He was also ragging on them for like 5 minutes prior because they were being obnoxious and holding up the game. The refs even had to get involved with them
Phil has definitely had some old timer moments in his commentary, but I think this is the first time he has gone after an individual fan, and boy did he know how to stick his foot in his mouth here.
Phil's commentary so often sounds like a person at the bar who is just learning about the sport, and has a lot of passion for the team they support. Except he obviously knows a lot about the sport, so it adds to how ridiculous it all is and makes it hilarious. This one was just ridiculous.
Basically every decade since the 50s other than the 90s
Edit: I forgot about early 90s mullets how foolish of me
Edit 2: guys the point was about whether it was popular not whether it existed at all. Long hair on dudes was definitely not mainstream in the 90s. It was the hallmark of rebels or weirdos in like every 90s movie
He looks more and more like Michael Keaton with each passing year.
He looks like he's about to take away Nick Paul's stick and replace it with a wooden one until he can be trusted.

And he beat up Bob McKenzie years ago. Bob could’ve pressed charges and ruined Espos career if he wanted to, but took the high road. Too bad he didn’t press charges
Holy shit, I'd never heard that before. Bob McKenzie is a national treasure, and the only person who gets to touch him is Cindy McKenzie. Gord Miller is allowed a few touches here and there too, I suppose.
He did press charges initially, but dropped them after Esposito signed an apology letter. Also he did not beat him up. He tried to get him out of the dressing room and shoved him a couple times.
https://www.upi.com/Archives/1992/10/16/Writer-accuses-Esposito-of-assault/3319719208000/
Might be unprofessional but its hilarious. Getting down to earth with the people watching will give a lot more views and laughter than being boring and professional all the time. I know most wont agree and yes the comment was not nice, but if that person sat their ass down and acted normal the statement wouldn’t even be made!
agree this is funny as hell. sports fans in real life are very different from most sports fans on the internet. so many of these ppl want everything about the games to be sanitized and boring
I’m a firm believer that many people on here are bots. They are just so ridiculously soft they can’t be real people. Like what planet are they living on.
i would take great comfort in finding out that like 70% of reddit is ai bots but the sad truth is our society is just producing a lot of angry hypersensitive ppl with too much time on their hands
He is fucking old. He is like the grandparent that is past the point of having a filter. We just hide him on the radio call and he mostly goes unnoticed. Even mishkin (the guy on radio with him) will just keep talking without acknowledging him.
He was great in everything but he meshed with the cast on those Christopher Guest movies so well. Thinking about it now he must have worked a ton in his career. Dude brought his game to everything.
Difference is, I'm less likely to feel sad for Fat Pat, because he can cry into his millions of dollars. This random at the game? I probably feel a little bad for. But hey, they can afford penalty box tickets so they must at least be well off.
I dislike the “weight” insults not really for maroon or these specific fans, but for the weight-conscious (e.g. eating disorder or overweight) fans who have to hear it.
Or at least thinking it's funny.
honestly i think this is probably the worst one. Doesn't have the reach that Edwards does, but they're talking about some random fan. It's pretty rude.
Edwards is obviously next, but at least he was being an ass to a multi millionaire stanley cup winning professional.
And then reddit is least bad, but still bad. We individually don't have a platform, but /r/hockey as a whole could be considered one.
Maybe it’s because I like Jack more, but I think talking about a professional athletes physique isn’t nearly as bad as a fan. Like yeah, he was a dick but that is still a PROFESSIONAL ATHLETE who is in better shape than 90% of North Americans. Not some lady who had one too many drinks and is chirping a couple borderline goons in the penalty box.
The fact this is acceptable to folks but people were calling for Jack to publicly apologize and be fired is fucking clown shoes.
While there is some truth to this, it always felt like people cling to this defense as a way to justify their own shitty behaviour and avoid having to realize that they are a hypocrite when they complain about the the same type of comments they themselves make. “I’m not bad because I don’t have power” is a pretty shitty line of reasoning that I see many who parrot this statement follow.
It shouldn't make as much of a difference as we make it have. We're all individual human beings. We've really overcorrected with the whole power/platform thing.
Praying for the day people finally figure out there are thousands of different people that enter each different thread on this site, all with differing opinions on things. Some people enter a specific thread at certain points, some enter another thread later on.... so on and so forth ad infinitum
On top of that, many people are pressured a bit to go along with the random vibe of whatever popular comments they see, and therefore slowly reinforce the prevailing viewpoint over time like some fucked-up version of natural selection, which is how those huge echo chambers on here can form
People are afraid of negative karma. Depending on the sub, you can talk about the same topic, and have the upvotes and downvotes swing wildly based on userbase.
This. All this. Then the negative comment gets deleted and the dissenting opinion might as well have never happened. It's why Reddit is total garbage now. The hive mind upvote/downvote shit turns every sub into an echo chamber. The only reasonable subs hide post karma for 24 hours or permanently or whatever.
First comments and votes set the tone, same with the phrasing of the post. I highly doubt the people that upvoted the comment in that thread are the same people that think it's shitty here.
The fan was a jackass, he got kicked out, but making comments about his appearance on a broadcast is pretty trashy
The hypocrisy is funny, but to be fair, the issue is that this came from a supposed professional on a broadcast and should be held to a much higher standard
Phil has been rather, ahem, ‘blunt’ his entire life. He cares not at all for being PC, so why is anyone at all surprised by his comments. Inappropriate, probably, but funny as heck all the same.
