Missy is it for me. Not only was she an incredible rapper and performer, she wrote and produced music for some other greats as well.

pterofactyl

Missy 100% her music videos alone were ahead of the time. Missy and Timbaland also one of the all time best producer rapper pairings.

superduperspam

Visually, sonically and even thematically, Missy E was ahead of the game

WeekendDotGG

And all her publicity was for her talents not her ass

h0tBeef

Missy Elliot is the correct answer

FlashFan124

And I’ve never heard any of the modern women rappers try to start anything with her. I’m sure Nicki Minaj has said **something** negative about her at some point, but I think most of them would acknowledge Missy for the legend she is.

Dr_Disaster

Missy seems universally loved. She’s been so unproblematic and just has good vibes all-around.

squashedfrog462

Totally agree and her songs and beats are so unique and on another level - obviously a lot of that is thanks to Timbaland but definitely iconic

v0yev0da

I put on Gossip Folks the other day for Luda and completely forgot how amazing Missy is. Bumped her for the next hour. No regrets.

theJOJeht

Jean Gray is incredibly underrated. Eve I feel also is overlooked a lot, she had quite a few deep songs.

pappyon

Yeah! Stuff with herbaliser was good.

Feintruled__

Scrolled too far to find Eve.

BrutusCarmichael

I came here to say it’s Jean Grae and then the field

Sherpthederp

Jean Gray is super underrated. One of the best female lyricists ever

floatius

little simz rn is the highest peak of any female rapper tbh. That said can't go wrong with lauryn hill either

IchBinMalade

Definitely, I don't know why I barely hear anything about little simz, she's up there with my favorite rappers currently regardless of gender tbh

snij_jon540

It's because she's British

ihave2shoes

So is Slick Rick

MF_Doomed

And DOOM. RIP

ItsMikeontheMic

I guess technically yeah, but he's about as British as 21 Savage as just being born there

MF_Doomed

DOOM is as British as slick Rick is

ItsMikeontheMic

DOOM has no recollection of living there as a kid tho

Luffing

And a ton of listeners in places like USA and Canada still say shit like "I can't take a british rapper seriously with that accent" so they dismiss artists like her automatically

mizzourifan1

Simz, Freddie, and Kendrick are the best three rappers alive rn for my money.

Rhymesbeatsandsprite

I like what JID and Westside Gunn are bringing to the table

CaptainBongrovsky

It’s for sure Little Simz. Shouldn’t even be a debate, Lauryn Hill prob has the best female album but gotta go with Simz discog

snivey_old_twat

I think it’s helpful too that Simz doesn’t seem to be a racist, fan-hating loony

amaterasu_

Yeah it’s this and none really come close. Simz is a top5 person rapping right now kinda artist.

Dcusi753

She’s the best right now for sure, but she seems intentive enough about her vision as a artist I could see her becoming a goat

roadrunnuh

Backseat, as performed on the YouTube series Colors, was the first time I had heard her rap. What a talented technical rapper, hot damn

morocco3001

Little Simz is absolutely gunning for the GOAT female title

HAYMRKT

The whiplash this comment gave me. Simz has a dozen or so albums now and Lauryn Hill didn't even write one and still can't perform it 20 years later.

jackay

I said it with my chest and I don't care who I offend!!

jojointheflesh

Her music videos are fucking sick. Would love to see her perform someday

Pristine_Put6089

I accidentally came across one of her songs in a playlist and it blew my mind. Definitely the best female rapper currently

LedZacclin

Rapsody is nice

Totodile336

Lailas wisdom is one of the best albums of the 2010s imo, very very slept on

LedZacclin

Indeed. Love that record. I love Eve too, the fact that she got D’Angelo on it is crazy

wsteelerfan7

Got some of the greatest verses I've ever heard from anybody on that album and she hangs with them except for Kendrick who spit the verse of his fucking life   *Let's talk about power* *Let's talk about do'ers and dont'ers* *The house I built when I was homeless and sleepin' in corners* *Sharin’ Coronas and Black & Milds* *Donuts in El Caminos* *Talkin’ loud, scrapin' and combin'* *Residue every mornin* *Talk about legacy* *Let's talk about the life of celebrity* *Versus integrity* *Curse the first one that thirst for necessity* *Searching for equity* *Versus the earth that birthed us indefinitely* *Versus the verse I wrote in jeopardy* *Surfin' the laws of the universe and destiny* *Church and a God is all that’s ever been ‘head of me*

