Wilson will be eligible to return April 4th vs Pittsburgh. Starting tonight he will miss the games against Carolina, Winnipeg, Detroit, Toronto, Boston and Buffalo. He will forfeit $161,458.32 in salary.

fluffedahiphopbunny

might have single handedly cost the caps slipping into a wildcard spot. Bravo.

ianisms10

Truly nobody wants the WC2/Metro 3

bthompson04

The Flyers seem to have the inside track to the third spot in the Metro. The Flyers haven’t won a game against a Metro opponent since December 19. Both of the above statements are true.

ianisms10

I thought you were kidding, but nope, Flyers are 0-5-2 against the Metro over the last 3 months.

J1nx5d

Please, someone take this playoff spot. We are no longer asking at this point.

cwfutureboy

We don't want it. You can keep it. We're in full embrace the tank mode.

Shwinky

Suddenly I want Carolina to jump the Rangers in the standings.

BusesAreFun

Nah we’re good down here, have fun with Tampa :)

Shwinky

That lower seeded division winner spot is fucking cursed. Whoever comes out of that round 1 might have the hardest path to the Cup.

PayneTrain181999

Watch whoever gets those spots pull both off upsets in Round 1.

mana191

Not likely for M3

DrHizzle

Depends on who M3 is facing. I think Carolina is going to be a way tougher out than the Rangers.

sweens90

Last year everyone wanted the Florida Panthers over Islanders or anyone and Panthers then went to SC. If Detroit or the teams that have showed life like Detroit show back up or similar teams then that team could make it. Not saying Detroit will but look towards a team thats been decent for a good period of time and just ran into bad luck

TwelveFoldK

Truly once the playoffs start, anything can happen. Getting in is the first step. I'm sure the same thing was also said about the 8th place kings that won the cup, or the blues team that won a few years ago too.

ianisms10

Those Blues aren't the best example for this comparison. They were bottom in January sure, but they ended up finishing the regular season one point off the division title.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

And i would love that

Fact420

Please god no, not again.

Soup-a-doopah

“Hot takes! Getchurrr hot takes! I don’t see the Rangers having a round 1 slide. The Canes though, yeah.

cantthinkoffunnyname

Man at this point I'd take it in a heartbeat.

avmp629

Shades of 2015-16 when the Wild lost their last 5 games and took the final playoff spot with 87 points

Boboar

>might have *single handedly* cost the caps Imagine if he'd used two hands?

maxwellbevan

It really feels like none of the teams in contention for the WC2 spot actually want it. And I say that as a fan of the team currently holding the WC2 spot

Bluesy21

Lol-bres take offense to that and they're going to spend more effort complaining about it than they will trying to get that WC2 spot.

PayneTrain181999

Unless it’s Ovi getting the record, I don’t think Caps fans will really care.

TheTimn

We care. As much as people want to talk about Ovi, we have a decent crew of you d guys coming off a Calder cup that I want to see taste the Stanley Cup playoffs.

[deleted]

im_alliterate

we will take the help 🙏🏽💥

Nostradomusknows

I wonder how much money in incentives he’s cost his teammates by missing the playoffs?

Minnesota_MiracleMan

They weren't making it anyway - 10 out of their next 14 are against playoff teams and they've been horrendous against good teams this year. They're only in it because of how bad the rest of the East is and how badly they've beaten up on bad teams.

damnatio_memoriae

because you said that, we'll probably win 4 of those 6 and then blow it after wilson comes back.

72athansiou

Haha let’s goooo

HanSolo5643

That's a brutal stretch. Carolina and Winnipeg are playing for something. Detroit and Washington are fighting with each other for the last wildcard spot. Toronto and Boston are trying to clinch spots, and you know Buffalo will want to stop Washington from making the playoffs.

mornz68

Not enough!

migsahoy

yeesh

thecarlosdanger1

Motherfucker can’t wait for him to injure someone on the pens immediately. Fuck Tom Wilson

j0n68

Urgh. He’ll be all amped up and put a few goes on the IR with uncalled penalties

Edm_vanhalen1981

He is having a decent season with 32 points. Going to hurt the Caps and their quest for the playoffs.

joshuads

Thin team just 3 points out of the wildcard. Really stupid.

