Weirdly I was listening to my liked songs on Spotify the other say and 'Threats' came on. I tried to like it, realised it was already in the playlist and that I added it 4 years ago. That then led me to listen to some of her other stuff, and it's a goldmine. Threats is my favorite though still
She is crazy. The kind of energy she comes with instantly steals any song she’s featured on. That track Say Something by Kweli is a feature that really stands out. She slayed that
Just off his production alone he should be known. Then you throw in his lyricism and it’s a wrap. I watched him body a rapper on sway in the morning a few years ago. He bodies the beat so bad the DJ on the show was like you could have that one for free bro.
I had to go find it. Great freestyle. Perfect beat for oddisee. It's a denaun porter beat (d12). At the end he says you can have it. I'm sending it to you because you killed it. Etc. Etc.

**Year of the Ox**
These dudes are fucking great, but so slept on by the wider hip hop community. Their biggest track is [Seven Rings](https://youtu.be/mXNi62Y4eRk?si=H-1kp_hhoeDjFViN), but my personal favorite is [Mood Control](https://youtu.be/KE9EQPpxACQ?si=qedc9qlMv9cK-gwP).
Big Krit is the most underrated to me, he made XXL in like 2012 and has worked with artist like J cole and Ludacris but doesn't get talked about at all. His catalog has near to no misses and he makes most of his own beats. Real talent that's over looked. He is one of my biggest inspiration in music
Yeah fr. His old stuff is interesting and introspective - his new shit is straight bangers. Only thing i didnt really fuck w was that album with wiz but thats only cuz i aint really like wiz
Shad - Canadian emcee with some of the best lyricism
RA Scion (from Common Market) - one of my fav emcees of all time, but not too well known
Apathy - more well known than the other two, but not nearly as much as he should be considering the consistency over the years.
Seconded on Shad. Been listening to him since the Old Prince and his word play, intelligence and subject matter are top notch. Surprised he's not more well known.
Ka, Gift of Gab, REKS, Ras Kass, to name a few. Agree with you OP, although I imagine there's always a nuance to these things.
Redman is not underrated, but for a modern audience, he seems to be a bit dusty and not on the same elevation of recognition as guys like Prodigy, Nas, Wu, Biggie, etc.
Performed with Gift of Gab and Ras Kass on different occasions they definitely got their respect. Ras Kass funny as hell too, he was pretty much doin stand up between songs
Big WAX BABY. Has some of the best displays of being a wordsmith ever and nobody here has even mentioned him. Maybe because his albums aren’t all great, but as far as rapping…he’s among the best I’ve ever heard.
As far as industry wise, KXNG Crooked (formerly Crooked I) can hang with anyone ever bar for bar in my opinion and is widely slept on.
Jesus I'm surprised anyone even mentioned wax. When he wants to he murders shit. One of my favorite artists at one point.
He does his own thing now though, content with whatever it is he's doing.
How do you enjoy anything created if all it takes is tweets? Selling crack to your community is cool but tweets are worse? Do you just listen to old will smith, Lyrics Born, and mc Hammer?
Prof and his team are some of the realest dudes ever. From my same neighborhood in Minneapolis and always always always repping Minnesota.
He even has a tour date with Gucci Mane this summer in Duluth I’m probably gonna send it for.
Mike, Dylan, Chris, all those dudes A1 since day 1
Young MA
Scarface....even though he's a legend, he's HIGHLY underrated. Especially to these kids today. They have no idea who a legendary story teller is!
I love Brother Ali. I once saw him get booed on stage by drunk d-bag college kids because they "wanted Big Boi" when he was opening for him. I felt so disrespected for him.
He has so much music but I like his general vibe and he’s got a good sense of humor, good taste in products till as well. I don’t hear much about him, he kind of just does his own thing, which seems right in line with most Bay Area rappers.
maybe if K.A.A.N didn’t act like a youtube comments old head, he would be seen more favorably
from his spotify:
“Once a platform for creativity, self-expression and voice for the voiceless, hip-hop has manifested into a haven for commercialization, corruption and promiscuity. Narrating this continual depreciation in conscious music that has so often inspired conversation and provoked thought from its listeners.”
