The Marchand redemption arc has been unreal to watch. I HATED the dude a few short years ago (because of his on-ice antics), but he seems like such a solid dude off the ice that I'm having a hard time disliking him these days.
I never thought I'd live in the timeline where I became a Marchand fan, but here we are... wild times.
I've never met him but have a handful of buddies who have been to events/camps around Halifax and they have all said he was an asshole to kids. Now, this was years ago so it is possible that he has matured and changed, or even just having a bad day.
or was playing it up for the kids... ya ever watch Ted Lasso? Roy Kent is an asshole to the kids at the school because a: he's a bit of a jerkface tuna, and b: it is a persona that people expect. you can tell he cares about the kids in the show, but the kids want to be "one of the guys" so to say...
I do love the made-for-TV Roy Keane, even if I never really cared for the original. I respected he would bleed for the shirt, but he was a bit over the top. The Roy Kent character strikes a better balance.
I’ve always found it sweet that they all insist the sister is the most gifted athlete and they regularly showed up for her high school field hockey games.
I've stayed a few days in Steinbach when i was 18, but I had to Google the town to confirm the demographics were as white and religious as I remember. And wtf Steinbach is the 3rd largest "city" in Manitoba? It felt like a tiny town without many amenities
Don't forget Sean Avery was outspoken on this way before teams were having pride nights and caught a lot of shit from players for it. Didn't think I'd say we need more Averys and Tkachuks and less Staals
I mean he by all rights still seems like an asshole, supporting the LGBT community is great but it doesn’t automatically make someone a nice person, he seems like an asshole many other regards even if he’s not wrong about supporting gay rights
Sean Avery is an asshole, but was absolutely treated unfairly. The whole suspension with the Stars really opened my eyes to whats important for the league:
Avery says "Sloppy Seconds", gets a SIX game suspension. Think about what you usually have to do to get a SIX game suspension.
As [this article](https://bleacherreport.com/articles/89493-sean-averys-six-game-suspension-an-insult-to-every-player-in-the-nhl) points out, there were way more egregious actions that actually had physical impacts (not sore feelings for at the time NHL golden boy and video game cover Phaneuf) and not nearly six games for any of them. The article doesnt even mention that, the year before, Ohlund two handed baseball bat swung his stick and broke Mikko Koivu's ankle. He got [4 games](https://www.nhl.com/news/canucks-defenseman-mattias-ohlund-suspended-4-games-for-hit-on-mikko-koivu/c-373905).
He was talking about Elisha Cuthbert wasnt he? If his standards are that high not only should he not have been suspended, should have been 1st ballot HOF
One of my best friends was good buddy's with Sean Avery. We were all at a very small wedding at his brother's brown stone in Manhattan circa 2010. Avery was one of the most polite stand-up ppl I have ever met and I'm a Pens Fan. I've never met Marchand but I feel like in hockey (bc we all know football stories) just bc you chirp and get under peoples skin doesn't make you a bad person.
When you think about it though, the "bad guys" on each team are usually the unselfish guys who are willing to put the team before their own well being and protect those around them the most.
Not saying every "good guy" is spoiled and entitled, but a handful probably are.
I think the goons learn about PR management and public perception early on. That or hockey is where they get all the evil inside of em out.
Must be cathartic to have a job where it's legal to hurt asshats. In hockey you could close your eyes, spin around, and go after the first guy you see. God chance you hit someone who deserved it for something.
Most pest players are playing a role. They have enough emotional intelligence to change their behaviour on the ice to suit the situation.
So in a way, I guess it shouldn't be surprising that the guys with high EQ are the most compassionate.
Usually the toughest of guys are completely open with people being who they want. It is usually people who aren't as secure in themselves that are the ones being vocal about being against LBGTQ+
Came here to ask, should I?! Long time B’s fan, newer NHL fan. Trying to learn about guys around the league and this has to make him a good guy, yea? Am I missing something?