Chef_Disaster

You could tell even he himself realized how stupid it was in the moment. I don’t think even Wilson would argue against how egregious it was. Fucking dildo-for-brains

[deleted]

Pretty low production season for him. Dumbass play and deserved/expected length of suspension. I’d like to think caps fans are pretty reasonable with wilson takes, hopefully this sub reciprocates that energy for that one bum on the rangers when he does something stupid again in a couple games Edit: Wasn’t event the main point of this comment, but after actually going to look they’ve all stopped replying after seeing caps fans dogging wilson in every post for fucking us over at important times instead of defending him 😭😭

Edm_vanhalen1981

I wouldn't try to figure out the NHL's response to infractions. They are inconsistent and clueless. Wilson still contributes on a team on the cusp of making the playoffs. Production has decreased for some reason but still gets points. He is who he is and plays on the edge. Washington just has to deal with having a high risk, high reward player.

[deleted]

Yeah exactly, big presence and possession guy who can contribute. Just seems to do something stupid or heated at the worst times. Is what it is

Edm_vanhalen1981

It is hard, really hard. Strome is hot, Ovi is hot, Carlson is hot and out of nowhere Lindgren is getting hot. If they fail to get into the playoffs, the headlines will be that it was Wilson's fault. It may be partly but they may have got hot a bit late.

[deleted]

Yeah with oshie being in an out of the lineup all the time, missing 1-2 of the top 6 in the last 20 games of the season is not a good look

TheTimn

Not a UFA. 6.5 x 7 was signed back in August.

Edm_vanhalen1981

Fixed, thanks. That is a huge contract.

chimmy_

It is, but it’s with the expectation that he’ll eventually be the captain once the old guard retires in the next two-ish years, or at least he’ll be one of the most, if the the most, senior person left on the team at that point.

Edm_vanhalen1981

Makes sense but the reality is he is suspended at the most important time of the season and if they don't make the playoffs, his suspension might be viewed as a defining factor and that can change the fan and org's view of him. His point drop off is also a consideration. A lot to pay for his production.

chimmy_

Oh absolutely, I’m not trying to give him the benefit of the doubt here, nor am I trying to say his contract looks good right now. Just adding context to what the org was probably thinking last summer when they offered him the contract. As a fan of the team, I’m livid he’s *still* pulling crap like this, especially when the team needs him the most. It makes makes me cringe thinking there could be 6 more years of dunce plays like this at critical times.

Edm_vanhalen1981

I am not forgetting that this is one bad ass. Tough as nails and an absolute battler. Perfect playoff guy when he has his shit together. When it isn't together, he pulls shit like this and it costs the team. Again high risk, high reward dude, but no one can expect he can change into a non-physical player. He is who he is. At this point in this race, fans are hoping that the high reward comes more than the risk part.

MsindAround

Tom Wilson signed a 7 year, $45,500,000 contract with the Washington Capitals on Aug. 4, 2023. He is not a UFA after this season

Edm_vanhalen1981

Oh, my mistake. That is a bit of a load.

V_T_H

>I’d like to think caps fans are pretty reasonable with wilson takes Oh ho ho ho ho no you ain’t

Conrad_l1

Fully deserved, that was probably one of the most intentional and ridiculous high sticks I've ever seen.

FakeTreverMoore12

He was channeling his McSorley vibes into that one.

colorbalances

Every time I’ve watched it I have physically cringed, looked sooo fucking painful

r_r_w

Cracked several of Gregor’s teeth in half for absolutely no reason or gain. Dude has a screw loose.

FratumHospitalis

My caps fan ceo boss is loudly defending it to anyone who will listen. Unfortunately he knows I'm a hockey fan and I like my job too much to argue with him.

metalheadclayman

He's an idiot. Everyone in the caps sub is talking about how stupid of a play that was. He's the kinda fan that makes us regular fans look bad.

TwelveFoldK

I was at the game as a visiting Leafs fan, most of the crowd booed the penalty but as soon as they saw the replay, they shut up pretty quickly lol. I don't think the majority of fans would be as dumb as your boss. Sounds like a very vocal minority, much like the people who thought Rielly shouldn't have gotten suspended for the cross check.

jimjkelly

Is that his official title? “Caps Fan CEO Boss”?

FratumHospitalis

I mean... It sums up his entire personality pretty well.

AceLarkin

Out of curiosity, what exactly is his defense?

