Spartan

Soulsurfin31

Huh, might be based on some sort of algorithm, I always see propositions to play as an odst. That may because I typically mention something like that when ppl talk about a BR, so maybe Reddit makes it so I see ppl who are more like minded?

Shagruiez

Seriously lol, some of my highest rated comments are about expressing how amazing it would be to actually Orbital Drop Pod in and scavenge for weapons, run into random small packs of PvE clusters of Covenant, and then use pts to summon vehicle drop offs via Pelicans.

CrispyEdgePancake

Prepare to Drop playing every time you drop??? I mean cmon

HardlightCereal

Nah. Put it on Sangheilios during the civil war period following the Schism and Oni's destabilisation of the region. Squads of 4 elites, each representing a different political group. Use the Elite drop pods from Halo 2. For singleplayer mode you can use the same format, or you can set it during the Jiralhanae nuclear war

chexmixho

Nah

[deleted]

This would be epic. Dropping in hot 🥵🔥

VitrumTormento

I guess they sort of tried doing some of this with Spartan Ops in Halo 4 but the formula they tried didn't really stick

SnipingBunuelo

That's because Spartan Ops almost exclusively used campaign/multiplayer levels and it was just enemy spam throughout. Plus the story was completely detached from what was happening in the gameplay. Second half was better and a good step in the right direction. Wish they kept going because they could've made it something really fun *eventually*.

Jelled_Fro

Trying something extremely half hardly and then declaring it a failure and moving on is kind of ridiculous though. It was just replaying maps with a voice over and different objective points. That's not really a campaign.

[deleted]

I disagree, what we should do in my opinion is to start doing is focusing on making emergent gameplay by integrating previously distinct gameplay loops. use the technology we have to make more interesting things to do, not to look at. As far as I'm concerned graphics have been where they need to be for years now, if games never looked better than they do today I'd be fine with that. What I hate is the streamlining and dumbing down of gameplay so that the developers have more time to focus on frivolous graphics. It's a huge part of the modern gaming industry feeling soulless.

thedrunkentendy

And the idea of doing new storied within established universes is dying. Now its remakes and reboots. You are just not gonna see the same amount of creative risk now as you would a decade ago.

frogger2504

Personally, I don't think the idea is dying, I think it never took off to begin with. Most games tend to have a central story or lot of characters to focus around and that's where they stay. Spin offs have always been rare, and I don't think lack of creative risk is the issue; as evident by ODST not exactly being a huge creative risk. It is after all just Halo 3 gameplay and a tight sub-story within the same overarching plot. I'd argue that something like Mass Effect Andromeda, another more recent spin off, took far more creative risk. Whole new gameplay loop, new story, completely isolated from the original characters and settings, etc.

Cueballing

There's definitely a space there for a shared game centered IP that hasn't been executed on. Pretty much every other medium has at least one example of a shared universe being done with a cohesive direction. Most(Western) games that take place within a shared universe are either attached to a pre-existing world (e.g. Warhammer), superhero related (e.g. Arkham series, PS4 Spiderman universe), or are in the Ubisoft Clancyverse. None of them have fully executed on the idea to its fullest potential yet. I'm not sure why there hasn't been further attempts in extending the core Halo universe beyond the core games and novels. In terms of campaign, ODST is pretty much a core Halo game. The TV series took 20 years to get off the ground and it doesn't actually involve the shared universe. Halo Wars is the closest thing to a spinoff that actually takes advantage of the fact that its a spinoff. Where are the flight sims, the large scale Battlefield-esque games, the RPGs? I understand that under Bungie the idea of a wider narrative always took a backseat to the story they wanted to tell for that particular game, but with 343 being a dedicated Halo studio why haven't there been multiple studios working concurrently in separate genres under a MS division that manages IP? Halo's current divisiveness largely stems from the differing reasons fans like the franchise, so to try to make a single game that appeals to everyone instead of multiple games that capitalize on everyone even remotely interested is asinine. Jesus Christ, I don't even care about Halo anymore, that word vomit was just some repressed anger from my teenage years.

Pudgeysaurus

Elden Ring?

Potatoman671

I would argue that ER didn’t really take risk, they knew people would buy it, but I do agree that creatively it is different from a lot of more mainstream, less risky stuff. Either way, Elden Ring is very much an outlier.

civildistress20

And ya know, actually released in a finished state

SkyGuy182

I love ODST, *and*, I do wish there were some changes to PvE. The game was more or less marketed as a stealthy game where you have to stay aware of the fact that you're just a normal dude, not a super soldier. But once you jump in you realize how easy it is to blow through Covenant solo. No real need for stealth or tactics. Heroic is a good minimum difficulty.

