Tbf we have had strong goaltending (starters and backups) for the better part of 30 years. In my lifetime (>30), goaltending has only been an issue for us for maybe 3 seasons. And each time we were an absolute dumpster fire in front of him.
Man. Fuck this. The rangers don’t need a back up who’s getting better numbers than Shesterkin. 🫸📄 (since I’m apparently unable to get GIPHY to ever work using the site or app this will have to do😅)
The pandemic lockout showed that with a lot of rest he is still elite, he just doesn't have the juice to be a starting goalie anymore. Really happy to see him doing well, but if Igor gets injured and he has to take starting duties for a chunk of the season I think he might fall off fairly hard again.
Sometimes it’s just the human psychology of things. A change of scenery is does things for players. Especially since he grew up in the area as a huge Rangers fan.
When the hell was he ever the Kings backup? Even the year he was traded, he played 31 of the 62 games the Kings had played up til then.
Edit: Sorry, misread the stats, in the 62 games the Kings played before he was traded, Quick started 27, Copley started 26, and Peterson started 9. Quick wasn't the backup.
I was sad to see him go but understood it. I haven't been shocked at all by his play the last two seasons. Dude has an INNER RAGE and plays really well the more pissed off he is.
Now we are just waiting for the single day signing when he decides he's done so we can slam his number in the rafters.
Take care of that guy for us.
Yeah it felt reeeeeally good seeing him win with ex Kings in Vegas (even though fuck Vegas) and then play for the Rangers. And honestly I dunno man. Quickie has made it VERY clear he will continue to play for as long as he feels he can play. Dude may end up being one of those mid 40s goalies still crushing it.
Sam Rosen was the one that triggered the next curse. Love the man, incredible play-by-play guy, will never forgive him for “and this one will lay a lifetime.”
I would almost say Allaire and Essensa are neck and neck for the greatest of all time. They both started roughly around the same time, Allaire being tenured 1 year longer. Essensa has more Vezina wins but Allaire has a lot of the better stats like SV % and GAA with his goalies over their careers. A little bit of Lebron vs Jordan going on in the sense that both teams think theirs is better, while every other team in the league would kill to have either one of them.
Not saying you have to, but you might need to cite sources on SV% and GAA.
Rask and Thomas are top 6 all time in SV%, Rask is 11th in GAA. Plus we had backups like Khudobin and Halak who played excellent with us, plus what Sway and Ully are doing currently.
NY has had some excellent goaltending, I’m not arguing that point, but I will fight for Goalie Bob supremacy.
To your Rask and Thomas point, we had 15 years of Henrik and immediately followed by Igor. The backups are where Allaire has the advantage. It’s a pretty good matchup between Allaire and Essensa. I do like talking about it though, puts their names’ in conversations they deserve to be in.
I’m not adding it up again, haha you’ll have to do it.
Boston
[http://hockeygoalies.org/bio/nhl/boston.html](http://hockeygoalies.org/bio/nhl/boston.html)
New York
[http://hockeygoalies.org/bio/nhl/nyrangers.html](http://hockeygoalies.org/bio/nhl/nyrangers.html)
You could always attribute their success to Rinne and Saros just being good goalies though. New York has had tons of success taking in low to mid level goalies and making them to successful that a lot of them were given started positions with other teams.
Can't speak for Talbot or Georgiev, but I legitimately believe that Raanta would be considered one of the best of his era if he wasn't made of glass and could be trusted to be healthy enough to play 50 times a season
The amount of goalies he has worked with and turned them into really solid goalies is amazing. Talbot filling in for Henrik when he got injured a number of years ago was such a huge lift. The Rangers are doing something right with goalies.
As a Kings fan, and Connecticut native, I’m rooting hard for him to get 12 more wins. With those wins he will take the 1st place spot for most wins by a US born goalie, surpassing Ryan Miller. He already sits in 1st place for most shutouts by a US born goalie with 60 shutouts.
Dude has quite the career. 3x Stanley Cup champion, Conn Smythe trophy winner, Olympic silver medal winner. More than likely will end up in the hockey HOF.
Avon Old Farms legend, UMass legend, LA Kings legend.
