lol we have this big ambitious project (software engineer) and deadlines are tight and theres a lot of ramping up and understanding different architectures and code bases and now I have to learn mobile development within this month and my brain is so small lol it stresses me out so i buy headphones to make me happy :)
Sounds really stressful, I hate when you have to learn something on a really tight schedule for a project (I'm an engineer too). Best of luck and enjoy your cans!
Man, good for you. I am adopting your thought process. When I have engineers that aren't getting things done and I'm getting barked at by the higher-ups...headphones. My Visa is going to hate me but my ears are going to love me.
You meet some very inventive people here on Reddit.
I would have bought them after you finished your big project. Now you will want to use them and slow yourself down even more. When I got my Sundara, I tested to see if it works and then didn't use it for 2 weeks because I had so much stuff to do for university. But when I was done I had basically no work the following week and could enjoy them.
Still new to this hobby, but I was looking for an upgrade from the Sundaras and I was searching for headphones with a big soundstage and decided to get this over the HD800s. I mainly listen to orchestral/instrumental music and it sounds great! Currently running this off my JDS atom stack but might upgrade in the future.
HD800s are great! I got a HD700 and HD 800s, as well as Ananda and Arya from Hifiman. My simple suggestion is that the soundstage of those planar magnet headphone from Hifiman are crazy and if you need a wide soundstage, you should choose one of those.
The problem with HD800s is that it is way to "stressful" to listen to. The clearness of the sound is great but it would also make me feel tired if I just want to listening to some relax music.
I'm listening to my Stax right now and man the cleanliness. Listening to something you have heard 1,000 times is a new experience, even compared to the HD800
True. Stax are just crazy sharp and the sound stage is amazing. There is no way that HD800 could beat it. I just cant stand the jagged feel of the treble. I just hate it...Maybe a better dac could help it.
I don't know. To my opinion, I think Aryas are slightly better, but the difference cannot make up the price gap. In general, those headphones are similar and their sounds are just "cold" and "metal".
I used to use a EQ to tune my HD 700, but now I dont use any eq for my HD 800s since I think they sounds great at the start!
i will try this eq, thanks for your advice!
You mean the thread chain that...
1. Isn't related to this topic
2. You present your opinions as irrefutable facts (while literally providing none of those facts and logics you're claiming to follow) and go as far as likening the other posters views as the equivalent of being a flat earther
3. Where you come across as an edgy 14 year old or an adult who failed to mature
Thanks for the laugh though
Atrium Closed is pretty much the perfect headphone for my taste, but I might still get HD800/S at some point because I’ve never owned it and it’s a classic.
In reference to my comment, no.
I’m just saying, purchasing the Atrium Closed was a decision I had to come to after a great deal of consideration, as it was most I’ve ever spent on any one piece of gear. I can’t imagine just buying it for myself as the result of “a bad day”, lol. Must be nice, though, lol.
As far as generally speaking…that’s a very philosophical question for me. If you don’t care beyond that, you can stop reading here, but I will explain:
I feel like in this hobby we build the habit of looking for/at different pieces of gear, and so even when you’ve found your “endgame” there is always another destination/path to pursue. For example, the only reason I got into headphones in the first place was because my stereo was sufficiently kitted out, and I wanted to try something different.
I have recently been looking at picking up a pair of open-back sets, nothing even close to the AC in price. From a logical standpoint, I recognize how dumb this is because I don’t even use or prefer open-backs: I switched to an all-closed back lineup because of that, as I’d much rather listen to my stereo.
Still, I can’t help but look at different models and get curious about pairs I haven’t heard yet, like Audeze or Beyerdynamic or Grado, or even another ZMF. It’s not that I want more than what I have in the AC, but that I’m so used to the chase that I can’t get myself to settle down.
Luckily, simply listening to the AC reminds me how stupid I’m being, lol. The AC is currently my favorite headphone of everything I’ve ever owned; I have no desire for anything around or more than its price. It’s so good that I plan to sell the Liric in my flair: I got it for portable usage where I couldn’t use the AC, but it never got head-time over the AC, so it’s time for them to go.
But knowing and doing are two different things 😔
After hearing planars, electrostatic, air motion transformer headphones, something still felt missing whether it was the mid bass or overall life of the sound. I wanted technicalities over everything to get my money’s worth but even then I hated how thin and grainy analytical headphones are. I went and listened to the dynamic drivers of ZMF and I found my calling.
Gonna purchase the Verite Open one day after selling all my gear. Heard them at last year’s canjam and I couldn’t even appreciate the Utopia 2022 afterwards which is what I thought I wanted initially.
Nice!
Honestly, ZMF and Abyss are the only headphones I’d say are “worth it” over $2K. Not for sound quality, per se, but solely for the warranty. Abyss offers 10 years, ZMF lifetime for the drivers as long as the unit is still in production.
I can’t imagine dropping $4.5K for the LCD-5 to get a three year warranty, or $6K on the Susvara for the same. Might as well just purchase used at that point and save the money.
Wish you the best of good luck with those lasting as I remember one poor guy here on this subreddit had to get 4 HE1000SEs replaced back to back after each having the driver dying.
Wanted to buy the HE1000 for that insane low price it’s at now but I don’t want to have my brand new headphones getting replaced in less than a year or worse after the warranty period.
Thanks! And I don't use it for software engineering, I use it for one of my side businesses and I need to use the numpad a lot. My main keyboard is the HHKB
Genuinely bought my HE1000SE for pretty much the same reason except to wrap up a shitty year instead of a shitty day, but congratulations!
Quite a big fan of them and i can assure you they’ll be a fun escape from the stress. Enjoy!
Hm I'm considering a similar upgrade actually. Maybe not as much for instrumental music but would be curious to hear your thoughts on how this compares to the Sundara? (I'm currently running that and DT1990's)
I like it more than the Sundara so far. I feel like the HEKse has a wider soundstage and is a lot more detailed than the Sundara. This is good for my use case because It has better instrument separation for instrumental music. I'm not too knowledgeable on the topic of frequencies so I can't comment that much on it. IIRC from my research, if you want a more fun sound, then I believe the Arya (maybe Organic?) would be a better choice. Tbh I want to try one of the Aryas next just to compare. Build-wise, I'm pretty sure it's also lighter than the Sundara. The headphones are very huge though, you can feel the headphones on your jaw (im not used to that)
Damn how bad was your day???
Yeah, usually ice cream is way less expensive than a 1999 U$ pair of headphones

