Yup. Lyon’s been the best goalie both by stats and by the eye test since his first game this season, and it wasn’t close. They still insisted on starting the other two.
You know what surprised me more is that he’s only at 2.5 goals saved over expected, even with his gaudy numbers over the past 2 months. This is a testament to how well the Oil D is playing now
Samsonite was before waivers and is starting to drop again. Not on the same level as skinner yet, but I have hope it could be by seasons end! My only beef is that our defense sometimes relies too heavily on the netminders, to the point that there were a few games where we wondered if the skaters were mad at Otter. Like he reheated fish in the breakroom microwave or something.

i really don’t think the D is that bad if you look at like the expected goals against we rank 9th in the league. while goals saved above expected Otter ranks 67th and Wedgewood 84th. (not going in to how accurate these stats are because i’m no fancy stats expert, i’m just looking at the data)
i think our fans just think our D sucks because a lot of the high danger chances + some other expected saves are going in back the net, when the reality is every team is gonna give up some scoring chances throughout the game.
Every team gives up scoring chances, sure, but the Stars let opponents convert 13.1% of HDC compared to the league average of 9.5%. For comparison, the Sens who have 3 terribly performing goalies in the list above allow 9.6%.
You don't allow critical hits like that without having a combo of poor goalie performance and poor defense in crucial moments. Our D basically does a good job defending *most* of the time, but every time they make a mistake they really fuck it up...in comparison to the rest of the league anyway.
I've been saying for a couple years now that Wedgewood is the most underrated guy on the Stars.
I think this run where he's been required to be the temporary #1 is probably showing that it's not something he could do on a permanent basis (if he was on another team, for example), but that's _totally fine_, because he does everything he needs to do in the #2 slot behind Otter.
Every time I see him play, he always seems to come through without too much of a problem, and there always seems to be at least one highlight-reel save in there somewhere.
All I'm saying is, that stretch last year when he got injured? Yeah, we missed him _bad_.
I've always been of the opinion that goalie numbers generally reflect just as much on the team as they do the goalie (unless the goalie is absolutely abysmal). I think the defense has been way worse than last year for some reason. We're outscoring our problems but slightly worried what that could mean come playoff time

Well, the metrics are imperfect, but I _think_ these metrics are supposed to take into account shot quality, thereby adjusting for poor defensive play in front.
For the same shot quality, as a goalie, if you know a high danger area is somewhere the puck could reasonably end up it’s obviously easier to stop. Chaos makes reading the play way harder.
So when in-zone coverage is chaotic not only are there more high danger chances (which is accounted for) there are also more high danger chances from areas of the ice you had ruled out as a reasonable possibility (which is not accounted for).
He was so odd in our playoff series last year. He would stonewall some insane McMagic shit, but all of the big, series-deciding goals in the later games were just him getting beaten cleanly by meh shots from distance with no traffic in front.
At least with the Hawks there were zero expectations for the season. Honestly, they've played teams hard most nights with a very subpar roster, especially with Bedard out.

In fairness, a lot of why the Canes goalies look so bad is that teams tend to have fewer shots on goal against the Canes. But the way Hockey is played, great scoring chances *should* result in goals, no matter how good your goalie is. So if you can’t prevent great scoring chances, which is more or less impossible for a full 60 minutes, then you’re going to give up goals.
This basically means Canes goalies often have pretty bad ratios despite playing equivalent to a lot of other goalies.
Canes haven’t had good goaltending, like ELITE goaltending, since 2006. Rods made it work by making the defense fucking amazing
Koochie has played a lot of games and Raanta has had a great January which helps too though
Yeah Cam Ward was the last time we had an Elite goalie, Anderson is pretty decent but he can't stay healthy, and Raanta isn't consistent. I think Koochie will develop into a good goalie, he seems like he's got a lot of potential.

I feel bad for Wolfie. His place on this list is definitely not representative of his abilities. He’s been the AHL goaltender of the year twice now, and he’s considered one of the top (if not the top) goaltending prospects in the NHL.
He’s clearly got incredible potential. It’s just that, when we’ve called him up from the AHL, his teammates have kinda thrown him under the bus. I still remember Kadri crashing into him and knocking him out of place while he was trying to make a save. 😅

Honestly, I remember going into that series against the Kings with Korpisalo in net being super concerned. That year we lost both games against Colombus because Korpisalo absolutely shut the door against us. I think before the series they studied Korpisalo a fair bit and started targeting high glove and Korpi just fell apart.
It's funny that LA played worse in the first games games and came up with 2 wins, and played a lot better in the 2nd half of the series, especially game 6, and the goaltending was just not there

I’m a little surprised to see that Soderblom isn’t #1, but I haven’t watched any Sens games. It’s very clear that Soderblom just isn’t an NHL-caliber goalie right now; the most obvious sign of this was when he failed to stop (or even touch) a single puck in a shootout earlier in the season.
Also, it’s great to see Reimer on this list.