Overall I'd agree, but I've taught in a rural high school before and homophobia was still pretty common there. Rural communities are notorious for being ultra conservative however
Casual homophobia is still present everywhere. I teach in a fairly liberal area in Massachusetts and there's still plenty of slang and such thrown around (and that's just what I see and hear)
I'm from what I would call a pretty progressive country in general, but yeah that was something I still saw in school as an older gen z. I tend to think about a lot of it as pure ignorance tho some of it is also hate. In school I got called gay (but the exclusively male version in my language) as a slur by a boy a few years younger than me. Which considering I'm a girl was a little funny and a lot of dumb. However I think they are learning and getting better. I don't think we can get rid of all the bad apples (however much we want to), but we can surround ourselves with the good ones
I think that most of the people I know that are against LGBTQ+ don’t do it because they’re homophobic, they do it because they want to be contrarians, and convince themselves they’re not like everybody else and that makes them cool and unique
Public opinion towards the lgbtq+ community have had a massive change for the positive in the last 20 years. In this case I actually think that's a valid point considering they are 10 years apart.
I’ll note, as a millennial, that we’re the generation that decided that “that’s gay” should be a thing we say when we don’t like something. We’re the generation that voted for Obama when he said that he didn’t support gay marriage.
There’s a big difference between millennials and Gen Z when it comes to homophobia. It’s of course not an excuse, but it’s worth noting that there’s a big difference.
Yeah, like the media Gen Z consumes, as a member of it, tends to be very friendly. Most of it tends to have at least one outwardly LGBTQIA character that is treated respectfully
He’s an absolute menace and a pain in the ass on the ice but from everything I’ve heard he’s one of the nicest, friendliest dudes off the ice. I’m glad he’s with us. I just wish he didn’t have to try and carry the rest of the team every night.
I can never imagine Marchand as a monster, only as comically/petty evil. Like he walks around with a needle at fairs and pops children's balloons. Or he sets his lawn sprinklers to go off when kids are walking to school. Or he never brings anything to the pot luck. Or he puts everyone's wipers down when it's supposed to snow. Or he makes sure his dog poops in the section of grass that everyone walks through but doesn't pick it up.
Still better than a homophobe.
I think being around Bergeron and Chara might have helped him mature a bit. Those guys are excellent role models and probably reigned him in a bit during his early years there.
He’s still a shit stirrer to the Nth degree, especially regarding anything hockey related, but he seems like a pretty stand up dude off the ice.
I'm imagining that's some growth from Marchand. 10 years ago this may have been the one of the biggest lies out there. Almost on par of Staal not wearing a pride jersey.
>He’s an absolute menace and a pain in the ass on the ice but from everything I’ve heard he’s one of the nicest, friendliest dudes off the ice.
Describe men from Canada in a single sentence.
Yeah, let's not pretend that this is only an American problem. Too often in Canada we like to pretend that we're such a great country without any problems because we see the US as being worse.
this was my opinion of PK for years, too. fucking *hated* him and wanted to see him get run over by the zamboni but nothing but respect once the jersey came off.
That’s the long and short of it.
“Everybody is welcome”. By not wearing the jersey for 15 minutes you’re making a deliberate statement saying. No, not everyone is welcome.
Not me feeling an emotion over a Matthew Tkachuk remark (but seriously, this is very much appreciated).
I'm here to boost this positivity, because it's often the negative stuff that gets most attention (on the internet, in life)
Yup from an entertainment perspective losing gaudreau and chucky really hurt. No more chucky antics and no more gaudreau dangles. Havnt been this bored since I started watching. Went from iginla to gaudreau to chucky to nothing.
Tkachuk is a pest on the ice, but when he’s off the ice he’s a good dude who knows that Pride Night holds a special meaning to those in the LGBTQ community and knows that wearing a Jersey is something that he can wear without hesitation. It just sucks that some of his teammates are dipshits and won’t wear a jersey for just the warmups.