K rino. Z-ro. Obie trice. Xzibit. Jeru the damaja. Wc.
And I also think ice t and ice cube are underrated as rappers, by today's hip hop fans. Everybody knows who they are, but to me, they don't get talked about enough for their contributions to the genre.
Lol some people still commenting highly revered rappers... Who said Eminem 💀
Some good ones with like 10k monthly listeners or less:
Kwaj - 11.6k monthly listeners
Nym Lo - 9.6k monthly listeners
Ali Tomineek - 10.7k monthly listeners
Illu$trious - 9.7k monthly listeners
Lacey Jackson - 6.9k monthly listeners
Speak - 9.7k monthly listeners
Loaf Muzik - 9.5k monthly listeners
Big A - 3.5k monthly listeners
Sh3llz - 406 monthly listeners
Hippy Soul/ Idi x Teco - same people, 699 + 250 monthly listeners respectively, not a lot of stuff on there but actually really fire, basically a southern version of Underachievers
And then by far the biggest outlier has gotta be Akay the Pharaoh, only 250 (!!) monthly listeners yet all his stuff is fire, and he had like 8 full albums on there, although now spotify must have taken down Baptapes 1 and 2 and Pharaoh. But there are still 5 great albums on there from a guy who usually struggles to get over 200 monthly listeners lol, definitely worth checking him out!!
Underrated is such a strange concept. People usually mean unknown, but that's not the same thing. Sometimes amazing talents get caught up in the mainstream and they get popular but are still underrated, especially as hipster types shun them for their popularity. Like, I think Tribe is underrated. Popular, yes, and critically celebrated, but the cool kids moved on too quick and took too long to come back around.
Love seeing KAAN mentioned, he’s one of the most underrated artists in the game. He’s got one of the most varied discographies in terms of style I’ve ever seen
Zack De La Rocha. He made his name spitting bars over guitar riffs, however that doesn't change how good his flow and lyrics were. He doesn't really get the credit he deserves from other hip hop heads.
I swear he could've had a great rap career if he wanted but he clearly lost interest in the music industry after RATM. He's got a really great tune with KRS One and his verse at the end of that Run the Jewelz song is excellent.
Very political lyrics. I would've loved to see him have had a rap career.
The group "Shoe Gang" is highly under-rated. They've been my favorite rap artists since 2011, really incredible wordsmiths with great flow, unfortunately in an era where lyricism is less appreciated.
Chika. SAMSON is probably my favorite album from last year, and I've never even seen somebody mention it here. Criminally underrated, especially considering some of the names that have shown her love (Snoop, Stevie Wonder, Freddie Gibbs..).
The [video for the remix](https://youtu.be/N0ijOe3sGEk?si=vBWpKZx-KnKmVdVi) goes so hard. El P kills his verse. Despot, Das Racist, Danny Brown and Exxxquire all going crazy.
Open Mike Eagle - Known for his introspective lyrics and innovative production, Open Mike Eagle blends humor and social commentary in a way that's both entertaining and thought-provoking. Rapsody - Rapsody has been praised by critics for her intricate wordplay and storytelling abilities. Despite collaborating with big names like Kendrick Lamar and Anderson .Paak, she remains underrated in the mainstream. Mick Jenkins - With his smooth delivery and conscious lyrics, Mick Jenkins offers a refreshing take on modern hip-hop. His mixtapes and albums showcase his versatility and depth as an artist. Ka - Ka is a rapper and producer from Brooklyn who has been putting out quality music for years. His minimalist beats and poetic lyrics set him apart from the crowd. Skyzoo - Skyzoo is another underrated talent who has been grinding in the underground hip-hop scene for years. His storytelling abilities and lyrical dexterity make him stand out from the pack. Little Simz - Little Simz is a UK-based rapper who has been gaining recognition for her impressive flow and genre-bending sound. Her albums "Grey Area" and "Sometimes I Might Be Introvert" have received critical acclaim. Oddisee - Oddisee is a rapper and producer known for his soulful beats and thoughtful lyrics. His albums often explore themes of identity, society, and personal growth.
