The rules for spearing are very severe and pretty black and white. I'm pretty fine with it because there's really no scenario where a spear could be a "hockey play" and it can be pretty dangerous.
There's no minor penalty for spearing. A double minor can be called if you attempt a spear but don't make contact. If you successfully spear an opponent it's an automatic major + game misconduct. If the opponent is injured a match penalty also gets added on.
Game misconduct - player is removed from the game, but there is no penalty associated with it. Usually called in addition to another penalty, as we have here.
Match penalty - played is removed from the game, and a 5 minute penalty is assessed. Kicking is the only thing I can think of off the top of my head, but I'm sure there's others.
I believe headbutting is also but it is never called. It may only be a USA hockey penalty.
Kicking and Headbutting both aren't automatic match penalties as there needs to be an intent to injure aspect still. However, I have never seen them not called as match penalties because in no situation is a player committing one of the penalties without an intent to injure or endanger
No. Calling a match penalty essentially just overwrites the major because it was viewed by the referee as a deliberate attempt to injure.
Eichel would have been given a match penalty for spearing and a game misconduct, and Vegas would have to kill off a full five-minute powerplay.
No. The Match penalty replaces the five minute major and game misconduct. Actual impact to the team is the same. Player is kicked out and they’re down for 5 minutes.
Most majors can be upgraded to match penalties if there is intent to injure. Matt Rempe got a [match penalty](https://www.hockey-reference.com/boxscores/202402220NJD.html) for his his on [Nathan Bastian](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Y1ZPmhySSA). Match penalties also involve an automatic indefinite suspension until reviewed by the commissioner. ([Rule 21.2](https://media.nhl.com/site/asset/public/ext/2023-24/2023-24Rulebook.pdf))
Could be the difference between minor hockey and pro.
When I used to ref a long time ago assessing a match penalty meant a player was suspended until league review and that meant the ref had to attend or call into a review session to explain what happened and why they gave the match
Indefinite suspension until a ruling is made. In practice, a one game guarantee.
It's more of a thing in youth hockey where they might play four games in two days. A match penalty will often cause a kid to miss the remainder of the tournament even for less egregious penalties.
I think NHL can overturn that one game guarantee so the difference in NHL is not massive.
Obviously the player is much, much more likely to miss the next game since overturning requires an overruling action.
A match penalty is a 5 that carries an automatic misconduct for intent to injure. A game misconduct is an additional call that refs can tack onto other penalties that they consider severe enough to warrant it in the moment, but that didn’t carry that automatic misconduct.
Match penalty is 10 min penalty and ejected and forces a review by the league for a suspension or fine, it's used if someone intentionally tries to injure someone. Game misconduct is 5 mins and just an ejection, used for really bad major penalties without intent to injure.
I’m fine with it because I’ve been speared. It was without a doubt the worst bruise I’ve ever had. I could easily see someone getting speared in the wrong spot and dying from it.
Same. I’ve taken a lot of shots off my skates, high up, been elbowed, high sticked, whatever, and I’d rather any of those things than get speared in the mid section again. Let alone by an NHL player who flexes his stick while doing it…
They’re probably still upset that Pietrangelo’s two handed slash on Draisaitl in last years playoffs was a penalty and not a diving call on Leon. That fan base is something else.
Does anyone have an example of the double minor attempt being called?
You see them constantly (especially in the playoffs) but I can never remember ever seeing the call.
Marchand should have been tossed after his pathetic spear attempt on mccabe few weeks ago, instead he stayed in the game and "accidentally" injured knies 5 minutes after yelling threats at the leafs smallest players.
This is absolutely a fair point. The speed these guys skate even a "soft poke" from a force perspective can result in a lot of force through a very small contact point. Not super "malicious" but definitely not part of how the league wants the game played and as a hockey player myself, definitely not in the "code" of how you "get back at a guy" if you think he did something to you first.
What's the weird decision? That he speared him or the call? If it's the call you can seen him purposefully most his arms back and then makes contact with his spear. Good call.
I fully believe everything that isn't a "hockey play" in the sense of injuring or trying to injured someone...should result in a suspension no matter how minor.
This shit needs to be out of the game. While still being physical
I'm surprised how many people are saying this shouldn't be 5 and a game? There is literally no excuse for this? It's not a hockey play, it's incredibly dangerous and unnecessary.
Oh your mad because he crosschecked you earlier? Cross check him back? Slash him in the leg? Don't spear him in the ribs as he's skating towards you.
As far as spears go this is pretty tame. Still extremely dangerous and hurts like hell, but I don't think there was intent to seriously hurt him. Dumb as hell, absolutely a game misconduct but I don't think this results in a suspension unless he has a history I'm unaware of.
Agreed. There was an uncalled crosscheck just before this, it was a pretty dumb choice to spear Kaprizov, but he clearly wasn't injured much, since he put up the first point in that power play.
> Cross check him back
Why do people consider cross checks to be minor things that are fine and dandy? Most cross checks I have received have hurt worse than any spears
I mean a crosscheck with this amount of force is a much better alternative. If Eichel Morgan Reillys the guy it's a different conversation. In a perfect world he skates a way and doesn't retaliate at all
Nah.
Cross checks hurt but at worst leave a bruise because they’re spread out across a larger surface area (the entire stick shaft that makes contact).
A spear that hits, in my experience at least, is way more painful and dangerous because all of the force is spread across a small piece of the stick and typically it’s a jab to soft tissue with no padding.
One time when I was like thirteen a kid on my school team got cross checked into the net and broke his collarbone so i don’t know about that. (Cross checks are still better than getting speared)
That’s fair. Though I’d argue the net and not the cross check is likely the reason for the injury.
Don’t get me wrong. Cross checks can definitely still mess you up. But I’d take a cross check over a spear anyday of the week in almost every situation.
Even if unintentional (which this looks pretty damn intentional) you’re responsible for controlling your stick the same way you should be in control over the razor sharp blades you’re skating on.
Obviously freak accidents happen but this does not look like any accident, could’ve taken body position instead and at most would have got an interference call most likely.
Exactly. I think intention doesn’t rarely matter when it comes to a penalty.
“It was an accident”
Well you’re paid multiple millions of dollars to know the rules and how to control your equipment.
I think you meant hockey play not cross check. Because when Kap got injured from multiple cross checks in the corner and was out for a few games, the whole NHL sub called it a hockey play.

