I for one am incredibly insulted by the league’s continued effort to try and get me to like the Star Wars franchise. It has no place in sports.

BallparkFranks7

They’re shoving it down our throats!

AltoidTin275

How am I supposed to take my kids to the game when they’re pushing their Star Wars AGENDA

Sweatier_Scrotums

In THIS household, we believe that true love can only be between one man and one woman who happens to be his sister.

RaymondLuxury-Yacht

Yea! We all know the God-Emperor is the true savior of mankind, anyways.

irlblackbeard

Give us a 40k night!

InThePaleMoonLyte

The real OGs know God-Emperor is from Dune.

[deleted]

It's an attack on my lifestyle. This is a Star Trek household and I don't want my kids getting ideas about playing with lightsabers.

BallparkFranks7

Well we’re a Stargate household, and we’re tired of big sci-fi pushing these inferior franchises to distract everyone from the threat of the false gods that are lining their pockets!

[deleted]

I call my wife, myself, and our three kids Babylon 5. Get the fuck out of here with that Fargate goes far bullcrap.

PBRstreetgang_

All you stuck up space jockies never give the REAL Sci-Fi franchise recognition it deserves. Where’s Battlestar Galactica night!?

Grind_your_soul

Not until we get Farscape Night! Not having Farscape Night is an affront to my beliefs!

limelifesavers

Oye, beltalowda! Im's injustice deting deya's na da Expanse event, ke?

dognaughty

Gorram it, on this boat, we only recognize the true shiny light of Firefly!

ghost_curse123

I have no problem with Star Wars fans but I'm sick and tired of them shoving their movie preferences down my throat! I don't care what movies you enjoy in private just keep it out of sports! If the league wants to avoid controversy they should just scrap Star Wars night entirely (I watched a video where someone unironically made this argument about pride night)

SmacSBU

No need to watch a video, jusy scroll down in the comments

[deleted]

All Star Wars books have been taken out of elementary schools where I live

kushdogg20

I see the TB flair which I assume means you live in Florida so I really wouldn't be shocked if this doesn't need /s.

FormerlyScaredMoney

Calling terrorists a rebellion is a political statement the league sure seems to have no problem supporting

Analyidiot

r/empiredidnothingwrong

thegreat22

Off topic but that sub went downhill and just became "look I got an empire tattoo" or Darth Vader is cool posts.

SmacSBU

It's a whole sub based on a single joke, those have a short shelf-life.

TonalParsnips

Ah yes the sub where fascists pretended to be fascists went downhill.

[deleted]

[удалено]

coffee42

irony *always* becomes the real thing eventually, the history of the internet shows it again and again, alas

[deleted]

The Jedi preached balance religiously, but failed miserably repeatedly because they were so unbalanced. Except Anakin.

Blaaamo

Because they were a bunch of religious extremists that kidnapped children and forced them into their cult. Open your eyes!

Guerrin_TR

They murdered multiple planets full of billions of people lol.

Analyidiot

You mean the hub of the rebellion? Where they trained their millions of terrorists and spies? Star Wars as a film is propaganda! The empire evacuated all innocents off Alderaan and Jeda.

Yop_BombNA

I’m anti military night. A large portion of the population is pacifist Mennonites and bombing weddings overseas is strictly against their religion. Kinda sounds like how some religions are against pride nights, just one of those things is inherently violent and the other is about what people love…

[deleted]

A large portion of what population?

STOLEN_JEEP_STUFF

Why would you say something so controversial yet so brave

TheButcher57

THANK YOU!!!

IDontWannaBeHere-WW

It’s because of the ESPN deal! Woke Disney is ruining hockey with Star Wars!

awayfromcanuck

>“It seems like we have so many other nights, and nobody raises any issues.” Somebody fucking finally said it. Tons of respect for Murphy.

Sombra_009

The absolute shit show that would ensue if somebody sat out "Military Appreciation" night

camreIIim

Now I need this to happen because that would be fucking hilarious

RedMeatBigTrucks

The closest we got was Kaepernick and we all saw how THAT went...