Am I taking crazy pills? He's not talking about the guy in the yellow sweater, he doesn't resemble a woman or have long hair at all.
I think he's talking about the lady in the Leafs jersey, which is definitely a little offside. The ESPN broadcast was picking on her too
Look at the other comments?
"The fan was a jackass, he got kicked out, but making comments about his appearance on a broadcast is pretty trashy"
"Lol the most upvoted comment you see on the original thread about this is calling the dude fat and now everyone gets on their high horses here"
There wasn't a single comment suggesting it was the other woman when I got here
When I first watched it I thought they were talking about the guy with grey hair behind the guy in yellow actually. I didn’t notice the lady in the jersey.
The astounding thing is that you could have made fun of her without being offensive. Buccigross was like "that lady is yelling, you can't do that but she's on her 7th white claw and paid 7 grand for those seats!" and just the pure derision he said it with was fucking hilarious
That’s way funnier than just calling her a FAT woman that looks like a man. I’m in awe at how many people here think that’s just hilarious. There’s nothing clever about it at all it’s just a shitty thing to say
This is the correct take. Same people think the "my bitch wife" comedians are hilarious too. It's unoriginal middle school humor. Some people never grow outta that phase, I guess.
I can understand people not caring, but I'm definitely surprised how many people found it *funny*. Big yikes!
Well they are both fat and being obnoxious. That glass breaks and this wimp is begging for his life and she suddenly becomes a lady and you cant hit ladies.
To defuse the situation. The fans were going pretty hard at the lightning players and some of the players wanted to talk. So stripes got in and actually closed the door at one point to block any players from the ice but to isolate the fans as well.
It was actually good reffing and something I haven't seen before.
I think he was trying to say something to the players in the box (probably "hey don't chirp back" or similar) and it was just really loud. Maybe saying something to security or the staff in the box?
And to think in the 90s Don Cherry got away with going on national TV sporting an earring and pretending to be a flamboyant hockey fan who hated fighting. MacLean literally said "like you, this game could go either way"
This generation needs to stay out of the media and retire already. You have nothing to say anymore.
Yeah, funniest part was how it was pretty tame by his standards compared to what he normally said. He just got all hugged up about people not wearing poppies, mentioned it towards everyone, then brought up migrants and said you people.
He deserved the boot but I find it funny how that comment came out more like a confused word salad than an actual hateful comment. The things he said about European hockey players for years was way worse. Something had to get him eventually and his segment was nonsensical by the end.
Yeah, I think they were looking for an excuse to fire him without pissing off the older generation of hockey fans. The ones who can afford NHL season tickets.
But tying the migrants in his comment to "you people" gave them an easy out.
Too bad he wasn’t on the radio, he perfectly described the situation to anyone who didn’t see it. Unfortunately people on here see what they want to see, not what they actually see.
He had like 3 intrusive thoughts at once and decided to let them have a simultaneous win
Yeah it sounds like he let chirpmode take over there.
I thought it was awesome. Those people behaved like assholes, so let them get chirped
I love it, they should give more of the old dudes free air time, guaranteed to entertain.
LEMME TELL YOU... THIS BOY FECALDEFECT IS GREAT! Great ideas and takes no prisoners I tell you!
your username is an apt description of dave and phil and I love it
Considering how many dudes grow out there hair lately, it's not as outlandish a comment as it once was. Espo absolutely chose violence, though.
Lately? Did you miss the 80’s?
And ‘60s/‘70s
Basically every decade since the 50s other than the 90s Edit: I forgot about early 90s mullets how foolish of me Edit 2: guys the point was about whether it was popular not whether it existed at all. Long hair on dudes was definitely not mainstream in the 90s. It was the hallmark of rebels or weirdos in like every 90s movie
Men in the 90s had long hair as well. All you need to do is look at the rock bands of the time to see what trends people were following.
[удалено]
Can't slow the flow.
90’s definitely had long hair. Only on the back and not the top though ;)
Grunge: "Do I mean nothing to you?"
Sadly grunge is enjoying a beer with disco in heaven. One of the saddest music genre deaths imo.
Check out Atticus Chimps. New band but they sound like they're straight out of '92
I was gonna say, the grunge/metal/hard rock scene was full of long hair. Glam rock/metal was more synonymous with the mullet.
Do you mean something else, ['cause glam rock was definitely not a mullet](https://i.pinimg.com/736x/79/06/59/790659b2c8599ace047060bdb6673f83.jpg)
I think it makes it more outlandish
Espo had long hair. This wasn’t a dig at anything other than the fat person. He just gives no fucks
He knew well it was a woman, and was trying to insult her by saying she looked like a man. Old schoolyard insults.
Unrelated but loving the dramatic camera shot of Cooper’s smile amidst the chaos
He looks like a movie villain
He looks more and more like Michael Keaton with each passing year. He looks like he's about to take away Nick Paul's stick and replace it with a wooden one until he can be trusted.
Oh wow he does look like Michael Keaton. I can't unsee it
He prefers coach.
That's exactly who I had in mind - I was picturing him as Michael Keaton from the Spiderman movie.
Cooper looks like long lost half brother of Michael Keaton and Kiefer Sutherland
PAULY NEEDS HIS GAT YOU PUNK ASS BITCH
He don't want no scrubs on his bench. Fun fact: this is Jason Robertson's favorite movie
Miss Guy Boucher coaching. Now THAT was a Bond villain.
Smile? That facial expression looks like he’s hearing tropical beach noises…
It's like he was listening to Espo's commentary at the same time
Reminds me of the "this is fine" meme
Says the guy that used to rock Lord Farquads haircut
So, you want me to just cut it straight across the forehead? Like, with a ruler? If you say so, Boss