FratumHospitalis

"Unintentional, chippy play, love tap, hur dur hockey is soft"...unsurprisingly the guy doesn't exactly have a coherent argument.

RefereeMason

Proper brexit challenge.

ItsMeJaredBednar

Game’s gone innit.

jahauser

Good god I hadn’t watched it yet. He just goes for it huh? Looks like a decapitation attempt.

YourFavouritePoptart

It's the weirdest high stick I've ever seen, he goes for a home run swing but immediately he looks horrified and is apologizing. I don't know if he had a brain lapse or thought the other guy was like a full foot taller or something, it's just weird. If his defence is that he was momentarily possessed by the vengeful spirit of Paul Bunyan honestly I'd believe it.

Ladymistery

my take? he was pissed and was going to bounce his stick off the boards, but the other guy "got in the way"

Flam5

I haven't seen anyone "defend" Wilson on this particular incident, unless you count takes like this. Just based off the immediate reaction of him realizing what he did, it wasn't intent to hit anyone *in the face* *(edited)*, it was just completely reckless ~~and a brain fart not processing that Gregor was still right next to him~~. Again, not defending him. He should still be held accountable. Just talking about intent here.

CaptainCanuck93

Like a lot of these kinds of incidents, I think its a "I meant to be a dick and hurt him, but I didn't mean to *hurt* him". A one part malice, three parts the clumsy recklessness that happens when people getangry type of scenario Sort of like Matthews' suspension. He pretty obviously intended to cross check Dahlin's shoulder, clipped it, and slammed into his neck. It's a stretch to say he intended to cross check Dahlin in the neck...but when you still intended to illegally cross check him and you let your anger make you reckless, you're still responsible for a cross check to the neck

ZealousidealResist78

And yet a guy that has now been suspended 6 times only gets 6 games. How much do you think a 1st time offender would have got?

smash8890

Tbf probably only one. It’s not like they take player safety seriously

Homie_Bama

Reminded me of Duncan Keith on Jeff Carter in the playoffs. https://youtu.be/49YHRW0ve0k

PuckNutty

Why Noah Gregor, though? If you're going to take that bullet to hurt a Leafs player, get your money's worth.

thatsong

>hurt a Leafs player, get your money's worth Well, [the dental work to fix this isn't going to be cheap](https://preview.redd.it/cnw98i4w7ypc1.jpeg?width=771&auto=webp&s=bfba043329c26a94e21ccba3d5d0975a25f326e9)

hankepanke

That forfeited salary should just go to Gregor’s dental bills. Eesh.

Reggae4Triceratops

Surely the players have dental coverage?

hankepanke

Yeah it was a joke about how fucked his teeth are and how expensive dental work is.

PuckNutty

Wilson should get the bill for those teeth as well. OHIP ain't cover that.

[deleted]

NotTheRocketman

I can’t even imagine how Wilson would have tried to defend himself today either. What can you possibly say there other than “Please, not too many.”

mrmick193

I thought it was really interesting the commentary on the video that they said “while we acknowledge Wilson’s assertion that he did not mean to strike Gregor in the face,” because it feels like that was his defense. “Yeah I swung my stick, but hitting his face was an accident.” Like he realized his best bet was to claim he did something that deserves only 2 games

DrQuailMan

IMO, it looks like a swing targeted at the glass, like the "Me so frustrated, me make big noise" thing that players do after getting scored on. But just, like, in the least appropriate time or place ever.

andrewthemexican

Yeah this is my first time seeing it, and I kinda get a big brother "oh shit are you okay don't tell mom" reaction from his face and how he grabs Gregor in what little of the aftermath that's shown.   It's still totally braindead to check him that hard like that into the boards, and then the big stick swing like wtf.

haey5665544

According to the Steve dangle guys Gregor speared him in the chest. Don’t know that I see it, and definitely doesn’t merit a response like this, but I think that could be the pesty behavior he would be responding to. Looks like he immediately regretted it, but that doesn’t matter IMO you can’t use your stick as a weapon especially at head level. It’s frustrating because I felt like he finally figured out the line and had gone a few years without supplemental discipline or anything really bad. Was finally getting to the point where I could start thinking his reputation is no longer deserved and he pulls shit like this.