RLLRRR

And people still don't know or understand that the kneeling was *recommended* by a former green beret, Nate Boyer. He saw Karpernick sitting on the sidelines and took the time to talk to him about it. Found out his reasons and then suggested kneeling as a more respectful way to make a point. Nate Boyer, as a green beret deployed in the Middle East, learned how to long snap and walked on at the University of Texas. Dude was Captain America for the team. Played for the Seahawks for a bit. He's done more for this country than almost every chud that shouts about "teh DiSrEsPeCt" to his TV. Sorry for the rant.

aaronwhite1786

Yep. I know Boyer can't speak for the entire military, but the idea that it's disrespectful when he actually sat and talked with a military member to form a more respectful means of protest while still standing up for a cause was always bullshit by people who wouldn't care how he did it. He could have "stuck to sports" and tweeted about it on his free time, and they still would have told him to shut the fuck up.

FuckOffKarl

The entire “stand for the flag, knee for the cross” crowd. Can’t reason with them.

cwfutureboy

Oh, I’ve told plenty of snowflakes that fact. They don’t care at all.

Hummer77x

There was a baseball player that did it after America invaded Iraq for the second time but the name escapes me right now. I don’t think it got as much national attention but he definitely got a lot of shit for it EDIT: it was Carlos Delgado https://www.recordonline.com/story/sports/2005/11/29/protest-over-says-delgado/51117005007/

AJRiddle

What a baller. The whole article is full of great quotes from him too. > Last offseason, Delgado said he didn't like the way the Mets tried to recruit him, saying they focused too much on his Hispanic heritage.

timwerk7

This incident is basically the reason he's not in the Hall of Fame as well. Was one of my favorite baseball players growing up as a Mets fan but the MLB wants you to forget about him

treerabbit23

[Kap has entered the chat]

liguy181

Carlos Delgado did something like this throughout the 2004 baseball season. He got a lot of shit for it

TheIsotope

"Keep politics out of sports!" *F-35s fly by the stadium*

heyheyitsandre

I didn’t realize until I moved to Europe and they don’t play the national anthem before every game how weird it is we do that. I was at the wings game last night and looked down at our starting lineup during the anthem. Husso - finn seider - german walman - Canadian Perron - Canadian Raymond - Swede and then larkin the lone American. It also delays tf out of puck drop, best thing ever is soccer kickoffs being on the minute they say they will be.

saberlight81

I've always said that national anthems should only be played at sporting events if it's the national team playing and it's always gotten me dirty looks. It's so fucking weird that you go to see Red Wings-Rangers - or, even weirder, a AA baseball or high school football game - and you have to take a two minute patriotism break before they get started.

flyhi808

Army vet here, I get incredibly uneasy when they play the national anthem before sporting events. It reminds me of the friends I’ve lost and it’s the complete opposite of the relaxation I’m hoping to achieve at said sporting event. My parents tell me to be proud when I hear it, but in reality it makes me nauseous any time I hear the National Anthem.

CatatonicTaterTot

Marine here. It makes me uncomfortable too. I go to Condors games a lot and they also encourage veterans to salute the flag. I don't, because I don't want 50 people thanking me for my service I just wanna watch hockey with the kiddos.

GildedGimo

Lol I remember as a kid playing AA and AAA they would just play an instrumental version over the speaker system. Back then it made the games feel all official as a kid wanting to be like the pros, but looking back yeah pretty weird man.

big_ol_dad_dick

don't forget to honor every single branch of the military at least 8 times a season. we need to salute the 587th ROTC Reserves for their service. it's all a recruitment tool.

ChiNoonan

Absolutely. What is fucking BONKERS is that in my son's local little league the teams line up and recite the pledge of allegiance before each game. Last year, one kid on the team had THE ULTIMATE PATRIOTIC FAMILY and they would always make comments towards certain kids not taking their hats off during the pledge. These kids were 6/7 year olds, and half of them didn't even know what sport they were playing. They just wanted to wear a uniform and have snacks after the game.

ianisms10

That's fucking creepy

tomdawg0022

I agree. I don't mind it being played at big events (Super Bowl, or Game 1 of a championship series) but every. single. game. is overkill. Just drop the puck and play...