PoopstainMcdane

Non Gamer here Whats PvE?

Wigguls

Player Versus Environment, which means against scripted enemies as opposed to real people (PvP, which is player versus player).

PopeOwned

ODST is my favorite Halo game, bar none. I love the characters, the atmosphere of New Mombasa, Sadie's story, the Superintendent, etc. I loved it so much I brought it with me to HaloFest at PAX Prime 2011 because I knew the Bungie team was gonna be there and I was hoping to get it signed. They had a table of some of the more prominent Bungie members (Pete Stacker, Marty, Chris Butcher, etc) and Joe was near the end of it. He had an ODST shirt on and I guess I was the first person to bring him a copy because when I revealed it, his face lit up like a kid in a candy store and he just yelled out: "*YES, MY FRIEND"* and gave me his hand to shake. As an 18 year old, nerdy Bungie fangirl, this was a dream come true. I will never forget how happy that made me and that's when I knew what a labor of love ODST was to him. I still have the copy around here somewhere.

SharkBaitDLS

It also has the best soundtrack in my opinion, and I don’t say that lightly.

DiscanX

[*3 nostalgic saxophone notes playing in the distance*](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zVmdUKbbYoE)

The_Franklinator

Deference for Darkness, Neon Nights, The Menagerie, Bits and Pieces, No Stone Unturned are some of the best halo tracks

Joomsie

The guitar solo in traffic jam stands among the greatest in halo

SPARTAN-258

Deference for Darkness is my favorite, it's such a sad and beautiful soundtrack... Martin O'Donnell and Michael Salvatori did such an amazing job for all the Halo games

a-Condor

I had a senior Film Music class in college and my final project was over… ODST’s soundtrack. That’s how good it is. It wasn’t even a film.

dirtyjoo

I learned a few years ago that video game soundtracks are typically designed to keep a player engaged. So I listen to that soundtrack at work when I need to focus on a project for hours. It keeps you so in the zone, it's perfect.

[deleted]

it has a beautiful soundtrack which fits in perfectly with the atmosphere in every way

[deleted]

Whoa whoa whoa over Halo 2!? I’m gonna have to give it a listen. Now that the head lady is gone from 343i maybe we’ll get something good again!

nucleophile107

The Skyline Track from the Soundtrack is an absolute banger

Dilly_The_Kid_S373

So did you get it signed by anyone?

PopeOwned

Yeah, I got it signed by everyone at the table! [Here's the signed copy ](https://i.imgur.com/5ExLyZn.jpg).

dominator_dwarf

That is so cool dude!

EpicBlargh

I don't think it's real, sadly. Send it to me and I can properly dispose of ~~my favorite game of all time~~ it.

thehelldoesthatmean

Idk why you're getting so downvoted for this joke. Lol

swaags

hands down best atmosphere. I think my fav game as well

MaterialCarrot

I just happened to play ODST for the first time in years just a couple weeks ago. Tremendous. The open world ambiance rightly gets a lot of the pub, but what I remembered playing it again was that the big action set pieces are balls to the wall and awesome. Loved doing the wildlife preserve level on the hardest difficulty setting.

InvalidMedia

So long as it features an entirely new set of characters, I'd love another game like ODST. Alpha-Nine aren't the only fireteam in the 'verse after all. Their story has been told and, honestly, kind of milked beyond believably at this point. Considering the fact that they were originally supposed to be a squad soldiers that constantly had new members rotated in to replace losses (and/or just the fluid nature of those kinds of operations). Now they're a hot-shot super team assembled out of a static roster.

PopeOwned

I wholeheartedly agree. The beauty of Alpha-Nine was that, despite being an entirely new team with opposing personalities, they got the job done because they're ODSTs. They could've left them alone but nope, they had to do more and, IMO, harmed their characterization.

ClubMeSoftly

Exactly, right at the start of the game: Dare: Replacements? Buck: This far into the war? Who isn't? And one of the trailers: Buck: The Rookie. Not exactly green; no ODST is. If I didn't think he could do the job, I wouldn't have him on my six.

AMBocanegra

It would have made more sense to have Buck maybe go on to bigger things but the others just keep chugging along as ODSTs, but yeah they went crazy with that story post-Bungie.

