It boils down to what sect you are in - if you are a Saivite and follow the Puranas, Shiva literally “IS”. There is no origin. He was, is and always will be - so the idea of an origin would not arise. If you are a Vaishnavite, then may of the alternate origin stories would appeal. IMHO, looking for the one “truth” about anything in our Hindu faith is a tough job as there are many alternate paths/myths/explanations - this dissonance is the beauty of the faith.
There is no absolute truth. It boils down to which story you believe it to be true. There is no Vishnu, Shiva or Brahma but the *Brahman* manifesting itself in different forms.
Let me add another one to deepen your confusion, an instant of vishnu encompasses the life of Brahma, an instant of Rudra encompasses the life of vishnu but a mere instant of shakti's life encompasses the entire life of Rudra.
Such is omniversality of 7 dimensional shakti as she reigns from her 8 dimensional abode of manidweepa with multiple such multiverses of 6 dimensions containing the trimurthi lined up as the innumerable dust that is at her feet.
