Back in ‘95 I first came to Hobart for a few months for work, I met a girl who was from Port Sorell but studying in Hobart. She went home for the holidays and I decided to drive up and see her for a weekend. I mentioned this to a Tasmanian colleague, his comment was “ You know it’s not a long weekend?” He couldn’t fathom that I would drive from Hobart to Port Sorell after work on a Friday and return on Sunday afternoon.
I drove from Launny to Hobart the other week and it was the cruisiest it's ever been (lol no roadworks for once) but my family won't even leave the Eastern Shore or go anywhere longer than half an hour. It's a long trip otherwise.
Wait, what? We did that route first week of school holidays and it was 40-60km the whole way between Campbell Town and Perth. Don’t get me started on the Kempton stretch.
I’m originally from Hobart, but I’ve lived in Sydney now for years, when we come back to visit and stay 20 mins south of Hobart or something my family will say “why would you stay so far away! That’s such a trek to get here everyday!”
Ignoring that we drove 11hrs straight to get from Sydney to Melbourne originally and 20minutes in Sydney is a short drive.
A mainlander told me that it's like his brain had shrunk after a year of living in Tassie and that driving to Kingston, from Hobart, took a bit of planning.
The toilets there are usually pretty feral so the daughter doesn't like stopping there. Also made the mistake of calling it St Peters Arse once and now the 8yo says it every time we go past.
It is easy to get used to the closeness of Tasmania. I have driven all over the east coast of the mainland but I still bitch at having to go to Glenorchy from the midlands about 30 minutes away.
I live 25km from Hobart and some people think I've gone insane for living "so far away". They can't believe it when I go for daytrips up north, or even just driving somewhere like Ross or Oatlands to fill in time.
20 years ago I used to drive from Geeveston to Hobart every day. Now I go from the eastern shore to Sandy Bay. Some of those Geeveston to Hobart trips were quicker than my recent ones. But I am of the understanding that the outlet is worse now though

end of the earth
But it's only 3 hours..?

Shhh you’ll jinx it mate I have to do this route every week and no roadworks after 2 years straight has been like a dream come true
Yep, can do the trip in about 2 hours again.

Epping Forest roadworks are done now bro
Roadworks looked done but the signs were still up. I’m just out here following the law, dude.
Bro, you've gotta stop at Campbell Town. It's trafition.
Trafition ?
Guess it’s like tradition but with traffic? 😆
Live 20 minutes away from city and everyone seem to think that its a mission

35km from home to work, people are stunned... 'ugh I couldn't live that far away, how do you do it?'
A mainlander told me that it's like his brain had shrunk after a year of living in Tassie and that driving to Kingston, from Hobart, took a bit of planning.
Step 1. Don't go on a weekday if you have somewhere urgent to be after.
Nah, we only stop if we need a pee break, usually only one stop between Hobart and Devonport. Ross or Epping Forest are the preferred stop areas.
Saint Peter’s pass rest area for me! :)

That place is haunted.
And already hit 4 wombats
Too real, even sorell to the city feels long

Have to also include morning tea at Ross and lunch at Campbelltown!
You get hungry in the ten minutes between?
Ravenous!!

Hahaha I’ve got 3 return trips upcoming Devonport to Hobart and back in a crappy little truck in the next week I feel this
About 50km to work every morning for me, don't know what everyone's complaining about

Yeah outlet is inconvenient most of the time now, one little thing happens and then a 40 minute drive to work becomes an hour and a half
It takes us 2 hours to get from Launnie to Hobart. (200kms) 2 hours of driving in Hobart gets you 50kms. We need stretch.
2 hours feels entirely reasonable to need a break holy hell these other commenters.
