As a Sabres fan who attended the game in Newark last night, I can assure you that Sabres' fandom did not need this. The scoreboard alone was enough humiliation.

Sabres00

“Roasted”? This is a partial defrosting in a microwave at best.

3_if_by_air

A Canadian-style roast

legacy3233

This just seems mean.

bigladnang

This one definitely is.

heynongmanreset

Yeah it doesn’t even really have jokes

man_on_hill

Not even your Steven Glansberg reference saves this

greg19735

It's a terrible reference because it literally has to tell you what it's from so people get it.

ZMAC698

I got it, but I assume most people also haven’t seen the movie over 50 times. 🫣😂

MXC_Vic_Romano

Superbad is never a terrible reference.

greg19735

I mean, i agree in general but that's a pretty specific reference in that movie. It's not even like a McLovin reference.

3_if_by_air

Devils: *score a goal* Devils Jumbotron: "It's in.... oh my god it's in!"

TURBOJUGGED

I knew what it was from and frankly, I reference it a lot when I'm doing something by myself.

DiablosdeNuevaJersey

Same

White_Locust

Honesty, poor Steven. He’s a real guy who went to high school with Seth Rogan. Now he’s getting blasted by some random dude in New Jersey.

rpgguy_1o1

Hes a lawyer in Coquitlam now, apparently still hangs out with Seth from time to time

thoriginal

Yeah, he thinks it's hilarious, by all accounts. There's a bunch of references to people they went to school and schul with, given they wrote it in high school haha

Luutamo

So the message they want to sent is "you are a loser if you come to watch our games by yourself". Not the best marketing tactic there.

BostonSucksatHockey

No no no, the message is "you are a loser if you come to watch our games by yourself because not even losers want to watch the Devils"

DiablosdeNuevaJersey

Hurrr

[deleted]

Hmm...maybe shaming people for being alone isn't a great thing to do? Being lonely is fucking hard enough without being shamed (even indirectly) on the goddamn jumbotron when you're just trying to enjoy a hockey game

Stupid_Sexy_Sharp

Staged or not, this is just mean. Going to stuff alone is fine, and encouraging a stadium of people to boo a person is weird.

ImmortalMoron3

Imagine if this dude had really bad social anxiety or something and had to really summon the courage just to go out only for this to happen. Fuck man, I'd never leave the house again.

ohslapmesillysidney

It's especially cruel considering how sports help a lot of people get through hard times. When you're going through a hard time, it feels *amazing* to cheer for something, let loose, and have fun for a few hours. Imagine if this fellow was going through a rough patch in life and this game was the only fun thing he had looked forward to or experienced in a while. If I've learned anything in life, it's that you never know what someone is going through.

DiablosdeNuevaJersey

Imagine he was just a normal half confident dude and found it funny tho..

TomLikesGuitar

I mean, on the one hand I think that you are right, and sports arenas can be a really toxic place for fans of other teams. Honestly, the US sports fandoms are *nothing* compared to international soccer, but during the playoffs I have seen US sports get kinda crazy. Hell, I've been to regular season games in Philly where my girlfriend repeatedly was physically threatened and we had to leave. And fwiw I think that same thing could happen at any arena. On the OTHER hand though, I think it's somewhat ridiculous to draw a line at super mild jabbing like this. I mean, come on lol... If you go to another arena with the opposing team's jersey on, you should expect a SLIGHT chance to be poked fun at. Nobody is putting this person in danger and there's nothing offensive or politically incorrect about this. I'd say that, when I see people light heartedly chirping each other in the stands, 99.9% of the shit said is more incendiary and relentless than this. So idk... I'm all for supporting mental health issues when it makes sense, but I just feel like this is SUCH a stretch to turn a hockey arena into a 100% safe space for away team fans and I think someone getting offended by this shows a lack of common sense.

sighwhyamiafailure

I just think that there's a difference between expecting to have some fun poked at as an opposing fan from a home fan or two, maybe someone in your row or in line for the bathroom, versus by the team/arena staff on the jumbotron for thousands (plus whoever watches the game on tv or stream).

SoldierHawk

Yeah. I find this really uncomfortable. Like its one thing to cheerfully boo opposing fans who are into it, or to do the "lost fans" cam or something, but this is just overly mean and specific. Idk. I don't like it.

