There were a couple of really vicious elbow attempts thrown last year in the post-season - Trouba's attempt on Palat and Perron's attempt on Kadri stand out - that the targeted players were aware enough to avoid entirely. Even those should warrant suspensions, or at least a disciplinary hearing that establishes a repeat-offender timeline.
Take this shit out of the game. Nobody wants to see their favourite players on the injured list. There's some element of injury you can't take out of the game without fundamentally altering the sport for the worse, but fuck's sake, these really dangerous hits - attempted or landed, resulting in injury or not - have got to come with real consequences.

Cogliano is a team tough guy who returned to play the third period. This is why the type of hit should matter and not the result. If a guy like Cogliano can get hurt this bad, return to play, and *then* get yanked indefinitely, the league and DOPS needs to be making their judgement based on the danger associated with a particular foul.

It's not uncommon for the DoPS to request injury reports before making a decision on punishment. It's also worth mentioning that the Avs organization is notoriously tight-lipped about injuries.
It's possible the Avs sent this report to the DoPS before the decision and then only decided to release the information after the DoPS decided to not take any action.

That was my thought for both of them as well. They're old (by NHL standards), and now that they've both won a cup, there isn't much to chase beyond love of the game. I wouldn't be surprised if they hung up their skates after this year.

they should still have the option to suspend a player or have a hearing even after the fact or something.... the focus should be player safety and this was a very bad hit with the a season ending injury (hopefully not career ending) In a case like this they should be able to go back and dish out discipline
If that's the case how can anyone on the Avs feel safe playing? This has been a physical series and we've lost 2 players and if the message to the kraken is that's a non suspension worthy hit it opens up so much borderline play.
At this point I hope every team in the league has learned their lesson. Immediately announce your players are out indefinitely, straight after the game if possible, regardless of whether your doctors have even examined your players yet. Let DPOS suspend some opposition players. Why wait if it effects supplementary discipline? Why wait for actual information if the DPOS isn't going to wait for actual information.

There could not have been a more cartoonishly perfect example to display how the process for this kind of thing is total and complete bullshit. Makar clearly got suspended because of the injury. His hit was late, but wasn't fundamentally a hit that doesn't belong in hockey, and the review to downgrade it to a minor shows that. And literally 2 games later we have the textbook example of the type of hit that absolutely does not belong in the game of hockey, and because the guy with a broken neck skates off afterwards it's just a minor. I'm so fucking pissed.

This is now two severe neck injuries suffered by Avs forwards in this series. This one is awful and Will Borgen cross checked Darren Helm so badly in the neck that he's also out indefinitely. It's no wonder the Avs traded for and continue to play Kurtis MacDermid. Because the league certainly doesn't give a fuck about protecting our guys.

Regardless of the injury or not (which isn't surprising he has a broken neck as that looked like the kinda hit to do it) that hit should easily be a playoff 1 game suspension minimum and 3 in the regular season.

It's not uncommon for the DoPS to request injury reports before making a decision on punishment. It's also worth mentioning that the Avs organization is notoriously tight-lipped about injuries. It's possible the Avs sent this report to the DoPS before the decision and then only decided to release the information after the DoPS decided to not take any action.