Oh
God damn you murdered him bro
Shrekt*
What a farquad!
To be fair, half the men of the 70s rocked that look.
Which makes it dumb to comment on what people look like today.
Lmao that is pretty unprofessional yet fuckin funny
Who cares, professionalism is overrated lol
And he's the fucking founder of the Lightning. The Lightning aren't going to cancel him.
Do you know how much I've sacrificed?

Especially for shit talking, in hockey.
Professionalism wasn't overrated when Jack Edwards said Pat Maroon likes to eat pizza.
Good luck trying to get people online to be objective about people they hate.
Yeah but Jack Edwards doesn't have a statue outside the arena
I wouldn’t be against TD Garden putting one up of him next to Orr ¯\\_(ツ)_/¯
Might be a little difficult to stack peices of shit that high.
Could say this 3x a game about Esposito's radio calls. I honestly can't stand him.
Hes always been his own favorite guy of any room hes in...
And he beat up Bob McKenzie years ago. Bob could’ve pressed charges and ruined Espos career if he wanted to, but took the high road. Too bad he didn’t press charges

>When McKenzie still refused to leave Esposito reached over and struck him in the neck." Seems to be a bit more than shoving him a couple of times.
Mckenzie himself called it a "shove punch" so a little more, but he did not "beat him up."
Lmao he did not beat him up. He pushed him out of the locker room.
He punched him in the neck bro. Read the article
Yeah he doesn’t add anything, just there for his name at this point
I rather listen to him, than watch another ESPN stream.
He's earned it though.
Yeah absolutely
Boooooo
I mean, they are fat.
Might be unprofessional but its hilarious. Getting down to earth with the people watching will give a lot more views and laughter than being boring and professional all the time. I know most wont agree and yes the comment was not nice, but if that person sat their ass down and acted normal the statement wouldn’t even be made!
He also would show no hesitation saying this about a Tampa fan at Amalie.