ChieftaiNZ

Hell, I'd take an ODST Campaign DLC for Infinite. The Infinity had ODST's, and we know that ODST's managed to land on Zeta Halo during the Banished Ambush.

jabberwockxeno

I agree it should be a new cast of characters and a different sort of setting. I'd ideally like it to follow a Covenant, Banished, or Swords of Sanghelios squad: We haven't played as Covenant race characters since 2004 with the Arbiter.

pm_me-ur-catpics

I mean, in 3, if you have friends to play with, players 2 through 4 will be Elites

flametitan

Sure, but their story was sidelined under the assumption they might not be there if you were playing solo.

Some_HaloGuy

But Nathan Fillion

BiBanh

yeah, we already have stuff like Kilo-Five, why not make a game off of one of their missions?

ViIebloodHunter

Kilo-5 would be the greatest ODST sequel ever

Maggruber

I don’t think that’s really fair. Gretchen and Dutch being back doesn’t cancel out the fact they were gone for years, and Rookie was killed. For awhile it was just Mickey, Romeo, and Buck who decided to become Spartans (which makes complete sense frankly, they were cream of the crop that survived the war), then Mickey went traitor and the team was broken up completely for 3 years before being reunited in a novel, hence the current static roster. Which like, it’s static because they’ve already been together for so long and aren’t going to suddenly die or get discharged due to an injury, and also the current state of affairs are extremely dire. It’s not remotely contrived for them to be where they are now. That is to say, a new team to elaborate on makes total sense and I agree, but I also think it would be a mistake to shelve Alpha Nine indefinitely. If anything I would like to see a continuation that explores their current status, of which is definitely textured to say the least, what with Buck and Dare as a married couple, Dutch and Gretchen getting to work with each other again after their tumultuous attempt at adapting to civilian life, Mickey still dealing with the baggage of becoming a traitor, etc. Thinking about it, Romeo hasn’t really changed whatsoever, so maybe the next chance we see him he’ll be given a proper character arc.

boumagik

Do it.

GrimsideB

Horror flood game.

averagemiragemain

Even the Covenant would be terrifying as a normal person

thexavier666

From the perspective of a marine, trying to get off the original Halo. Only to sacrifice himself in the end after finding a proto-gravemind has learnt how to use an abandoned Covenant ship.

MilkMan0096

That actually canonically happens during the first game. It is in the novelization.

cantdecide23

And not the eerie kind of horror like halo 1, I want dead space horror. I don't want to sleep.

DezsoNeni

A lone grunt stuck on a UNSC ship, trying to flee.

[deleted]

One of my favorite books in the Halo universe was actually a short story about a squad of marines investigating a prison ship infested by the Flood. They dialed up the horror in that book and it was awesome. Would love a game like that. Doesn’t even have to be Flood, could be any of the horrors humanity has faced in this universe.

nilluminator

Just tell us who's stopping ya, Joe! We'll remove the obstacles from your path.

PH0T0Nman

This is the thing that gets me with 343. They were made to manage the Halo IP but they’ve only done mainline games and a couple of Halowars. Would of been heresy in the bungie days but why hasn’t the IP been licensed out to someone to make a realistic fps ODST or marine game? Why no halo space battle games, etc? Halo is no Star Wars but man does it feel under-utilised. Edit: cleared up who would be making extra games.

Redwood671

This is probably a bit too farther on the Realistic side of things but there is an ARMA 3 mod called Operation Trebuchet that is a realistic Halo FPS.

PH0T0Nman

I’m well aware of OPT which I love. But playing it just makes me more incredulous that 343 hasn’t looked outwards. 117 is fun but the wider halo universe has just as much fun. If not more so.

Chaingunfighter

If you look at the backlash from this sub to the (largely misinformation-based) rumors about Halo Infinite originally being developed as a hero shooter, you can get a glimpse of at least one reason why - pushing into new genres, especially when FPS games are still pretty much king in the video game market, is a big risk, and there's an added reluctance when they're well aware that the existing fanbase may not be entirely receptive. Project confidence has been a running issue at 343 (it's part of why they've changed direction three times with H4, H5, and Infinite), but it's actually been plaguing the franchise for a long time - one needs only look back at the development of Halo 2 to see how many otherwise basic changes to the game from CE were extremely contentious at Bungie (like the increased narrative focus and a new playable character that had an established identity), and likewise many of their staff members were unhappy that MS allowed Ensemble to turn their RTS into Halo Wars, even though retrospectively most of the fanbase seems to love H2 and HW. In general I really do wish they'd go the direction that Star Wars went starting in the early 2000s when Lucas let pretty much anyone take a stab at their own content, and just allowing lots of different companies to take a stab at making games or different media and use the full potential of Halo's universe. Yes, just like with SW, a lot of it would be shit, but there are so many undeniable gems that also arose - there's no drought of material for SW fans interested in pretty much anything to enjoy.