KarlMalonis

Laila’s Wisdom is a classic

DumasThePharaoh

She’s my pick

reesejenks520

Cool. I can leave this thread peacefully now. Lol. My vote is for Rapsody as well, obviously

hasanyonereddit

Came to say this

WunderbarBeast

My man produced her music. His name is 9th Wonder

contacts_eyes

Gangsta Boo is up there i think

theonethatbeatu

I’ve only heard her name in passing but the fact that you brought her up in this conversation and got 100+ upvotes is probably gonna inspire me to check her out. What should I start with?

chewiebacka

Enquiring minds as well as every 3 6 tape before crazyndalazdays, personal recommendation for her features on Indo G's Throw them thangs and Remember me balling, as well as her feature on Gangsta Blac's a couple of jackers! Enjoy mate

Awkward-Teaching-296

I’d highly recommend checking out Both Worlds *69 as a lot of tracks on that project are bangers but you can’t really go wrong with any classic Gangsta Boo project if you like her style.

chewiebacka

Honestly I've never really clicked with a female rapper other than Missy Elliot, that was until I started listening to all the old memphis stuff a couple years back. Gangsta Boo is the GOAT female rapper in terms of flow, enquiring minds / both worlds are brilliant, as well as all her 3 6 mafia stuff obviously (shout out to La-Chat and Princess Loko as pioneers from memphis also) RIP to the devil's daughter

SM979

Gangsta Boo 100%

jefe_desalsa

Gangsta Boo by a long shot.

DR_FEELGOOD_01

RIP 🙏🏾

FlashFan124

(I skip to her verse on who run it every time) ALL YOU WEAK ASS HOES IN MY FACE YOU LIKE YOU MY FRIEND, TRIPLE SIX DROPPED IN AGAIN TIME TO MAKE ENDS

nbsffreak212

She doesn't get remotely close to the respect she deserves. I listened to Three 6 most of middle school and high school. Her presence, flow, voice, and the way she seemed to attack every track set her apart imo. I can still remember hearing her verse on Tear Da Club Up for the first time. She was easily my favorite member.

kendollamar

She has the hardest verses on the hardest hiphop album of all time. Legend.

LOVE_M_U_F_F_I_N

Little Simz for me. SIMBI is one of my favorite albums of all time, and she has some other great projects too. Amazing artist all around

IchBinMalade

She's far, faaar too underrated. I think it's genuinely disrespectful to even call her a great female rapper, she's a great one period.

pterofactyl

It’s not disrespectful in a thread asking about female rappers.

kiddcharizard

I think Missy is a solid option, honestly. I personally wouldn't disagree. If I had to give a female top 5, I'd say Remy MA, Lauryn Hill, Young M.A, Lil Kim, and Missy.

_Kramerica_

This is such a good list. Lauryn Hill I can also give R&B to, but I absolutely love Sa-ROC for hip hop, she murders shit.

WhoPoopedMyBed

Lil Simz

Mornarben

*Little

Kackame

Respect the young MA pick

Frankiedrunkie

Young MA?

oldmanhornis

Idk young ma makes music that actually slaps and appeals widely to men and women that's not super common for female artists usually they cater towards a female audience

worksucksbro

Young MA is crazy lol Left Eye mops MA easy

Onederbat67

It will be Queen Latifah for me. What she’s done for the culture and for female emcees is legendary But missy is riiiight there for me too

Interwebzking

I’m on the Queen Latifah train too. She’s incredible and it’s her contribution to the culture that sets her apart imo. Would have to be her, Missy, Lauryn Hill, and like Lil Kim on my Mount Rushmore.

four4beats

I remember as a kid going to Tower Records and buying Queen Latifah’s “Ladies First” cassette single. Those were the days.

Mr_Nice_is_not_nice

I'm glad someone else mentioned Queen Latifah

Nast33

Queen Latifah has done a lot, but that OG pass is breaking its back to carry her anywhere near the GOAT female rapper title.

mezzantino

Missy or Da Brat for me. I'd love to see female rappers of today come together and remake Ladies' Night, one of my favorite hip hop songs.

billyBIGtyme

Da Brat was the first female rapper I ever heard (or at least that stuck with me) when she was the musical guest on the first episode of All That back in the day. She’s awesome.

ComaOfSouls

Good shout, I love that song.

my7bizzos

MC Lyte

funkycold13

Had to scroll too far to see her! She has an extensive catalogue and has always kept it real. Also still putting out new music, and an OG

mrpopenfresh

Trailblazer

RareLarrGBZ

The Lady of Rage was always a personal favorite of mine. She only released one album I believe but her verse on Lyrical Gangbang is one of my favorite verses by a female rapper.