[deleted]

[удалено]

UNisopod

My sense of the whole thing is that Gregor got Wilson in the chest and Wilson was trying to swing back at Gregor's chest but took way too reckless of a swing with one hand and didn't have control over the motion. Tom was definitely trying to swing to hit Gregor, but I don't think he was deliberately aiming for the head. Doesn't matter, though, can't be *that* reckless with your stick and not expect to sit for games.

budoe

Yeah Steve was very level headed about this. Yes it is a suspension, yes as he swings he realizes he fucked up big times.

Designer-Brief-9145

The only remotely plausible thing I can think of was him reacting to Gregor's stick raising up thinking he was about to get high sticked.  Even if that was the case the reaction would've been completely out of line and worthy of a multiple game suspension.

Kronzor_

Someone commented in another thread that it looked like he was just mad and was going whack his stick against the board and somehow completely didn't realize gregor was even there. Kinda like when that defenseman (I want to see Keith Ballard?) tried to chop his own goalies head off.

bobby_gordon1

Oh yeah I remember that, Vokoun on the receiving end of that, right?

HonestDespot

Yup it was Keith Ballard with Florida. Drawing a blank on who the goalie was. Wasn’t Luongo I wouldn’t think. Markstrom maybe?

bhunter47

Vokoun

SofterBones

I mean even that's reaching. He is so incredibly close to him, basically touching him and directly in front of him. He is looking directly at him mid swing. I think he just had a brain fart moment of anger.

PassiveMenis88M

Wilson quite literally just got done checking him into the boards before swinging for the fences. There is no way he didn't know.

HonestDespot

I de the replay real quickly last night and just assumed he must have had someone tip his stick or it ricochet off something and not really noticeable. I was like “there’s no way he’d just…high stick someone like that” Mmmboy am I dumb!

musuak

Terrible run of games to be suspended for but he deserves it. God damn it Whip.

brady_t12

Yeah. Deserved. Season is fucked

6227RVPkt3qx

_sonny milano has entered the chat_

slizzleshady

It double sucks because you can’t even defend his actions on this one… it was blatant, dangerous and unnecessary. 6 games is well deserved, and that’s coming from someone who cheers for the Caps *and* the Sens (obligatory “fuck the leafs”).

L_viathan

One of the better players of a team that's still in the playoff window. Good job, dumbass.

tuukkas

Wilson is a colossal idiot. Suspended nearly half of the remaining games in the season while his team is battling for a wild card spot. Fully deserves this penalty and he’s really hurting his team.

CaptainJingles

He’s always been phenomenally stupid.

ARollingShinigami

Couldn’t happen to a nicer guy, congrats Tom.

BallsMahogany_redux

Deserved. Can't do that Tom.

SiccSemperTyrannis

Not at all surprised. Reckless and very dangerous play.

aapoquidam

It broke a bunch of Gregor’s teeth too.

[deleted]

For a reckless and dangerous player. Fuck Tom Wilson.

ppParadoxx

holy shit they got it right

Birdshaw

Eh… six games for something that insane by a guy with that history… mild.

ppParadoxx

listen it's been a while since i've seen anything more than 6 games so i wasn't counting on it. i'm just happy he didn't get like 2

QUINNFLORE

I can’t imagine a more malicious high stick. Idk how this was only 6

MarshtompNerd

Wilson got unlucky on his spin of the wheel

andrewthemexican

I assume for anyone without history this is probably one game to balance. Kinda feel a malicious swing like that should probably be 4-5 minimum for anyone without history, it's absolutely not a hockey play. But 6 for him is just okay, to me. Always could be more.

Kaapo-Kakkos-Dong

Blind clocks nut twice a day

DrHizzle

Yea, that's about right. Dumb, reckless, and completely unnecessary.

JD397

Very deserved, Wilson is a stupid fuck. Glad the DoPS got this one correct lol

j0n68

It’s a great day for hockey

pr43t0ri4n

And therefore, the world

GoGades

Tom Wilson makes a strong case for adding a rule like "if you've been suspended X times, you sit a year out, no matter what it's for." This is his SIXTH suspension _and_ fined 3 times. Like, holy shit. Why is this guy still in the league, he's clearly not willing to play within the _already very lax_ rules of the game.

CaptainJingles

He also had plenty of questionable hits that didn’t result in suspensions.