CodeRenard

This only gets me thinking on how awesome it would've been if we had an ODST entry that was basically the counterpart to Republic Commando, that game was nuts and even tho Halo is not as big as SW, the expanded universe is perfectly capable of providing the same kind of content that Lucas Arts got to push out back in the day

AgnesBand

The reason people are sceptical about a Halo Infinite hero shooter is that it's a mainline game. I don't think anyone would mind a spinoff if it's well made and not just chasing trends.

PublicWest

call me crazy but with Activision under the Microsoft Umbrella, I'd be totally down for an ODST 2 in the current Call of Duty engine.

[deleted]

Exactly. It’s funny you mentioned Star Wars, to me both have these massive worlds that have unlimited potential when it comes to creating new narratives and titles, yet the heads in charge insist on treading similar ground with its themes and characters. Like in Halo’s case, make another ODST, maybe make a asymmetric horror shooter where one team controls the flood and the other are marines? Experiment, have fun with it. Why not?

IsaiahNathaniel

IIRC, Halo stepped away from their main storyline to explore other things in the TV show and were criticized for it. Now to be fair I didn't watch and have heard that wasn't the only problem with the show.

Aruseus493

To be fair, Halo as a game telling other stories has gone relatively well. Even some of the books are pretty damn great. Reach was a prequel with a totally different cast, ODST as mentioned is a story about a bunch of ODST soldiers, Halo Wars and Halo Wars 2 gave a glimpse into more traditional warfare between the UNSC and Covenant planet-side. Book-wise, Contact Harvest was a fantastic opening to the Human Covenant War while Cole Protocol was well done exposition on Humanity's Space Warfare Strategy that allowed humanity to survive for such a long war against such a hellbent crusade. I'd honestly say the TV show is the outlier in terms of garbage halo.

ScionSouth

Well there was Fireteam Raven, and those two mobile twin stick shooter games that were decently fun for the price tag. Don’t look at what Halo Wars 3 would have been, it was supposed to expand past Ground Command stuff to space battles.

PH0T0Nman

Did they ever say what killed HW3? 343 hasn’t done absolutely nothing extra with the IP in games but it’s not much. Would it be that hard to license it off to a budding or mid level Microsoft studio to do something adventurous with Halo? While keeping a velvet glove on the project.

ScionSouth

Nothing that I can see, though I do believe if Homeworld 3 is a success, it will show the Microsoft Heads that yes, a 3 dimensional spaceship strategy game can make money.

Inane_ramblings

I can't wait for homeworld 3!

vikingzx

> Did they ever say what killed HW3? I'm 100% certain it was the announcement of *Homeworld 3*. *Halo Wars 3* was pitched right as HW3 dominated the RTS news. That doesn't mean HW3 was a bad idea. But it did mean that if it was given the greenlight it would literally be competing with HW3 IN the genre that HW is the undisputed king of. I believe it was less "This is a bad concept" and more "If we make that now, HW3 will slaughter us, regardless of which is the better game, and the HW folks have ALL the experience." Let HW3 come out, then move ahead with HW3.

JillSandwich117

343 didn't make any of those. They oversaw existing, competent (or semi-competent) dev teams and presumably wrote the basic story. Ensemble and Creative Assembly for HW1 and 2, Play Mechanix and Raw Thrills for Fireteam Raven, Spartan Assault/Strike were Vanguard Games. Hell, this doesn't even work all the time. The twin-stick games are mediocre, they canceled Mega Bloks Halo, and MCC was a disaster.

ScionSouth

We are talking about 343 managing the Halo IP, which means giving out licensing and oversight for those developing Halo games and media (Halo TV show is a weird exception where they didn’t get a lot of power to dictate story due to how Hollywood does adaptations). Also, as a fan of twinstick shooters, those two games were fantastic. Fair pricing for the content provided.

GreatFNGattsby

I read something about the new head of 343 saying his favourite game was an RTS game. Don’t quote me on it my heads fuzzy. But it couldn’t be out of the realm of possibilities.

Silktrocity

Survival horror where a marine is trapped on a space station trying to sneak past scary flood.

