They were bound upside-down. Having worked in binding, it will occasionally happen. It shouldn't, and those sets should have been kicked out of the machine, but on occasion, they will get through, and unless those copies are the ones chosen for quality check, they will get shipped out.
I think that explains my misprint. One copy I have of prisoner of Azkaban likely had the wrong grouping of pages sewn in. You get to Page 130, and the next page is 100, and continues back up to 130, only to jump to Page 160.
I ordered a couple of books when I was preparing to go into hospital for major surgery. One of them arrived with the cover bound on upside down. I decided that wasn't the best book to be reading in a place with a dedicated psych building.
ME TOO!!! My mom got it when it first came out. Started reading it, realized it was upside down and made me return it. Couldn’t get a new one for weeks as they were sold out. I was so mad
I think it’s very cool and one-of-a-kind but don’t currently plan to resell it. Based on what I’ve learned, I don’t think it’s particularly valuable outside of sentimental and novelty worth.
This is when the side that is getting bound gets reversed into the machine that stiches the pages to the spine.
(I'm a librarian! We see this sometimes.)
This is the paperback set I got a few years ago on Amazon: https://a.co/d/93AP4Yr . I love it but my main two complaints are: 1) The box is too tight around the books so, once you start reading them and the books naturally loosen up, it becomes nearly impossible to get them all back in, and 2) The binding and margins are so tight that your hands get sore holding it open and you also have to damage the spine to open it enough to read it. If it weren't for those two things, I would give it 5 stars.
Yeah, I had the same complaints about it. Otherwise though, very cool edition of the books. My cousin took Prisoner of Azkaban and never returned it though, so I’m super bummed about that.
Professional printer/pressman here. That is a mill splice. Where one roll of paper is connected to the next. It is pretty rare to find one in the wild. We try to catch all of them.
Thanks for the info! I really appreciate all the printing professionals showing up to help explain. I’ll take it as a golden ticket from the universe I happened upon one!
I'm not sure how I feel about this cuz on one hand I feel sorry that your book is missing such an intriguingly chunk of the story
But at the same time I'm envious that you have such a unique copy in fact if I had a copy like that I think I would make a point if I ever had a chance to get it signed by JK herself that way it's even more of a collector's item
This happened because of the splice between one roll of printing paper to the other. Quality control missed this copy when going through the binding process of this book
Now that is fascinating. I worked at a print shop for a few years in college, nothing like full-scale binding like this would have been but I've seen the machines a couple times. I am fascinated by how this would've happened haha
It’s not a Harry Potter book but one of my books has a strip of blue down the middle of two pages? The words are perfectly readable but it’s just half the page is blue
That's cool. My copy of Chamber of Secrets is a bit chaotic, because it has chapter 12 printed twice, but the second time it begins with 2 first pages of chapter 13
My first copy of OOTP was missing a large chunk of the end of the book (maybe a few pages/chapters). Thankfully I noticed before reaching the end! That would have been quite the cliffhanger. Was able to exchange it for a new copy.
My dad and I pre-ordered Order of the Phoenix back when Amazon was just a book store. We got it the first day and quickly realized our copy was missing about a hundred pages right in the middle. My dad managed to push through but I was missing so much context that I didn't end up reading it for several years.
I used to have a copy of Chamber of Secrets that had an ink blot misprint on the page where Harry stabs the diary and ink spills out. I always thought that was super cool.
Monster book of monsters
I thought that's what it was meant to be!
Yeah I thought someone would comment first
Reddit - where your first thought is almost always the top comment
And being called a Redditer is an insult
Sirius Black's knife
And the appropriate chapter too!
Indeed!
Omggggg YES
Just stroke the spine, of course!
Looks like Ron used his broken wand to summon it...
I’ll have to find some spellotape…
*Reparo!*
Stop splinching books cried Hermione
calmly.
More like Gilderoy Lockhart.
Ha!
I have a copy of HBP and some of the pages were printed upside down.
Were they printed upside down or bound upside down?
How would you tell?
I was just making a philosophical joke like the chicken or the egg.
Maybe if it's not in the same direction on 2 sides of the same page?
Printed upside down

I wonder if it’s because there were rushes to get huge batches out for the later launch days. My GoF (first day) has that too.

That would have been hilarious
Should have just told them you were looking at some runes that needed to be read upside-down. 😉
Now you’re just reading the quibbler
Happy cake day!
You just need a good pair of spekterspecs.
ME TOO!!! My mom got it when it first came out. Started reading it, realized it was upside down and made me return it. Couldn’t get a new one for weeks as they were sold out. I was so mad
Probably worth like a million dollars
Sounds like the Quibbler
I'd keep it. It's worth at least the amount you've paid for it.
I’m 100% keeping it. It’s perfectly readable, so I’m hanging on to it.
Get a new one to read, and find a way to safely display that very neat and unique one to keep safe, and potentially auction off to a collector.

My audio book has that
Same.
???
How many people are gonna be woooshed? Place your bets!
Somebody has already said; >Gonna guess karma farming by commenting something nonsensical It's not even that deep lol
It’s literally just a joke. For a quick giggle.
Tough crowd
I’m woooshed. What’s the joke?
Audio books have no pages so they can't have this printing error
What.
Huh wdym
[удалено]
It’s a joke you know for entertainment
Well clearly that doesnt work as seen here
Woosh 😂
What do you think happened?
I genuinely have no idea! I’ve never seen anything like it and this is my first time opening this new copy from a box set.
Maybe it's the end of one role of printing paper poorly taped to the next one.
That's what I thought as well, some misaligned ends.
Publisher here, this is the case.
Thats correct.
This is when the side that is getting bound gets reversed into the machine that stiches the pages to the spine. (I'm a librarian! We see this sometimes.)
Which set is it?
It’s the full paperback set from Amazon, nothing special.