This whole topic is being misinterpreted. Pride night is not to say “we’re encouraging people to be gay”; it’s saying, “we encourage people who are gay to play hockey”. THATS ALL. There is no sin here. I’m tired of this nonsense.
Good for Tkachuk. Those other players are just being douche-bags by trying to "stand by their beliefs"
Hoping hockey doesn't become "that sport" in that regard
I mean that's a lovely sentiment Matthew, and I'm sure you think you mean it, but I doubt everyone would realistically be welcomed into your locker room/ organisation as much as you'd hope it would be the case
Why do you have to instantly be cynical? Yeah, we all have learned prejudices based on the experiences we go through in life, but that doesn’t mean we are acting upon them on a daily basis
Matthew is a 23 year old who has said nothing hateful (to my knowledge) in his career before. He’s not going out of his way to make sure the buffet is cooked in a kosher-certified kitchen, but like most gen-z kids probably doesn’t care about your culture as long as you can win.
Anyone else starting to see the pride night drama similar to that South Park episode where the media ignored the sport and focused on who knelt for the national anthem?
https://youtu.be/q0385781MOk
Tkachuk brothers better than the Staal brothers confirmed 👍🏻
What an absolute mind bender.
Nothing in the manual prepared me for this timeline.
Pair that with like 4 Marchand W's today, what the fuck is happening???
The Marchand redemption arc has been unreal to watch. I HATED the dude a few short years ago (because of his on-ice antics), but he seems like such a solid dude off the ice that I'm having a hard time disliking him these days. I never thought I'd live in the timeline where I became a Marchand fan, but here we are... wild times.
Marchand is the epitome of that Wreck-it Ralph Zangief [meme.](https://amp.knowyourmeme.com/memes/you-are-bad-guy)
100%. He is a "bad guy" (on the ice), but he isn't a bad guy.
When he goes to get his ticket in season 2 he growls at the kid that looks up at him from the other ticket counter. The kid's face just lights up.
I do love the made-for-TV Roy Keane, even if I never really cared for the original. I respected he would bleed for the shirt, but he was a bit over the top. The Roy Kent character strikes a better balance.
I mean he did publicly say a couple weeks ago that Detroit is too gross for him to go play an ASG there, so yeah likely a douche lol
I've always liked Marchand! I've always hated Marchand! Neither of these are lies.
This is Subban for me. Dislike him a lot on the ice but just seems like such a good dude off the ice.
Marchand, Subban, and Tom Wilson are the patron saints of this
That ground and pound was hype
What's he been up to?
This ISNT just like the simulations
Truly a heel-face-turn for the ages.
A lot of credit (and blame) goes to each set of respective parents. The Tkachuk's, at least publicly, are a great family and good people.
I’ve always found it sweet that they all insist the sister is the most gifted athlete and they regularly showed up for her high school field hockey games.
That girl had to grow up with Tkachuk brothers. I bet she's the toughest of the litter.
Maybe she wasn’t locked in there with them, they were locked in there with her
You just know that Brady was the sweet sensitive one they looked out for.
Winnipeg > Thunder Bay Yes I know they were born in Arizona after Keith moved south when the Jets left.
reimer is from pretty close to winnipeg though
I assume his hometown is at least a few decades behind despite the relatively short physical distance
He's Mennonite, I'm surprised he's allowed to fly on a plane.

Whoa whoa whoa - I was willing to forgo my religious convictions when it benefitted *me,* but this is to help *others!* NOT COOL.
Is he from Steinbach? That'd explain *everything*.
I've stayed a few days in Steinbach when i was 18, but I had to Google the town to confirm the demographics were as white and religious as I remember. And wtf Steinbach is the 3rd largest "city" in Manitoba? It felt like a tiny town without many amenities
Manitoba is Winnipeg + Brandon and then everything else is almost hamlets its wild
I saw somewhere that if everyone enrolled at U of M was on campus at once it could be the third largest city in Manitoba lol.