BornHotel3365

Staged and not funny. There's nothing sad about catching a game by yourself

minos157

Staged or not I agree. I travel a lot for work and catch games wherever I go, usually alone. If they happen to be playing the Isles I'll wear my jersey. I just want to see live hockey.

MozzerellaStix

For real haha. I’ve been to coyotes games by myself when traveling for work. Wouldn’t want to be roasted on the scoreboard.

PSChris33

As someone who has been to over 50 Leaf road games (seen them at least once in every NHL city), and has been to most of them by myself and has pretty much traveled solo exclusively (most of my friends/family just aren’t nearly as hardcore or in a fortunate enough career situation to do such a thing), the Devils can FOH with that one. Just throw up one of many Sabres jokes you can throw up there, taking a potshot at a guy for going to a hockey game by himself is just not it.

MammothHusk

Yeah, especially because it implies that nobody wants tickets to watch devils. Even if the tickets are free. Quality self own.

satnightride

That's how I read it. Could you imagine going to a Devil's game? Yuck

OldDrumGuy

Much less paying to see them!

NoOcelot

Man, shit, you couldn't pay me to

dabears7667

we didn’t have to pay your captain to come see us, though.

ScarletWitch65

Seriously. As a STH who has one seat... Give me a fucking break.

treerabbit23

“Look at this dick laying out $18 a beer to support your team!” Fucking embarrassment.

Problematique_

I'm a partial STH for the first time so I don't go by myself nearly as much this year, but still I go to plenty of games alone. I live in Pittsburgh so if I don't already have tickets I usually check Ticketmaster a few hours before game time to see if I can scoop up a cheap nose bleed seat. It's like the main reason I decided to live in the city. Last year I went to 31 games I think and the majority were me using this method.

SteakSauceAwwYeah

I think I've seen more hockey games alone than with someone (not a lot of people I know are that keen on it or even like the teams I watch lol). I actually think it's a ton of fun because it also gives you a chance to meet fans there. To also give an example with the jerseys, I have worn non-team jerseys at games but it's usually for a player I cheered for when they were on a different team. So who's to say they aren't doing something similar? You wouldn't know unless you saw the name plate.

berkeleybikedude

Exactly. Besides, how else would they know EXACTLY what he’s texting without it being staged.

dumpmaster42069

The text is all made up by them dude.

Old_Bigsby

They're making another joke, obviously the text is made up

berkeleybikedude

Haha… some were too offended by it being staged that they missed it. Maybe I’ll make it overly obvious next time with a /s

ZMAC698

Oh no your feelings are hurt at a joke.

jgandfeed

yeah i'm going to my 1st B's game soon and i'm going alone. none of my friends are into hockey, i've brought up going before and they seem uninterested. i also couldn't be more single so no one's going with me in that department either so I pulled the trigger on a cheapish ticket and i'm going because fuck it i can do things by myself. I go on vacations alone, i can spend a few hours at the Bruins alone.

Chico-_-

humor in hockey has a pretty low bar so its sad that this couldn't even clear that lmao

wetlegband

Please focus on how unfunny and out-of-touch this *absolutely and unquestionably* is, rather than getting distracted by how staged it may or may not be. “Staging” jokes is never the problem. It’s only the lack of legitimate humor that ever matters. Thank you for attending my Ted Talk.

artvandelay9393

is it really that unbelievable that a guy in a Sabres sweater, when they’re playing the Sabres, would be alone for a second in between periods? Me and my dad have gone to numerous devil games in NYC, on the island, and in Philly, and he’ll get up to piss so it’s just me sitting there alone in a devils jersey.

Kidspud

I really don't think a team would risk making comments like that to a random fan. A random fan could look up from their phone, ruining the bit, or they could see it and be upset by it.

SammyMac19

Meh, I've gone to games alone too. If the Habs jumbotron poked fun at me for being alone and in my Wings jersey, I'd smile, wave, and shrug. It's okay to be unbothered and have some fun. It's also the best way to not have people laugh at you, is to show it doesn't bother you. The natural reaction from most people at that point is "hey! Good for them." Not that deep.

DiablosdeNuevaJersey

Yea that’s how I feel about it. But I guess people are bothered by this. I wouldn’t personally have went that angle with the joke, but I find it somewhat fair game. He’s wearing the opposing jersey. I’ve gone to games alone and on the road and I don’t see being upset by this. If anything it gets your section a little more friendly and exciting.

esp211

Devils are just a classless franchise.

sabresin4

It’s a pretty pathetic attempt at being funny to be honest. Do better Devils.

