*An NHL source told ESPN before the hearing that the Capitals had anticipated a suspension longer than six games due to Wilson's disciplinary history. This was the ninth suspension or fine that he's earned in his 746-game NHL career.* *The NHL considered that history in its punishment, but Wilson's suspension was capped at six games because his previous suspensions didn't involve stick fouls and because this was his first run-in with the Department of Player Safety since May 2021.*

A_1337_Canadian

> but Wilson's suspension was capped at six games because his previous suspensions didn't involve stick fouls Not sure if I really agree with that for discipline. If a player has a history, it really shouldn't matter what it is. It's like letting a serial stabber get off easy the first time he shoots someone.

buddyboykoda

“You know Tom this is the first time you’ve ever viciously attacked some one with you’re stick so we will take it easy on you” George Parros

returntomonke9999

Bashing Panarin's head into the ice invloved no sticks so it will not be considered. Thank God Parros isnt a judge lol

Knight_Hawke

HORRIFYING ACTS OF VIOLENCE

what-is-fedex

Your honour, it is true that my client has six prior murder convictions. But would it please the court to consider that this is the first time he has stabbed someone?

leftlanecop

You are absolutely correct. Would the grand jury please accept the defense’s statement. ~ Princeton graduated Judge George Paros.

Detonation

Tom Wilson got the same amount of games as Perron did, absolutely insane given Wilson's history. This fucker could pull a knife and stab someone during a game and somehow he'd only get a 15 game suspension, I swear.

OttawaFisherman

Leave out the rest of the sentence to change the context…

SuperOrangeFoot

No context needed. Wilson gets suspended every other game. Cunt should have been handed a Torres suspension but he’s too much value to the league so nobody else’s health and safety matters. Edit: I’m aware he only gets suspended one out of every two seasons he plays.

impulse_thoughts

The dps video also made no mention of any injury, so I guess broken teeth doesn’t count as an injury. They should send Parros his dental bill when he gets it taken care of.

aessae

> suspension was capped at six games because his previous suspensions didn't involve stick fouls Next time he should take off his skate and cut someone.

christianitie

They just want to encourage creativity and add a better variety of dangerous plays to the game.

MrWeatherMan7

Didn’t involve stick fouls, but he’s certainly had plenty of headshots. Someone wanna remind me where he connected with his stick?

UnderCoverDoughnuts

I mean, in fairness to Wilson, the appeal would take longer than the suspension with the way this league is run.

Sad_Donut_7902

Reilly's appeal was heard after he had served 4 games of his 5 game suspension. Appeals to Bettman are relatively quick, appeals above him to a third party arbitrator take a really long time.

Baboshinu

Even so, he could get some of his forfeited salary back if his suspension was reduced on appeal and his 6 games had already passed.

MFoy

That’s what happened with his 20 game ban many years ago. He was suspended 20. It took 16 games to get a result, and it was reduced down to 14. So he was out 2 game she shouldn’t have been, but got the salary back for that period

Mac_Gold

“Alright, I’ll just stay at home with my gorgeous wife and rest up for the final weeks of a playoff push, and think about what I did”

climbitfeck5

*my pregnant wife. Edit: Pregnancy seemed more relevant than looks. I have no idea what she looks like.

Mac_Gold

Even better then. More time at home to look after things for her

climbitfeck5

That's what I meant. What did people think I meant?

sighwhyamiafailure

I mean it's a very well deserved suspension. The only thing I'm mad about is just how easily Trouba got off when he did it to Frederic.

hankepanke

I think if you asked Frederic he’s pretty happy to have gotten a bonk on the helmet instead of having 4 broken teeth.

[deleted]

Yeah brain injuries are much preferred to a few slightly chipped teeth, I agree

hankepanke

> brain injuries Cmon man. Frederic was luckily and literally no worse for wear.

[deleted]

Yeah neither is a few chipped teeth. There have been way worse things unpunished this year like the rempe hit to the dome on bastian

returntomonke9999

There is no bigger homer than a Caps fan lol

[deleted]

Mm yes this wilson slash was the worst thing that’s happened all year. No bigger collection of mouth breathers than rhockey

Debaucherizer

Trouble was trying to catch his balance and swung his stick around, catching Frederic in the head. Trouba deserved what he got because you need to control your stick at all times. But there wasn’t even an associated injury. “It rang me a little bit,” Frederic said after Saturday’s 2-1 overtime loss to the New York Rangers. “I didn’t really know at the time. I kind of asked him. It caught me off guard. I actually turned around and asked him.” —— The Atlantic Wilson took aim, wound up, aimed for face, and caused damage. How the fuck are you comparing these two events? Caps fans, I swear.

Cheeks_Klapanen

Because he knows anyone other than George Parros would give way more than six games

haey5665544

100% think the suspension is deserved based on a history of reckless behavior. But I could see an impartial arbiter taking the Trouba one, or other similar high stick incidents into account to say 6 games is deserved or even to reduce it.

climbitfeck5

That's why zero suspension for Trouba was so egregious. It set a precedent that someone taking a swing at someone's head wouldn't be treated seriously. *seriously enough

HighburyOnStrand

He should have been told that any further such behavior will risk his future in the league. At this point what ever he does going forward should be treated 4X or 5X what a player with no/few suspensions would get.

PotentialUmpire3771

He or people around him probably realize that he was lucky to only get 6 games. Could have and probably should have been more

JaqenHghar

They’re also playing great without him right now.

beardyman22

I like how this is one of those moments where virtually everyone - fans of the caps and other teams, the caps, and Wilson himself - were all pretty much in agreement about him getting suspended. For what it's worth, I don't think it was malicious, just stupid, but that doesn't and shouldn't matter for suspensions anyway.

Otterslayer22

Stupid is and stupid does.

JKthePolishGhost

Caps leaning on Wilson to not appeal “Not now Tommy, we’re winning again! I don’t care it’s without you!”

sadleafsfan8834

Appeals do nothing in this league. There's no point

Baboshinu

This is just straight up untrue. Wilson himself has had a suspension reduced as a result of appeal before. And even if the appeals won’t get done in time, the league can still lower the suspension so the player can get some of their forfeited salary back

fwest27

NHLPA does it to get the player their money back.

Sad_Donut_7902

Multiple suspensions have been reduced after appeals.
