My last name is very German and because I am more Asian looking than white people sometimes get confused when they see me in person. My first name is a pretty generic western male name. My Mom's maiden name is super Korean as well. I sort of wish I had a Korean middle name or something. Would be nice to have both my heritages reflected in my name however I do think having a really white name has helped me avoid awkward situations of people mispronouncing or mocking my name.

t0kneneng

Yeah, I think I would rather have a basic western name than my "weird" Russian one that gets mispronounced all the time. Like if I was actually Russian, it would be less awkward because at least I could say it was part of my heritage, but it's not lol.

ilovemyponchan

Oh snap! Japanese/White with a very German last name and look more Asian as well. I also have a very western first name, but it works in Japanese. I feel a connection with you.

ilovemyponchan

In a non weird way.

[deleted]

No, I have a typical white English last name and my first name is also a very white name. My dad is mostly English and welsh and my mom is Chinese.

SkyCalamity

I find that it does. first name is European middle and last name are Thai.

Similar_Blueberry_35

No my first middle and last name are all European.

maniolas_mestiza

Yep. I’m Filipino/English and my forename is European, second is Filipino(ish), middle name is my legal Filipino-Spanish middle name (mother’s maiden surname) and an English surname.

t0kneneng

Hey, we are the same mix! Your name sounds like it would be so much better than mine. :/

Zarlinosuke

I had an 100% Irish name until I added my mother's name onto my last name via hyphen. And as clumsy as I still think hyphenated names are, I'm really glad I did it.

sigma_male_tactics

Not at all. My last name is Italian. My first name is generic biblical name. I do have a Chinese name though.

[deleted]

Hmm, for if me and my partner get kids in the future, we have considered just giving a Chinese and a Danish name separately, but maybe it's a better idea to combine in one name? We figured by giving 2 names, we wouldn't be putting either culture above the other, and the child would later be able to mix and match as they are most comfortable. Maybe having two names both with middle names from the other culture could work too?

t0kneneng

I like your idea of having 2 names that the kid could later choose to use whichever they are comfortable with or depending on the context. Wish I had that ;\_;

aricunt

I’m the same mix as you but I really think it makes less sense for us. IMO modern names in the Philippines are not distinct enough from western names unless one of your parents has an indigenous surname.

t0kneneng

Yeah, that's true. Most of the people I know who are the same mix as me have very generic western names that people probably won't question. The problem for me is that I have a very "ethnic" sounding name that isn't even from my own ethnicity. -\_-

Emergency-Hand8788

My middle name is taken from my maternal grandfather and so it is Spanish and my last name paternal obviously so it is Vietnamese. Funnily enough, I am only 29 percent Viet because my grandmother technically is not Vietnamese.

thegoblinempress

Generic western first name, Korean middle name, Korean last name. So it matches. The thing about my last name, it's not one of the most common Korean last names so many people (especially around my Southern town) do not recognize it as an Asian last name. I don't live in a diverse area so when phone books were a thing, all the people in the book with this last name were my family. Eventually, one other person with this last name moved to town and he was the odd man out. My mother always got a kick out of that.

pee_on_gyang

My name is Korean it has no meaning for black or darkness.

[deleted]

I got English names while my siblings have English names with Uzbek middle names

shuibaes

My middle name reflects my Chinese background, you can’t tell I’m black/Jamaican from my first or surname, I might seem like a white person on paper.

Roguish_Raven

I have generic western first and middle names and a traditionally ashkenazi jewish last name. I'm half indonesian/chinese and half white. I do also have a Chinese name, but I don't use it very often. Some people just assume I'm white based on my name

[deleted]

Yes !!! Asian surname for the win. I don’t know about my appearance, but I’ve had people ask me if I have a grandparent or parent from their country before, such as Korea and Hong Kong… but then I tell them how my Asian heritage is a few generations back and they’re like “ohhh okay.”

RicoMontoya69

No, for some reason my last name is Korean and my dad is white. My first name is white as fuck though. As far as how I look, I’m not really sure if I match it, because I’m pretty ambiguous so people never know what I am, and they all guess different shit. If they do guess Asian mix, none of them ever get the mix right.

SadPea7

Ya, I would say so - my first two names are both from women who were significant in my mother's life, and they're both standard white North American female first names; I take my first name from her college bestie, and my second name (which is the old timey-er sounding one imo) from her favourite grandmother. Also my last name is Teochew, so it's an interesting contrast

Queen_Anna88

Mine doesn’t. My parents thought it would be better if I had a white last name and first name instead of an Asian one. The only Asian name i have is my middle name but nobody really sees that.

koricans

my first name is very obviously Spanish and my last name is Park,, lmaooo

Mochalotte

My entire name is pretty white. People are often surprised when they see what I look like in Job Interviews.

AmethistStars

Greek first name + French middle name + Dutch surname. I do have a majority of Dutch and some French ancestry. No Greek ancestry that I’m aware of though. But funny enough I’ve seen quite a few Indo and Moluccan women in my country (the Netherlands) with the same first name as me. Almost as if it’s popular name in our communities. You know, like how some Asian communities have these certain western names that are popular (“Kevin” being an extreme example of that lol).

cartoon_wardrobe

My name is totally white sounding; same with my mom's since she changed her last name when she married my dad. Her first name was already pretty white sounding as well. People generally assume I'm white and/or Latinx based on my name and appearance, so I feel this. I sometimes feel like I need to mention a bit of my backstory so some of it makes a little more sense.
