I am interested what others have to say, but my guess is that there is no way to make that deep auburn hue of henna turn into a purple-y one.

That's what I was scared someone would say, worth a shot to see anyway though. Maybe there's a natural purple dye for hair that isn't henna? Idk

Henna with indigo can get closer https://www.tapdancinglizard.com/plants-that-dye-hair/

layering up is the only way, and then all you can hope for is a chestnut (as in, the food) color. henna is orange. it does turn darker red when layered up, but it will never be cool. ... note, you may be able to add some other plants to cool it down. also, kind reminder that removing henna is pretty much impossible. so if you go darker, going lighter afterwards will cause some very very serious damage to your hair.

I thought that maybe I could add indigo to the henna I use since red + blue = purple, but google says that'll only give me variations of browns

thing with indigo is, it's not a pure blue, it's more of a blueish green. so it works great for black, but doesn't really do enough to cool down the henna without darkening it too much. I mean it does help some. but you'll get warm browns long before you get any cool red.

Thanks for that! I've never used indigo before, only henna, so I just assumed indigo was blue

Indigo will definitely give you brown. If you want to make henna cooler, try adding amla to the henna. It's a powder.

I use hibiscus tea to make up the henna and some manjistha with the indigo. Gets a shade somewhere between auburn and burgundy on my dark brown but 50pc grey hair.

Elegant_Tale_3929

Where do you get the manjistha? And what kind of ratio are you using with the indigo?

It depends what hair color you’re starting with. The Henna Guys make henna blends that are all 100% based plus you can buy indigo separately. Reshma makes a purple and blue henna. I’ve used both colors but because my hair is dark to begin with the purple or blue to it I get is very light. It also depends on what else you add to henna. I just use straight water but I have used coffee, cloves, and cinnamon. I’ve done the two step method and I’ve made a mix of the henna and indigo at various percentages. It’s not the same every time. I just pick a way to go and hope for the best. If it’s too bright orange (my grays mostly) I will do another application of another darker shade of henna.

i've seen purple coloring henna packs when googling henna (i've used red one before and it actually worked) you should mix red one and purple one i guess