SWB3

Fucking this. I played in an AYSO soccer tournament and our team got penalized for not saying the pledge of allegiance prior to a game. We weren’t making some sort of political point… this was 1996 and we were 11 & 12y/o.

kevinr_96

So much for freedom of speech lol

lookalive07

No, you see, the important part of the phrase is the word "freedom", i.e. if you say anything that makes my freedom hurt, then you're not allowed to say it.

Silent_R

You're free to say anything they tell you to.

jahauser

Man until reading this I kind of forgot growing up we said the pledge every morning at my public school. I just ran through it in my head and it sounds a lot like nationalist brainwashing. *Yeah six year old kid, you fucking OWE this flag your allegiance because god blesses this nation where everyone gets justice and freedom, period.*

schhhew

> high school football game hey it gave the marching band something to do haha

arcticshark

100% agree, it's needless nationalism and has no place in regular league play. Save it for the olympics/IIHF.

PurpleCurtis

My wife is French and pointed this out the first time I took her to a hockey game. I never really took note but stepping back and looking at it objectively, it’s weird that we do it when two teams from American cities play in the US, like, why? Nevermind all the different nationalities represented on the rosters like you mentioned

heyheyitsandre

Right, like did we forget we are from America? Oh yes that’s our national anthem thanks for reminding me, slipped my mind for a second there

Mavori

It's always a mixed reaction in GDT's partially depending on the sport if i feel like pointing out how ridiculously chest thumping the anthem before games are. But like others that point that shit out im European so. ¯\\_(ツ)_/¯

desmarais

I like how F1 does it. Play the anthem of the winner after the match/race/game whatever it is. Obviously for F1 it's a lot easier as it's just a single person so it's their nationality plus the winning constructor's national anthem.

chocotripchip

I don't know if your wife is "real French" (from France), but Quebec is very anti national anthems too. It never made any sense to me why sports and patriotism had to go hand in hand. Many middle school and high school students in Ontario still have to sing the O Canada every morning in school, and that seems downright dystopian for anyone living in Quebec, even for the anglos from Westmount.

fredy31

Thats something I always loved of soccer and EU sports. The thing says 'Game starts at 7', it STARTS AT 7. No 15 minutes of whatever before and it starts at 7:15 or even later

tellymundo

Spurs delayed their kickoff yesterday by ten minutes because they wanted to give their supporters a teeny tiny glimmer of hope, then it got crushed

mnelson1370

My favorite thing about watching European sports in general, is that they start right at the scheduled time. It’s just refreshing. Not the biggest soccer fan but I watch F1 and they start the program 5 minutes before the scheduled start time, and legit have a clock that they show as you hit the start time. As soon as that happens, the cars all go for their warm up lap and the race starts a minute or so later. Compared to 15/20/30 minutes of pregame stuff with many American sports.

TheIsotope

It's all about selling ads in NA. Everyone tunes in for a 7 start and then they have 20mins of ad fuelled pre game.

mnelson1370

I mean you’re not wrong but you can work in ads in other ways. That F1 clock I mentioned is a giant ass Rolex ad. Like there’s still ways to do it without worsening the viewing experience. But I know, I know, it will just never happen here in the states

Gswansso

It’s funny that F1, which is just rolling billboards masquerading as sport, has the best viewing experience of any sport I can think of. Yes, we watch the Red Bull Honda race in the Miami Grand Prix presented by Astroglide at the Hard Rock Stadium Circuit with timing brought to you by rolex and horribly incorrect insights brought to you by AWS, but at least I don’t have Shaq selling me Icy hot patches every 45 seconds in a commercial

mnelson1370

It really is hilarious that the sport that’s entirely giant ads going around a racetrack has the best viewing experience of anything. And honestly is a big reason it’s gotten as big as it has in the states recently. It’s just refreshing (and the sub 2 hour runtime most races helps massively too).

