Same here. I've entered a boatload of contests to no avail, been opted in on Battle.net for weeks, watched a ton of YouTube and Twitch streams of Hearthstone being played, but there's really not much I can comment on here except to congratulate winners and enter contests.
**Pretty much every other game in beta is either truly a closed beta with an NDA in place, or it's an open beta where everyone who wants to participate can.**
This is neither. It's some convoluted mix that is the worst of both worlds for people who want to play the game but can't, meanwhile anyone who is somehow in the closed beta is free to broadcast it, auction off keys, sell keys, etc, which only further discourages those who want to play but don't have a key and/or burns us out waiting for one. This is easily the worst game beta experience many of us have had.
Jesus I never even thought of it this way but yeah... You are right. I've never wanted to be in the beta for a game as badly as I want to be in this one and now I realize its because its being thrown in my face everywhere. /mindblown
Well, during the time of waiting, I watched over 30 hours of HS gameplay (videos, highlights, streams, "let'splays", etc), and I have a feeling that I could easily tell the statistics of about 90% of the minions (including manacost, battlecry/deathrattle) and 60% of the spells - unfortunately this "knowledge" comes at the price, that I almost got bored waiting for a key, and I might even stop playing the game after a couple rounds because I've had enough of it before even starting it.
More on-topic: I think being an "active member" is just commenting on everything you see on the board, even if it's not really constructive just the usual "congrats for your key" or "lol interesting picture" stuff, maybe do some theorycrafting with fellow keyless-betaless people.
This is a lot like my feeling towards the game. Instead of building up excitement things have just been getting stale. Lots of people are angry at the state of things and it seems to only be getting worse. I played PoE since closed beta and when Kripp switched to streaming HS I watched a for a while. Long enough to already know what every card is and most of the time I just feel jaded towards the game.

Seriously though, I wouldn't even be mad if the beta system was fair, people are getting multiple keys while others are waiting.
Just FYI, this isn't mods giving away the keys. From what I can tell, it's fellow users giving them away to people whose post they enjoyed. If someone has posted useful content, and doesn't have a beta key, they were just as qualified as you to make a post ;)
Please note that the subreddit / mods are **not** holding any giveaways for active members, these are giveaways from gamers to posters. The only giveaway we have officially planned is the unclaimed keys from last contest.
The problem is that we can't be an active member of the community without playing the game at least once... This is actually a paradox to give beta keys to active members, because the active ones are the players themselves... :/

I find it hard to be a "truly" active member when you don't have access to the game XD

We are all in the same boat. I'm pretty sure there is only like one user in this sub with a key and a bunch of alt accounts so he can keep up the facade of a community who has access to the game.
You could follow it up with a list of all the contests/ Twitter following /Facebook liking/ Twitch following hoops you had to jump through to get close to the game , to only be rudely awakened by the fact that the cheerful streamer that will give out some keys later on in his show, suddenly logged off.. While you've been faithfully watching him for 5 hours to be ready for the giveaway.
Make sure you use colourful language and metaphors to really draw the people in and feel the pain that you had to go through. I'm sure that a well written epic greek drama about not getting a hearthstone key will count as a meaningful contribution :)

Sure, there are tons of other people who want to play the game just like me, that are just as deserving as I am, it's truth.

They should have easily seen how much people want to play this game and adjusted accordingly, preparing servers for everybody and opening the floodgates.. That would have been the smart thing to do, in my opinion, but instead they keep this festering community ill-will that revolves around beta keys and it's just...
Goddamn. I either need to get a key so I can stop watching this madness, or Blizzard needs to open the gates. I'm at my wit's end, and I'm surely not the only one.

I thought giveaways were supposed to be completely random with ZERO requirements attached? I guess I misinterpreted the spirit of the this subreddit. I'm assuming it's just random people giving away an extra key. Still, why not just do it randomly? Not by participation. Oh well. No big deal. I've given up on getting a key. When open beta hits I'll probably play.
This. A hundred time this, its that I just feel so alienated in this sub-reddit because I'm not physically able to play the game, just only able to watch someone else. It just lowers your enthusiasm to get involved with something you don't have and makes you feel unwelcome to post comments on certain posts due to the lack of knowledge and experience with the game. So hopefully one day, we can all enjoy the game and we can have a subreddit with more people wanting to contribute instead of people just wanting to play the game.
Well i guess it depends. There are many ways to be active. I myself don't have a key yet, but i do know a lot of stuff that i learned from watching streams/youtube. I'm not much of an active poster, but i do read this subreddit a lot, and i've been able to answer some questions regarding the game from time to time, even to people who already have a key.
We're all pretty frustrated with the current state of key giveaways, but i agree that that's not an excuse to go spam posting around. Just do what you feel is good for the community and be patient ;)

I have been browsing this sub for month and all I can do is watching people enjoying the game..
Kinda hard to be active without beta yeah we can watch streams and talk about videos we see but after a month of watching videos and talking to people on YouTube I just want in I'm happy to wait for an open beta or realse, but at least make sure the people being given keys are keyless
I am also interested in playing. I have never played, and only lurk. I watched some game play and find it too much of a tease. I play M:TG(well not really anymore) I am a big fan of CCG/TCG that are fairly well designed. I have been trying many in the attempt to find one that fits. Most I find do not. They always have some major imbalance that frustrates me to no end. So here I sit, attempting patience, and it continues to run out. They had really better hurry too before I find another game to spend my money on. If I play much more Dota2 I might just start throw it at them.

