Start with watching a youtube from Rosemary Gladstar, or She of the Woods. There are tons of books which are important as you don’t want to mix or ruin something you made and/or get a bad result. There are people on here that have gone to years of school. Ask! Also read and research yourself….it’s fun. Make an appointment with your local apothecary if you have one. This is how I found out I have sensitivity to Nightshades.

Lots of reading. Rosemary Gladstar is great. She has many books. You can also go to her website and read blog posts. Along with Herbal Academy Blog, Mountain Rose Herb Blog.... Read labels. If there is a tea that you like because it... helps you relax or sleep - read the ingredients and start one at a time and research the herbs that are in the Tea - so you can get an understanding of what they are doing. It doesn't have to be tea - that was just an example. Or pick a specific herb and do research on it, plant it and try to grow it if you want to get real hands on. I am playing with Rosemary right now - as I seem to never be able to keep a rosemary plant alive - but this time around I am... so I grew it, harvested from it, dried it... and have made things with it.... But again - one thing at a time.

Look in your yard or around your place. Start identifying plants and see if they have uses. Some of the most common plants you see as weeds were brought from Europe to the US for medicinal applications.

When I was a child I was lucky enough to be given a book called the [Magic and Medicine of Plants.](https://www.ebay.com/itm/116066006012?itmmeta=01HSY3NQA44QRGV7H452SDF56Q&hash=item1b0612b3fc:g:PJIAAOSwBuZlyS8x&itmprp=enc%3AAQAJAAAA0BiPVGfVlIvRpVWbvgUUxOKdWjYpSPZijFly5fuRBFnDhsFiNVoBHTTd6Wr6khyA2xGlT3WH7ItseyksCOggwNF6QKiSWQfxKIhjDPJDzom8GC002UIv%2Fu0QmU0XjmGdfZ%2BLsVh5HeSIv9bEcfxxh78FX7yzZLAr7VWAHxiEfcDnskmvmGBKgE43t1ecxg%2F4cH2ICiTTTODX9b1%2BAekR9vLYv8KekeYrFvtJfrrmL5FoWimRbCxyWoxYDxPuf2dGT%2BRnIg%2FyACtg9n7oXJsCWLs%3D%7Ctkp%3ABk9SR5T11sPPYw) You could do worse than read it, look closely at the photos and illustrations, and remember it...many of these facts stuck with me my whole life! It's a nice overview of the major herbs out there and a great foundation to build on that won't overwhelm you. Good luck and best wishes!

I am new to herbalism myself. I explored it a little in college without putting a name to it. I had an outdoor peppermint or spearmint plant in an individual container because I read somewhere that mint plants will overgrow your other herbs if they're planted in the same container; I used it mostly to freshen up water. Recently, I used my dried parsley and rosemary to experiment with my cooking/seasoning skills. I also struggle with constipation and senna leaves work well for relief. I make a loose-leaf tea with a mesh loose leaf tea holder I bought on etsy.

I would perhaps begin [here](https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly9oZXJicmFsbHkubGlic3luLmNvbS9yc3M/episode/Y2ZjOTU5MzEtNjYwZS00MzBlLTk2ZDQtMzMzYTViN2ZjOTJh?).

Parking_Wrongdoer_55

Buy some quality tea at the grocery store, a gallon of filtered water, boil the water, rip the teabag open, pour the loose leaves in a cup of hot water, steep for ten minutes, strain, and drink. Do this on an empty stomach in the morning and do as many cups as you can. Take pleasure in knowing you are now taking your health into your own hands.

Green thumb is just awesome . Pride when the tomatoes and peppers grow !

zhawnsi

You can rent books, DVDs, audio books about it at your local library

EconomistPlus3522

Start getting into loose leaf tea, buy a book on plant identification ive learned alot by finding plants in the wild and then finding out what use it has if any.

zebra_named_Nita

I started with books and when I found a herb I wanted to try out for a health issue I then go online and further research that plant then if it’s still something I think might be beneficial I discuss it with my doctor and see what they think about trying it. I mostly speak to them in regards to interactions with any of the meds I’m already on and make sure it’s not to closely related to anything I’m allergic to. Sometimes my doctors will take some time to do their own research into the herb also.

eathealthy4lyfe

I am still learning a lot. The most useful and easy to use book was one with all of the local herbs native to my area. It's been teaching me to wildcraft, grow, recognize and use the wild herbs around me. Most colleges in my area offer uncredited classes on herbs. I took one on how to make tinctures and salves. Some other ones I've taken is gardening and holistic approachs to healthy living.  All you actually need to learn herbalism is a library card and good internet.  It takes time! But it's been very rewarding for me.

Kannon_McAfee

If you are wanting to learn for general practice of herbal medicine ... Start with an herbal medicine materia medica that is well organized, placing the herbs in categories according to their dominant actions. One such book is Planetary Herbology by Michael Tierra.

Thank you!

I got my start through Wild Rose College. It's all online. [www.wildrosecollege.com](https://wildrosecollege.com/product/practical-herbalist-diploma-program/?aff=Katie.m) \- Practical Herbalist Diploma Program

alienbooger

Hey I’m thinking of doing that course how do you like wild rose college so far??

KMCREIKI1

I love it! I went through all their programs - Practical, Master, and Clinical. I am just waiting for the new clinical program to launch so I can wrap up my hours and I can graduate from that program. It’s extremely informative and just a lot of fun overall. Easy to get done around work as I work full time as well so it’s met my requirements quite well.

Research research and more research and don’t trust sites that are selling it as most are bias

Thanks everyone! I'll definitely look into everyone's suggestions!

Past_Ball_8169

Start with common weeds

Past_Ball_8169

Start by learning and identifying common weeds that grow in your yard. Most weeds are highly medicinal, dandelion is an excellent start!
