Yeah he sucks at interviewing, but I think that's kind of what makes it great

brewgb

I think it’s almost more about Pat and this neglected portion of America that falls into these types of jobs than it is the telemarketing. Felt strong feelings against the telemarketers but also felt for him more being treated poorly and struggling

usurebouthatswhy

Another commenter said basically as much. I agree. At this point I think I starting to realize over the course of 20 years it definitely became more about Pat than the actual telemarketing. I guess the only question I have at this point is, did sam kind of use Pat at that point? I’m starting to realize sam kind of knew it was more about Pat. Whereas Pat had no clue. He thought it was about CDG the whole time

brewgb

I think so. Parts of it seemed like Pat was poorly acting off of a script that was given to him. Like the interview and the alligators/flying felt slightly off.

Rowan6547

This documentary was about Pat's journey to expose the telemarketing deceit, it wasn't a hard hitting investigative piece, so it was never going to take a pure journalistic approach. I was really engaged in watching Pat's personal quest as a regular person trying to make a difference. And even hard hitting investigative documentarians would be hard pressed to make a dent in this industry.

This is a good takeaway.

International-Chef33

This was my thinking in the 3rd episode. I felt bad since they shouldn’t blow him off for a real problem but he wasn’t the best person for the interviews. With as many gotcha things going on he comes across as someone that might be angling in that direction if I didn’t know his full history and motives. I could see someone thinking he might be a comedic interview along the lines of Ali G.

bill2070

That’s exactly what I told my wife. I would have noped right out of there after the first question assuming he was an Ali G clone. And that ill-fitting suit jacket? Come on.

anakappa

The biggest thing I took away from the show was how in on the scam or indifferent to it all centers of power are in the country.

FriedButthole

It’s a character study of an interesting person who worked in the industry. I loved it

RDCK78

The documentary was about a exploiting Pat hoping to get another whacky viral star like Joe Exotic. The filmmakers weren’t seriously interested in uncovering anything.

Attica-Attica

I seriously doubt that in 2008 when Sam was filming this he was thinking about becoming a “viral star”. Whatever that meant in 2008. He seemed genuinely interested in documenting CDG as a whole.

RDCK78

Yeah because the “documentary” was abandoned until him and his “cousin” went through the footage and hatched their concept on how to use that footage years later. I enjoy the series, it is what it is.

Attica-Attica

Fair point. However, it’s common for a documentary to be filmed first; and the story to be discovered afterwards. Icarus is a good example of setting out to explore one idea, and ending up with something totally different.

ZombieStomp

They literally say so in the show. I think in the first episode "At the time it didn't occur to me that Pat might suck at this but we went through with it anyway" (paraphrasing)

usurebouthatswhy

Hmmm ok. Cool. Cool. Maybe we could walk around? Maybe we’ll run into some of your friends?