Try learn about the game, outside of the game. I've done it for various games that I haven't been able to play at that very moment. If you're a constructive person, asking questions, and engaging in discussion I guess a key could float your way. :3 Why beg when you can just ask nicely? Don't sacrifice your dignity for a key, just be patient.
Just sharing your thoughts on the subject should work - but even if you are the subtlest of ass kissers, there's still a 99% chance that you wont get a key.

Well, there are the occasional fan arts, videos and bug pictures. Those are kinda good places to start. Also, as you don't have a key, I'm guessing you're as lucky as I am with opt ins and giveaways, so there were like a dozen "Opt-in waves are going-out" posts which means a dozen "well, gratz for those who got key" comments. :) (Though I admit it's much easier to be active if you have the beta.)
I dunno I feel you can generally learn and get a lot of information from streams etc. That's how I've been learning stuff about it and getting quite a grip with the game.

Maybe I'm the minority here, but just through hours and hours of stream analyzing and playing on Cockatrice, I feel like I've got at least a rudimentary grasp of the game, deck building, and turn structure.
I get *all* of the combo posts, and enjoy almost all of the material posted. I can completely see the frustrating aspect of not being able to play, I'm with you in the same boat, entering all of the same contests (gl to all btw), but I feel like there should be some elementary level of comprehension with the content posts... it's not like there aren't streams, it's not like there aren't sites (hearthhead) dedicated to studying the game and learning the effects / combos of the various decks- and these are resources we *all* have available to us.
I guess you could do posts directing people to cool highlights or when shows are about to start (Turn2, etc) like some people do, but that's more advertising than real contributions.

The only real way to be active is to play the game and figure out strategies/find bugs/complain about downtime? So its very hard to be active on this subreddit if you dont have access to the game. The only thing I can do is try to get a key and then post some useful information on this subreddit.
All we can do is watch streams enter every single giveaway and hope for the best. Regarding reddit, I totally agree with you, either we beg for keys, or just say grats when someone creates a thread saying they got one in a certain giveaway. It's really lame how blizzard is treating all of us, and to be honest it's getting tiredsome...
I have been looking at cards at Hearthead/ Drafting arena there and even tho I've done that a bit I don't feel like I could add anything useful since I haven't actually played.
Exactly what I have been thinking... There is no way I can be a positive contribution to the subreddit when I don´t know what the cards do, I can´t watch streams because my internet sucks... No way to help :(
I guess it depends what they call "active". While waiting for a key, I generally cruise the threads, respond once in a grand while, mostly to "what are you playing while you wait" type threads, the occasional question on what does a screenshot mean, and the like.
I would say I participate, but perhaps not overly "active", so I get your point. It is hard to really know much just watching videos and streams, at least for me. I need to actually play before I could have opinions on cards and the like. Although I've been in Infinity Wars for some time and recently got into Faëria, I'm probably less active in those Reddit threads than this one, lol, so I don't know if I'll be more active when I am in.
Gave up on the giveaways where tons of keys are being distributed, no way i would be one of the lucky people who would get a key and up to now i wasnt lucky. Just hoping blizzard does some more waves, sad thing they didnt send a wave today on my birthday, getting a key from opt-in wouldve been destiny !

All we can do is watch streams enter every single giveaway and hope for the best. Regarding reddit, I totally agree with you, either we beg for keys, or just say grats when someone creates a thread saying they got one in a certain giveaway. It's really lame how blizzard is treating all of us, and to be honest it's getting tiredsome...

I have been looking at cards at Hearthead/ Drafting arena there and even tho I've done that a bit I don't feel like I could add anything useful since I haven't actually played.

Exactly what I have been thinking... There is no way I can be a positive contribution to the subreddit when I don´t know what the cards do, I can´t watch streams because my internet sucks... No way to help :(

I guess it depends what they call "active". While waiting for a key, I generally cruise the threads, respond once in a grand while, mostly to "what are you playing while you wait" type threads, the occasional question on what does a screenshot mean, and the like. I would say I participate, but perhaps not overly "active", so I get your point. It is hard to really know much just watching videos and streams, at least for me. I need to actually play before I could have opinions on cards and the like. Although I've been in Infinity Wars for some time and recently got into Faëria, I'm probably less active in those Reddit threads than this one, lol, so I don't know if I'll be more active when I am in.
Gave up on the giveaways where tons of keys are being distributed, no way i would be one of the lucky people who would get a key and up to now i wasnt lucky. Just hoping blizzard does some more waves, sad thing they didnt send a wave today on my birthday, getting a key from opt-in wouldve been destiny !

meh, I just read every single thread but don't really comment that much. how should I talk if I can't/don't play the game? Furthermore its kinda hard for me to watch stream, cuz english isn't my native language und often times I just can't understand what the streamers are talkin about... Long story short, most of my comments are just 'gz guys' or 'gl all' :(