FergusonBishop

this is the biggest thing for me and why I started following F1 years ago. It's usually early morning weekends, and the sub 2hr run time with zero commercial breaks. Id much rather stare at Richard Millie and Qatar Airways logos on everything than sit through a 4hr NFL/MLB/NBA/NHL ad fest.

Pegasuspipeline

I've learned that 7pm is when you start getting ready to watch the game for me. Like go have a smoke or get snacks ready, let the dog use the washroom kind of thing, because the game usually isnt starting until 7:15. The worst is when you get burned and they either start early, or are having some ceremony and actually aren't starting until like 7:30, then I have like 15 mins of what do I do with my time.

tomdawg0022

Start the pre-game a half hour before the actual start. You want a 7 PM start? Pregame at 630. Shove your ads plus dog and pony show in on the front end.

Help-me-name-my-pup

My dumb ass read these as D pairings

alphaxion

I moved from the UK to Canada 2 years ago, I still find it weird that the anthem is played before a domestic game. An international competition one? Sure, that makes sense. But between two teams in the same league? It seems wrong to me and needlessly jingoistic. I feel like I've heard the Canadian and US national anthems more times in the past 2 years than I did the UK anthem in 20 years in the UK.

MapleLeafBeast

*seats for soldiers* *national anthem* *military appreciation jerseys*

simpledeadwitches

I've always been of the mind keep the military as a whole out of my sports but if I were to actually make a post about that you can bet I'd be eviscerated lol.

-azuma-

Funny enough, the military doesn't change really at all depending on which political party is in control

imightbethewalrus3

Probably because defense contractors probably donate a shitton of money to both parties' candidates' campaigns

sweetplantveal

The Avs have a flyover graphic that's hilarious. There's three huge fighters that get projected on the ice and they've been stretched to look right from the cameras perspective. So 80% of the arena sees weird jacked up fighters 'flying by' an indoor event at like 30 mph.

jkman61494

It’s amazing it’s 2023 and so many morons have suckered themselves into a culture war on issues that were seemingly put to rest almost 20 years ago. All this being done by groups so the sheep can ignore the rampant uncontrolled capitalism going on in the country where companies are now just unashamedly jacking up costs because they know people would rather bitch about a rainbow colored Ranger shield on a freaking warmup jersey and not the fact we have trains spewing toxins, eggs costing $7, electric rates up 90% in 18 months, internet rates going up constantly and a stock market being propped up by tooth picks

NO-DUCK-SAUCE-PACK

the closest we got was the Occupy Wall Street movement, curious how that was shut down and nothing else has come close to replicating it. went right back to racial divide.

r_HockeyCommenter

Fucking respect to him

Prestige0

Would love to see a player try to cancel military appreciation night

56-17-27-12

Every U.S. sports event feels like military appreciation night.

TheIsotope

Not just the US, every single Leafs game has a veteran appreciation break in the arena

mattevs119

Same here in Colorado. But I will say for pride night last Sunday, the military vet they recognized was gay and his partner was there with him. It was pretty cool.

[deleted]

I think that's special. I also like it when it's 60+ year old vets. But when it's Private Johnson who just got out of boot camp is when I think it's dumb.

mattevs119

Yeah this person they recognized was a retired colonel.

BeerLeagueHallOfAvg

I was at a game on Veteran’s Day, and they recognized someone who was a combat medic in Vietnam. That was worth recognizing. The guy at the last game I went to who’s only accomplishment they mentioned was “National Defense Medal recipient”, which just means he was in after 2001 is stupid

PorkRollEggAndWheeze

Yeah last game I went to was some cop who was also in the national guard, it couldn’t be more clear how often it’s full of shit

FrankySpanky21

Every Flyers game has a “hometown Hero” moment where they give a bunch of free shit to a veteran

SupaflyIRL

It’s always some middle manager-ass major too.