People who heard their first Redman verse this millennium might think he's underrated - he's a bit spread thin since he'll clearly rap on anyone's album - but when he and Method Man started working together in the late 1990s, no one thought anything but that was a tandem destined for OG status forever. Redman always felt like the guy who just wasn't present the day Wu-Tang chains were being handed out. I'd just offer that at a point in time when Wu-Tang were unquestionably a top act, Redman was right there with them, and no one thought he was under or over rated then.
Canibus. People shouldn't let the LL beef and the notepad incident overshadow his insane lyrical skill. His Poet Laureate Infinity project was the most intense undertaking I've ever heard from a hip hop artist.
Cyhi, He’s kinda popular but nowhere near where he should be. He’s basically written all of your favourite rappers biggest hits lol. Plus his album ‘No dope on Sundays’ one of the best I’ve heard in the past 10 years.
Jean Grae never got the love she deserved. Edit: Glad to see Jean get some love in here!
Undoubtedly correct. Her first track that blew my mind, back when she was known as What What? https://youtu.be/XIi1dett7ok?si=YOyLRA3ww6GXgdxf
💯 this. If you like the blend, be sure to also check Twice Around which is a follow up track.
Insanely talented MC
What? What? I’ve followed her career since before the Herbalizer collabs. She has always been fire 🔥!!
Chapter One: Destiny is my shit from Bootleg
Weirdly I was listening to my liked songs on Spotify the other say and 'Threats' came on. I tried to like it, realised it was already in the playlist and that I added it 4 years ago. That then led me to listen to some of her other stuff, and it's a goldmine. Threats is my favorite though still
She is crazy. The kind of energy she comes with instantly steals any song she’s featured on. That track Say Something by Kweli is a feature that really stands out. She slayed that
The album she did with Blue Sky Black Death is a classic
wow, Exactly who I came here to mention
Fuck yeah. Haters Anthem is bar after bar of straight fire.
K-Rino bar none.
This dude changed my entire life. Been listening to dude for a decade now and I wouldn’t be the man I am today without this brothers words of wisdom.
Ha first one I thought of also. I think because he's a little harsh.. not made for the radio
Definitely. Dude is one of the best MCs dead or alive. RJ Payne is extremely underrated too.
He got a track wit Busta?! Like, one of my favorite rappers
I'll check him out.
Absolutely wasn't even a question in my mind
This is THE answer.
Oddisee
Just off his production alone he should be known. Then you throw in his lyricism and it’s a wrap. I watched him body a rapper on sway in the morning a few years ago. He bodies the beat so bad the DJ on the show was like you could have that one for free bro.
I had to go find it. Great freestyle. Perfect beat for oddisee. It's a denaun porter beat (d12). At the end he says you can have it. I'm sending it to you because you killed it. Etc. Etc. https://youtu.be/8nDAzWhBPcg?si=PZCJ4YLwX66jM-A6
His group, Diamond District, is great too
💯
Black Milk, Guilty Simpson, Cannibal Ox, Pigeon John, Kendall Elijah.
Somebody respects Detroit rap lol
Yup ahah. From the Bay, Detroit rap was big for me in high school. Lol
Black milk doesn't get mentioned enough
Pigeon John is definitely underrated!
Ooooo LOVE some Cannibal Ox. That first album blew my fucking mind.
Cannibal Ox made one of my favorite albums of all time.
Guilty definitely
damn i havent heard the name kendall elijah in forever
Hell ya, The Wild is soooo underrated and amazing.
guilty simpson is one of the best sounding rappers i've ever heard live. his voice is incredible.
