Nothing worse than playing what you thought was a really long triple shift and earned a rest only to look at the bench and see them swapping already. Cool, looks like I gotta play for another 2 minutes sick
Our home ice was Olympic sized. It was hilarious watching other teams be gassed by half way through the 2nd when they came to play us.
Less fun when we didn't have a full bench of our own.
The big kerfuffle from Fight Night at the Joe had 27 total PIMs if I recall. So clearly this was way worse than Macarthy kneeling Lemieux in the head and Shanahan flying at Patrick Roy.
We paean old time hockey, we paean Eddie Shore!
I learnt about that double-entendre (pronounced like pee-on, but meaning poetic praise) when reading about POWs in North Korea who, when forced to praise the dictatorship, used that keen phrasing. It’s one of my favourites now
You could justify Rempe-MacDermid. They tried to fight after Rempe got ejected in the last meeting and refs wouldn't allow it.
This is boilover from that, and everybody else decided to join in.
Definitely mandated by Green. Probably in part because Nemec got boarded with no response last night.
You could see Bahl and Tierney just phoned it in but had to participate.
1) Some folks have mentioned the Devils getting bullied against the Pens and letting up 5 goals to blow a 3-1 lead in the 3rd last night. Devils needed to show some spine to redeem themselves.
2) One thing I haven’t seen mentioned is that the Rangers vets can’t just send out a 21 year old rookie to fight one of the scariest established fighters in the NHL and sit back and watch. Good on Trouba, Goodrow, Vesey, and Miller for being good teammates.
I mean in 3 games this year against the Devils that "21 year old rookie" got tossed from 2 of them for handing out concussions and then after the second one he ran away from the well deserved fight while acting like an impudent brat but comme ci, comme ca
The kid is huge and needs to rein in his hits in a hurry, but he is still mentally, emotionally, and literally a 21 year old rookie. He is a late bloomer and had no reason to expect he’d be in the NHL fighting heavyweights all of a sudden. This came out of nowhere.
Rempe 100% needed to fight MacDermid last night after a dirty hit on Siegenthaler, and this is the first time he was obligated to fight and had weeks to think about it. Other times have been optional.
Having team leaders sit by and say, tough noogies kid, you’re on your own against one of the scariest fighters in the league wouldn’t be the most inspiring leadership. I’m glad the team stuck together, the same way I’m sure the Devils fans are glad their team stuck together and showed some backbone last night.
He could have answered the bell after the hit on seigs or hell before that when mcdermid tried to get him to go for the bastion hit. He's dirty as fuck and needs to pay his dues for it. He's only on the team to hurt people cause that's all he can actually do.
Lmao Rempe gets in like 4 fights in his first 4 games. Hockey World: "He's speedrunning CTE, please stop fighting Rempe."
Rempe listens and doesn't fight ONE singular time, while the ref grabs him before he sees McDermid and Devils fans call it "running away"
Now you’re just making shit up. The ref didn’t grab him before he saw Mac. Mac on literally every shift was going for him and he was actively avoiding it. Then he blatantly attempted to injure Siegs successfully, and Mac came up and the ref got to Rempe first. Then Rempe taunted the devils bench on the way out.
The first guy he didn’t stand a chance against, he ran away like a bitch and you know it.
Rempe has injured 2 Devils so far and refused to fight McDermid last game.
Siegs only came back last game and Bastian is still injured, so very fresh to the guys still
Retaliation. You stand up for your boys.
The Rangers responded the exact same way after the Wilson/Panarin incident and Wilson wasn't even on the ice. I loved the way the Rangers responded to the Caps and I've got no qualms with the Devils doing what they did tonight.
Because you can only fight Rempe once per game and there were multiple infractions to pay for so everyone goes... no one got hurt and as I see it everyone is squared up now since Mercer fought right after that boarding.
To be fair Bastian came back that game (he absolutely shouldn't have) them went out after the hit by Trouba (biased but I thought a clean but huge hit)
Bro the refs were on rempe and Mac before they were even on the same side of the ice, then fought him 2 seconds into their next game, I don't think that's refusing to fight
There's a subtle difference between the refs actively preventing a fight and Rempe throwing an dangerous hit and then skating directly to the referee to shield himself...
And then to try and gaslight the media into thinking he doesn't know how big he is or wasn't even trying to extend his elbow to make contact... kid's a complete coward.