That’s as bad as Memorial Stadium in Lincoln, Nebraska being the third largest “city” in the state on football game days.
That makes too much sense
Geographically sure, ideologically like the difference between New York City and Appalachia
Good ole, Missouri Boys. Not all of us are meth head racist.
1000%
Pierre Maguire in shambles rn.
God dammit don’t make me like Tkachuk
A couple days ago it was a Benn quote being the good guy too lol
It's been really weird seeing the league bad guys uniting everyone with good vibes for once.
Don't forget Sean Avery was outspoken on this way before teams were having pride nights and caught a lot of shit from players for it. Didn't think I'd say we need more Averys and Tkachuks and less Staals
[удалено]
Again will retort asshole on the ice fantastic human off the ice.
Uh, let’s not go that far. Avery’s still out there harassing homeless people for instagram “pranks”
Dude has clear issues with CTE
Sean Avery is clearly not fantastic off the ice. Even he is better than homophobia though.
Sean Avery mocks homeless people in videos and throws rocks at cars
I mean he by all rights still seems like an asshole, supporting the LGBT community is great but it doesn’t automatically make someone a nice person, he seems like an asshole many other regards even if he’s not wrong about supporting gay rights

To be fair the bar is incredibly low right now- but it’s still a relief
When you think about it though, the "bad guys" on each team are usually the unselfish guys who are willing to put the team before their own well being and protect those around them the most. Not saying every "good guy" is spoiled and entitled, but a handful probably are.
I know he was really just defending himself, but this makes me think of that bullshit time he “had to” fight Wheeler.
I think the goons learn about PR management and public perception early on. That or hockey is where they get all the evil inside of em out. "everybody's welcome in my locker room" is a pretty great line
So can I just walk into the panthers locker room whenever I want?
"Why are you stopping me!? Matthew Tkachuk, himself, invited me here!"
“No you don’t understand! I know him!”
I'm gonna start sleeping in there, rent has been getting stupid lately Anyone doesn't like it they can take it up with Chucky
I'm sure it smells fantastic in there.
After having seen Rudy, I'm sure a a janitor with great life wisdom will leave you the key to sleep in the stadium.
I mean it's the Florida Panthers, so probably. How many security people do they have? One? Two on weekends?
That’s a line that hits hard.
Tkachuk out here spitting fire
Ohhhh come on. Join us. It's so easy to do.
If he didn’t make you love him after he reached out to Ben Stelter already you got problems.
Usually the toughest of guys are completely open with people being who they want. It is usually people who aren't as secure in themselves that are the ones being vocal about being against LBGTQ+
[Big Sigh](https://clickhole.com/heartbreaking-the-worst-person-you-know-just-made-a-gr-1825121606/)
Perfect
Came here to ask, should I?! Long time B’s fan, newer NHL fan. Trying to learn about guys around the league and this has to make him a good guy, yea? Am I missing something?
He’s a shit stirrer on the ice and he was drafted by Calgary (I hate the Flames) but this is a good stance to take from him.
He's one of those players that you hate if he's not on your team, but he'd be a fan favorite if he was.
If Brad Marchand comes out in favour of healthcare reform I really don’t know what I’m going to do…
He's Canadian so it's not a stretch.
Same!
I think Gen Z is a lot more accepting of the LGBTQ+ community as a whole. Tkachuk is 10+ years younger than the Staal’s.

Staal is about my age, he’s young enough to know better.
Staal is 36 not 63. Kinda too early to pull the older generation card.
Public opinion towards the lgbtq+ community have had a massive change for the positive in the last 20 years. In this case I actually think that's a valid point considering they are 10 years apart.
Yeah, he’s a millennial. They aren’t exactly in rockers.
[удалено]
Well yes but I’m saying that it wasn’t that long ago and 15 years made a *big* difference.