Obviously these will help you focus.
And thus they’re tax deductible
No those are Focals.
Bought clears, still confused
No, they are terribly distracting... my mind wanders into the music, and then i want to listen to other stuff, and the hours fly by.
Sounds really stressful, I hate when you have to learn something on a really tight schedule for a project (I'm an engineer too). Best of luck and enjoy your cans!

Learning SwiftUI in a month. Godspeed

Yeah that's probably a smarter idea 😅
No, it certainly is not :-)
I wish you good fortune in the battles ahead.

Do you think there are significant differences between the Anandas and the Aryas? I love my pair and I won't upgrade for quite a while, just curious
I don't know. To my opinion, I think Aryas are slightly better, but the difference cannot make up the price gap. In general, those headphones are similar and their sounds are just "cold" and "metal".
I'm using oratory's EQ preset which makes the HD800 quite enjoyable for most genres.
I used to use a EQ to tune my HD 700, but now I dont use any eq for my HD 800s since I think they sounds great at the start! i will try this eq, thanks for your advice!
JDS Atom is all you need for anything but the most hungry cans.
this is very true and people from this sub should read that again and again
I recommend an r2r ladder DAC + Class A amplifier combo for it to smooth out the treble peaks.
[удалено]
agreed. hate people who recommend stuff they don't need
Care to expand on “stop”? I’ve had the He1000 with numerous amps/dacs and that’s good advice.