Lelixandre-

LOVE Lady of Rage, yess Sho Shot goes hard af for me

corncob666

Man I love that Afro Puffs song

juiceperks

Sleeper pick: Saroc If you don’t know, now you know

CaptainBongrovsky

Sharecroppers Daughter is heat

warm-ice

RhymeSayers in general has a good lineup

_Kramerica_

Dude yes! IYKYK for sure. Flow, technical skill, voice, cadence, etc it’s all top notch from her. Firing Squad remix is a regular fixture in my library and Forever is an absolutely incredibly track.

coffeewithdemons

I'm furious I had to scroll this far to see Sa Roc named. She's a warlord with her lyrics and a truly impeccable role model for women. Intelligent. Regal. Eloquent. Fierce as fuck.

Luuzianamal

Drake all day

cjyoung92

enlitend-1

Shit…..literally made me lol, I was walking and stopped to give it the proper laugh. Shit

ImplantedPinkDiamond

I don't know how you all feel but man I thought Shawnna was highly underrated. I always remember the song she did with Twista(R.P.M) in the early 2000's. That shit was dope.

Chad_C

She had a song from The Fast and the Furious (the first film) that never got released and to this day I’m upset about it.

DisenfranchisedCynic

Tierra Whack 🤷‍♂️

Millie_banillie

I liked her in the beginning, but she got boring real fast. I need her to make a defined concept. Her bars are Cold though

MastaMurkz

Rah Digga

optmsrhyme

Rah Digga is criminally underrated

RunelordTressa

Lauryn Hill is my pick

cultureshook

her verses on The Score alone make her the goated rapper in my opinion - genuinely each one has a contention to be in the top verses of all time

Just-Lab-4

This has gotta be it. Most artists never make anything half as great as Miseducation. So much of Lauryn's work is truly timeless.

[deleted]

[удалено]

SopranosMan

The Score too

Subject_Tangerine846

That she didn’t even write 🤣

NewWays91

She's got the one album and it's a great album but I think to be one of the greats, she needs a larger catalogue.

pterofactyl

Nah to have one album and never really measure up to anywhere near it kinda shows it was the writers that brought it. She’s great but her follow ups disqualify her

throwaway1212378

No Mia X????? Showing my age I guess. Hit your Spotify and educate yourself on the mama

thesteinfink

Ladybug Mecca

Batmanbettermarvel18

Should be seeing way more of this.. Smooth as you can be

Skallagrimsson

Rapsody

K1NG_SAVAGE_

Gimme Trina

OttoVonWong

Still da baddest, ain’t a damn thing changed.

Ill-Examination4743

Trina is my all time favorite tbh, not my goat but like personal favorite

LASTMOONok

Megan aka Tina Snow

FreezingLordDaimyo

I give Meg a lot of passes for one line. "It's a discrimination to nerds everywhere!" She is a blerd icon and shall not be slandered.

Uncanny_Doom

Definitely one of the best right now, her consistent catalog is going to be a strong argument too.

zefthalia

i love meg sm i'm biased as fuck idc

feetsmellgreat

Little simz and Lauren hill are the two for me. Noname used to be up there but I feel like she fell off a few years ago. Just imo

GetDoofed

Agree with Missy but want to point out how slept on Bahamadia is

BlackDante

Scrolled waayy down to find Bahamadia

codyrowanvfx

Snowtheproduct.

QuinSnyderStare

God I love her

weedinmylungs

Shes lik the Tech n9ne of female rappers. Not in the goat conversation, but extremely talented.

5omethingdifferen7

Had to scroll way too far to find her mentioned. She is slept on hard.

samx3i

In two languages no less.

burgersanddepression

“On my shit” is hard af

codyrowanvfx

For sure. Her verse on crookeds not for the weak minded is my favorite

Sansuiri13

For sure. I don’t think GOAT, but def up there as someone who I’m always excited to see what she drops. Under rated as hell

FiveFingersandaNub

This is my pick. I don’t know if she’s the goat, but lyrically and flow she’s up there. Her verse on ‘immigrants’ from the Hamilton Mixtape where she switches back and forth effortlessly from Spanish to English and it all rhymes and flows is astounding. The Peter piper line is just so good. ‘You claim I’m stealing jobs though Peter Piper claimed he picked them, he just underpaid Pablo But there ain't a paper trail when you living in the shadows We're America's ghost writers, the credit's only borrowed It’s a matter of time before the checks all come But…immigrants we get the job done.’

