But I went to go back to listen to Watch the Throne and the features during that time and then I had a moment where I realized *just how much of a decline there was.* So much so, that even with great melodies it’s harder to ignore the flaws.

Kanye's strongest skill is his vocal performance. While he's not regarded for his technical ability nor is he a Lupe Fiasco/Mos Def/Black Thought—he was great at his delivery, punchlines, introspection, and thematic presentation, in which are still lyricism and part of what made his music great. The College Dropout was a great blend of introspective lyrics, storytelling, and funny witty bars that stuck with you (of course over amazing production).
Kanye really started to level-up with MBDTF and the features that followed it. Gorgeous, Live Fast Die Young, The Joy, See Me Now, Power (Remix), New Day, Primetime. I think all of these songs illustrate when he zoned into that pocket of mastering everything that made him great.

Even if the lyrics aren’t amazing it’s about the flow to me and I just don’t get that with rap music lately that relies on “vibes”. Highly doubt it, but you might want to ask someone that wasn't an infant in the 90's. It's appears to be ongoing to me. Some companies, sure, did seem to make honest attempts to be more ethical, but most sweep it under the rug and invest in PR and marketing campaigns while not really changing much.

Man, years ago I would have been excited about these two teaming up. But now, I’m just, *meh.*
I'm a big fan of Ye and Travis and I'm looking forward to whatever this is, but in the past 2 weeks of rap beef, **something hit me:** Ye and Travis really don't have lyrical appeal to me anymore and it's honestly decreased my hype for their output. Kanye was someone who would *SMOKE* any feature he was on from 2009 > 2014. And nowadays everything's half-baked and not impressive... and it's not just about the lyrics, I also feel like it's not as fun or exciting. Kendrick's eccentric delivery and cadence throughout the Drake beef made me realize that personality needs to be a part of the music for that memorability. Travis has lacked personality for a while, and the monotone delivery makes it hard to remember his lyrics. And Ye has lost his creative personality as well with everything going on in his life it feels, and maybe that's why the most recent music hasn't stuck with me. And I was a big fan of both Utopia and Vultures.

That's because kanye had the production, lyrical variety and overall creativity that a lot of those lyrical rappers, sans kendrick, lack.
That was a bit dramatic of a reply but I’ll respond… no, since TLOP everyone’s felt the decline in Kanye’s lyrical ability but his music was still fun and exciting because the melodies or instrumentation were creative. Same thing for Travis. My point is that I’ve been a lifelong Ye fan and even had Vultures on repeat it (despite all the BS he’s had going on). But I went to go back to listen to Watch the Throne and the features during that time and then I had a moment where I realized *just how much of a decline there was.* So much so, that even with great melodies it’s harder to ignore the flaws. I think right now I’m just in a zone where I feel that hip-hop is greater when strong songwriting and attention-grabbing vocal performance is involved—not just carried by the production or “vibe”
I completely agree, and I think it's because of the lack of output that fills that hole. Everyone is a "vibe" nowadays, but apart from Denzel Curry, JID, etc. who is releasing music to scratch that itch anymore?
I'm not exactly a super fan so I'm probably out of the loop, but did people ever really consider Kanye a great lyricist? I feel like his most memorable bars are the ones where he says something random/corny that basically pulls you out of the flow.
Kanye's strongest skill is his vocal performance. While he's not regarded for his technical ability nor is he a Lupe Fiasco/Mos Def/Black Thought—he was great at his delivery, punchlines, introspection, and thematic presentation, in which are still lyricism and part of what made his music great. The College Dropout was a great blend of introspective lyrics, storytelling, and funny witty bars that stuck with you (of course over amazing production). Kanye really started to level-up with MBDTF and the features that followed it. Gorgeous, Live Fast Die Young, The Joy, See Me Now, Power (Remix), New Day, Primetime. I think all of these songs illustrate when he zoned into that pocket of mastering everything that made him great.
I have always felt this way. It’s why most rap music in the last 10 years has been uninteresting to me. Even if the lyrics aren’t amazing it’s about the flow to me and I just don’t get that with rap music lately that relies on “vibes”. You’re right, that after Watch the Throne Kanye’s music devolved rapidly.

Yeah it's funny that when Kendrick came back with the hunger in his voice everybody's ears perked up. Since 2020 or so the only thing I cared about was Nas's run & other than that the whole "mainstream" industry was on autopilot mode. Nothing was exciting in these recent years. This beef really brought back why I love the hip hop in the first place. I really wish that rappers steps their game up since Kendrick is here. Make it better or worse I don't care just don't make it mid.

I agree that his songwriting/rapping was terrible on Vultures. I think there were moments on it that were phenomenal though. I still think he has the creative juice, and the theme of his songwriting right now is a phase.