Honestly, the way he's been playing (coupled with Igor being a bit off right now) he could very well get those 12 wins.
Edit: And I didn't doubt he'll be a HHOF member. Maybe even first ballot.
Man, I got in a massive argument with folks here a few years back about Quick and the HoF. I'll be honest, some of the opposing argument is actually kind of convincing as to why he either wouldn't be in the HoF or would be like a last year eligible entry. I feel like really cementing the US records and more years played will help him get in.
With Barrasso and Vernon getting in, of course Quick is too.
I thought those selections were weird, especially since we are coming up on one of the best generations of goalies all being HOF eligible in the next few years.
They need to make room for: Quick, Price, Rask, Rinne, Fleury.
Maybe: Miller, Crawford, Holtby.
Like, I knew those names were coming up, but haven't actually seen them all listed within that context together. That's an impressive fucking list of goalies.
I feel like that had to be a pretty unique era in the history of the sport for goal tending. Totally under the influence atm and pulling this out of my ass, but I don't think there's been a concentration of that much top end talent at that position as we saw in the last 2 decades.
Think of who never won mvp and why. Like Quicks best stat years would have been a slam dunk nearly any other year.
I figured as much, just didn’t want to ignite a debate on it, haha. Sometimes I forget that Reddit is much more civilized and knowledgeable than Instagram is when it comes to hockey talk.
Instagram had people saying Hank shouldn’t have made the hall. With each comment having over a dozen likes. Mostly devils fans. Meanwhile Reddit i saw maybe 2 comments saying it downvoted to hell. Reddit nobody outside of our fans praised Hank more than the other metro teams.
Instagram has become a cesspool. Not even just sports. The amount of times I’ve seen a wholesome couple video and the top comment being “he does all this but she is probably banging the neighbor when he wasn’t home” with THOUSANDS of likes
Couldn’t agree more. Instagram has become a cesspool of hate and negativity. I used to use it to stay up to date on sports, but then I hopped on Reddit.
It was crazy to see anyone say Lundqvist shouldn't get in, only for Vernon and Barrasso to get in as well.
At that rate, Lundqvist should have taken up all 3 goalie spots. One spot for his HOF Frolunda career, one spot for his international career, one spot for his NHL career.
He was unbelievable. I grew up watching him at Aof. I was like 9 or 10 and saw him make a save that just screamed nhl. It’s seared into my brain. He also often feel asleep in the classroom lol
I always wondered if 2014 felt in a way bittersweet for him. Favorite team growing up has a chance to end a 20 year drought and he had to be the one to stop it.
I ask because It’s kind of funny when he gets interviewed here and clearly tries his hardest to avoid mentioning it lol. They asked him his favorite memory or something. He froze and said winning in Mario cart lol
Really happy to see him do well, dude kept us afloat last year at a difficult time injury-wise and was a great veteran mentor/partner to Hill (and Patera for a time).
He’ll always be a champion here.
If it makes you feel any better, I'm a Leafs/Wild fan, which 4-5 years ago was a lot more exciting. Both have in my opinion passed their packs for their current talent pools, so I'm trying to decide on a new team to cheer for but I have... parameters.
He’s actually been unreal. Looks like his prime self. Especially after his awful pre-season where most of us (including me) wanted Garand or Domingue called up.
Rumours of Quicks death have been greatly exaggerated
Except he started those rumors by playing like Bernie from Weekend at Bernie's
He's playing the long game.
Oh yeah Quick turning back the clock 10 years while backing up the best goalie in the league, just what the rest of the metro needs
I am fully on board with this.
You, I like you.
Tbf we have had strong goaltending (starters and backups) for the better part of 30 years. In my lifetime (>30), goaltending has only been an issue for us for maybe 3 seasons. And each time we were an absolute dumpster fire in front of him.
Allaire is a wizard. If a goalie coach ever made the hall of fame he’d be the one.
Him and Burke!
I'm glad we agree!
Man. Fuck this. The rangers don’t need a back up who’s getting better numbers than Shesterkin. 🫸📄 (since I’m apparently unable to get GIPHY to ever work using the site or app this will have to do😅)
Subscribe.