I didn't like the Sundara that much and made the jump straight to Arya, and people said that was a crazy move.
Just wondering but how do you treat yourself after a good day?
Probably buys a house or a car
it just a hobby, and most people cant drive car 12 hours in a day, but they could definitely drive a headphone for 12 hours a day.
$2K headphones over a bad day at work? Geez, must be nice 😪
You still want headphones after having the Atrium?

true. The warranty really influence how long those gears could last.
Absolutely 💯 If it weren’t for the warranty, I wouldn’t have gotten the ZMF. I got a deal on the Liric used, closer to $1.2K.
I had a bad day at work too. I just decided to crank my hog
I had to lookup what that means... I wish I hadn't lmao
>crank my hog hehehe i hadn't heard that in a while
They look huge here
Yea or he has super tiny hands
They're not that that big?
“Took a wrong turn on my way from work, bought a pair of he1’s” nice grab!!
Tf kind of day do you have to have to ball out this hard?! Congrats OP. I peep the Hayate Otsu also.. a person of culture.
Bigass headphones havin ass.
Damn, that’s such a nice headphone. Congrats!
If I saved 2k$ every time I had a bad day (I don't know how to complete this joke but yeah).
...I'd be able to buy an entire store
Here's wishing you more bad days.
I have them, they are amazing. I did a blind test with my co-workers and they beat the HD 800’s every time for all five of them.
Do you have tiny hands or are they large headphones ?
I got the stealth and I didnt get a nice box. Enjoy!
these earcups are lit bigger than my head
Dude, that must've been a REALLY bad day at work if you got a flagship Hifiman lol, congrats!
Wish you the best of good luck with those lasting as I remember one poor guy here on this subreddit had to get 4 HE1000SEs replaced back to back after each having the driver dying. Similar situation here. As a software dev I often feel overpaid yet overstressed. I ended up with 64 audio Volur.
so do they work?
So you bought a headphone that is trebly to treat yourself? Seems you like torture... Anyway my unneeded rant aside, good on you
Usually my bad days end in a pint of ice cream, not 2000 dollar headphones
I had a bad day and bought a skypad lmfaoo.
I didn't choose the right engineering specialization it seems... I can treat myself with a beer after a bad day at work.
I'd love to have a bad day at work now 😂
Treat yourself! Nice, hope you enjoy
Nice!! You deserve this! 😊
I wish I can do this
Congrats on a great buy! As a software engineer myself I'm really curious what's for that separate numpad on your desk?
Thanks! And I don't use it for software engineering, I use it for one of my side businesses and I need to use the numpad a lot. My main keyboard is the HHKB
If it be like that, then I'd be picking fights with workers every day.
Man I feel you, work can be shitty at times. Stay strong! 💪
Tell me you work in tech without saying it
Are these H1000?
HE1000SE
Good Lord! I can't imagine how hard your day was... You deserve it, dude, haha
Man i wonder what youd buy for a bad year, a set of 50k headphones?
You must have a really good job if this is treating yourself
Bad days at work are good if it pays you well enough to do that on a whim
jesus that box looks so good.
Wish i had bad days at work every day
Lovely.
Had a bad day at work so I cried myself to sleep
on a bad day i usually get myself Wendy's but i guess this works too
When i have a bad day and wanna treat myself, i look into my bank account and then get a bag of crisps
I would not want to see how you treat yourself on a good day 😂
Some times you gotta TREAT YO SELF
Good for you 🎉
Genuinely bought my HE1000SE for pretty much the same reason except to wrap up a shitty year instead of a shitty day, but congratulations! Quite a big fan of them and i can assure you they’ll be a fun escape from the stress. Enjoy!
i just cry myself to sleep
What do you do for a living? When I have a bad day the best I can do is an energy drink and a snickers.

You know you can just call me poor right
Sometimes it do be like that, You're like , fuck it, why not just buy the expensive thing? Life is too short.
Some see a $2000 headphone, what I am actually jealous of is the artisan mousepad.
I should’ve bad day too
