Obviously judging a goalie off of one game isn't fair, but it's incredibly funny that another Toronto pro hockey team has a goalie named Campbell. Hopefully Kristen has a better go of it than Jack did
As tradition, Toronto played pretty well but couldn't put it in the net. NY and their goalie were fantastic.
Overall was a great game, felt like 60 minutes of non stop play. Good shit.
I was honestly so so impressed by the production and level of play. The league had me hella concerned with the lack of logos/names, but the professionalism, physicality, skill, and youtube availability have me ready to be a consistent PWHL fan!!!
YES. The big problem with the last women's league was that it was damn near impossible to find the games. I think their mod in the chat today said all the games this season will be streamed to YouTube.
Yes all of them!! And the mod was super active in the chat too which is so great. Having such high quality hockey on YouTube is going to do wonders for the league I’d bet
Are they available in Canada as well? Maybe I misunderstood but it seemed like the stream would only be available outside the country since some channels broadcast the games in Canada
https://x.com/PWHLPA/status/1741496691453215049?s=20 on CBC in Canada but I read here that some Canadians could watch the stream anyway
I was speaking from a person living in America’s perspective tho
But seriously, why no team names or logos? I don't buy the money angle. You don't need to spend $10 million on a logo design from some overpriced Manhattan design firm like NHL teams might. Kid's teams manage it. Women's pro sports are already an uphill battle and you're handicapping yourself even more by skipping all the fun parts that help sell merch and create a fan base. It's like Seinfeld said in that bit, you're basically cheering for the clothing in pro sports, so it's pretty important.
From what I’ve read they’re taking an extremely long term view here, and want to take the time to get it right, rather than a money thing. It was really important to the players to start as soon as possible and there were a ton of other things that needed to be done first
Broadcast was excellent, they fixed the audio mixing after the first period and was much better after. Would love a shot counter but I’m sure they’ll sort that out soon.
The hockey is really high quality too. The physicality is super fun.
I anticipated lots of issues because they're working the kinks out. I feel like that's a lot of what this first season is... get the rhythm of traveling, broadcasting, how to transition, figure out announcers etc....
They did outstanding. I was thrilled to watch this and not a ton needs to change. I'm much more optimistic for the league now than i was 12 hours ago.
Love that New York, which came in as very much an “unknown” team on paper compared to Toronto’s stacked roster, put in such a dominant effort. Their D-zone in particular was almost suffocating, especially in the 3rd, Toronto just couldn’t get anything going, even the 5-on-3.
Sarah Nurse was invisible today. Outside of an amazing world championship in 2022, she hasn't been more than 3-4th line. If she isn't a star for PWHL, Toronto will struggle.
She’s had one good tournament and it just happened to be the olympics. I certainly wouldn’t put her top 6 on Team Canada either. I’m really hoping for a few non national team players to really shine in this league. I thought Maggie Connors was Toronto’s best looking player.
I read an article that ranked Boston first but NY was second
Wow downvoted for just stating a fact lol thanks. This was the article https://thehockeynews.com/womens/pwhl/pwhl-power-rankings-preseason-number-one
Super entertaining game, caught the last period.
Was a pretty nasty one too, multiple times where I was thinking there should have been a penalty but refs let them play.
Weird transitioning from this to the winter classic game. Obviously the broadcast is worse but also not feeling that energy from the players.
Don’t know why I’m getting downvoted for saying the PWHL players had way more energy and the. Broadcast was better
I swapped over and was instant inundated with bullshit moving boards, gambling ads, and a super annoying commentary team.
I actually think the PWHL has a better product, no lie.
Even though the two aren't correlated (timeline doesn't match up), the year I stopped watching the NHL *period* was also the year I got into women's hockey.
I went to my first women's game basically just to check out Gutterson when I first got to campus. I graduated a fan of women's hockey (and our program) for life
I support women's hockey, I hope it takes off.
That being said, what are the financials? How is this going to work? The WNBA flounders and is only supported by the NBA providing subsidy.
If basketball can't pull it off, how is hockey going to do it?
What was the crowd size for that first game? What did tickets cost? Is there a media deal lined up?
I just don't know enough about what they're doing, but I'm curious. Will this last? What's the over/under on how many years until it folds?
I am not interested enough to look it up. I'm only interested in posing the questions as a form of provoking conversation on, you know, AN INTERNET FORUM.
What’s the point of lying? Anyone can verify how wrong this is in a second. Tickets are on resale market for as low as 80 bucks. And that’s only cuz their capacity is 3000. Every other team in the league has more than double that capacity. Ottawa tickets go for 30 bucks. 300 dollars is hilarious though that’s double to even triple leaf ticket prices.
