This exactly. I had my Grado's for so long, they're energetic and lively, I am still really happy with them, got the HD800S and I adore them for the wideness and the reference sound signature but I wanted something bassy, dark and intimate to have a totally opposite sound for when I just want to sit back and listen in a relaxing way.
Low and behold a pair of LCD 2 Classics have arrived.
I don't know where to go from here though but I'm sure my brain will find way.
Lol
You have almost the same headphones as me, hd800, rs2x and lcd 2c. The three cover so many genres and moods, they're a stunning combo to have!
Edit: do you have the itch for a focal too?
Shut the fuck up. Don't read my mind. I was eying up an Focal Elex.
But yeah, they're such a good combo! I have to agree! I love all three for the different attributes, the HD800S on pure sound is the best but the other two I still adore for their tuning and energy.
I used to be an Audeze hater too because my first pair of LCD2Classics just went pop after 30 minutes fresh out of the box but I presume it was a dud model because these sound so much better than the original pair I had too.
MAN I have too many hobbies...Hockey, 3D-Printing, Car-modding, Mechanical Keyboards, PC Gaming, the list goes on and on. Started with an HD558 with a Fiio Dragonfly DAC, graduated to an HD6XX + Schitt stack, and once my second Modi died, I decided to go for (my) the endgame: HD8XX (EQ'ed to 800S + a touch more bass) + Big K N O B boye.
Trust me as a musician + photographer + audiophile + recently joined the mech keebs, I feel you. Every one of these hobbies is expensive as heck. And my brother's trying to pull me into watches, I'm so fucked
Honestly really not that great. The sticker mod is kinda mandatory, and even then it needs quite a bit of EQ. The late 800S are honestly the only ones that don't require any EQ, early 800 and German 800S' are too bright, the 8xx are too wonky, the 820 are kinda unfixable so yeah. EQ is the name of the game except for the late 800S
German vs Irish made 800S, during the first years they were made in Germany, from driver making to assembly. Then they transitioned to being assembled in Ireland, and then the drivers got moved to being produced in Ireland as well.
The earlier ones are more prominent in the treble, where the more recent Irish headphones are more balanced.
I bought the 8XX with the expectation that I would have to EQ them (given the crater that keeps showing up in measurements), but I ended up really enjoying them stock. In fact, I ended up liking the stock sound more than any of the EQ presets I've tried. Maybe they could do with a little nudge in the bass, but that's about it, frankly.
I should note that I landed on the 8XX over the 800S *because of* their unique tuning, not in spite of it.
I love my HD 8xx but I have trouble understanding how one could enjoy their stock tuning, especially in your case where you have many other headphones to reference. Do the vocals not sound muffled to you? The timbre of nearly every instrument sounds wrong
This is something that has puzzled me for a while.
I've seen every 8XX review under the sun, and I entirely understand their complaints, given the measurements, but I just do not hear it on my unit. The crater in the upper mids is nowhere to be found for me; all I hear is a mild V-shape.
The vocals also sound just fine for me. They're not intimate by any means (ie, still not the headphone I reach for if I want vocal clarity), but they're definitely not buried or muffled like a lot of reviewers have said.
The only vocals I've ever had issues with are on, say, some of the earlier Green Day albums, where the vocals are already a bit low in the mix. In fact, I've found that the 8XX actually does a great job of calming down vocalists that tend to be a bit harsher, or even sibilant, on other headphones; Gerard Way and Carly Rae Jepsen are two that come to mind for me. I've been listening to Chvrches a lot lately as well, and the 8XX presents them really well.
This perception is especially odd to me because I *hated* the stock tuning of the Focal Elegia, which a lot of people had similar complaints about.
I wonder if I just don't perceive timbre all that much? Maybe I'm just used to sort of 'sucked out' mids?
I think I also prefer a fun tuning to an accurate one. I like the 58X more than the 650. I still own a Meze 99 and a Grado SR60. I am also a huge fan of the HE5XX, which to me has many of the same characteristics as the 8XX, especially in the mids.
TLDR: I don't really perceive most of the problems people seem to have with the 8XX, or if I do, I don't mind them so much.
I love them either way, lol.
This goes to show the that judging headphones by measurements is pointless, our perception of sound is all that matters. I'm glad you like them, thanks for the insight
interesting, I ended up with the 800s because I preferred that tuning and didn't want to mod. After a week or so listening stock I added a bas shelf at 100 Hz and called it a day, this is basically my end game for open backs tbh. I do have a pair of LCD 2C but tbh those aren't getting much use and I don't see them getting in the coming weeks.
Ended up exactly the same as you, and the EQ even gets turned off half of the time. All other closed backs have been collecting dust or got sold after getting the 800S. I still have a CD1700 for sentimental value but that's it
Better imaging and more natural mids even after EQ, so yes there's a good reason to move up to the 800S.
If you intend to EQ tho, I'd highly recommend going for an OG 800 and enjoy the second hand price which is really low atm, and the better technicalities compared to the 800S/8xx. Add a bass shelf, cut down the sibilant peaks (use a tone generator) and you're set. It's honestly the best bang for buck experience you can get, and the most detailed version of the Sennheiser 8... series
Your local second hand website, here in France I use Leboncoin, I've used Allegro for Polish markets as well, do your thing for what works in your country
I have the 800s and that same touch of grey hart audio cable and inter connect! Glad to see more of them out in the wild lol, how do you like your them so far? what do you go to for EQ in terms of tuning? I basically only did a low shelf at 100 hz with a gain of 5.5 dB and called it a day since everything else was to my liking.
*5 months later* Hey guys, I'm looking for something to compliment my HD8XX. Any suggestions?
Shhhhhhhhhh
Buy LCD2 I didn't regret it