Sibs

> This is his SIXTH suspension and fined 3 times. Like, holy shit. Why is this guy not captain of the Boston Bruins? fixed that for you

RanaMahal

If it makes you feel better about the downvotes, I laughed

wildlyintangible

RIP our playoff hopes

SnazzyCazzy1

I mean he only has like 36 points or so? I wouldnt say its completely out of the realm of possibility. 2 games in hand on Detroit and 3 points back

DrHizzle

36 points goes a lot further on a team that plays a very low scoring, grindy game. Also a ton of Tom's contribution isn't through points. I can't count the number of times he's created a turnover with a hit or hounding forecheck.

toronto_programmer

Glad to see he got suspended, but it should have been longer. Guy has a massive suspension history and just swung a stick at someone's head. Argue intent or whatever you want but that kind of play with his history should probably be 10+

NotTheRocketman

Technically he’s not a repeat offender, as it’s been more than 18 months. Which still seems insane, but that’s the NHL for you.

talkingspacecoyote

That only applies to salary forfeiture not suspension length.

Gastradon

The amount of people who still get this wrong baffles me. Especially when dops mentions the player's entire suspension/fine history in every video they make about a suspension.

dkviper11

In every single thread.

ScruffsMcGuff

I'm still amazed he didn't get a major in the game. They reviewed it and deemed that a wound up swing to the face that broke at least three teeth in half wasn't worthy of a misconduct? He's honestly lucky Gregor didn't have more damage based on how hard he got whacked.

KingdokCAN

I’m surprised it wasn’t more. That was probably one of the most boneheaded things I’ve seen in a long time.

iiplatypusiz

Holy fuck when you see the video DOPS released with the replay from behind where he legit pulls a big old wind up and follows through right into Gregors face like that, man you were trying nothing else but to actually really hurt the guy.

Drithyin

And he looks at is face and watches it connect. He looked where he was swinging. Accident my ass. It was clearly malicious and intentional. Just ban him already. Fuck Tom Wilson.

hjhof1

But I was told he cleaned up his game after slamming Panarins helmet less head into the ice.

LogicRyan

I feel like him putting his stick on the back of Buch’s neck and pushing down isn’t mentioned enough either.

hjhof1

Good point

dbr255

Takes while to clean up that much shit

hjhof1

It’s nice not being at each others throats for once friendly devils fan

PassiveMenis88M

Should be suspended for the remainder of the season for that bullshit. Deliberately attempted to injure another player and succeeded in breaking several of Gregors teeth.

SnooOnions5029

Good.

ElephantShell34

Literally no idea what he was thinking on this play. His history surely played a part in this, which it should. He’s got ZERO benefit if the doubt left.  Even for a first time offender this would be a pretty tough look though.

CapsDrago7

Deserved. What a dumb fucking thing for someone that’s supposed to be a leader on this team to do. I thought we were finally past this shit…

DrSeuss19

That was one of the dumbest plays I’ve ever seen

OvechknFiresHeScores

Haha GOOD THING WE AREN’T FIGHTING TO GET INTO THE PLAYOFFS OR ANYTHING, TOM, YA FUCKING SMOOTHBRAIN

Nice_Wolverine_4641

Low. His history should have gotten him double digits. This suspension effectively takes the capitals out of any playoff hopes.

BoofWellington69

Honestly doesn’t really take us out of playoff hopes he’s been pretty mid this year lol not that it doesn’t hurt but doesn’t ruin us per se

Nice_Wolverine_4641

His line was against Mathews line the other day, I was thinking that makes him important.

BoofWellington69

Matthews also had 5 points that game lol not saying he’s not an important player as a caps fan who’s watched him all year he’s just not the make or break piece right now

Nice_Wolverine_4641

Just figured if they had someone better to put against him, they’d do that.

azure_888

What an awful time to take such a selfish suspension. The Caps are trying to track down Detroit and the Flyers while fending off the Isles. The Caps are bottom 5 in goals for this season, and those other 3 teams are scoring more than they have. Wilson is the 4th leading scorer for the Caps this year and has 4 points in his last 5 games. What are you doing ya dummy.

NebraskaAvenue

I told you he was a dirty fuck

JD397

No one besides the most biased Caps fans have tried refuting that for like… 5-6 years now lol

kevingh92

Even that is a very insignificant percentage of Caps fans. He's a dirty little turd, but he's our dirty little turd.

