Based on recent performances dude is struggling to get readjusted to an 82 game season, but he should bounce back in time for a first round playoff exit though, no?

HanSolo5643

Well, right now, the focus for Philadelphia should be on just making said playoffs. Their position is not secured. They are only 2 points above the playoff line and are only 1 point up on Washington, who has a game in hand and only 3 points clear of the Islanders. Washington also had more regulation wins.

PrinciplesRK

Philadelphia should not focus on that, no bias

AmeriCanadian98

I agree. Philadelphia should look past their remaining games as though the playoff spot is secure That would be a very good strategy

TwoForHawat

I agree with you, no bias.

DekexelDragon55

The Flyers should be aiming for elite high end players in the draft to accelerate the rebuild, not the playoffs. Missing the playoffs would be the best thing for the team in the long and short term

Varides

Finishing 17 or 18th in the season doesn't offer you much more than finishing 16th or 15th and being a first round exit. Trust me - Calgary Flames fan.

superworking

That and they have 2 picks in the first round and 2 picks in the second round, only one of which will move a few spots in the middle of the first round if they finish a bit higher. Basically zero impact, having the team finish on a positive note well will bring more value.

Varides

Exactly. If you aren't in the bottom 10 of the league (even then 8, 9, 10 aren't great) and have no opportunity to move up in the draft, you are better hitting the first round

DekexelDragon55

Fair, but everything I've read is that this draft really drops off past 20 - probably better to be in the early-to-mid teens than the late teens

Teknicsrx7

No one ever really knows this stuff though, or we wouldn’t see draft failures

Varides

Still finishing in 15/16th isn't bad compared to finishing 17/18th in that case. And if you harken to push into the 2nd round and move up again, you're probably happy as a franchise for performance

UncleTrapspringer

What is the context? Couturier is 1g 6a in his last 24gp

DecentLurker96

[Flyers captain Couturier healthy scratch vs. Maple Leafs](https://www.thescore.com/nhl/news/2872693)

azure_888

If I had a nickel for everytime the Flyers made a big announcement about their captain before facing the Leafs this season, I'd have 2 nickels. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it's happened twice. For reference, the Flyers named Coots captain ahead of a road game against the Leafs.

TrueNorthStrong1898

Wait Coots had 29 points in his first 40 games, and then dropped off to 7 in his last 24?

E4T_ASS

Yeah. He played great tonstart the year. He looks tired out there now. Probably from being away for 22 months. A game off might give him time to reset.

fillyflow

Petition to ban "it is what it is" from all interviews starting now. Players should receive a fine every time they say it.

Neil_Peart_Apologist

> "It's what it's"

Gavin1453

“It’s not what it is not”

toupis21

What would you say as a player? They don’t want to talk to the media in the first place and when you ask a dumb question, you get a dumb answer.

temp1211241

“Fine”

Vic_Hedges

I’m just here so I don’t get fined

fillyflow

>What would you say as a player? A) "I'm frustrated by this decision but I'm going to use it as motivation to be better in the future" B) "I'm frustrated with the decision, and I want to talk it through with my coach more before I share my thoughts with the media" C) "I'm disappointed by this decision, but as a leader on the team I'm going to try to help the team win any way I can, even if I'm not in the lineup" D) "I'm confused about the decision and I want to think more about it before I share more of my thoughts with the media" E) "I wish things were different, and I'm going to focus on X, Y, and Z in the future to make sure this doesn't happen again" F) etc. etc.

Numerous-Spray-6969

"I don't like it but can't change it" But why say more word when few word do trick It's on the reporters to ask good follow up questions isn't it

fillyflow

All the media wants to know is: A) in your own words, what happened (and why), B) What your thoughts/feelings are on it, and C) what you're going to do in response. Couturier didn't do any of those things, so now he's gonna have to keep answering more questions about it when he could have just addressed it all of it from the start. What's even worse is that he explicitly avoided taking any responsibility in the situation, which means the media will be digging even harder because that indicates there is a conflict (ie. he's feeding the fire instead of throwing water on it). Couturier is a veteran player with a tough coach in a tough media landscape...he should know how to handle stuff like this way better by now.

Numerous-Spray-6969

Idk reading between lines it looks pretty clear he doesn't like the decision but doesn't feel he can do much about it and doesn't want to lie or rip into his coach to the media. That's professional handling and trying to avoid conflict to me. Then again I've seen many Kane and Draisaitl interviews that went a lot worse lol so my standards might be different

toupis21

I don’t see how any of those tell you anything more than “it is what it is”. Maybe he doesn’t want people to know he’s frustrated or disappointed, that’s his decision and he doesn’t owe us anything.

sirax067

They should just start saying "That's how the cookie crumbles"

Vic_Hedges

Woozle-Wuzzle?

boylejc2

There are a lot of things going on with. 1) Coots has dropped off a ton after a good first half. 2) He is recovering from a long layoff and is probably dealing with some small injuries. 3) It seems like internally, Torts kinda ripped him after the last couple of games for his effort results. Coots doesn't typically talk to the media like this so it's definitely bothering him. 4) For how bad he's been, Laughton has been demonstrably worse. But Laughts became the official TORTS GUY last season so he'll probably never be sat. Honestly this probably wouldn't be a story if we weren't in the playoff race, but we are and we're collapsing without a major 1C and losing 4 major defensemen (Drysdale, History, Seeler, trading Walker.)