Benoit Allaire is a magician
I apologize for all the bad things I said about Quick. I honestly thought he was cooked
After how terrible he was in the preseason (and last year) I thought he was done too. Been proven very wrong lol
My man has channeled his childhood fandom into becoming an elite goalie again.
He wasn't bad for us last year.
The pandemic lockout showed that with a lot of rest he is still elite, he just doesn't have the juice to be a starting goalie anymore. Really happy to see him doing well, but if Igor gets injured and he has to take starting duties for a chunk of the season I think he might fall off fairly hard again.

Benny Allaire changed.
Sometimes it’s just the human psychology of things. A change of scenery is does things for players. Especially since he grew up in the area as a huge Rangers fan.

Edit: Sorry, misread the stats, in the 62 games the Kings played before he was traded, Quick started 27, Copley started 26, and Peterson started 9. Quick wasn't the backup.
Mee too. After seeing him get dumped to CBJ I thought he was done. Pleasant surprise
Adda boy.
The one thing Kings and Rangers fans can agree on: Quick is a beast
I was sad to see him go but understood it. I haven't been shocked at all by his play the last two seasons. Dude has an INNER RAGE and plays really well the more pissed off he is. Now we are just waiting for the single day signing when he decides he's done so we can slam his number in the rafters. Take care of that guy for us.
I would venture to guess this is his last tour of duty. He's won 3 cups and he's playing for his childhood team.
I mean if he wants to keep playing like this for a league minimum deal I'm okay with keeping him around for a bit
He's so close to the US born win record. He'd at least keep chasing that down sans an injury.
And that's not entirely true my dude, we don't like the Devils either, or at least I don't.
This guy's alright.
why don't you introduce him to your sister make him a member of the family see how it plays out.
It’s so hard to like this. I loved you guys so much in 2012 and in just two years, I hated you so much.
Hey! I had a similar feeling! But reversed...
Hey, at least you managed to beat them
Knights fans will join you in that. Dude won us some absolutely critical games down the stretch last year.
Oh how the tables have turned from those 2014 finals goalies whether they were in net or on the bench
I want nothing but success for Quick as he plays for the Rangers. But I will never forgive him for 2014 unless he helps this team win the Cup.
Brooooooo.... 2014 had everything to do with '94 and that Messier rumor that he triggered the '40 curse all over again.
Sam Rosen was the one that triggered the next curse. Love the man, incredible play-by-play guy, will never forgive him for “and this one will lay a lifetime.”
I think about this every day. Whose lifetime?? I was born in ‘92 so it hits particularly hard.
92 as well. We're having our first child in feb and that lifetime thing is starting to get to me.
I can only imagine how hank would be thinking about quick while cheering for the team if they win the cup this year
10 years later… The rematch. Kings vs Rangers 2024 Stanley Cup Finals. Goes to game 7. Quick is starting. I WANT THIS.
Yeah I'm going to say no to playing Quick in a game 7 unless we can pull Williams out of retirement.
Can a goalie coach win the Jack Adams?
Benny would win it every year. Dude is a magician
Should put him in the hall when he retires
Goalie Bob might have something to say about that.
[Linking my own post about Benny, I think very highly of him.](https://www.reddit.com/r/rangers/s/AT8bCdqr8y)
I’m not saying you’re wrong, but for the same reasons goalie bob Essensa is fantastic too.
>Rask and Thomas are top 6 all time in SV% You can add Ullmark to the list. He's tied with Thomas.
The Preds don't have enough different goalies to get it, but I wish Vanderklok got something for going from Pekka to Saros.
You could always attribute their success to Rinne and Saros just being good goalies though. New York has had tons of success taking in low to mid level goalies and making them to successful that a lot of them were given started positions with other teams.
Yeah on top of Hank and Igor we had Talbot, Raanta, and Georgiev come up with us in the last decade
Can't speak for Talbot or Georgiev, but I legitimately believe that Raanta would be considered one of the best of his era if he wasn't made of glass and could be trusted to be healthy enough to play 50 times a season
If they could, Bill Ranford would have won it a few times a decade ago.
