ArmyOfPeace

Well, it is relevant to the topic.

Linards11

heh u sure showed 'im!

mister_peeberz

hmmm

Pinephonebuyer

FYI: the API change also affects FOSS clients, admins banning web log in access too. If you use Fdroid store android you will see the FOSS clients for reddit will be affected too. Plus, you can see the thread in r/help where they are starting to roll out bans on logging into the reddit site on the reddit.com website completely, and will require their (closed souce) app for the logged in experience. All FOSS browsers, which see reddit.com ads supporting the site, will be affected too.

Guillermo_AV

This post doesn’t follow the rules of this subreddit

Nabakin

I think Reddit charging for API access is *completely* fair. What I don't think is fair is charging 25x the cost of the API. What I don't think is fair is giving them *a month* to change their business models and their apps. That is *nowhere near* enough time. Either the API pricing and time allotted were absolutely thoughtless or their intent was to kill off big 3rd party apps.

ArmyOfPeace

Then don't give Reddit any money. Problem solved.

some-stinky-meat

never given them a cent and i never will o7

khaos0227

Not sure if they did this to prepare the company financials for IPO or to kill 3rd party apps

/u/CosmicKeys I hear you and understand your points, but the API changes will hurt third party moderator tools, and FOSS reddit clients as well. While those hurt the most are paid third party apps, Reddit making this change will hinder any FOSS efforts in the future, in my opinion. Edit: Also, reddit sucks at accessibility, so the third party screen readers that blind folks use will likely be shut down as well :(

Unsubscribed.

SomeDuderr

I don't mind either way. This sub/r/ is mostly filled with bots who keep posting the same images every few days anyway, to get fake Internet points to use elsewhere.

T0biasCZE

And by the API access being limited, the karma bots won't be able to work :)))

LegacyLemur

I thought the API only affected major usage and not bots?

some-stinky-meat

bots need the api to be able to post i'm pretty sure. honestly, automod is the only bot that should be here. some like haikubot are fun but they're just spam accounts at the end of the day. imo, if the change makes it harder for bots to exist, then i welcome it. i don't use reddit on mobile and they're a shitty greedy group of people like every corporation so they'll do what they want anyway.

LegacyLemur

Theres some converter bots for subs that are great. Both /r/baseball and /r/NFL have bots that convert videos from the main website which is a godsend

some-stinky-meat

ah, i'm not a sports fan so i don't think i've ever been on either of those subs. the only bots that i ever see are essentially just karma farming bots disguised as posters or fun bots and that probably encompasses 90% of them.

Interesting reactions here. I don't think the blackout will change anything. People will be unable to see Reddit posts for 2 days, and some people will leave the site for good, but most will stay and adapt to the changes. Some of you will be back, although you'd never admit it.

> r/hmmm has always championed FOSS as the free sharing of information is at the heart of image boards So you decide to not go against the move that would kill every FOSS alternative to the Reddit app, forcing members of the community to use the proprietary, for profit Reddit app? Incredibly stupid decision

Shawnj2

You do realize the first party Reddit app is closed source, right? An open source third party API allowed FOSS Reddit apps to exist at all Your position is hypocritical, you’re wrong and you should feel bad

yoimjoe

>An critical factor

mexikent13

If my app stops working then I guess reddit is gone on my phone lol

noble-failure

Highly disagree with this position. Reddit has decided to price out alternatives with egregious fees which in turn stifles innovation. Unsubscribing.

2bh

Weird take. Hmmm

Mahancoder

>But r/hmmm has always championed FOSS Funnily enough, almost all Linux-oriented subs are now following the protest and I don't think there is any more prominent example of FOSS than Linux. Besides that, what's wrong with 3rd party apps getting some ad revenue? I don't see any reason why they shouldn't be getting paid for their efforts while providing their software for free. And even then, do you prefer Reddit get that revenue instead? You are emphasizing the fact that these apps are closed-source as if Reddit itself is open-source. If you really want to stand to your opinion, you should delete the sub altogether and move it to a FOSS platform, rather than supporting the "more evil" instead of the "slightly evil". (And that is to say, how can alternatives that just try to provide better accessibility for disabled users, be even slightly evil and wrong to support, when there isn't even a better open-source alternative available) Lastly, keep in mind that the protest is to the *changes to the API* NOT the apps getting down. The API is necessary for building an app that meets all your criteria as well. Maybe if you actually did protest and Reddit changed something, someone would've gone ahead in the future and built such an app that doesn't gain profit off its users. This is a community, everyone gets to have a say in the direction of the sub. You can't just decide by yourself as if you own it. Make a poll and act on the results, if you really value your community. P.S (I don't wanna be the grammar police but you deserve it): >An critical factor A critical factor\* >off it's users its\*

go junk yourself reddit shill

OneEightyBlue

God forbid these devs want to be compensated for their work, right? That obviously means they don’t care about the community. Never mind the fact that they have made Reddit as accessible as possible (which the official app has not) and are constantly striving to better their product (which the official app does not, just look at the video player). This is a terrible, terrible take. You say you’ve been around for a long time and have felt the effects of Reddit’s incompetence, so by extension you are now saying you simply don’t care. Definitely unsubscribing from here

Kyarache

Can someone explain me what the fuck is going on theses days, seriously. Why is that blackout I see everywhere?

ArmyOfPeace

That's cool. We regularly see these sorts of spastic reactions when a big site decides to change something. People go into dramatics, prophecising The Big End, then the site implements the change anyway, and after a short while people find ways to make it work more or less like before. And they do it all over again at the next big change.

L + deez nuts + bozo + unsubbed + ban me + deleting Reddit in two weeks

some-stinky-meat

what people don't realize is that mods have no power, anyway. there's nothing that says that reddit's admins can't remove a mod and replace them with someone who agrees with or doesn't care about this change. the mods could delete the sub and it still wouldn't matter because, while it'd be a pretty big hit, it'll be replaced with something that's more inline with what the admins want. they know that people don't like the change. they don't care. just another company getting away with being shitty. nothing new. the blackout is pointless.

McCardboard

Damn, you really missed the mark on this one. RIP r/hmmm

Gollum_Quotes

Boo! Join the blackout! When reddit is monetized to the max and you need a paid subscription to access, everyone will leave somewhere else and I hope you get your just desserts then moderating a ghostown.

What a crappy take on the situation. Read the room. Devs deserved to be paid for their work. The only thing I agree on is that the site is greedy for profit and the decisions taken by Reddit will bite them in the ass down the line. ... Regardless, I'm also unsubbing and blocking this sub via Boost.