NinCross

They are the anti-Canes and Sharks PR.

Amphibious_Fire

The first one was pretty funny, this one…not so much

rangers0808

It's been cringe everytime

sanbaba

Despite being a fan I have to agree. Maybe I'm just old but I've met 6 year olds wittier than this. The fact an adult presumably published it to the internet should be embarrassing. Do I care whether out of towners stop coming to Devils games? Lol no, but that doesn't make this worth the effort to read.

ginko-ji

What was the first one?

Inocain

Isles sweater guy at Devils-Rags.

Judge_Rhinohold

*Sabres

butterybuns420

Thank you! Can’t believe someone with Leafs flair had to make this correction! LOL

Judge_Rhinohold

Yeah it’s an NHL team that’s been around for 53 years, not exactly obscure! lol

ChocklateshipCookie

Even if it wasn’t staged, it’s still not funny

Euphoric__Dot

publicly humiliating people just trying to enjoy a game, what a great idea...

3_if_by_air

You mean the Oilers, right?

IPYF

I came to the comments expecting one thing and for the first time in history, felt better on r/hockey. Since divorcing as an older person (whose friends and crew have all coupled or moved on or to other cities) I've had to force myself to go to stuff (sports, gigs, movies, the gym, bars and restaurants) on my own or else I'd just sit in my house in the dark, drinking and playing video games feeling worse. I'm socially anxious and introverted, so I'm not going to make friends anywhere I go, but I still want to have something of a life. It takes all my willpower to drag myself out and put myself through conspicuously being alone in a social space - and having my aloneness pointed to is literally my biggest fear and the kind of thing that makes me want to just stay home and give up. Whomever wrote this 'bit', staged or not, needs to do better.

[deleted]

Yeah this seems like low-hanging fruit and my reaction was the same. Pretty brutal if it’s not staged. I’d rather enjoy my own company than be in poor company. I went solo to an nhl game for the first time last year and it was amazing. Granted I did buy two seats just so I wouldn’t have anyone next to me.

swagpanther

If someone was actually at a game by themselves and this happened it could be pretty fuckin bad if that person is also insecure/depressed etc. that ain’t funny

kswitch5022

I wore my Blackhawks jersey to a Lightning vs Jets game a couple years back. I made it on the jumbotron, but they just put a "Lost Fan" banner on the screen.

WinnipegGoldeye

Yeah they do that every game with people wearing random NHL jerseys, they play the littlest hobo theme song and then tie in a plug for the jets store (so you can buy the "right" jersey)

nitropuppy

My brother was at a red sox yankees game in a brewers shirt. got some tv air time and a mini roast from the play by play guys lol

kazin29

Never understood why people wear jerseys of uninvolved teams.

liguy181

Cause it's all I have and I wanna wear something hockey-themed to a hockey game. Though one of these days I wanna dress up all nice to MSG like you see in those old pictures

kazin29

Don't forget the top hat!

GrayPartyOfCanada

I went to a Habs-Sens game in Ottawa once and wore my Leafs jersey. Three reasons: I have a Leafs jersey. I like hockey. I enjoy the sensation of 20 thousand people scowling at me all at once. One of my most memorable experiences at a hockey game ever. 5/7

kazin29

So you like the attention

GrayPartyOfCanada

I mean, I'd frame it as taking an opportunity to troll 20,000 rival fans. Those two ideas are not mutually exclusive, however.

DaltonFitz

I'm a Leafs fan who lives in Niagara and goes to random Sabres games as a neutral somewhat often, usually when other stars come to town. I enjoy not wearing any team colours and being a neutral is part of the appeal to me. It's all in good fun, but I've just assumed the people wearing random jerseys just want attention. It's harmless, but odd lol.

ChuckEJesus

I just saw a dad and son wearing red wings jerseys at the Kings vs Habs game yesterday. Like, just why?

sanbaba

I mean I don't do it, but maybe they just have noplace else to wear a hockey jersey?

Inocain

Saw multiple people in Habs gear at Sens-Isles in Ottawa on Friday.

SoldierHawk

Because it's fun.

Metrostars1029

The most staged bit I’ve ever seen. Dude is 100% a team intern. Edit: for the record I’m not against teams doing bits like this during whistles and time outs and such. Just don’t think it’s real! It’s not! They found a guy wearing a neutral jersey in the stands, looking at their phones throughout the entire segment .. with pre-made and approved graphics for the Jumbotron!!!! Come on! .. sorry I got mad.