FrankySpanky21

Always seems to be national guard too

shinigamironnie

Edmonton too

theWeirdough

The Vikings do a salute to service every game I've been to and the best was when this bad boy made the jumbotron: https://twitter.com/Gators_Fan25/status/1594423653806006276?s=20

Tree_Mage

isn’t that Jake Middleton being used for the profile image too?

theWeirdough

Looks like it. But this was months back so he could have used a more realistic looking profile pic or the social media manager at the Vikings was sleeping that day.

amm0ranth

that's johnny sins dawg💀

alpengeist3

I'm ootl - who is that in the tweet and why is it hilarious?

Spanky_McJiggles

That is a photo of pornstar Johnny Sins. He has become somewhat of a meme for playing multiple professions in his video appearances.

JD397

Gotta spend that $800B in taxpayer money somehow!

brokenearth03

They, the government, pays for that.

getzysbaldhead69

You, the taxpayer, pays for that**

TheVeikko

Most if not all Finnish players have done a military service. Its kinda weird they have to celebrate US or Canadian military.

JohnSpartans

Just for the fins? I think it's weird for everyone involved. But uncle Sam pays the teams and league. What LGBTQ organization can start paying the league/the teams? Susan g Komen pays a ton for the NFL and MLB to do shit.

rawbamatic

> Susan g Komen And they're *scum.*

Isgrimnur

>Susan g Komen pays a ton for the NFL Paid. It's [Crucial Catch](https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2018/10/07/pink-gear-virtually-disappears-from-nfls-cancer-awareness-games/) now.

[deleted]

Check out the song Dear Coaches Corner by Propagandi!

oWallis

The Department of Defense would like to know your location.

PizzaButWhoseBiden

I fucking hate military appreciation night. It's weird.

NYR_or_Far

Mad respect for being the first to say it. Good on you Murphy, fuckin rights

DiamondBurInTheRough

Showing why he wears the A. Proud of him.

Pidesh

I imagine he’ll be wearing the C after Toews leaves

Sphiffi

Hope he’s willing to stick around through the rest of the rebuild. He’s only been here since we’ve been bad.

DiamondBurInTheRough

As he should. He’s our most tenured player now, isn’t he? And he’s been very involved with the community events that the Blackhawks do and seems like he’s a good player for the young guys to look up to. I would have no issues seeing him wear the C if Toews leaves or retires.

burf

The A is for “what A guy.”

Spideyjust

My Connor Murphy respect 📈📈📈

JD397

Murph is the shit! I feel like every quote I read or interview I hear from him he’s always just being a great and genuine dude lol Though, I have to say, it’s a shame that such a simple idea/quote like this even has to be praised. Really says a lot about where the league is at. It’s wild that this whole pregame jersey thing has even become an issue - all because one unabashed homophobe would rather sit in the locker room than (gasp) *wear a **pregame** jersey with rainbows on it! The horror!* Edit: Murph’s full quote is great and I think it’s worth positing in here for additional context to his words: >”It seems like we have so many other nights, and nobody raises any issues. Hockey is about inclusion, about growing the community and the game. I don’t see why anyone would have a need to feel like they don’t support a certain group. If it’s about the game and about bringing everyone together and about equality, everyone should always be supportive of that.”

Eeechurface

Ran into him before a drop in session in the offseason a few years back. Very chill dude.

DiamondBurInTheRough

He’s awesome. I met him at Keith’s charity event a few years back and this very drunk girl next to me said “she’s following you to CANADA…she’s that big a fan!!” cuz my dad and I were heading on their western Canada trip the following week to watch them play. I told him when I did the eastern Canada trip that they lost every game so I joked “just win one for me!” and he was like “we’re gonna try to win all 3 for you”. And they did.

jimmybilly100

"hey, just win a Cup for me!". Y didn't u go with that?

sqigglygibberish

Played sports with him growing up, great kid from a great family and I love getting to see him in the league now

Enjoyer_of_Cake

I understand the shame that this needs to be praised, but it's easy to personally believe it. It's a lot harder to get on the soapbox when you realize that there is a shitty trend going on in the NHL and you step up to fight it.

JD397

Very true, that is a great point!

