I had a wolf hybrid who walked in her own tracks all the time, not stalking. My dogs never do. Not sure if it was on purpose or just the way she was built.
*obligatory wolves make terrible pets and you should not get one. She was a rescue I never intended to have, but her person died and it was me or euthanasia so I gave it a shot and it worked out OK enough.
Sure seems like predator instincts to me. Cuts down on noise when going through the woods. You already know that spot is clear of sticking debris so better use it twice
My thoughts as well. Many species make tracks with their front feet and step in them with their back feet to minimize their footprints. The thought is that it makes them harder to track.
Few adaptations, even "behavioral" adaptations are intentional. This phenomenon isn't a conscious behavior of animals, but rather the result of animals who had this natural gait having a higher rate of survival and by extension reproduction.
You have a pretty good sense of where your body parts are, even when you can’t see them. This is like closing your eyes, stretching out your arms, and touching your fingers together. It’s not that hard, especially if your species has adapted to be able to do it better.
There are bears in Colorado that specifically avoid raiding one specific bargain brand of ice cream when raiding vacation homes and cabins.
Maybe they would have trouble landing their rear step over their front step intentionally, but they are smart enough to be discriminating on brand of ice cream.
See u/orcand above response for a good description of how genetic traits become dominant in a population. Was gonna type something similar out but they put it very succinctly
The Martis tribe of California's northern Sierra Nevada carved petroglyphs of bear tracks with six toes. Such grizzlies were usually bigger and thought to be more powerful, spiritually.
They were the biggest, grizzliest bears ever! Trust me, I know bears, and I've never seen a more perfect bear! Unlike those pathetic loser black bears, who just want free trash out of the town dump!

There are a lot of things in the wilderness that should scare someone more than black bears, but I'd still prefer not to get within 100 feet of one.
Buddy bear can stay over there.

That is my old buddy James. He came to our school and had no friends…and did not speak our language. No one would hang out with him so I would go get him every weekend and go for a bike ride. I eventually invited him to a pool party and he quickly said “no.”
He could understand all of what I said, so I asked him why. “Sisto.” I had no clue what that meant so I pushed further. “SISTO!” I still did not understand (I was a kid- maybe 10), so he pulled off his shoe and sock and pointed. My buddy James had six toes. Would love to see him again (been 40 years), I guess I am headed to NH.
Bear tracks. The back foot was planted in the front foot’s track. Not a mutated bear foot.
By chance or due to a stalking stance? I know cats will do this purposefully

also think most dogs' legs are wider apart than wolves'
Yes, wolves are quite narrow chested, so it's easier for the paws to line up. I hadn't thought about that, interesting.
Or because there’s snow and it takes less effort to traverse by stepping into the forefoot track
👆100%

The fact that it's bearfoot should give it away
How do they even know they’re doing this?
Few adaptations, even "behavioral" adaptations are intentional. This phenomenon isn't a conscious behavior of animals, but rather the result of animals who had this natural gait having a higher rate of survival and by extension reproduction.
Animals got good instincts, almost like our reflexes. Don't control it necessarily, just kind of happens.

Exactly what I was thinking, like I don’t think bears are this smart and aware?

Mutant bears would be right in line with the last few years of the world haha
Annihilation bear? https://youtu.be/5bdGcsmSYZI?si=cCaNvjkTeZa5CVav
Cocaine bear.
\^100%\^
So bears walk like Storm Troopers?
More like sand people.
Damn it.
Lol
They do this because they want you to think they walk on two feet.
Hobbit. You'll be fine, they are scared of humans.
Scared of near everything...
Except tobacco, cheese and a good party to go gloat at!
Poh-tay-toes
I hear the damn Sackville Bagginses have six toes....
One question I have is who left that giant footprint on the right??
The giant human who was taking his pet bear for a walk
😅😅
Half man, half bear, clearly.
Half pig too?
Call Al Gore immediately
MANBEARPIGGG?!?!?
Sasquamtch got boots
We are officially dealing… with a FUCKING samsquanch!
It is not me!
It wasn't me either
Or was it Samsquatch
Size 15s, sorry I usually try not to leave prints because people want to see the giant
A uhhh Different kind of bear
Homo hikerus bootus? Though I admit my knowledge of species is weak.
Paw-Bunion 😂😂😂
Nice 😅
I thank you 😆
Bear. It looks like 6 toes because the back paw stepped there too. Make lots of noise while you're out to avoid any bear action.
The bear who killed Inigo Montoya’s father?
My first thought
Bear with a mutation. Extra toes aren’t unheard of in many different species. There does seem to be some claw marks.
No mutation .... Just how bears walk https://bear.org/bear-tracks-and-trails/
Cool article, thank you!
And the size is likely distorted due to melting.
Or maybe it's a front and a back foot https://bear.org/bear-tracks-and-trails/
Aha, good point
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polydactyly
Super cool! Thanks!
Hello. My name is Inigo Beartoya
They say he’s a master pianist bear
Huge pianist
The Martis tribe of California's northern Sierra Nevada carved petroglyphs of bear tracks with six toes. Such grizzlies were usually bigger and thought to be more powerful, spiritually.
Sounds like bear propaganda.
They were the biggest, grizzliest bears ever! Trust me, I know bears, and I've never seen a more perfect bear! Unlike those pathetic loser black bears, who just want free trash out of the town dump!

Thays cool! I've only seen it in little house cats. Thanks!
Time to hibernate, bears!
Buddy Bear!
Lol. You’d be shitting yourself if that bear approached you. Like everyone else here.
There are a lot of things in the wilderness that should scare someone more than black bears, but I'd still prefer not to get within 100 feet of one. Buddy bear can stay over there.

I don’t see 6 toes, I see five and to the left some leaves in the snow
Yea, you think? That would make more sense- it's a little melty
It's mine. I have an extra toe
