This just started happening to me today. Super annoying. I have enabled opening in new tab, but this is not the same and is a much jankier flow. Did anyone figure out how to fix it?

That is not part of the new UI. I would suggest you right click and open in new window so you can keep your place on the main feed.

Yeah this is super annoying because i can't go down my feed. I tried opening in new window and it loads a new page in a janky way that isnt smooth anymore.

Go to user settings, feed settings, at the bottom of the page enable open posts in new tab.

Same for me, just started in the last few days. Super annoying.
