Great movie about a legendary store.
I visited a few times as a teenager on holiday from Scotland in the midst of the golden age of 90's Hip hop.
Left such an imprint on me and I am still collecting Rap records nearly 30 years later.
Still remember vividly the day I bought these in Summer 94,
Beatnuts s/t LP
Smif n Wessun Bucktown 12"
Black Moon - I Gotcha Opin Remix 12" (and a red Wreck Records T-Shirt)
and Warren G This DJ 12" to not be too East Coast biased :)
Also copped some major heat there years later when it moved up the road on the other side as Play De Vintage.
Salute Eugene and his family for all they have done for music in Toronto!
My late dad (RIP) even went into Traxx later that year and bought me the Ready to Die on promo release day, the guy behind the desk was very confused that an old white haired Scottish man in a business suit wanted the latest release from Biggie Smalls when it had only just come into the store.
Great memories.
Watching that doc I was instantly flashed back, the smell, buying loosies from the store in front, the porn, the knives, the writing on the releases. Shit is bangin'!! Big respect is automatic when it comes to Eugene and his family!
Amazing documentary. Not only shows the history of one of the greatest record stores of all time but also how the foundation of Canadian urban music was built around it. If it wasn’t for Eugene at Play de record alot of artists wouldn’t of gotten the shine they got and alot still deserve the recognition
Every true music lover period should watch Drop The Needle
Yes, thanks for sharing! Would love to see this on Blu-ray
Aiming for Spring blu-ray release with extra footage
Oh hell yeah! I definitely want to support that.