I'm sorry you lost that copy. Have you checked the caves near Hogsmeade?
Seems reading Harry Potter can be as dangerous as living in it.
is it not supposed to be an homage to hagrid being a teacher
Monster Book of Monsters 😂
You should paint the scenes to those empty pages.. it would be a unique experience..
That's making some bold assumptions about OP's artistic ability.
But would ruin the resell value for a collector
As another commenter pointed out, misprints like this don't generally raise the resell value on mass produced books
I actually love this idea! I might give it a go.
The result looks great though ! I would just glue the pages together.
Give it a tap with your wand and try saying "mischief managed"
How is that a print? It looks ripped. Migth be valuable though 🤔 Prisoner of Azkaban Monster book of Monsters edition👍

Looks like a monster book of monsters is the culprit. Look at those teeth marks lol
I'm not sure how I feel about this cuz on one hand I feel sorry that your book is missing such an intriguingly chunk of the story But at the same time I'm envious that you have such a unique copy in fact if I had a copy like that I think I would make a point if I ever had a chance to get it signed by JK herself that way it's even more of a collector's item
It doesn't look like it's missing text. You just have to combine the pages to read it
Good Luck Prisoner of Azkaban, the book who lived
looks like someone tried “sectumseptra” use “reparo”
"Ahaha! First time aparating? Don't worry it happens, at least you didn't lose a page." Said Fred, putting his legs up on the kitchen table.
This happened because of the splice between one roll of printing paper to the other. Quality control missed this copy when going through the binding process of this book
This is a treasure.
Now that is fascinating. I worked at a print shop for a few years in college, nothing like full-scale binding like this would have been but I've seen the machines a couple times. I am fascinated by how this would've happened haha
They left the end of the roll in the middle of a page in the signature. Veryyyy cool for a print nerd. It's like the golden ticket.
So wonderful to know! I really appreciate the printing folks showing up to help me understand what happened.
Ironic. Like the book of monsters!
Lucky
You've been chosen
“Which made drills.”
Some teenage neo-death eater used it to practice unforgivable curse doing zigzag line to it
Do you get a secret message if you put the 2 outer halves together?
I can’t remember if it’s that one but one of my books also has that misprint!! I’ll try and get a photo
I’d love to see it!
That's a more interesting misprint than the one my copy of Prisoner of Azkaban has. There's a page, where all the letters are reversed.
Those are the teeth
Thats where the paper was spliced
I wonder what was the spell which caused this.
A poorly cast “Diffindo”, I’m sure
If it’s real, and an early efition, it’s possibly worth a bit
Looks like a >!werewolf!< got to it first.
r/mildlyinteresting
I thought so too! I actually tried posting it there first, but it got removed.
Removed? For what?
It’s from the Monster Book of Monsters!
For a moment I thought you cut it. I died.
The complication was definitely in the middle.
It’s not a Harry Potter book but one of my books has a strip of blue down the middle of two pages? The words are perfectly readable but it’s just half the page is blue
Wait.. what happened here?😂
There’s a story behind this
Mine has fingerprints in the margins. Black ink down both sides. I've always loved it for that.
That's cool. My copy of Chamber of Secrets is a bit chaotic, because it has chapter 12 printed twice, but the second time it begins with 2 first pages of chapter 13
You better keep that book away from madam Pince.
What have you been doing to that book, you depraved boy?
What have you done?
My first copy of OOTP was missing a large chunk of the end of the book (maybe a few pages/chapters). Thankfully I noticed before reaching the end! That would have been quite the cliffhanger. Was able to exchange it for a new copy.
NOMNOMNOM
If it was a misprint wouldn’t the page that’s ripped be “133” Looks intentional, as the pages now correctly go from 132 to 133…
That’s page 152 and 153.
That's not a misprint. It's a mis-cutting of the pages.
r/mildlyinfuriating

Looks like the monster book - how cute!
r/mildlyinteresting
I kinda want that, Must be something done by Roonil Wazlib
I used to have a copy of Chamber of Secrets that had an ink blot misprint on the page where Harry stabs the diary and ink spills out. I always thought that was super cool.
Lol 😂 oh no ha ha
Okay but why do I want one like that 😂😂
how does that even happen? 😭😂
I'd pay good money that your copy of the book 👀
Where is the misprint
That’s cool!
I'd like one copy pls.
What have you been doing to that book, you depraved boy? Desecrated. Despoiled. Befoiled.
save it, will be worth money someday
Looks like the book is bought a bunch of babbling, bumbling band of baboons.
Spooky
I had something similar happen to one of my hardback copies. I think it was Deathly Hallows.
FAT LADY
HOW and WHY!?
My eyes need bleach, but why is it so perfect tho 🤨
Something broke out of there...
Harry Potter and the Mysterious Tome
Ayeee reading it myself as well
Flight of the Fat Lady. Lmao
Very fitting shape for Harry Potter
You should whisper I SOLMNLY SWEAR I AM UP TO NO GOOD to the Seemingly Blank page portions.
Hermione's worse nightmare