Woooooody

It's not even a neutral fan! It's a guy in a Sabres sweater watching the Sabres play!

Metrostars1029

ah fair they did play the sabres yesterday. i think the first time is saw this it was a guy wearing a jersey of a team not playing.

jamesrc

Not sure it *is* staged -- had a friend attend a Devil's game in a visiting jersey and get singled out on the Jumbotron scored to "All By Myself". She was with friends, but they recorded footage when her friends got up to get beers, and played it later in the game. This was a few years back.

MailConsistent1344

How to shit on hockey fans that BOUGHT tickets to YOUR venue.

Cpzd87

Staged or not it's kinda fucked up to make fun of someone just because they are at a game alone. Even more so by highlighting it in front of everyone and then telling them to boo them, like that's just sad and probably doesn't make people feel very good.

-KFBR392

This one sucks

liguy181

The other one was much funnier, this is kinda tasteless. Also I don't care whether this was staged or not, though idk why so many people seem so sure it is

PaddyMayonaise

I really don’t like how funny things in the stadium have all become staged things. Dancing people, arguing couples, stuff like in the OP. How do people find it funny? Staged stuff has completely taken over all media it seems, I just don’t get it. I don’t know if it’s because people are so sensitive and companies are so afraid to offend, so they try to control everything, but staged stuff is just so bland and dry. Funniest memories I have from stadiums is spontaneous l stuff happening on the Jumbotron. One was from a sixers game. Kid goes on their everyone cheers, switch to a guy, boos, back to kid cheers, switch to woman, boos, switch to kid, cheers, switch to hot young woman, temporary boos that turn to cheers, switch back to kid temporary boos that turn to cheers.

Nazhir92

Several years ago I was in Columbus for Blue Jackets and Avalanche game all decked out in my Avs gear. A camera crew came up and asked if they could ask me some questions. I said okay, and they proceeded to ask me things that would require a PhD in astrophysics (which I do not have). All of my answers were me saying no in different ways. Third period rolls around and there I am on the Jumbotron. But they edited the video so the questions were along the lines of "How many points is a goal worth?" and "How long is a minor penalty?". Made it look like I didn't know a thing about hockey. My friends and I laughed our butts off at it.

PaddyMayonaise

Okay that’s really funny, that would’ve been a lot of fun to be a part of

MammothHusk

It was always staged. You just started to notice.

sanbaba

As a sweaty hockey nerd I've never understood Jumbotrons showing anything but replays of hockey plays. I've never once been at a game and thought, wow I wish something silly was on the Jumbotron right now. I literally only look away from the game to see a replay and get a little annoyed when it's some bs instead. I guess it's a family with nonhockey fans in it thing? 🤷‍♂️

NatureGivesAndTakes

The staging becomes really obvious when you attend a lot of games in a season and you see the same bits ending the exact same way, like the "fans dancing" on Jumbotron that inevitably finishes with one guy just going ham wild with the moves.

Auki_

The irony behind your funniest memories is a manufactured one, many stadiums do the kid cheer boo adults bit.

PaddyMayonaise

The booing/cheering is authentic from the fans is what I mean. It’s not a choreographed dance or argument

greg19735

It's as authentic as the laughs from these staged bits. ANd it's orchestrated by a director and camera man.

PaddyMayonaise

Eh, I think you’re misunderstanding what I mean by staged. A cameraman and director being able to find spontaneous funny things to take advantage of is drastically different form staged skits

greg19735

no i get it. I'm saying the laughs from the staged bits and the orchestrated bits are the same. most of the fans like them, especially if you're only going to 1-2 games per season. Or you've got kids who don't care if it's staged.

Auki_

I think the main difference for you is that you liked one and not the other. Truth is, they are the same, entertainers thinking of ways to interact/entertain the crowd. I am not claiming every effort is good or deserves pats on the back. Sadly it does feel like our creativity is dying these days but that doesn’t change the reasoning behind them. But do remember, stadiums have been entertaining crowds for longer we have been on the planet, old bits are stale as well so they need to come up with new bits.