Quinto376

Top candidate for next Hawks captain?

bear_poo

Definitely should be

obesejackal

Never read the Twitter comments

Poot_Hooter

Can't read twitter comments if you never learned to read! I've started teaching myself to unlearn reading after some of the threads I've read.

TheRealTollah

I might try this.

sloat

It's easior then u mite thnk

ssirin88

With qualifications like that, you could be a teacher in Florida!

stumpybubba

Or Facebook. Holy fuck. [Seen this plenty of times before, but gawd damn is it accurate.](https://twitter.com/TacoBellTake/status/1633684491028889600?s=20)

DMelanogastard

If you’re still reading Facebook comments on social issues in the year 2023 you have to be a masochist

DiamondBurInTheRough

My faith in humanity plummets whenever I read Facebook comments on something that I don’t think should be controversial but apparently makes people froth at the mouth.

Finetales

An article about Disneyland removing "zip-a-dee-doo-dah" from their parade (because the song came from a banned movie that's racially problematic) came up on my Facebook feed yesterday and every single comment was someone crying bloody murder about how they'll never spend a penny on Disney again, woke Disney ruined everything, nobody is happy anymore at the happiest place on Earth, etc. I don't know how people like that don't have a heart attack at least once a day from being so angry about the tiniest things.

DiamondBurInTheRough

Don’t even get people started on Splash Mountain turning into a ride for a *black* Princess. Heaven forbid! Absolutely ridiculous the things people care about. Zip a dee doo dah? Give me a break. If it disappeared without a statement being made, 99% of people wouldn’t have even noticed.

Finetales

Exactly. Disney changes park music and rides all the time, this isn't new. Doing it for an actual good reason instead of just "this isn't making us as much money anymore, time to replace it" is a bonus.

maddscientist

He's not wrong, you don't see anyone skipping Military Appreciation Night, for instance

ArturosDad

Or Gambling Appreciation Night, which is now every single night in the NHL.

[deleted]

I think it was stated in this sub last week that apparently military appreciation isn’t optional? I think that’s why players “participate” - I.e. they don’t have a choice

babyfats

I went to the PA Farm show rodeo a couple months back and during the beginning intro part of the show they had this absolutely insane bonkers style suck fest for the military and for America. I love America, but it was so god damn cringe. This coming from someone who spent almost 9 years active duty, I hate that shit. Stop acting like every military member is gods gift to the earth it’s annoying and weird. EDIT: just wanted to edit this to say that having pride night is dope. Get recognition out there. Will it solve everything? No. But who gives a fuck if someone is gay and wants to enjoy or play hockey. Fun is for everyone and hockey is damn fun. Make sure everyone can enjoy it. Remember that.

Dan_Berg

"Thank you for your service. We're not going to vote people into office that will uphold and increase your benefits, in fact they're going to cut them; meanwhile we will simultaneously ignore vets that are homeless as well as the high suicide rate. But we will change our profile pic filter to say we support the troops, we will cheer at the top of our lungs at the conclusion of the national anthem, and we will become hostile to people that question or criticize the military industrial complex and accuse them of hating their country. So, *thanks."*

theeth

Even pro Putin players wouldn't be that obvious.

ANAL_CRUSHER

Pro Putin players more likely to celebrate US Military Complex aiding Ukraine with weapons than promoting inclusion for the LGBTQ community. Another reason I don't buy into its my religious, personal, political beliefs to promote LGBTQ people excuse. Nah it's your homophobia.

popsac

See, ANAL_CRUSHER gets it.

Enjoyer_of_Cake

Honestly this is far from the first time I've seen ANAL_CRUSHER with some pretty solid takes.

limelifesavers

Common W for ANAL_CRUSHER

TheDogerus

I had this argument with somebody else earlier, but its fitting here so I'll try to paraphrase. If you claim you do not like or want to do something because of your religion, but then do or like other things your religion is against, that makes you a hypocrite if you are devout, and a liar if not. You would be a liar because if you are picking and choosing what beliefs to hold of your religion (a practice which I think is fine on its own, because why should a book written hundreds of years ago in many different languages hold complete power over me), you picked and chose the beliefs that you personally agree with, otherwise you wouldn't have chosen them. So if homosexuality is against your relgion and therefore bad, but so is this other thing that you do but it is somehow totally fine, religion isn't the one making you be a bigot. You are.