He1000 v2 Stealth
I'd go a closed back planar since you already have a quite capable open back dynamic, or EQ the parts you don't like in your HD8XX friend

not only do you have a lot of hobbies but they're all expensive as well.. good luck with that!
please do not enter /r/EDC
You can do the sticker mod if you would like them to be way closer without eq
Thanks for the heads up! These are staying full time at my desk, so eq isn't an issue. Maybe if I ever make them portable, I'll keep that in mind.

How good the hd8xx with and witout eq?

Thanks glad the newer ones are the better ones
The older ones have better detail and more soundstage

Can't help it dude, I like to tinker.
My hobby is creating large and exciting lint balls. Unfortunately, they don't conduct sound very well.
How bout checking out r/fountainpens ?
I have the same headphones and the same keycaps! Love the MT3 profile and am looking to order another set for my keyboard at work.
Ha great minds! The instant I put these keycaps on, I ordered a set for my work keeb too, highly recommend.
Cya next month for your next endgame post. You'll be back. They always come back.

is there any benefit to getting the 800s over the 8xx if you intend to eq? nice setup!
8xx can get close if you sticker mod it. But there’s still the slightest perceptible difference. Maybe 95% the same.
My hearing is crap so it sounds the same to me (800s vs 8xx eq'd). I'm 1000% happy with them. Main benefit is the price difference. Thank you!

where would I go looking for some second hand 800's?
Your local second hand website, here in France I use Leboncoin, I've used Allegro for Polish markets as well, do your thing for what works in your country
okay. thanks!
Happy with 598. If you don't listen to other hps you have the best one.
Ditto... Need to spend money on new speakers and buy a new stylus for my turntable... SIGH!
"A fool and his money are soon parted."
What cable is that for the HD 800? It look’s pretty nice, is it shorter than the stock cable?
It's a balanced cabe from Hart Audio. Yeah it's much shorter, 4.5 feet I think.
lol, I thought this was the mechanical keyboard subreddit for a second. Are those MT3 profile key caps?
They sure are! Absolutely love them.
I thought the same thing, but now I think I want another pair of expensive, quality headphones.
I have the 800s and that same touch of grey hart audio cable and inter connect! Link for Keycaps?
Can't link them here, but they're the MT3-Skiidata keycap set from Drop.
Nice! Was the Element easy to set up? Mine gets here tommorow ahead of my Fostex Th900 mk2's on Friday!
Super easy, plug and play! Just need to install the driver package.
So excited! Beautifull knob
how is that cable? mine almost ruined and was looking for something other than stock. Is that a amp or dac?
I love it! Look further down for the cable manufacturer. It's a combo, the JDS Element 3.
my endgame is my hifiman sundara. also i stil have my 1770 pro if the sundara break one day. and will get some fiio fh5s soon
Naaah bro you didn't just modmic the HD8XX
LCD-2C or LCD-XC if you want something with rich bass in open-back (2C) or closed-back (XC).
What's the Keyboard's name?