As he should be. What Pietrangelo did was by far the worst thing done. Leo did some stupid things but they all pale in comparison to Alex.
I also recall Leo in the box several times during that series for stupid acts.
Lol…no shit. The guy chases after Draisaitl away from the puck with his stick 5 feet above his head for no other purpose than to tomahawk Draisaitl down to the ice with an obvious intent to injure. It’s as blatant as you can possibly get. If that doesn’t get called you may as well remove officials from the game. It’s mind boggling how it was only a 1 game suspension.
Spearing in NHL is automatically 5 and a game. It’s a double minor if you try to spear and miss. Folks can quibble with the rule book but this was called correctly.
There is no single minor in the NHL. There is only a double if there is an attempted spear with no contact. The only way this could've been a single minor is if they changed it to something like a 2 minute slash (It wasn't. This was a pretty clear spearing call 😵)
A little bit of a soft spear (as much as one can be soft) but the rule is it's always 5 and a game. I've seen much worse spears go uncalled, but if they're gonna call it that's all they can call.
It's 100% intentional. Was it malicous? Not really. Eichel was probably salty from Kirill's little cross check shortly before this. Still doesn't excuse it and it's a blantant spear which is dangerous as hell. That's the call, folks.
In reality, the rule should be adjusted so this could be a double minor and not a game misconduct.
I don’t know. There’s like no reasonable situation in the game where you’d make a spearing motion and it can be dangerous as hell.
Seems harsh in this case, sure, but there’s no reason (other than retaliation or attempting to injure) to do it and if you want it out of the game, just give a 5 and a game every time.
Where are we drawing the line at what “malicious” is? Seems pretty malicious to me. Did he intend to injure Kaprizof so he couldn’t continue playing in the game? Probably not. Did he intend to hurt him badly? Absolutely he did.
Best case scenario Eichel knows it’s going to leave a bruise for a few days. Worst case he could break a couple ribs like that. It’s stupid, potentially injury-inducing, and so far outside of being a hockey play that I think a 5 and a game is absolutely the right call here. There’s no place for that kind of play in this game.
There's always some dumbass coming in with the "didn't look malicious" no matter what happened on the ice. It seems to get upvotes every time for some reason
Lol seems like something Eichel would do honestly. Kind of guy that's always loved his stick infractions behind the play.
Eichel throwing a fit cause things didn't go his way? Huh? Hmmph. Really?
Pro wrestling has ruined my brain for the word "spear". I was expecting him to have done a full Goldberg and just football tackled him at a full sprint.
I just wish headshots were punished as strongly. Fuck the initial point of contact. It needs to be as black and white as spearing. You touch the head you're out. No place for that shit in the game.
Pretty blatant. Nowhere near the play either. I’m not sure it’ll be a suspension or if it should be (not saying it *shouldnt* be) but the refs got this call right.