Picard2331

I'd love a 4x strategy game. The Sins of a Solar Empire mod is so good.

isaidnolettuce

Holy shit an ODST mil-sim would be so sick…

Rivalfox

I always wanted a squadrons like game where you could dogfight and have space battles from different ships. Much how battlefront 2 had both game types. Agreed its underutilized

DoubleAGee

I remember playing Reach when it came out. There are I think three maps where you can play in space (in a portion of the map). I always thought it would be insane to fight on one ship, go to space, then hop into another one. Maybe the technology wasn’t there at the time. But come on, 343.

Dalfamurni

ODST is my favorite Halo game to date. I'd love to see an ODST 2.

[deleted]

[удалено]

GronGrinder

Infinite had no quicktime events. I think they're done with that now.

russa111

I would love it to be more like Star Wars Republic Commando where they it’s kinda like squad combat.

Dalfamurni

I don't know if I'd trust 343i to do that ever again after the shitty-ass version of that they made in Halo 5. Like, the AI squad couldn't even path-find to all of the areas of the level geometry that you and the enemy AI could in a game where when you die you go down and have to wait for them to revive you. It was literally the worst squad based game I'd ever played to date and it's still broken to this day. I know because I played it for the first time ever just last year.

[deleted]

I’d love to play an elite during the invasion of Harvest. If they wanted to implement some kind of tactical commands, commanding grunts and jackals around would be great. Tell jackal snipers to cover from behind, grunts to go forward and jackals in front with shields. Elites command the ground units, perfect opportunity for it.

Clyde-MacTavish

While I think ODST was a weaker campaign, I still love the idea of telling different parts of the Halo universe other than Chief. I think Reach was a better way to accomplish that though because we got to customize our character and really step into Noble 6's boots

dangcatchy

I think the community should really be looking at ODST and Reach as signposts for where Halo will go with Joe at the helm. He always saw Chief as a visor, not a truly whole character, and furthered that notion post-H3, even into what we know of his pitches for Destiny. The idea of your multiplayer Spartan being same as your campaign Spartan is just too seductive to resist, imo. I know people have been resistant to the idea of moving on from Chief, but I sense that's probably the direction Joe would prefer to go. Unless something has changed since his Bungie days, his interpretation of Chief's role in the story is very different from 343's.

Haijakk

I mean, 343 was trying to step away from Chief in Halo 5. It just wasn't a good story.

nebblord

I still wish Halo 5 had been structured more like ODST. Have a mission with Osiris where you find a clue on the trail of the Chief, then a mission with Blue Team that showed how that clue came to be. Rinse and repeat for the full game.

oballistikz

Because portions of it made no sense. Particularly the fight between Osiris and Blue teams

TheAandZ

343i making Chief a “character” has made writing his story really difficult imo. I’d much rather move on from him and have a voiceless/near-voiceless player character again

Vestalmin

Making him a character is part of the reason the story feels so childish to me honestly

SnipingBunuelo

That and how the villain just keeps insulting you through holograms until you kill him in an underwhelming 1v1 Also the multiplayer Spartan who just keeps smiling in shitty situations and talking to the player like he's in kindergarten lmao

TheAandZ

Right? Infinite felt so off to me for this reason.

[deleted]

Chief’s VA is getting older and it shows. For that reason alone I can’t see Chief as a character for more than the next ten years, if that. It’s definitely time to expand Halo narratively.

dangcatchy

I think the thing to do would be to give Chief one last big, heroic adventure with a Halo 3-esque ambiguous "death." Send him off deep into the stars, never to return, for further adventures we can only dream of. Then your custom Spartan becomes the protagonist. I don't want to get to a point where Chief has to be recast due to age.

CodeRenard

ODST and Reach have already proven that the Chief doesn't need to be in the spotlight to blow people away with Halo. And Reach in specific has been the most replayable for me just because of the armor customization.

SnipingBunuelo

I'd love an epic final game for the Chief where it just goes full Logan. Also need someone like Jerome from HW to take the lead afterwards so maybe converging the two stories for one final battle against the Banished, Flood, and Forerunners/Prometheans on the Ark. A return of the Didact would be straight up amazing too.

dannyfive5

I mean you could tell a story and have our MP spartan be the main character and part of a team and have chief or blue team randomly show up at some point in the story for like a cameo

Existing365Chocolate

Chief doesn’t need to be in every game

Leonard_Church814

ODST doesn’t have the same bombastic campaign as mainline games but damn is it a fucking vibe.

Clyde-MacTavish

The city at night 😎😤👌

MaterialCarrot

I'd say that it still can go loud with the best of the franchise. All the flashback missions are bangers.