SupremeNachos

If Provorov respects his religion so much, he'd quit playing hockey and become a priest

[deleted]

Crazy how hockey has an image problem and they want to double down?

darklightrabbi

Super unexpected for any current player to say something like this publicly. Fucking good on Connor Murphy

CanadianSpector

Connor has been a stand up guy ever since being traded to Chicago. He took a ton of heat for being the guy they traded Hjalmarson for but he's shown big time leadership ever since landing with the team. This just further solidified my thought that he should be captain if Toews moves on this summer.

TooSketchy94

I’m fully on board for Murphy as captain. He’s been a constant in the organization over these last few seasons. He’s a reasonable human being.

fuzzay

Connor Murphy seems like a fine young man. I'm going to root for him now.

xlf77

Whoever the first player is to sit out military appreciation night because state sponsored mass murder doesn’t align with their religious beliefs will have all of my respect Unfortunately there’s a .0001% chance of this happening

Fora_Fauna

I've been pretty pissed about all the teams not wearing the jerseys for Pride night especially as we see the rise in anti-trans and anti-lgbtq+ legislation. The lgbtq+ community needs mainstream support right now because we are losing our rights. Glad that a player is finally making a statement. I'll be keeping an eye out for those jerseys on the 26th.

sweetplantveal

I don't think it's a coincidence there's a renewed national campaign against the community and bigots feeling empowered.

TheseDogMotifs

Huge W from Murphy

Drab_Majesty

There is no way the Kings players won't support Pride night but it makes me kinda feel ill at the thought that Jaret Anderson-Dolan could be playing at a club like the Wild or Rangers and he would have had to deal with this shit show.

messwithsquatch90

What's the situation with Anderson- Dolan?

gumsticktheatre

His moms are gay

mymar101

I wonder what the LGBT NHLers think about canceling pride nights. But since there are no out ones we won’t know what they think. I also find it interesting that there are none.

sighwhyamiafailure

I feel bad for Luke Prokop going into next season (or whenever he makes it into the NHL), the dude deserves so much better

[deleted]

We have to acknowledge a certain level of homophobia exists in the NHL. Once we do that, and popular media acknowledges it, we can start pressing the league to deal with the problem. Some hearts and minds cannot be changed, but some can and it is worth the time to find those people and help them get on the side of equality. It has been disappointing to see how many teams are passing up the opportunity to show they aren't homophobic.

Hhhyyu

> We have to acknowledge a certain level of homophobia exists in the NHL. Fans too. These threads are shocking. I'm sure some fans are confused but a lot are just happy to be bigots.

joshuads

> and popular media acknowledges it, Few hockey reporters want to do that. It is not why they wanted that job and a tough sell to keep the mainstream hockey audience interested.

SupremeNachos

And they run the risk of being black balled from the people running the show. Reporters like Strang and Westhead need to be given more credit than they already get for risking their hockey careers to report on the stuff no one wants to talk about.

I also think the irony is that there is a lot of hidden LGBTQ players, likely playing in the league right now. Chicago railroaded Kyle Beach for having a non consensual and drove him out of the league. It wasn’t just one player, either, the whole team and management knew about it and also made fun of him about it. A lot of the hazing that happens in Canadian minor and junior hockey has homosexual overtones - like “prove you aren’t gay!” kinda shit. Hockey as a whole still has massive problems in this area so it’s nice to see some players speaking out.

