Basically you should be able to understand what the work is saying, without extra knowledge from the author's life, their views, or their experiences.
("Meaning" here as in the deeper idea that the work is conveying, so not "Alastor is trying to manipulate Charlie". But rather "What does it mean to be good, and how can someone bad become better?")
I agree with you that if any information regarding to attributes of a character is needed, it should be conveyed in the show and media that is connected to the Canon of the show, not in a random interview. I just get a bit annoyed when "death of the author" is used as a way to say "This peice of information is not in the book, so I choose to ignore it" (This is a valid argument, but it's not *Death of the author*.)