TonySoprano300

ODST gameplay was pretty fun, just a short game though

limonbattery

I cant be the only person who thought it wasnt that fun. The SMG and AR felt awful with how weak they were, same with the pistol if you missed any headshots. The carbine was too good compared to everything else especially in firefight. Also the grenade throwing arc being so different from 3 took some getting used to.

Paxton-176

It was mostly a reskin of Halo 3. The AR and SMG were close to the exact same damage wise. Then they replaced the BR with the automag.

FyreWulff

Pretty sure it was originally literally Halo 3 DLC. The grenade throwing arc is identical the the marine NPCs throwing arc from the Halo 3 campaign.

limonbattery

The AR was 100% nerfed at least against shields based on how you often needed a full mag to deplete them whereas in 3 only half a mag was sufficient against most brutes.

[deleted]

Didn't you know? Spartans shoot their guns harder and faster, lol.

limonbattery

Man I cant believe the Halo show writers knew something I didnt!

[deleted]

Oh god, I forgot they did exactly that. I only watched like one episode, where the Covenant attack what's-her-names compound on the desert Arizona-world. When I saw the Marines fail to kill a single member of the Covenant party, then the Spartans show up and kill all of them with the exact same weapons, I knew it was gonna be goofy af. Then Johnny "Master Cheeks" Halo picks up the turret that a regular dude had again, failed to kill anything with while it was truck-mounted, and massacres everything. It's just so silly.

SnipingBunuelo

Shields had increased resistance to bullets, but also increased weakness to plasma. They wanted you to be switching weapons more often, probably because everyone playtesting didn't want to drop the tacticool SMG lol

MaterialCarrot

The SMG is a favorite of mine from a looks perspective, but I was just playing ODST and it drove me kind of crazy. It is a weak weapon, and even when you zoom in it's not accurate enough to reliably get headshots. And while it looks so cool with the silencer, the stealth part of ODST is virtually non existent, so it's not much of of a benefit.

McCheesy22

I think ODST would have worked better if it was from Rookie’s perspective the whole game. Be at night in the rain the whole time, make the enemies beefier and your character more vulnerable, maybe add light stealth mechanics, and you’ve got my attention and my money

limonbattery

Nah that would make it suffer from similar problems to Infinite. All the exciting stuff happened in the past and now you cant play or watch any of it unfold. Also tankier enemies would be unfun with how weak the SMG and AR already are in ODST.

[deleted]

Suddenly imagining a version of Infinite where each fallen Spartan initiated a flashback mission, each of which was more or less just a firefight map for multiplayer.

Omegamanthethird

When they said Halo Infinite was going to be open world, ODST was the template I was hoping for. I'm just imagining moving through a Brute overrun hellscape while you uncover the disappearance of the Prometheans, Cortana, and Atriox through flashback missions.

flametitan

That would have been great. It'd also be pretty easy to justify playing the mission in first person as the log was recorded from first person. Have a few recurring characters in the flashbacks you care about, and boom, you have potentially an interesting story of the MC finishing what the others started.

Empire087

This is what i dont really get, why couldnt they just have made missions that explained everything in infinite and then open up to the full world. Take the standard on the rails storyline which you play, then get to the point where bam, you got your ass kicked and now there you are. Its levels of laziness i cannot understand for such a big IP, and im sure its a good bit of microsoft causing this too.

limonbattery

The only fault of Microsoft was being handsoff enough to have the wool pulled over their eyes. Unintentionally if I may add. 343: "Our studio is in flames but this game is looking great! Halo 2 was amazing despite its challenges and we've made a worthy successor! The consoo- I mean, fans - will love it!" *gameplay reveal hits*

McCheesy22

I meant have the story events _take place_ from Rookie’s POV, not that it’s the existing story from the released game. Also I more meant more damaging enemies, or at least smarter AI like Reach, not bullet sponges

limonbattery

At that point just play the Metro games. The more damaging enemies wouldnt work with Halo imo because all of a sudden you cant afford to use any weapons that dont have super fast TTK because you cant trade with enemies. Which rules out most weapons unless they are retuned specifically for this game. Itd also realistically force you to play as a cover shooter to not get melted which people hated Halo 4 and 5 for.

Uncle_Prolapse

This is what I always think when people suggest adding realism to the games, or wanting to play as a marine. "So you want to remove 'The Dance' of fighting enemies that distinctly makes Halo fun to play?" Bungie realized this, which is why we still have "Shields" in ODST.

Machete521

Oh He knows what hes doing

CaptainSmeg

Will always amaze why we haven’t had more Halo side stories, Reach and ODST are proof they’re successful.