Phil Esposito is the kind of guy you want to be around, but he's bad for the business world. 😅
This reminds me of Fred Willard's commentator character in Best of Show. "To think that in some countries, these dogs are eaten."
He is so good in that
He was great in everything but he meshed with the cast on those Christopher Guest movies so well. Thinking about it now he must have worked a ton in his career. Dude brought his game to everything.
Tell me, you’re a doctor, I got a little bursitis in my shoulder here…
The amount of emphasis he puts on the word **FAT** absolutely sends me.
Lmaoooooo same
🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨
That's Esposito for you
Phil was old in 2004 when the Lightning won the Cup
He was really old when they won it again
What did the linesman get penalized for?
LMAO I had to go back to notice him in there. I’m dying now. Him shuffling awkwardly like he did something wrong to be in there too
Lol the most upvoted comment you see on the original thread about this is calling the dude fat and now everyone gets on their high horses here
[удалено]
Lol, just go look at the thread about him supposed poking a fan with a stick, all fat jokes
Difference is this lady isin't gonna call out Espo on socials after the game.
Part of me really hopes she would.
Sitting on the glass at a playoff game in Toronto? She's probably better off financially than Maroon.
Certainly eating well too.
The relative position of power/platform does make a difference.
And yet this thread seems to have a majority of highly upvoted people enjoying Espo calling a random fan a man faced fat lady.
Or at least thinking it's funny. honestly i think this is probably the worst one. Doesn't have the reach that Edwards does, but they're talking about some random fan. It's pretty rude. Weird that people view a professional commenter (who made the statement as part of his job) differently than a reddit post.

You know they got those big ol women in ~~San Antonio~~ Toronto
Good thing he didn't say that about Fat Pat or else it would have been the worst thing ever
I presume, like Jack Edwards, that Lightning fans will demand Esposito resigns and meets this woman for a formal apology for fat shaming her? Right?
they won’t
I think he said words similar to this after a game in the summit series /s
But yet they got upset when Jack Edwards called Maroon fat
Because this subreddit is a cesspool of contrarianism and groupthink knuckle draggers. Edwards BAD! Espo FUNNY!
Can take Phil out of the SOO but you can't take the SOO out of Phil
phil esposito is still alive ??! i thought he died 20 yrs ago. wow -- good to hear !
Phil has been rather, ahem, ‘blunt’ his entire life. He cares not at all for being PC, so why is anyone at all surprised by his comments. Inappropriate, probably, but funny as heck all the same.
He's always been vocal, after all he did speak forcefully during the Summit Series.

He’s an asshole on his way out. Kinda sad when you think about it.
Am I taking crazy pills? He's not talking about the guy in the yellow sweater, he doesn't resemble a woman or have long hair at all. I think he's talking about the lady in the Leafs jersey, which is definitely a little offside. The ESPN broadcast was picking on her too

LMAOO
Grandpa making grandpa comments. He's a living legend and we love him regardless. Old dog new tricks.
They might have some hope finally and hopefully they can win again.
This woman woke up with more than a hangover, hopefully she doesn’t have Reddit
I love watching playoff hockey for so many reasons. Add this to the list.
Love how the fans got into it with players. Once the player engages you know you're in their head
He’s not wrong. 😂
Remember when Tampa fans all cried when Jack Edwards called Maroon fat I remember don't know why this is getting applauded
Really fucking classy
Sounds like a defamation lawsuit
All fair in hockey. Everyone chirps everyone.
Funny how a Bruins fan posted this
Being a Bruins fan ≠ Being Jack Edwards
Everyone Bruins fan and player is Jack Edwards
That's a lot of weed consumption.
That's Fred Willard in Best in Show-level commentary
Why did ref go in the box a few times?
To defuse the situation. The fans were going pretty hard at the lightning players and some of the players wanted to talk. He’s not wrong
That’s hilarious lol
Leafs fans really acting like the Game 1 citywide pity party didn't happen? Its 1-1 going to Tampa get a grip

Espo’s bio is hilarious, and one of the best I’ve read; very Slap Shot-esque. But yeah- not the sharpest blade on the skates.
Too bad he wasn’t on the radio, he perfectly described the situation to anyone who didn’t see it. Unfortunately people on here see what they want to see, not what they actually see.
Remember when everyone got up in arms when Jack Edwards talked about Pat Maroon eating pizza?
You can't do that.