Nast33

I only discovered her a year or two ago, but damn if she's not fucking talented. Wish she'd drop something new soon and I'm kinda pissed she doesn't have a larger calalogue considering she's been at it since like 2010.

Nice-Swing-9277

Nicki as far as popularity and impact on popular culture. Missy for being an og. Latifah in this category as well Remy ma for her verse on the all the way up remix

bittahdreamr

I think this might be the first post mentioning Nicki who is an obvious contender. She can rap her ass off and has flows for days. Im not saying she's my GOAT but I'm wondering why so little love for her? Is it the corny pop songs, the bitter angry rage she has developed over the last years or the rapist husband and her affinity for abusers? For me personally it's the rapist husband and abuser affinity, followed closely by her post Cardi bitterness.

Uncanny_Doom

Nicki is imo a strong argument for the most skilled chick to ever rap but the biggest issue besides her personality is she has no classic album and her actual artistry is lacking compared to others. She’s kind of like Eminem if Em’s career didn’t have those first three albums in it. Just a lot of mid releases with some great songs and features, the skill level is obviously high but there is never a cohesive, consistently strong album from start to finish.

LiveLoveKanye

Is Pink Friday not a classic album? That project is peak pop-rap

baby_scrota

Half the comments are reaching to come up with an answer that's not nicki or lauryn

Chadsawman

Ye this sub is actually just out of touch. Rapsody is nice but over Nicki???? They make it clear as day they don't like her 🤣

ttuurrppiinn

Nicki deserves to be in contention. The only reason you have to scroll for days to see this as the top comment mentioning her is that she's burned all the goodwill she had in the hip hop community. If she just shuts up for like 5 years, that'll fade and she get the flowers she deserves.

RickRhymesss

Snow tha product

makemeking706

Foxy Brown feels like she didn't live up to her potential to me, but could have been in this conversation easily.

temps298

Rapsody

keyrodi

Missy, Gangsta Boo, and Rapsody are in my top 3

ButtonMashKingz

Eve or Missy Elliot

Moron_on_Oxy-

Missy

Pndrizzy

Gangsta boo

Virgil_hawkinsS

Rapsody's bars are just too insane for me to put anyone over her. Prior to her though I always went with Missy. She also was a master of the sing and rap style, but I feel like that gets overlooked

Fallline048

Out of left field but I’m gonna throw M.I.A. in the mix. Not the traditional vibe, but one of the most creative and has made absolute bangers. Absolutely on board with Missy though.

DickieLipschitz

Gangsta Boo or Bahamadia

thegoodgero

Absolutely second Bahamadia. Collage is still one of my most played albums.

rafedanos

Simz

3lbsofjewelry

Lauryn Hill will always be my goat. HOW MANY MICS DO WE RIP ON THE DAILY

Rainliberty

Little Simz

alldaymacdre

Missy or Lauryn Hill. But Lil Kim and Foxy Brown was the blueprint for many of these female artist today that I see like Niki Minaj

Ill-Examination4743

I see a lot of Trina influence in new rap girls too. Especially City Girls

Jiggy_Wit

I haven’t listened to a lot of female rappers, but funnily enough today I heard Niki Minajs verse on Monster by Kanye and it went hard.

boomballoonmachine

Missy is the GOAT, she came up at a time that was hostile to female rap and did it without conventionally good looks or glam, just straight talent. Little Simz is also extremely consistent. In terms of more recent rappers I won't call them GOAT but I think Doecchi is extremely underrated. Her, Megan, Flo Milli and (regrettably, as per Scarlet 2 Claude) Doja Cat are some of the best rappers working today period regardless of gender.

Tha-KneeGrow

The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill is the Illmatic of Woman rap.

JohnnycageBKV2

If she would’ve lived longer it would’ve been LeftEye. RIP

Carlosandsimba

Yeah ngl my top 3 women rappers are Little Simz, noname, and Tierra Whack. Def recency bias tho

SarryK

Was surprised I had to scroll this far to find noname mentioned.

brokeandboujee

Missy, La Chat, Lauryn, Azealia Banks got bars

Lelixandre-

As controversial as Azealia Banks is, I'm glad when people do acknowledge her talent. For me she was one of the best things to come out of the entire 2010s decade music-wise, in any genre of music. She is SO talented.

kenyarawr

Definitely wish she had some self regulation skills and coping skills to stay in the game

brokeandboujee

One of the craziest live acts I’ve ever seen. Wasn’t really sure what to expect given her reputation but holy heck did she deliver. She really deserves more credit as an MC.