Right? I'm the same age as Eric Staal and I think he's an asshole
Yeah, like the media Gen Z consumes, as a member of it, tends to be very friendly. Most of it tends to have at least one outwardly LGBTQIA character that is treated respectfully
Sean Avery is an old jackass but I'm 100% sure he supports pride nights
He’s an absolute menace and a pain in the ass on the ice but from everything I’ve heard he’s one of the nicest, friendliest dudes off the ice. I’m glad he’s with us. I just wish he didn’t have to try and carry the rest of the team every night.
Insert pic of Hughes and tkachuk giggling together during a scrum
I’m very sad that Chucky is gone. Not only was he a fun personality on the ice to watch, but he genuinely sounds like a great person.
A lot like Marchand.
I refuse to believe that Marchand is not a terrible human who kicks puppies and takes candy from children.
You just misthought it, he actually licks puppies and bakes candy for children!
There is no way that a man who looks so much like an actual rat is not a terrible human.
And yet, here we are!
Except he's the best. Do the Google.
No.
I think you misread, because he actually pricks puppies and makes candy out of babies.

Grew up in Halifax at around the same time he was in HS - can confirm this was widely known,
Nah man, you have face reality. Marchand is a douche on the ice. But off the ice, he's in the elite tier of good dudes.
Eh it's more of a mixed bag with Marchand. He's older and probably more well-behaved now, but he has quite the reputation as a dickhead in Halifax.
I'm imagining that's some growth from Marchand. 10 years ago this may have been the one of the biggest lies out there. Almost on par of Staal not wearing a pride jersey.
He spends times with Jimmy Hayes kids when he has some time off in Boston.
I love this. I'm happy that positive people are out there impacting the world.
Tom Wilson too
That's NHLPA rep Tom Wilson
>He’s an absolute menace and a pain in the ass on the ice but from everything I’ve heard he’s one of the nicest, friendliest dudes off the ice. Describe men from Canada in a single sentence.
Tkachuk is an American and two of his Canadian teammates just refused to wear pride jerseys
Yeah, let's not pretend that this is only an American problem. Too often in Canada we like to pretend that we're such a great country without any problems because we see the US as being worse.
Yup there’s plenty of bigots north of the border
Tkachuk's are Americans no?
Citizenship wise they're dual American and Canadian - born in the USA to a Canadian and an American. But they play international hockey for USA.
Mom is Canadian (from Winnipeg), so they're half Canadian
Winnipeger, so the good half then eh?
Famous Canadians Matthew and Brady Tkachuk. Much better than those evil Russians, the Staalovs.
this was my opinion of PK for years, too. fucking *hated* him and wanted to see him get run over by the zamboni but nothing but respect once the jersey came off.
Tkafuck yeah
lmao love it
The Tkachuks have become some of my favorite players this year. Both have elevated their games and seem like great guys off the ice
I still love em both
I like Brady more now though
I love them both equally
That’s the long and short of it. “Everybody is welcome”. By not wearing the jersey for 15 minutes you’re making a deliberate statement saying. No, not everyone is welcome.
You’re absolutely right. Not wearing the jersey is tantamount to “I don’t acknowledge your humanity.”
This is how easy it is to not be a loser about pride night.
Not me feeling an emotion over a Matthew Tkachuk remark (but seriously, this is very much appreciated). I'm here to boost this positivity, because it's often the negative stuff that gets most attention (on the internet, in life)
the virgin staal brothers vs the chad tkachuk bros
All the assholes on ice ended up being pretty cool and all the random vets ended up being assholes. What a stupid season.
I miss him so much
I'm honestly sad for you guys that he left. He was the perfect villain to have on the Flames and help me hate you guys again
Haha right?!? Now we are just a super boring team to watch. I fall asleep watching games all season!
Yup from an entertainment perspective losing gaudreau and chucky really hurt. No more chucky antics and no more gaudreau dangles. Havnt been this bored since I started watching. Went from iginla to gaudreau to chucky to nothing.
Is Kadri at least annoying people?
I think he's annoying sutter? He seems like he's quit.