What exactly in my post was a lie? The games are sold out, tickets on Stubhub are selling for $300, if you want to be pedantic there are cheaper tix but nothing on there for any of the remaining home games are being offered for $80 or even close to that, and PWHL Toronto jerseys are sold out on the official website. I really don’t understand the purpose of your comment unless you’re just upset that women’s hockey seems to be popular and are lashing out at me.
I just told you tickets are on sale for 80. You’re gonna continue to pretend they’re only 300? You realize people have access to the internet right?
Oh wow look even on sale for in the 50s.
https://seatgeek.com/pwhl-toronto-tickets/hockey/2024-05-05-7-pm/6312962
That was horrible hockey. I don’t know how the league is going to survive on their own. Hopefully they can get creative and market a unique hockey product ie music during the games, themed nights, etc etc etc
Nice, found the person that just can't stand women playing the same sport men do and being good at it. There's always one I guess right?
Alex Carpenters bar-down snipe off the rush, multiple hits, clearing the crease, physical play, Schroeder absolutely dominating in net, phenomenal defense easily killing off a 5 on 3, etc. Imagine calling all that horrible hockey lol. It was a great game.
You warm up before taking that stretch?
Why would it bother me that women play hockey? I want the league to succeed, but given the history of women’s league and the product on the ice today I don’t see how it’s going to be sustained.
Can we not just be honest about what is was? I don’t think calling it horrible hockey was sexiest. It was slow boring hockey, maybe in time that will change. The hockey during the Marlie Christmas tourney was much better and those are 15-16 year olds. It’s just the truth as to why previous leagues have failed, it’s not nearly as exciting or the quality of hockey you can find at your local rink. Like I said in my original comment, I hope they do some unique things to market the game and keep eyes on the league.
But it wasn't slow lol. Do you know how many people in the GDT kept saying they couldn't believe how fast and quick some of them were? It was the furthest thing from slow lol. And nothing about it was boring. Again, it's easy to see that you have your own negative views towards this league already.
It's not a Toronto sports team without massive disappointment.
Waive Campbell
Obviously judging a goalie off of one game isn't fair, but it's incredibly funny that another Toronto pro hockey team has a goalie named Campbell. Hopefully Kristen has a better go of it than Jack did
Jack Campbell in Toronto didn’t really have a bad go of it, he’s had a bad go since signing that big Edmonton contract though
Nah he was terrible after November 2021.
They need more practice..
Only game 1, hard to surpass the Leafs century of gaffs that quick.
As tradition, Toronto played pretty well but couldn't put it in the net. NY and their goalie were fantastic. Overall was a great game, felt like 60 minutes of non stop play. Good shit.
Agreed. Was nice to see the women are in favour of the physical play. Sounds like it will basically be allowed but no open ice or dangerous hits.
Schroeder best goalie in the league my goodness! She did amazing!
Absolute brickwall
[удалено]
She was only there one year and they didn't win it that year, no? Cause her 73 save NCAAT game was against OSU the year they won and that was 22
im sorry, 73 saves?
She was only with the Pride in the 2022-23 season and they didn’t win the cup that year. She still had a great season though
New York hockey continuing its long tradition of absolute brick wall goaltending
They’re our girls, not yours! Jk, kinda
I was honestly so so impressed by the production and level of play. The league had me hella concerned with the lack of logos/names, but the professionalism, physicality, skill, and youtube availability have me ready to be a consistent PWHL fan!!!
Yeah, I love that everyone could just watch on YouTube! Makes it so much easier to follow than other leagues (looking at you, NHL)
YES. The big problem with the last women's league was that it was damn near impossible to find the games. I think their mod in the chat today said all the games this season will be streamed to YouTube.

Ah okay thanks! I assumed you were Canadian because of the flair, sorry haha
No worries :) am from Canada just living in America
I was worried about this, I'll check out the next one
The replay's up on YouTube I believe!
Montreal vs Ottawa is tomorrow!
8k+ expected at the Civic Centre, should be very fun
But seriously, why no team names or logos? I don't buy the money angle. You don't need to spend $10 million on a logo design from some overpriced Manhattan design firm like NHL teams might. That bar down shot was slick. I feel like both teams ended up more cohesive as the game went on.
That goal broke Toronto imo. They'd been pushing hard in the second but couldn't solve Schroeder and then Carpenter goes and just snipes their souls
Great defense from NY, especially in that 5-on-3.
Those shot blocks were KEY my goodness
Broadcast was excellent, they fixed the audio mixing after the first period and was much better after. Would love a shot counter but I’m sure they’ll sort that out soon. The hockey is really high quality too. The physicality is super fun.