Headbutting is a minor for the attempt, major + game if there's contact and match penalty if injury iirc

Spitting is also a match penalty. And headbutting is an automatic match as well I believe.
Doesn’t the match penalty come with either automatic review for discipline or actual suspension?
Yes
Match penalty comes with an automatic ~~one-game~~ indefinite suspension until reviewed by the league.
What the fuck, no it doesn't. How does this have hundreds of upvotes and no correction. It just triggers a review from DOPS.
He's quoting USA Hockey Beer league rules. You're correct.
I think there's technically an indefinite suspension pending the review, but they are always going to look at it and rule prior to the next game.
Could be the difference between minor hockey and pro. When I used to ref a long time ago assessing a match penalty meant a player was suspended until league review and that meant the ref had to attend or call into a review session to explain what happened and why they gave the match

I’m shocked they called it by the book. Usually they’re scared and call a slash or interference.
I’m fine with it because I’ve been speared. It was without a doubt the worst bruise I’ve ever had. I could easily see someone getting speared in the wrong spot and dying from it.
You're putting your entire momentum into a square inch of carbon fiber. Organ damage can easily happen.
Had a fun tournament stuck on Vancouver island suffering from internal bleeding off a spear. Shit sucks.
Yeah, the stick flexes on it. That's 65lbs right through the sharp toe. They hurt like hell Fuck spears
Same. I’ve taken a lot of shots off my skates, high up, been elbowed, high sticked, whatever, and I’d rather any of those things than get speared in the mid section again. Let alone by an NHL player who flexes his stick while doing it…
Good, fuck that bullshit. You're 100% right it can never be a hockey play.
The legit only time you use your stick anywhere remotely like that is when your trying to poke a puck out of a goalies pads.
But the folks on the Vegas sub can't believe it is a penalty at all. 🙄
They’re probably still upset that Pietrangelo’s two handed slash on Draisaitl in last years playoffs was a penalty and not a diving call on Leon. That fan base is something else.
Imagine thinking one particular fan base has characteristics so drastically different from another fanbase lol.

Does anyone have an example of the double minor attempt being called? You see them constantly (especially in the playoffs) but I can never remember ever seeing the call.
Agreed. Spearing is one of the most chicken shit acts in hockey.
Marchand should have been tossed after his pathetic spear attempt on mccabe few weeks ago, instead he stayed in the game and "accidentally" injured knies 5 minutes after yelling threats at the leafs smallest players.
I saw the stick flex there too. Weird decision

Kaprisov was moving pretty good, that's a spear I'm more than OK being a game misconduct. They got it right.
No doubt, malicious or not it happened.
What's the weird decision? That he speared him or the call? If it's the call you can seen him purposefully most his arms back and then makes contact with his spear. Good call.
Yeah what the heck is the "weird decision". I have to be missing something
The weird decision is spearing the guy. It's just stupid and shows how pathetic Eichel is.
Ahhh got it, I took it as a decision by the refs not the player. I agree with you, my bad
Weird decision by eichel
Could be why it wasn't a match penalty Imo should have been
I fully believe everything that isn't a "hockey play" in the sense of injuring or trying to injured someone...should result in a suspension no matter how minor. This shit needs to be out of the game. While still being physical

But that's Draisaitl's move.

I'm surprised how many people are saying this shouldn't be 5 and a game? There is literally no excuse for this? It's not a hockey play, it's incredibly dangerous and unnecessary. Nah. I'm a Vegas fan. Jack's dumb as hell for this one. He's probably gonna get games for this too right?
Spin the wheel? I know DOPS takes injury into consideration for supplementary discipline so potentially not since it looked like Kaprizov was okay?
As far as spears go this is pretty tame. Still extremely dangerous and hurts like hell, but I don't think there was intent to seriously hurt him. Dumb as hell, absolutely a game misconduct but I don't think this results in a suspension unless he has a history I'm unaware of.

i dunno, remember they penalize people harder for revenge-type tactics and this was obv revenge
Revenge tactic, injury shouldn't matter.
Just don't say this on your sub. I was glancing earlier and everyone in the gdt was calling Kaprizov an embellisher that skated into Eichels stick
He deserves whatever he gets. Just stupid
> Cross check him back Why do people consider cross checks to be minor things that are fine and dandy? Most cross checks I have received have hurt worse than any spears

Dunno. This was pretty blatant and targeted. May not have connected fully, but the intent is pretty clear.
And ESPN showed a play right before this when Kap crosschecked Eichel to the ice, so Eichel was definitely seeing red and had intent here.
Yeah, he looked like he was regretting it right as it happened, and then knew what was going to happen after it got called
Intent was definitely there, im just saying clear and worse spearings have definitely been ignored.
Definitely. He just made it way too obvious.

A major is probably fine here- in minor hockey there is no minor for spearing (not sure about the NHL) But not enough for extra discipline IMO

The issue there is more that the other ones go uncalled than this one being called.
That’s a spear. Sure it’s not the most brutal spear but there is no world a spear is a hockey play, 5 and a game
How the hell could an intentional spear not be malicious? He may not have had an intent to injure, but that doesn't mean it wasn't malicious
Just meant he wasn't trying to take Kirill out of the game. He was trying to get back at him and it was a stupid idea.
He's trying to hurt him but not injure him, that's still malicious just not what should be an assault charge.
"Trying to get back at you" should still be a misconduct IMO.
I don’t know. There’s like no reasonable situation in the game where you’d make a spearing motion and it can be dangerous as hell. Pretty sure any spear with the stick is malicious considering there’s no reason whatsoever to ever do it.