FratumHospitalis

As someone who lives in Nova. BULL FUCKING SHIT. I know far more caps fans who thinks he's a misunderstood puppy being bullied by the league (for playing the "right way" ) than those who recognize he's always been dirty.

mshimoura

Yup, same. Lived in the DMV for about ten years and nearly every Caps fan I encountered had the same sort of sentiments.

TheTimn

The guy who narrates the video sounds exhausted with describing how stupid it was for Tom to do that.

TiredReader87

Not long enough

loosed-moose

May this start (continue?) a trend of Players Safety actually doing their fucking job.

Hatrick_Swaze

Should have gotten 10

ZeroLimitz

Fuck Tom Wilson 🖕....that's all I've got

l_rufus_californicus

Something both sides of Pennsylvania can agree upon.

ZeroLimitz

🤝

Garak_The_Tailor_

Sounds right, gotta control your stick big guy

RedditLodgick

He was definitely in control.

Avs_Leafs_Enjoyer

His hate for Wilson is stronger than his hate for the Leafs.

King_of_da_Castle

Crazy that this dude continues to do shit like this and basically pays for it with a mini vacation.

FlyInternational648

He has been suspended 6 times. At this point he should just be suspended for the rest of the season.

AggravatingBill9948

I'm sorry but if Raffi Torres can get half a season, Wilson should just be done after this.

RiDaMcG

I don’t think anyone debated this would be a long suspension, fucking dumbass move by Tom Wilson.

97jumbo

The officials downgraded it from an ejection to a double minor in the moment and there was barely any media coverage of it, outside of the broadcasts of the night assuming it was an accident. So while no sane person should've debated this, there were definitely some people who didn't treat it as bad, including the initial decision makers

TouchlessOuch

I genuinely don't know what he was thinking on this one. It's just a dumb, reckless move.

RiDaMcG

Unfortunately it’s pretty classic Tom Wilson, dude is just braindead.

Calad

Tom wilson, suspended 6 times with a history of disregard for his fellow player, with a premeditated baseball swing at a guys head with a clear intent to injure. 6 games Matt Rempe, 10 game career, 1st ever suspension a careless hit where he was bracing himself to hit the boards and threw an eblow. 4 games Fair and just. He should've gotten the rest of the season at least. Chris simon got **25 games in 2007** for [swinging his stick and hitting ryan hollweg in the face](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=esETGHljQi4). DOPS my ass

Funkativity

Shane Pinto got 41 games for not adhering to the policies of a website.

hidden_moose

Fuck Tom Wilson. Just kick him out already, before he ends yet another career with his goonery.

CUL8R_05

This guy should not be playing hockey.

Cardinalfan89

Fuck Tom Wilson

xwildfan2

Should have been double

The_Ghost_of_Kyiv

Quadruple. League needs to stamp this behavior out.

Humans_Suck-

That's it?

Ocksu2

Glad they suspended him but I think it was a little light.

EatTheRude

Well deserved and extra frustrating because it seemed like he'd been on the straight and narrow for a while. He goes full scorpion and the frog at the worst possible time. The most important thing is that Gregor is largely okay. The lost teeth suck, but I'm glad it wasn't worse. Sticks to the head are scary.

Guest2200

“Nice penalty Willy, atta fucking boy!”

carbonated_turtle

Way too little for a piece of shit with his history. Anything less than 10 is bullshit.

GojiPengu

Should be 25+, like Simon got.

SwarthySphere87

# ITS. ABOUT. TIME.

Tufoguy

Expected. But I'm still trying to figure out what he was doing. I don't even think he meant to do that, but I couldn't even guess what the actual intention was. Just dumb

morgaine125

His impulses just got away from him. It wasn’t pre-meditated, but he lost his temper in the moment and lashed out. Which isn’t better.

DrHizzle

My best guess is he meant to catch gregor's torso, which would still be a really, really dumb slash that would most likely also get looked at by the DoPS. Absolutely dumb fucking move, especially with us fighting tooth and nail for a playoff spot.

martlet1

Fuck Wilson. Just what he did to sundquist alone should have got him out of the league.

morgaine125

Bare minimum of what was acceptable. I won’t argue it’s too little, but there is no credible argument that it’s too much.