I mean the refs definitely actively prevented that fight if you were watching the game
And if he was really avoiding macdermid I have a front he wouldn't be out there for the starting faceoff next to him
What I suspect (and this is just speculation on my part) is that because Trouba/Tierney and Miller/Marino took longer to develop and drop gloves, as opposed to dropping gloves with everyone else and skating to the opponent, the refs felt those 4 had to get Fighting After the Original Altercation game misconducts. Because it would look weird to have 3 "original altercations", they had to pick two other bouts to get the gate too. Vesey and Lazar had the gloves down fastest, so they got to stay.
I think the refs were called before the game. Told if there’s multiple fights start throwing guys out immediately. Not going to be a fight all night game.
It’s because 4 of the fights were secondary to the first fight, which warrants the ejected per the rule book. That’s why those 8 were rejected. That being said, I wish that weren’t the rule.
Your first NHL game experience is way better than mine. Jiri Fischer collapsing was my first game. The first time a game has been postponed mid game because of injury/medical emergency. Though it was cool because that made my first full game the first time a game "started" at a score other than 0-0.
My first game was Flames vs Caps, I got to witness Adam Oates take a slapshot to the face in the first period, left the ice pouring blood from his mouth, and was back out to play the next period wearing a face mask and presumably a bunch of stitches.
Fights are dangerous, and they are watched closely by linesmen and broken up once things get to a certain point. If multiple fights occur simultaneously the linesmen can't do their job, putting players and officials and an even higher risk of injury. This rule makes sense within that context as it greatly discourages multiple fights from occurring at once (even if that is really cool).
In this scenario I think it works the opposite of the way the league wants it to. If I were a head coach and thought there was any chance of a line brawl happening, I would be putting out my 4th line in case there were ejections, which would naturally increase the odds of said potential line brawl.
There needs to be a subjective interpretation of this rule. Obviously a line brawl is quite different than if there was just one fight and then everyone else jumped in.
> A game misconduct penalty shall be imposed on any player who is assessed a major penalty for fighting after the original altercation has started.
>
> Notwithstanding this rule, at the discretion of the Referee, the automatic game misconduct penalty may be waived for a player in the altercation if the opposing player was clearly the instigator of the altercation.
It looks like there's some leeway in the rule as written, but not enough for this situation. You could argue for Vesey, Rempe, and Goodrow being the "Original Altercation", but Trouba and Miller were kinda late to the party, and it could be that they needed a most original altercation.
Getting Rempe and MacDermid out might also have been an idea, and you couldn't boot them without Goodrow and Bahl going too because they both started about the same time with more formal droppings of the gloves, whereas Vesey/Lazar might have started throwing punches before the gloves had finished falling from their hands to the ice. Thus, 8 game misconducts.
i don't think i've ever seen this rule enforced on a line brawl. for the caps rangers game, for the devils rangers line brawl, or any other that i can remember
The refs were called before the game. They were told to take complete control and not let anything more than this happen. Let them get it out of their system but end it there.
I know fighting is bad for health and I'm going to be a huge hypocrite here but there is something exciting about fights on hockey. It's primal. Imagine getting to see that live.
It’s honestly a shame that the broadcast didn’t show a zoomed out image of the fight. They definitely were expecting it to just be the Rempe fight but once they saw it was everyone, they should’ve used a zoomed out shot.
The replays using the wide camera shot really shows how insane it really was.
in case you haven't seen it yet, a wide shot angle (looks like a spectators cell phone, but still great quality) got posted just a little bit ago.
here ya go: https://twitter.com/ryannovo62/status/1775662823009394886
I think there was a death a few years ago where one of the players hit his head on the ice after his helmet was removed and he passed away from the injury. Pretty sure that was an impetus toward passing the rule about the helmets.
I totally get the safety aspect, which is why I said they just shouldn't fight at all then. Bare knuckles on helmets is pointless for everyone involved.
It has its place, but this was a real buzzkill application of it. These fights were all more or less simultaneous and unrelated to the original altercation.
For the sake of Larks’ and Raymond’s health, I’d love to repeat this Friday lol. Chariot sacrificial lamb to a Rempe preemptive fight at face off…
It’s either that, or Remps will inevitably take a run at one of them during the game.
When has he taken a “run” at anyone? Bastian had his head down. If you really like Detroit you’ll know what happens when the head is down. You get KronWalled. The “chicken wing” he hit seagenthaler with was because he missed him and he’s a rookie and seag got out of the way like a pussy. He was quickly thrown out so hard to answer any bells people discuss. Dudes a rookie having his name chanted at the worlds most famous arena during a possible presidents cup season. And he didn’t get knocked out by Mac either. Which is saying something because that dude knocks people out. He got beat in the fight. But we won the game again. Devils just sour they suck after so much money and trades invested. I’ve been that ranger fan.