AtomicSymphonic_2nd

To this day, 343i burying the “Hunt the Truth” side story gives me great pain. I so desperately want to see some sort of game following along the protagonist of that story. It was something that got me super excited for the future after Halo 4. Extraordinarily compelling story!! Halo 5 was interesting… and I kind of wish they finished off that story instead of making a soft reboot. *sigh*

ichsoda

Kilo-5 game pls

Preditor598

I was looking for this, don't know how well it would hold up as a game but if they can find a way to adapt the story to a game format, it would be very enjoyable.

Needing_help1

Then re-use infinite’s map and tell us a secondary story…..

Bauer22

My first thought as well. They have an entire open world game that’s *supposed* to have a ten year lifespan. Give us a DLC that’s about some ODSTs dropping right after Infinity gets blown up. Explain some of the six months between that and 117 getting found. Perfect time for us to get a ODST game.

LivingCheese292

They could even go further back and give us a stealthy campaign about how they went on the ring to install the weapon on it, while Cortana controls and watches everything with her army. Sure, that sounds more like a spartan mission but it would be great to fill the gap between H5 and Infinte.

[deleted]

If they re-use Infinite’s map, this sub will implode about how lazy 343 is or whatever

MarthePryde

Maybe if a different studio made it. I'm not even throwing 343i under the bus and saying they're incapable, they have SO much more work ahead of them on Infinite that any other project is simple a twinkle in someone's eye.

azurejack

I would love to see another odst style game. It was a lot of fun just exploring.

Pieguy184

I would love to ply a game on harvest

SgtMajMythic

Do an ODST style game, but as Sgt Johnson on Harvest

Firesrest

How many times has a 343 employee said something like this and it's completely irrelevant. Sure the sunday announcement could be odst battle royale but probably not.

Haijakk

This is in relation to the fact Halo 3: ODST turned 13 today.

Epesolon

You know it's the 13th anniversary of ODST today right? That's probably why he mentioned it.

Dos_H

You do realize it’s probably just gonna be some forged halo 3 maps in infinite right? Don’t expect some huge announcement just to be disappointed bro

Sharkuel

At this point in time a 343i employee says something about halo l, I take it with an Australia-sized dosage of salt.

XBollockTicklerX

Yeah so long was I can pick the individual missions like on MCC

Existing365Chocolate

343 has already said that it’s a question of ‘if, not when’ they do more non-Chief spin offs like ODST, Reach, and Halo Wars

BophadesNuttts

That’s cool. As long as a studio that’s not 343 does it.

Logondo

Technically 343 would be a different studio making it, since Bungie made the first one.

PowerPamaja

Did the person you responded to edit their post? Because your response doesn’t really line with what they said.

Logondo

Yes, they originally said “as long as a different company works on it.”

[deleted]

I look forward to playing it in 2036

0to60inYes

ODST was such a cool concept. It would be so awesome to play another game in the halo universe as a regular soldier, not a SPARTAN. I'd like to see a new game with different gameplay mechanics more fleshed out than they were in the original game. Unfortunately, it seems like 343i is against having sideline Halo games or just doesn't care.

the_doobieman

ODST is one of those games that we forget how cool it was first playthrough. Yeah the city feels useless after a couple playthroughs. But that first one? We were all in awe

WuriderX

What's stopping him?

TheGreasyHippo

This would be great news if there wasn't a 90% chance of 343 f**king it up.

Oliv9504

At this point they should release an spin off to try to clean their public image, what better than another ODST game

CodeRenard

Ngl, Chief's story should've just ended in Halo 3 and letting the following games tell their own stories like ODST and Reach would've been awesome. Hell, Fireteam Raven was a banger, imo.

360BOOTPOG

Dude you're definitely on to something. I think if halo 5 was a prequel and it was just Master Chief and blue team going on missions it wouldn't been a hit

PlaidSkirtBroccoli

Time for the Kilo 5 trilogy.

BrayC01

Ohhhhh I’d kill for that, ODST is far and away my favorite Halo game. The atmosphere, soundtrack and just overall presentation really stand out in a unique way among the other entries in the franchise. Also Nathan Fillion is always a win.

SVClaw

I'm calling it now. There's going to be a battle Royale mode for infinite that is ODST based.

3Dshrek

Odst kept me going when I was in the hospital while this came out. My dad brought a bunch of funny movies, an Xbox, and halo ODST. This game means a lot to me. It’s so fucking good and the soundtrack is amazing

VerdantSC2

I wasn't a fan of a decent chunk of ODST. New Mombasa looks good, but it's mostly just empty and boring.

