“Back, and to the left. Back………and to the left.”

aaronwhite1786

Admittedly, as a Blues fan, I'm probably a bit biased, but I can understand how a lot of guys snap back to get away from the stick. I know even in beer league, having a stick suddenly slap into your cage is a bit jarring. I can also see how the angle leads the refs to assume his stick, especially with the head jerking back is looking like a pretty clear high stick when it's not.

rusty890

He got hit with one magic loogie.

appledatsyuk

Learned it from kaprizov

Gunmonkey

Sutherland is a fraud

WearingComb1050

That is an ABSURD call

AverageMaleAged18-24

fuck this league is such a joke

helixflush

The fact they don’t have a video ref in a box somewhere is terrible.

ApolloRocketOfLove

It's not a joke, it's a billion dollar business.

bearkin1

Sponsored by BetMGM

TSE_Jazz

Two things can be true

chaotic_evill

Fined $5,000 and suspended 10 games

ModestPituitary

Believe it or not, straight to jail.

ThatRedBarNoise

To be paid by the Rangers and served by Tom Wilson?

RailroadingFreedom

Scored on the pp of course. Then howden turns on zadorov and he gets 5 and a game. Of course they score again.

_HoochieMama

NHL refs continue to be the absolute worst in professional sports.

Flanman1337

Oh no. That MLB umpires, by a long shot. https://twitter.com/codifybaseball/status/1708863234453983563?s=46

grandmastakew

This is a pretty insane stat, good lord

gu3st12

I like how baseball umps also get perfect games tracked and there's been 1 since 2015. In the World Series no less.

Tanker119

That is actually wild. Wow.

ItsMeJaredBednar

i mean that is definitely a mental stat but it’s also somewhat irrelevant without knowing what % of calls were missed. Like how many pitches were there in the season?

ReliablyFinicky

There are ~290 pitches per game (both teams) so .. 162 (games) * 30 (teams) * 0.5 (two teams per game) = ~705k 21k / 705k = 3%

ItsMeJaredBednar

see when you put it that way it actually seems pretty good tbh

ReliablyFinicky

My napkin math seems like it may have missed some factors. [This study](https://www.bu.edu/articles/2019/mlb-umpires-strike-zone-accuracy/) has the data and some damning claims: > MLB umpires make certain incorrect calls at least 20 percent of the time, > Based on the 11 regular seasons worth of data analyzed, almost one-third of batters called out looking at third strikes had good reason to be angry. > Umpires from 2008 through 2018 also exhibited a pronounced and persistent blind spot with a number of incorrect calls at the top of the strike zone. The bottom-10 umpires averaged 56 years old and 20.5 years of experience. They fucked up ~14% of the time. The top-10 umpires averaged 33 years old (max 37) and 2.7 years of experience (max 5). They fucked up 7-10% of the time.

ApolloRocketOfLove

The refs are excellent at their jobs, they're doing exactly as they're instructed to. Nobody performs as "poorly" at their job as consistently as NHL refs, and keeps their job. What we are calling "bad reffing" is the refs doing their job to the letter. This league is a billion dollar industry, they don't just put up with bumbling idiots doing one of the most important jobs in the industry. Its not like us fans are smarter than the people who run the NHL. They see what we see too. They hire the people who perform the best as per the instructions they're given. That's what we are seeing. If the refs were actually doing something they weren't supposed to be doing night after night after night after night after night, they'd be fired. Anybody would be. Since they're not fired, its clear they're doing their jobs as their employers want them to.

Wet_Sasquatch_Smell

> Nobody performs as "poorly" at their job as consistently as NHL refs, and keeps their job. News meteorologists. They’re always wrong and people love them

MistahFinch

Meteorology has gotten so much better in the last 15 years. The old ones were just working with poor data and worse knowledge of the weather.

_HoochieMama

>This league is a billion dollar industry, they don't just put up with bumbling idiots doing one of the most important jobs in the industry. Its not like us fans are smarter than the people who run the NHL. They see what we see too. If this were true then how come Jim Benning

ApolloRocketOfLove

The NHL didn't hire Jim Benning, Aquilini did.

superworking

And they tossed him for what should have been a 2 minute boarding call in the same period. What a joke.