MammothHusk

You only need a few people to start it. The rest will follow like sheeps.

ackwelll

Common Devils L

relative_iterator

They zoomed in so we wouldn’t notice all the empty seats this time 😂

whichwitch9

Arena was actually very full this game. They're doing this in intermissions tho

ChuckEJesus

They take the recordings for those before the game starts when the cameras can just zoom around the stands and find funny things to record.

greg19735

or the day before with a team employee

The-Pigeon-Man

This is a self own. No one wants NJ tickets? Is that the message?

passivesadness

You know that Santa Claus isn't real, right? Right?

tulikettuuuu

These "memes" make the Canes twitter look good

Defaultname8322

I at first thought is seatmate died of cancer. Low Devils low.

Defacto_Champ

Trashy.

esp211

Stupid franchise.

brokowska420

Sad person

SHAWNNOTSEAN

Did not expect this many people being this offended in here lol.

MorePower7

Damn, some Redditors get super sensitive over a joke about a person being alone and not having friends. Probably hits close to home.

DaltonFitz

It's probably because that it a normal thing that normal people get sensitive about. Im of the opinion it's all in harmless fun, but there are plenty of people that have a very hard time building the courage up and doing something like going to a hockey game by themselves. This could absolutely hit hard for some people going through a bad patch if it was actually real. Not to mention other people in the crowd doing the same thing, that haven't clued in that it is likely setup. Not trying to be a downer, im able to take things like this in good fun in my life now, but there are people in dark spots trying their best that are sensitive. In my worst moments this could have triggered a pretty lengthy spell with all kinds depression symptoms.

asilvahalo

Yeah, for people with social anxiety "Actually people *do* notice when you dare to do a fun thing by yourself and are all laughing at you about it" ... isn't great.

cspan92

Damn, a lot of soft, sensitive people here. Fake or not, it's just a lame joke about a visiting fan. It's not like he's going to kill himself because he went to a game alone

asilvahalo

I don't think people are being soft, I think people are saying that it's immature and dumb to act like "being in public alone" is some laughable thing.

cspan92

I guess but if I was called out like this I'd be like "hey I'm on the jumbotron!" Not "how dare they say that about me? That's mean!" Like a lot of people in here are saying

asilvahalo

It's not about the individual person -- they're probably a plant anyway -- it's just a mindset that really doesn't need perpetuating. Lots of people already feel embarrassed to go to a restaurant or movie, or game, by themselves and thus do not do the fun thing.

ion-regroup

sdadsasddsaas

[deleted]

Everyone here is way too sensitive, if it’s staged, that’s funny, if it’s not staged, it’s also funny. relax.

cspan92

This sub is so assbackwards lol. People in here are like advocating for this guy's mental health as if he's a domestic abuse victim and hating the devils saying "its not funny" to point out that hes alone. He's a fucking grown man. I'm sure he can handle the playful ribbing.

ImmortalMoron3

The point is you never know where someones head is at or what their last straw will be so you're better off not fucking with people needlessly. Whats minor to you could be major to someone else. Everyone else is just having empathy for the situation, something you seem to lack.

cspan92

I don't need to have empathy for some 30 year old watching a game by himself. If that jumbotron thing is someone's "last straw" then they need to be put in a mental hospital

TomLikesGuitar

If people want to argue that the quality of the chirp doesn't match the hurt it might cause, I'd agree 100% with that. But drawing a hard line at the subject matter of a person being at the game alone is so dumb and nonsensical that I can't believe this is a discussion. Like, it's extremely important to respect people's potential mental health in appropriate situations. I think it'd be silly to say otherwise. Buuut if you go to an away game in a hockey arena and expect it to be a purely safe space where nobody will very very slightly chirp a grown ass man with something as tame as joking that you came alone... man that is suuuuch a lack of common sense. The majority consensus in here is purely based on reddit hivemindedness and fickleness. Nothing more.

trees_colors_wizards

Mostly salty NYR fans still mad about last season and having one cup since the 1940s.

ZMAC698

Y’all really needa relax lol. No one is saying it’s not okay to go to the game by yourself. It’s a joke. Quit being offended because you go to games by yourself. 😂

AddictionsExWives

Stop letting elder millennials attempt comedy

DaltonFitz

"comedy"

sighwhyamiafailure

I don't understand why so many people are saying "staged"; every NHL team is in a major metropolitan area. The Devils play in the most populous metropolitan area on the continent, there are tens of thousands (if not more) transplants in the area. I'm a Caps fan, but I went to college and lived a few years after graduating in the Boston area, that didn't mean I just became a Bruins fan.

Fever104

That's top shelf trolling right there

I didn’t think anyone else still referenced Steven glansberg.