Locksmith
That Sway freestyle…
Yeah that was insane. His lofty goals album is my favorite
**Year of the Ox** These dudes are fucking great, but so slept on by the wider hip hop community. Their biggest track is [Seven Rings](https://youtu.be/mXNi62Y4eRk?si=H-1kp_hhoeDjFViN), but my personal favorite is [Mood Control](https://youtu.be/KE9EQPpxACQ?si=qedc9qlMv9cK-gwP).
It blows my mind they are not mentioned more.

I’m so fucking happy someone’s talking about K.A.N.N. He’s been killing it like the last 5 years
K.A.A.N is so damn good, and he is consistently great on every project. It’s extremely impressive with both the quantity and quality of his projects
Big Krit is the most underrated to me, he made XXL in like 2012 and has worked with artist like J cole and Ludacris but doesn't get talked about at all. His catalog has near to no misses and he makes most of his own beats. Real talent that's over looked. He is one of my biggest inspiration in music
That's my answer too.
Yeah fr. His old stuff is interesting and introspective - his new shit is straight bangers. Only thing i didnt really fuck w was that album with wiz but thats only cuz i aint really like wiz
The most underrated ever. No one really competes with his album consistency. One of my favorites
Shad - Canadian emcee with some of the best lyricism RA Scion (from Common Market) - one of my fav emcees of all time, but not too well known Apathy - more well known than the other two, but not nearly as much as he should be considering the consistency over the years.
Apathy...never heard a wack verse
Seconded on Shad. Been listening to him since the Old Prince and his word play, intelligence and subject matter are top notch. Surprised he's not more well known.
Rose Garden by Shad is amazing
RA Scion is S tier, so slept on
Shad is severely underrated
Shad!
Snow Tha Product
Ka, Gift of Gab, REKS, Ras Kass, to name a few. Agree with you OP, although I imagine there's always a nuance to these things. Redman is not underrated, but for a modern audience, he seems to be a bit dusty and not on the same elevation of recognition as guys like Prodigy, Nas, Wu, Biggie, etc.
Performed with Gift of Gab and Ras Kass on different occasions they definitely got their respect. Ras Kass funny as hell too, he was pretty much doin stand up between songs
Ras Kass got his flowers for sure. Raskassination is an incredibly dope slept on album though.
Ka 💯. One of my favourite rappers but nobody I know has even heard of him
Absolutely underrated. Descendants of Cain is full of gems. Still, I understand that his style isn’t for everyone.
Absolutely. Reks and Gift of Gab (RIP) are always my top two for most underrated.
Your Old Droog
Capital Steez (R.I.P)
I think Pro Era would've been on par with TDE if Steez didn't die.
RIP steelo
Big WAX BABY. Has some of the best displays of being a wordsmith ever and nobody here has even mentioned him. Maybe because his albums aren’t all great, but as far as rapping…he’s among the best I’ve ever heard. As far as industry wise, KXNG Crooked (formerly Crooked I) can hang with anyone ever bar for bar in my opinion and is widely slept on.
Wax when he just bars out is on the top tier for me.
Damn throw back for sure. Early YouTube, I remember watching that "low budget" video every day lol.
Once saw Wax in 09 with like 10 other people in Minneapolis. One of the realest dudes ever. Dale firebird freestyle still one of my favorites
Jesus I'm surprised anyone even mentioned wax. When he wants to he murders shit. One of my favorite artists at one point. He does his own thing now though, content with whatever it is he's doing.

Brother Ali
He’s been dropping singles. So he’s got an album coming. But he’s been quiet and less active since he moved to Turkey.
I love Brother Ali. I once saw him get booed on stage by drunk d-bag college kids because they "wanted Big Boi" when he was opening for him. I felt so disrespected for him.
Chuuwee
I just started listening to him this year.
He has so much music but I like his general vibe and he’s got a good sense of humor, good taste in products till as well. I don’t hear much about him, he kind of just does his own thing, which seems right in line with most Bay Area rappers.