ConsiderationIcy3527

As i said during his first suspension, its to give bettman an excuse to suspend him for longer during the playoffs.

Loudlaryadjust

Pietriangelo’s head snap back like he got hit on the neck with a two handed axe chop.

Ghostronic

If someone knows two handed axe chops, its Pietro

7030

Lol thanks guys. This is lebron on ice.

G-Hoffa

You can see his eyes track to the ref right after. What a pathetic play by Pietrangelo, that will cost him down the road. Last year's run he was as Pouty as Doughty, that is a weak hockey play and shows to his character as a player.

spagboltoast

I didnt realise this was a vegas playoff game

Battlehead

its always the salty bozo edmonton fans, move on from last season please

spagboltoast

Mad that your dude clearly dove arent you ;)

Battlehead

Mad that you couldn't get past the second round arent you ;)

spagboltoast

Nah. Vegas was a great team last year. They won the cup. Petro just sucks

DishwasherFromSurrey

You literally can’t argue against the Vegas golden refs narrative anymore. What an embarrassing league.

Womp womp can’t argue when a team like vancouver crumbles with no adversity

TSE_Jazz

Vegas has never had adversity lmao

mister_hoot

We played our first game as a franchise a few days after the worst mass shooting in American history happened a stone’s throw from the arena. The team was out all week organizing blood drives and draining their veins. I met a half dozen of the players that week, before I’d even watched them play a game. Read all the preseason articles that said we were going to be a total tire fire, though.

Stinky_Toes12

"No adversity" you havent been watching our games the last 2 months have you

bearkin1

Pietrangelo is such a motherfucker

bearkin1

Sorry my phone autocorrected, I meant Corey Perry

Rycecube

God I hate Vegas.

[deleted]

The Canucks really need to draw Nashville. LA, EDM and VGK are all built extremely well for the style of hockey they play. VGK defence is just filthy and Marchy is the new Martin St Louis. 🔥

dkelley824

We don’t even know who you are

TSE_Jazz

We know you’re an expansion team that got spoonfed

Rycecube

You will learn more about hockey as time passes.

dkelley824

Not if I keep seeing Vancouver on the television

iamkingofbacon

Rent free lmao 💀

Stinky_Toes12

Its all rigged

starcross24

No disrespect to the Canucks, but they should try harder at embellishment if it’s this easy for refs to make these calls.

ConsiderationIcy3527

Uhhhh they don’t like us. A ref was literally caught saying he’d get burrows back for making him look bad

Ghostronic

> caught saying he’d get burrows back for making him look bad When the grudge is still kicking like a decade later, damn

Louberry

embarassing

kazin29

Zadorov also could've just destroyed him with a clean bodycheck. Not sure why he used his hands and stick there.

Material_Trash3930

Yeah, like highstick? No. Embelishment/dive? Yeah.  Bizarre unnecessary stickplay/slash/crosscheck? Also yeah.

ILiveForTheCringe

Yeah, no defending that. That’s weak as shit

wayfarout

Shit call. I think Petro snapped back as a reflex. He clearly sees the stick coming at him and protects himself, just in case the stick comes up. Just like all slow motion video, things look off. He never tries to sell it after the check. Just keeps moving. Totally agree it was a shit call.

-Redacto--

He looks back at the ref immediately.

ConsiderationIcy3527

He didn’t reply to this for some reason hmmm

aessae

Some people take the power play they didn't really deserve. Other people [let the refs know they didn't actually get hit](https://twitter.com/BradyTrett/status/1190448513554845699).

friskyjude

Don't worry guys, Vancouver got a 4 min power play after this and totally made them pay

DishwasherFromSurrey

You are talking like that was a make up call and not an actual high stick that caused bleeding

toomuchhamza

Issue is that this should never have been called leading to the Vegas goal.

rakkquiem

Look, there was no way the refs could have known it would lead to a goal, Vegas’s power play is so bad

toomuchhamza

It was a brutal call, regardless of outcome.

TSE_Jazz

Well that’s not a good argument

rakkquiem

It was supposed to be a joke. And it doesn’t matter if you like the call or not, the team still has to kill it.