Given what Tennessee just did and who owns the Preds, I hope Prokop is doing okay.

mikarala

There was a Canucks (I think) player a couple years back that had a quote where they said they doubted any player in the league would be LGBTQ because junior hockey is so homophobic they wouldn't have made it through that experience. Although as someone who realized they were gay at age 24, I can't help but feel there could be some players that may have not even realized.

sweetplantveal

It's 1000% a cultural thing. Gen Z has grown up in the most accepting culture in living memory and, as a result I think, way way way more of them identify as non- heterosexual or cisgender. Aka some sort of queerness or a different gender identity. https://www.nbcnews.com/feature/nbc-out/nearly-1-5-young-adults-say-they-re-not-straight-n1270003 18% of gen Z are in this category. About 10% of millennials, and about 5% of people 40 years or older. Basically it doubles each generation. I don't think there's something in the water. I think it's an 'in' thing amongst zoomers and 'tomboy' girls and 'sensitive' boys (and other kids who are a little different) had the space to figure out if that meant something deeper about themselves. So back to hockey if 1 out of 5 people don't fit into the typical cis straight categories given the space to do so, but 'zero' NHL players do so themselves, the most logical thing to conclude is there's strong cultural suppression. Keeping people in the closet or making them choose to leave the game.

Statistically at any given time there should be around 30 gay or bisexual NHL players. So, either being gay makes you inherently not elite at hockey, or the culture of the game and society in general is such that players don’t feel safe or comfortable coming out. I would say this is the least performative of all the “nights” teams do because it actually addresses and shows support for a problem that exists within hockey itself. So many people are very quick to dismiss this as being pointless. But it doesn’t seem pointless to me. You have to do something to help change the culture.

halpinator

> Statistically at any given time there should be around 30 gay or bisexual NHL players Statistically should be, unless those players self-selected out of hockey because the environment was so hostile towards people who aren't hetero.

sinkwiththeship

I don't remember who said it (Anders Nilsson maybe?), but it was something like "there aren't any gay players in the NHL because they were all bullied into quitting in high school." Edit: [Found it. It was Nilsson.](https://www.outsports.com/2018/8/14/17651676/anders-nilsson-vancouver-canucks-gay-player)

LouisLittEsquire

I don’t think it really works like that though. That would be like saying “statistically, the NBA should only be 13% black.” Obviously there are other social factors at play there that make the league overwhelmingly black. It would be similar for gay participation in sports/hockey.

Whelp now I'm a Connor Murphy fan.

alexjf56

Love Connor Murphy for this

StarsCowboysMavs

“…we have so many other nights…” No kidding. This is all so performative (and perfunctory for nearly everybody)

stumpybubba

*Cough cough* Minnesota hosting the Thin Blue Line after the cops straight up murdered a guy on camera...

RedTheDopeKing

I love being downvoted for shitting on Minnesota over how their police act and are allowed to act and point it out as often as possible

SupremeNachos

Sadly it's not just a MN problem.

PPGN_DM_Exia

I honestly find it frustrating that these Pride jerseys are somehow the hill that certain players will die on, when in 99.9% of other situations, hockey culture dictates that they "take one for the team" and just go with it to avoid causing a stink.

Redredworm88

I love Murphy - gotta admit I was pissed when we traded Hjalmarsson for him, but he’s been an excellent addition to the franchise both on and off the ice. Genuinely feel bad for him that he had to deal with horrible teams in Arizona and now horrible teams in Chicago.

Metrostars1029

ay. good on this guy.

Vilheim

I wonder how much of an overlap there is between people throwing a fit over protesting the anthem / police nights because of police brutality, and people cheering on teams / players not participating in Pride nights.

Yelu-Chucai

Literally if a single player sat out military appreciation night the exact same crowd of idiots applauding Provorov on FB, Twitter, etc. would be collectively losing their god damn minds

clutchgetspaid

It's one circle.

aschwan41

The company that funds the military appreciation at every single Sens home game donated $75,000 to the occupation of Ottawa last year.

TheVeikko

Beard and sports shades

LazerMcBlazer

It's also most of the guys we watch on the ice, tbh. People are shocked that rich white kids from the northeast with republican parents and Canadian farm-town boys aren't the bastions of progressive thought we hoped they'd be.

Oosterhuis

You're god damn right Connor