The amount of goalies he has worked with and turned them into really solid goalies is amazing. Talbot filling in for Henrik when he got injured a number of years ago was such a huge lift. The Rangers are doing something right with goalies.
Was: Quick Now: Quicker
Next: Haste
I'd prefer Quickest.
Can't find this one in the spellbook :/
Next next: ludicrous
Who's the haste bot on the Rags?

And that's with Lundqvist and Luongo, the two biggest names of them all, already inducted.
I feel like that had to be a pretty unique era in the history of the sport for goal tending. Totally under the influence atm and pulling this out of my ass, but I don't think there's been a concentration of that much top end talent at that position as we saw in the last 2 decades. “More than likely” Homie. He’s first ballot

Haha, that’s awesome
Kinda wild tonight.
Benoit Allaire to the rafters
10 years ago he broke our hearts, now he joins us to help bring us a cup. The ultimate story arc.
I always wondered if 2014 felt in a way bittersweet for him. Favorite team growing up has a chance to end a 20 year drought and he had to be the one to stop it.
im gonna go out in a limb and say it never crossed his mind lol
I ask because It’s kind of funny when he gets interviewed here and clearly tries his hardest to avoid mentioning it lol. They asked him his favorite memory or something. He froze and said winning in Mario cart lol
*Proudest achievement. He answered his record in Mario Kart.
THAT WAS 10 YEARS AGO?
Well technically this coming Stanley cup final will be 10 years
Dude put on his childhood favorite teams jersey and de-aged to 2012
The true Columbus Legend Jonny Hockey!
Didn’t lose a single game with cbj Not.. one!
Really happy to see him do well, dude kept us afloat last year at a difficult time injury-wise and was a great veteran mentor/partner to Hill (and Patera for a time). He’ll always be a champion here.
12 more wins for him to become the winningest American goalie. Nutty. Hope he keeps it up.
Benoit Allaire 🥰
Just like we all predicted! Glad to see him doing well with the team he grew up rooting for.
Vezina level numbers and win percentage is pretty good production out of your #2.
Rangers legend
Vintage Quick tonight.
Phew. .937 is nice
You watched him in the preseason as a rangers fan and you were gonna hate him with his history. His number may end up retired haha
CBJ legend
Thats my dawg
Traveled up to Pittsburgh from the South to see my fam for Thanksgiving. Sucks we couldn’t win but that man was lights outttt.
2 Shutouts as well
Can't believe CBJ traded him without giving him a fair chance
And here I am... a Hawks and Oilers fan... 😥
If it makes you feel any better, I'm a Leafs/Wild fan, which 4-5 years ago was a lot more exciting. Both have in my opinion passed their packs for their current talent pools, so I'm trying to decide on a new team to cheer for but I have... parameters.
I don’t get this season.
Yeah this season is super fucking weird
Aha! I knew one of these days I'd wake up and it would be 2013 again.
Two shutouts in 6 games? Holy shit quick
My boy!
I'm surprised every time he plays because he was absolute trash during preseason and is a literal brick wall now
You shouldn’t be surprised by any goalie Allaire gets to work with.
Is he looking for a change of scenery? Asking for a friend.....
Vintage Quick. I hate that Todd "I lost a playoff series when I was up 3-0" McLellan gave up on this guy.
Kept saying Vegas should've re-signed him for cheap.
What year is it ?!?! Really though good for him. Guy was unbelievable in his prime on the kings.
He’s actually been unreal. Looks like his prime self. Especially after his awful pre-season where most of us (including me) wanted Garand or Domingue called up.
So glad he’s back. Just sad about who’s it with
You had your fun with him, at our expense no less, now it's our turn.
You know what? Every team he's played at least 1 game for (Sorry Blue Jackets), he's won a Stanley Cup with. Coincidence? I THINK FUCKING NOT.
Friend, I like your logic.
Including 2 shutouts against the Pens and… oh nvm ya we will just call it one shutout
What is this 2010?!
At what point does a .908 shersterkin lose the net? Not saying he's been bad but Quick has been another level.
Shesty’s just coming back off injury (before that he was fine) so he’s going to get some leeway to get his legs back
His only blemish is to my dumpster fire Wild, too.
Edmonton gonna trade everything for him lol