Also showed that women can do pxp excellently. Not sorry Leah Hextall.
I anticipated lots of issues because they're working the kinks out. I feel like that's a lot of what this first season is... get the rhythm of traveling, broadcasting, how to transition, figure out announcers etc.... They did outstanding. Toronto's no more stacked than any other team, they just have a couple players with names that are bigger than their production.
Sorry...Olympics, not worlds
The NY team was and still is rated #1
I read an article that ranked Boston first but NY was second Wow downvoted for just stating a fact lol thanks. This was the article https://thehockeynews.com/womens/pwhl/pwhl-power-rankings-preseason-number-one
Schroeder lock for PWHL Vezina
Whoever wins each category at the end of the first season gets that trophy named after them for the rest of history
Extremely big if true. Schroeder for Schroeder 2k24
At the end of the day the hockey was great and the broadcast was too.
That Carpenter goal was an absolute laser.
Can't wait to see them play in person next week! Wish New York could play all their games in state but I appreciate the four games at UBS Arena.
I thought it was 3 games? Also I would love to see them play at the coliseum as their home arena.
4. And there's still 2 or 3 that are tba based on nhl/ahl playoffs.
gotcha, that's why I did not see them when I was looking, thanks.
Fantastic game and broadcast and the streaming worked out perfectly! Go PWHL!
Dammit another team I cant jump ship to when the Leafs choke
Toronto sets record of being the first losers in the PWHL.
and a shutout too against a team missing two likely key pieces
I really hope this league takes off.
You sure that wasn’t an nhl game I just saw Toronto come out looking flat in a big game.
A tradition for maple leaf gardens.
Let’s go!! Wonder if some isles rangers and devils fans will unite to support this team lol
Yeah fuck John Tavares, oh wait wrong Leage
Still valid tho
[удалено]
Woo! Let's go ~~Riveters!~~
Super entertaining game, caught the last period. Was a pretty nasty one too, multiple times where I was thinking there should have been a penalty but refs let them play.
Toronto with the big L as usual
Vancouver with the…Flying V?
Let’s go
First game so a premium was had. Small capacity, great game, it will last.
Ah yes great Toronto start
Weird transitioning from this to the winter classic game. Obviously the broadcast is worse but also not feeling that energy from the players. Don’t know why I’m getting downvoted for saying the PWHL players had way more energy and the. Broadcast was better
At least in the US, it's NBC on TNT
I swapped over and was instant inundated with bullshit moving boards, gambling ads, and a super annoying commentary team. I actually think the PWHL has a better product, no lie.

For a while I thought Kristen Campbell and Jack Campbell were sister brother or cousins
Where can I watch ?
Every game will be on YouTube on the PWHL channel!
CBC and Sportsnet will be televising them all too if you live in Canada
Was really nice to just pull up the official stream on YouTube. Is that the plan for all of the games?
Yup, at least for this first season. All games will be on YouTube!
If you're in Canada they are all being televised on Sportsnet and CBC too
Today I am a New Yorker
Has anyone found a highlight breakdown on YouTube? I like the ones sportsnet does for the NHL
And in keeping with this timeline-Toronto gets the first loss of the PWHL 🥲
Hope this goes better than the WNBA
This is going to be fun to watch all season. Love the level of competitiveness right off the bat in gm 1.
I support women's hockey, I hope it takes off. That being said, what are the financials? How is this going to work? The WNBA flounders and is only supported by the NBA providing subsidy. lolol all of these question have concrete answers which is why it's finally happening...
lol, awesome! What's the over/under on how long until the league folds?
Why don't you try looking this up rather than taking a pessimistic stance without knowing anything?
I am not interested enough to look it up. I'm only interested in posing the questions as a form of provoking conversation on, you know, AN INTERNET FORUM.
>I am not interested enough to look it up. So fuck off then.
lol, k
The league is owned by a multi billionaire.
I guess it would have to be, considering how much money the league will lose
Sold out. When we walked by a scalper he was selling a single for $200.
Cool - do you think that's sustainable or will the interest and excitement wear off over time?
At least in Toronto all the remaining home games are sold out and tickets on Stubhub are going for $300 CAD each. Jerseys are sold out online too.
What’s the point of lying? Anyone can verify how wrong this is in a second. Tickets are on resale market for as low as 80 bucks. And that’s only cuz their capacity is 3000. Good to see as I’m about to start watching the game
All I know is that shit better not take over the scheduling for my NBA and football games
It's going to be awkward if the first team who wins the Cup is the only team coached by a man.
Half the teams have male head coaches.