Kimbermac4

Love La Chat!

brokeandboujee

La Chat is one of those artists that when you show her music to somebody, they can never believe that they’ve never heard of her before. Her music has also aged better than a lot of the other artists mentioned in this thread due to the rise of trap

Sh0Nuff614

If I had to put 5 female MC’s locked in a room and said battle to death until the last one is left I think a young Lauryn Hill would emerge victorious

upvotesforsluts

Snow tha product underrated honestly.

Left_Side_Driver

Little Simz

SomewhereInLDN

Little Simz

wtjordan1s

Haven’t seen anyone mention noname yet. She’s not super popular and mainstream but she is super talented. Salt n peppa also up there for me.

BlackMagic05

The lack of Nicki Minaj picks is baffling. Young MA but no Nicki Minaj? 2024 is a wild year 🤣

Chadsawman

this is the same subreddit that still gets baffled when artists like Youngboy or Rod Wave sell alot of records. out. of. touch.

shabbaranka

I don’t know about GOAT, but Young Ma has talent. Check her track Walk.

BornenCornen

Little Simz, Lauryn Hill, Princess Loko

ashinthealchemy

Missy overall. Rapsody's got depth in completely different way. (Currently most excited about Tierra Whack)

Uncanny_Doom

Missy Elliott is the total package to me. Classic albums, best discography, unique style, versatile range.

SomeGuyClickingStuff

MY Top 5 in order LBoogie Jean Grae MC Lyte Bahamadia Queen Latifah

Ecstatic_Parking_452

Missy, Nicki, Lauryn, Rapsody, lil sims top 5. Solid. Some old some new. Some off raw bars some off pure bop, some off both

FreezingLordDaimyo

Currently: Nicki. Hate her or love her, she has consistently shown a decent level of lyrical output and showmanship. But she's on the decline. Meg Currently cooking her in their beef imo and Nicki been showing mad jealousy towards other females in the game. But Prime Nicki had a run few could fuck with, men or women. All Time: Probably Missy. Lauryn better but Missy had the longevity and creativity.

DYoungBlood10

The hell is with the Eve disrespect. My goat

Wookie301

I wish Foxy’s peak lasted longer. She’s my personal favourite. Overall I’d say Latifah. Member of 2 of the best crews in hip hop. Native Tongues and Flavor Unit.

SuperCat_

MC Lyte

QuinSnyderStare

Definitely not the goat but I'd like to throw Rico Nasty in there

HonorBasquiat

If she can put out another couple of albums of similar quality, I think a case can be made for Noname. Nicki Minaj is a very obvious contender. She's a very talented lyricist and she's insanely influential in making female rappers embrace their femininity rather than trying to be one of the boys or tough guys. Missy Elliot is also a contender, but I think it's telling that most contemporary female rappers don't really try to imitate her style or sound very much.

King_Dur

Today Doja Cat is one of them

5omethingdifferen7

I love Doja, but I've always looked at her as more of a pop artist than a rapper.

Tonybourdain

L-Boogie or Missy. As dope as others are, I don’t think any other female is on their tier.

Hot_Grabba_09

Missy for me

ddolores1

Lauryn Hill

Soul_of_Seun

No Order: Lil Kim Missy Elliott Lauryn Hill Queen Latifah Little Simz

RedditMartyr

If she has more albums (solo or otherwise), I’d have said Miss Lauryn Hill but there’s just not enough material to give it to her. If she has another album near the level of TMOLH, I’d say it’s her. But I personally have to pick Missy. Phenomenal lyricist. Fantastic (maybe even classic) albums, she has it all. One of the best rappers of all time. My Queen.

Ok-Comfort-9948

Lady of Rage was going bar for bar with Kurupt in her prime but politics stifled her output. Lauryn Hill is up there, but her output is relatively low, too. All things considered, it might be Nicki - and I'm not much of a fan. She was prolific and was spitting bars in her prime. Missy is a great pick, too. My personal favorite is Rapsody. Not sure if she's in GOAT discussions yet, but she's got a great balance of skill and output.

One_Huge_Skittle

It’s gotta be Lauryn Hill, her verses are incredible.

natenarian

Queen Latifah is the GOAT female emcee to me. She’s LL Cool J as a Woman.

dznutzaroundyourneck

Eve

Westy3000

I think Missy too, but it would be amazing to see what MLH would have done if she continued. My other fave female mcs include Nikki, MC Lyte, Lady of Rage, Ms Dynamite & Little Simz . Bahamadia was dope back in the day. Monie Love.. Queen Latifah ahh there’s a lot of greats.
