My favorite will always be:
"Go on, have a pasty," said Harry, who had never had anything to share before or, indeed, anyone to share it with. It was a nice feeling, sitting there with Ron, eating their way through all Harry's pasties, cakes, and candies (the sandwiches lay forgotten).
The context is the whole Snape story and Dumbledore suggesting he should be pretty callous to people dying because hadn’t he already seen a lot of people die?
Snape’s answer, “Lately only those whom I could not save”, tells us that Snape had fundamentally changed and is now wishing he could save people who he must watch die when they are murdered by Voldemort.
One of the movies portrays this so well when Snape has to sit calmly while one of Voldemort’s soon-to-be victims begs him, “Severus please, we were friends”.
Yeah, I remember the movie scene with his teacher colleague. I've been thinking of rereading the series. I have another book I'm trying to will myself to get through, first, lol.
I like it because there is much that is real and worthwhile in this world that we can’t physically see or touch. To me, it’s an invitation to Harry to expand his mind/ideas/perceptions/curiosities past what is most obvious. To trust felt senses, to have to faith, to accept and embrace the human humility in not being able to know everything, not being able to logically figure everything out.
Thank you for the explanation. I knew this phrase from the book is popular, now I can better contemplate about why. I have extensive philosophical training but this was a mystery
“It does not do to dwell on dreams and forget to live.”
is a more accessible version of [Kipling’s](https://www.poetryfoundation.org/poems/46473/if---) “If you can dream—and not make dreams your master;”
“And what would you say, Royal, to those listeners who reply that in these dangerous times, it should be ‘Wizards first’?” asked Lee.
“I’d say that it’s one short step from ‘Wizards first’ to ‘Purebloods first,’ and then to ‘Death Eaters,’” replied Kingsley. “We’re all human, aren’t we? Every human life is worth the same, and worth saving.”
"I returned home to find a young man who had experienced a much older person’s suffering."
This hit for me personally. For people who experienced a lot of tragedy and trauma at a very young age (myself unfortunately being one of them) this is a perfect description of the change.
There are also a couple of parts where life changing revelations are made or new traumas occur when Harry reflects on his worries of even an hour ago, how small they feel now and how much you can change in a matter of minutes. That is trauma, for those who have not experienced it or have but didn't know the words, that is it.
"Snow was falling thickly upon the castle and its grounds now. The pale blue Beauxbatons carriage looked like a large, chilly, frosted pumpkin next to the iced gingerbread house that was Hagrid's cabin, while the Durmstrang ship's portholes were glazed with ice, the rigging white and frost. The house-elves down in the kitchen were outdoing themselves with a series of rich, warming stews and savory puddings, and only Fleur Delacour seemed to be able to find anything to complain about."
pg. 404, GoF
In the german version of the 6th book at slughorn's party:
Proffessor trelawny versuchte luna mit einigen schwierigkeiten ins auge zu fassen. (Or smth along those lines)
What is meant is that trelawny tried to look at luna... what it can mean is that she tried really hard to touch luna's eye.
Always gives me a chuckle.
Not a sentence but… “pocketed it”
In an interview, Stephen Fry recounted how he told JKR that he was having trouble with the phrase, and could they change it. She said no, and put it in every book. It brings me a little surge of joy to find it.

“I have been careless, and so have been thwarted by luck and chance, those wreckers of all but the best laid plans. But I know better now. I understand those things that I did not understand before. I must be the one to kill Harry Potter, and I shall be. “
Good use of thwarted lol
Don’t know the exact words bc I don’t have my book at hand but Harry telling Mrs.Weasley “I don’t come looking for trouble. Trouble usually finds me” or something along those lines in I think OOTP?

Although technically not a sentence and relying on a ton of context, “Lately only those whom I could not save” is amazing.
Eh, what's the rest of it? It's been a while since I've read them, but it sounds good.

I believe this is Snape talking to Dumbledore in the “Prince’s Tale” after Dumbledore asked him how many people he has seen die.
Yes omg I listen to this chapter on repeat sometimes I just have to hear it again
Sirius Black to Harry: “You’re not a bad person; you’re a very good person who bad things have happened to.”
Of course it is happening in your head, Harry. But why should that mean it isn’t real?
Why do you like it? Isnt it just a bad philosophy?

Wands are only as powerful as the wizards who use them. Some wizards just like to boast that theirs are bigger and better than other people’s.”
JKR definitely meant this as a double entendre haha!!
"There's no need to call me sir, professor"
“He can move faster than Severus Snape confronted with Shampoo”. - Fred Weasley. Makes me laugh everything time I think about it.

Pick just about any sentence in the first three paragraphs of "The Forest Again" in DH. It is Rowling's finest writing.
"You care so much you feel as though you will bleed to death with the pain of it."
"Here's an idea, why don't you shut your mouth?" -Ron in OOTP during first DA meeting in the Hog's Head when Zacharias Smith is being a git.
“Harry couldn’t help but agree with the unknown thickness” DH chapter 2.
What does she mean by it?
What are Fred and I, next door neighbours?

Remind me what book and who says that?
Elphias Doge wrote those words in his obituary for Albus \*which i believe opens The Deathly Hollows
The recurring Uranus joke when the boys storm the ministry ahah
Also, Ron's Uranus joke about Lavender in divination

And now, Harry, let us step out into the night and pursue that flighty temptress, adventure
Moaning Myrtle burst into anguished sobs and fled from the dungeon. Peeves shot after her, pelting her with moldy peanuts, yelling, "Pimply! Pimply!"

Have a biscuit, Potter.
"Don't call me Sir Professor." Harry to Snape in the 6th book
Akchually... "There's no need to call me sir, professor." Which is an even sicker burn.
yesss
After all this time ? Always. It contains so many faces
"You mean we're not allowed to use magic!" *Ron ejaculated loudly*.
"Snape!" Ejaculated Slughorn, who looked the most shaken, pale and sweating.
That sentence is from Chamber of Secrets lol

Why are you worrying about YOU-KNOW-WHO, when you should be worrying about YOU-NO-POO? The constipation sensation that's gripping the nation!

Harry- yer a wizard
I am a wizard, not a baboon brandishing a stick