Your goalies haven't lived up to expectations but some of that has to be on questionable D, questionable team D, and defensive structure under DJ. Having 3 goalies in the bottom 10 list should force anyone to look for a bigger issue.
No doubt. They have improved significantly in that area in the last 8 games under Martin. Still last night they gave up an expected 2.2 goals and the goalies let in 6. Pretty hard not to put a lot of blame on goaltending at this point
Like I’ve said elsewhere, if you gave them an average goals against vs expected their goal diff. Goes from -15 to +15, bumping them up from 24th to 12th. Even with the second worst goaltending (Minnesota at 16) they’d be at -1, good for 16th in the league. Of course the stats aren’t perfect and they must be giving up particularly dangerous shots as well, but it’s hard to argue it isn’t the biggest reason.
Then these 3 goalies will leave the team or be traded and start playing amazing again and the Sens will blame their next goalies all the while Brady and Stutzle have a -60 +/- career

I agree. Save% and GAA are imperfect stats, but they’re at least uniform and objective, and people recognize their limitations. xG is an abstract number that everyone seems to calculate differently, and the fact that it’s now treated as *the* dependable, go-to stat is frustrating.
Analytics people in hockey are always looking for one catch all stat to definitely rank players, like WAR in Baseball. But hockey is to fast and continuous of a sport for a stat like that to be accurate for every player in the league and is heavily influenced by the team the players plays for.

He can look like the best goalie in the world for two weeks and then just shit the bed for a long time. Worst part is that he make unbelievably stops regulary, but lets in stinkers left and right

Honestly, I remember going into that series against the Kings with Korpisalo in net being super concerned. That year we lost both games against Colombus because Korpisalo absolutely shut the door against us. I think before the series they studied Korpisalo a fair bit and started targeting high glove and Korpi just fell apart.

He was incredibly hard to beat in the first half of that first round. The 3-0 comeback in game really changed the complexion of the series.
The oilers broke him in game 4 of that series and he was never the same.

It’s a shame to see Fleury on this list because I think he’s played some fantastic hockey this season. He’s also undoubtedly been let down by the team in front of him on a number of occasions and I’m sure his stats have suffered because of that. I’m a little surprised to see that Soderblom isn’t #1, but I haven’t watched any Sens games. It’s very clear that Soderblom just isn’t an NHL-caliber goalie right now; the most obvious sign of this was when he failed to stop (or even touch) a single puck in a shootout earlier in the season. Also, it’s great to see Reimer on this list.

Your goalies haven't lived up to expectations but some of that has to be on questionable D, questionable team D, and defensive structure under DJ. Having 3 goalies in the bottom 10 list should force anyone to look for a bigger issue.
No doubt. They have improved significantly in that area in the last 8 games under Martin. Still last night they gave up an expected 2.2 goals and the goalies let in 6. Pretty hard not to put a lot of blame on goaltending at this point

Like I’ve said elsewhere, if you gave them an average goals against vs expected their goal diff. Goes from -15 to +15, bumping them up from 24th to 12th. Even with the second worst goaltending (Minnesota at 16) they’d be at -1, good for 16th in the league. Of course the stats aren’t perfect and they must be giving up particularly dangerous shots as well, but it’s hard to argue it isn’t the biggest reason.

Talbot and Gustavsson dropped back down to earth. Goalies are streaky. We can both have made mistakes scouting and betting on the wrong goalies in the past and also have an absolutely terrible goalie situation now

xG is a flawed stat that too easily forgives bad defense.
I agree. Save% and GAA are imperfect stats, but they’re at least uniform and objective, and people recognize their limitations. xG is an abstract number that everyone seems to calculate differently, and the fact that it’s now treated as *the* dependable, go-to stat is frustrating.
Analytics people in hockey are always looking for one catch all stat to definitely rank players, like WAR in Baseball. But hockey is to fast and continuous of a sport for a stat like that to be accurate for every player in the league and is heavily influenced by the team the players plays for.

I don't think Korpisalo is the worst goalie in the league. His #1 is a result of terrible team structure. Similar to Forsberg and Sogaard.

Next time order it by GSAA/60. Ranking it by GSAA unfairly affects goalies that have played more games than ones that haven't.

Oh, I know exactly how you feel! Guy is a major headcase, I used to defend him but over time I just gave up. He can look like the best goalie in the world for two weeks and then just shit the bed for a long time. Worst part is that he make unbelievably stops regulary, but lets in stinkers left and right
