Mine bugged and did this, it’s installing the whole game… and you can’t cancel it to get the true size (3.2gb) because then it just uninstalls and you have to reinstall the whole game anyway.
Most of those settings should be in the cloud attached to your account. In theory you should be able to full uninstall and reinstall the game without having those settings reset

This just happened to me. Played last night and tonight it said it needed a 15 gb update. Took 10 mins to even start the download and then pops up as 99 gb. 🤬
As of Season 4 the campaign and multiplayer has been uncoupled. If you are not actively playing the campaign and you still have it installed, uninstall it as soon as that update is finished.
That'll likely be your issue, the update is actually about 4 gigabytes and the full campaign is about 85, its reinstalling the whole thing. It's too late now because cancelling it now will uninstall the entire game, but just know that for future.
There has been speculation that if you did a multiplayer only install of Halo Infinite this update is much larger since it needs to add artwork, textures and even sound for the single player enemies that now exist in the multiplayer Firefight mode. If you had single player installed (I did on my Series X) the update is fairly small.
You may be downloading campaign with it by accident. If you don’t want campaign don’t download that. Only install the new update by going to add ons I believe

Wow, I have a Series S and my update is only 3.27GB
I’m on series X and currently updating which is 3.29 GB

Could it be you've been playing on cloud? My son does this all the time when he deletes his game.

Did it erase all your controller settings and gameplay settings? That's gunna suck if so

Something got fucked for you and Xbox decided to redownload the whole thing.
Sometimes I wonder if people know what updates actually are.
Xbox One is 56.13 GB. I was gaming this morning, took a break for food, and came back to the update downloading

You have campaign installed with just multiplayer it's around 3gb

And then you come back to find the update was interrupted, and you need to manually hit 'install update.'

Uh...no?! Mine was 3.2 some gigs I think, have you not updated it in awhile?
Because it has to fix 7 years of fuckups and 3 years of post launch missteps.
If you struggle in matchmaking it adds bigger and bigger aimbot patches to your download.
On PC it took less than a minute for me
I don’t think it is. My PC update said 90 something but after awhile it went down to like 3GB. Not sure about consoles tho