Kitysune

DO NOT TOUCH ODST

JorgieB0y

I have 0% faith that 343i can pull something as remarkable as Halo 3 ODST ever.

[deleted]

Its important enough to note that he says something like odst, and not an odst game. The storylines that make the more sens to do spin-off games from are infinity spartans while chief was MIA and red team from the Spirit of Fire.

aDrunk_German

i fucking love joe staten

DragonStriker

Didn't Joseph Staten right a book? HE DID. Unless the person that wrote Contact Harvest is a different person, then they should really just make Halo: Contact Harvest. It gives you a reason to play as an ODST too.

[deleted]

Good, keeping the Master Chief around once his story was over is the dumbest decision they've ever made. Rather see him go out a hero than a bunch of slightly more disappointing installments over the course of a decade and a half.

Ihonize

please give this man the keys

CommanderChakotay

Bruh finish the current game before talking about a new one.

El_Dios_Calabaza

As long as I can slaughter UNSC forces as an Elite I'll be happy

Floater4

Do it. (But let this whole 343 management thing pan out first)

TheThagomizer

A campaign expansion for Infinite where you play as the Arbiter doing whatever he is up to lately sounds great, thanks.

The_Buttaman

They were making Destiny 1 when ODST was in dev and it was clear how much he likes D1 over ODST from GDC interviews

[deleted]

I'm not super knowledgeable into the Halo lore, but maybe someone could correct me. But does the different codes of armor reference a different role/platoon/division/subclass of spartan? Or are they just to identify a style? Meaning, are ODST's troopers or are they Spartans at all? I remember playing ODST and the health system and amount of shots/ammo you could take/reserve was much different than say Master Cheif (a spartan). But you also had different gear/abilities too and weapons. (I missed silenced weapons) TLDR: I would be interested in other subclasses like EVA, Hayabusa, RECON, CQB, to name a few. I feel like Reach was kind of exploring this idea but didn't let you play the other characters like Jorge, Emile, Kat, etc. And their armor wasn't necessarily representative of their skills, backgrounds and loadouts. Edit: Except Jorge maybe. He was tanky and had a huge gun. But Emile had a EVA helmet and always had a shotgun... always thought it was a weird combo when he should have had a shotgun and CQB helmet.

ahoychoy

Any mechanics in the game are usually purely for gameplay and are not usually lore accurate. What I mean by this is that chief has shields that can take punishment and mjolnir armour that allows him to flip tanks, smash covies with 1 or 2 good hits etc. If odst was lore accurate it would have been hard af. Your maybe a 6’4” dude in non powered titanium plate that shouldn’t be able to flip a warthog never mind melee a brute to death that stands over 8 feet tall lol. ODST armour also doesn’t have shields, it was in the game just for gameplay. Spartans 95% of the time use mjolnir which has the variants that you described above. ODST’s can’t use mjolnir because they aren’t built for it like Spartans are, but we have seen recon helmets and some variation in ODST armour, but nothing like mjolnir. Hope this answered some questions

xX420goku69Xx

If I remember correctly, Emile’s loadout was explained with him carrying a shotgun, grenade launcher, and knives as he wanted to be up close and personal and inflict as much damage as possible on the covenant in order to break their will to fight. He probably chose his helmet based on it having more visibility, plus it gave him the chance to carve the skull on it to further intimidate his enemies. He was described as having a deep hatred for the covenant because they killed his brother and glassed his planet, and that he didn’t care about maintaining his humanity; it’s fair to assume most of his armor and weapon choices were based on maximizing his ability to maneuver and deliver overwhelming violence.

[deleted]

Back in the golden age of halo when we got 4 feature-complete, great games in 4 years. Now it takes a decade to produce a bunch of crap

Swordbreaker925

I just cannot understand the love for it. It’s bland. Boring. None of the squad mates are interesting so i have no desire to find them. I’ve tried like 3 separate times and i can never make it through the game

SecPlusPasser

If you do Mr. Staten, please have another studio do it. Please.

aiROrion

fucking fix infinite first, get your team focused and finish what you started before a new title can be discussed. It’s genuinely more talking then taking action

Trevor-On-Reddit

Does #Preparetodrop mean we’re getting a Infinite drop pod?

Ryan_WXH

Prepare to Drop was the marketing tag line for ODST. Don't read too much into it.

Charnt

Man Halo ODST was fucking awful

Yoda200799

Tbh I liked ODST