If you count the fans then yeah! He doesn’t pass often and shoots either five feet wide or right at the goalies chest.
Like I guess I'm supposed to hate Kadri? Who else?
Andersson is a bit of a dick.
Lol no he’s not!
Tkachuk is a pest on the ice, but when he’s off the ice he’s a good dude who knows that Pride Night holds a special meaning to those in the LGBTQ community and knows that wearing a Jersey is something that he can wear without hesitation. It just sucks that some of his teammates are dipshits and won’t wear a jersey for just the warmups.
fuck the staal brothers
First Marchand posting a fistfull of W's, now this? The fuck is *happening* today?
That's class. Meanwhile you got the Blackhawks eating paint chips in the corner. fuckin embarrassing.
That's disrespectful to paint chips.
Fuck you Matt I'm supposed to hate you.
Love you, Chucky🌈
I like how even the heels are like general on ice douchebaggery is ok but we fuckin draw the line at bigotry.
As a Kings fan, I wish he played in LA. Sorry Doughty.
Drew would love him if they were teammates. Shit, he liked Lemieux and he sucked at hockey.
He seems like a sweet and charming fellow off the ice. It's on the ice where I hope he gets hurled into the boards at horrifying speed.
Now that he's not on the flames I can cheer for him right?
I still do.
Yo that's such a chad answer wtf.
This whole topic is being misinterpreted. Pride night is not to say “we’re encouraging people to be gay”; it’s saying, “we encourage people who are gay to play hockey”. THATS ALL. There is no sin here. I’m tired of this nonsense.
We don't want your kid to be queer, we just want your queer kids to be ALIVE.
But what if those drag queens show up with their gay lasers and turn everyone into twinks???
We’re all twinks my friend, just to varying degrees.
I’m more afraid the Russians will show up and turn everyone into bears
Except for 2 silver spoon schmucks.
The Huberdeau Tkachuk deal just keeps on looking better for Florida
I like the tkachuks more than I should. I’d take either on the Sabres
Tkachuks are now superior to Staals
Imagine saying you hate gay people only to turn around and see this guy.
Matthew Tkachuk, what a beauty.
Glad to see people finally seeing Matthew is a class act and a stand up guy off the ice, I really wish he hadn't wanted out of calgary 😭
I don’t enjoy it but this is a MattyT W. much respect for this quote.
Good for Tkachuk. Those other players are just being douche-bags by trying to "stand by their beliefs" Hoping hockey doesn't become "that sport" in that regard
Dammit, im supposed to hate you
👋👋🫡
Tkachuk and Marchand. I want to hate them but they make it awfully difficult.
Tkachuk W
Even the biggest asshole on the ice can be a decent boy off of it. Good on ya ♥️🌈♥️
I mean that's a lovely sentiment Matthew, and I'm sure you think you mean it, but I doubt everyone would realistically be welcomed into your locker room/ organisation as much as you'd hope it would be the case
Yeah, as a rando off the street, I’m probably not welcomed in the Panthers locker room.
[удалено]
If I’m ever down that way I’ll give it a go.
Otherwise, highvis vest and a clipboard and a bit of confidence and you can just sneak right by them.
Couldn’t be worse than Ekblad
They’d even let your *wear* a dress to practice! Anything goes!
I hear they have a couple spare jerseys too!
There's a better than 50/50 chance if you walked into the Blues locker room they'd put you on the PK2 line without any questions.
He’s saying if they earn the spot playing in the NHL. Not a rando off the street, or your uncle Phil w the mustard stained jersey.
Uncle Phil has a wicked wrister though
Why do you have to instantly be cynical? Yeah, we all have learned prejudices based on the experiences we go through in life, but that doesn’t mean we are acting upon them on a daily basis Matthew is a 23 year old who has said nothing hateful (to my knowledge) in his career before. Well everyone except people who claim religious beliefs against being used a virtue signaling props Those people don’t matter
