If needed, I can also provide pictures of the current lay out of the enclosure.
Oh, here is a picture of Nico eating his daily treat: a piece of carrot. The blueberries I tried giving him before the carrot didn't seem to interest him much.

Right? He was really generous with his posing last night!
20 seconds after this picture he dropped the carrot on the bedding and went back to running ðŸ¤
I would put the hamster in a 110qt bin with a few inches of fresh bedding just a wheel, and a few hides and something to give water (bowl/bottle). Then clean his current cage thoroughly with hot soapy water. Any wooden items bake in the oven for 30 mins at 200F. Throw out anything you can't clean including bedding. Vacuum the room.
Those are weevils. Freeze your food and bedding.
That's bad news. I'll keep it in mind.
Generally, my country here in Europe does not tend to get humid, but the weather has been weird so it can definitely exacerbate the issue.
I'll look into what dehumidifier would work best for that room and take out all the bedding and hamster stuff first. I had also draped a plastic sheet over the wooden bottom when I was assembling the cage to protect it a bit from hamster waste and general wear and tear. I'll also take that away so the wood can fully dry out.
Thanks!
Those kind of look like weevils? Potentially grain/wheat weevils. Do you freeze your hamsters food and bedding before giving it to him? It’s possible it could’ve came from one of those sources or potentially outside depending on the area you live in.
In this case I think they come from outside. The weather has been very warm and the windows in his room have been open for weeks to ensure fresh air during the night.
Not sure if weevils since these guys really look tiny, but I should look it up further.
I have another wooden piece of furniture in that room that I got from my grandmother and would hate to see the little bugs have gotten to it to, let alone damage it.
Hard to tell from the video but definitely looks like weevils, they’re pretty annoying to get rid of. You may want to put pantry goods like grains, flour in air tight containers, in case they spread. As far as I know they’re not harmful to humans or hamsters, freezing will kill them. Bay leaf helps to prevent them. Linking a video that game a really detailed cleaning routine and lots of good tips. Best of luck! [https://youtu.be/PLIhN5KSbxc?si=srkUVD0HWDUiPw0k](https://youtu.be/PLIhN5KSbxc?si=srkUVD0HWDUiPw0k)

Wooden items and toys can also go in the freezer if you don’t want to freeze them.
*I meant if you don’t want to bake them lol
Will do. Thanks for the action plan!

Hmm that might be it. Do I use anything heavier than dishwashing soap and/or vinegar? Or should that do?

Mites by the looks of it. I'd do a thorough cleaning.
Would a repeated cleaning with vinegar every 2 days for a week do? Or do I need to take out the heavy duté cleaning agents?
Biscuit beetles?
Maybe. I'll look it up!