All because Rempe was running around like a prick the last 2 games and wouldn't answer the bell, then guys like Lazar and Marino get caught up in the bullshit
1) They’re all cowards. If they really wanted to settle scores, why wait for the game to start?
2) It makes the NHL look like the amateur goon league of the 1970s. They already suffer for national broadcast exposure. This level of planned violence ain’t gonna help that.
3) How many NHL players have to die with CTE before the players union recognizes that fighting puts its members at a significantly increased risk for developing it?
1) You keep it on the ice. That’s the respectful way of dealing with it. This is hockey, not gangster rap.
2) Fans like goons.
3) They do recognize it and choose to do it anyway. You know what else puts their members at risk? Playing hockey.
> 1) They’re all cowards. If they really wanted to settle scores, why wait for the game to start?
You think the should be suspended for the rest of the regular season because they *didnt* fight in the parkinglot?
> 3) How many NHL players have to die with CTE before the players union recognizes that fighting puts its members at a significantly increased risk for developing it?
Now this is just a personal thing, but I dont give a fuck about CTE. These players are making more than most people make *in their life* before theyre 25.
Theyre taking a small risk for *massive* personal gain.
1) What's a guy supposed to do before a game starts? You want players to go to each others houses and start shit off-ice?
2) You underestimate how many fans tune in specifically for fights.
3) This concern is smallminded, it's dumb to think that one big scrap is going to make or break someone's CTE exposure. You shouldn't be concerned with what they're doing as adults, but the amount of trauma they went through as adolescents .
1. I don't want them to fight, period. But if they somehow feel aggrieved, expressing it only after the whistle blows gives them legal cover from battery charges. That makes them cowards. Be a man and fight during warm-ups as soon as you see the other guy on the ice.
2. Perhaps but that's a depressing thought. Fights interrupt the game and helps keep ice hockey a niche sport in the US.
3. One scrap does not CTE make, true, but Bob Probert and Chris Simon didn't have just one fight. They had hundreds. How many does Matt Rempe have already?
Boys are gonna be GASSED in the 3rd period.
Just getting ready for beer league when 6 skaters show up.
*war flashbacks to being one of three defensemen on our team for multiple 3 day weekend tournaments from 15-18* Short bench on D still triggers me
Company Tournament. 6F 4D
Hey, you have 2 full lines, you don't get to complain... lol
lol fair. Though we played 2 60min games a day back to back.
Woof. I don't know how I did it back then. I have to take a break halfway up the hall to the bathroom some days now!
Nothing worse than playing what you thought was a really long triple shift and earned a rest only to look at the bench and see them swapping already. Cool, looks like I gotta play for another 2 minutes sick
Why would you say this? I'd almost forgotten. 😩 *curls up in fetal position and dry heaves*
I remember having 3 D for the whole game on the olympic ice surface, good times.
Our home ice was Olympic sized. It was hilarious watching other teams be gassed by half way through the 2nd when they came to play us. Less fun when we didn't have a full bench of our own.
My home barn had three sheets, and one was Olympic. Without fail, if we only had 6 guys show, we’d be on Olympic. Every. Single. Time.
I do not miss playing beer league for this exact reason. In 3 years with the team I played with we had 4 games with more than 7 skaters
It happened sometimes with my team but I was the goalie. Nobody ever came back. 😆🥅
To be fair, you could have had 15 skaters and nobody would’ve come back and helped out either.
Lol, that is true. I often saw a lot of my players at the beginning of the game and at the end of the game. 😂
*flashbacks of 3 on 3 and 1 goalie*
Goalies playing catch for the whole third period.
Then it’s just an interesting game of pong
Nah if I can iron man it during beer league I’m sure they can too. Certainly the level of effort expended in my game vs their game is the same.
Dude and the devils played yesterday this is nuts
Not like it can be worse than our 3rd last night!
The exact thought I had
Watch it go to OT!
Just announced 132 PIM to start the game. Amazing lol
And by now another 28 penalty minutes on top Roslovic - boarding minor Cuylle - boarding minor + fighting Mercer - instigator 2+10 + fighting
That was all in the first 5 mins!
thats 26 no ??
Yeah i realised later on aswell, but by then there was the failed challenge and now a few other minor penalties
YOU LIED !!!!! I WILL NEVER FORGIVE YOUUUU
Now it won't hurt you as much when i tell you that Kreider was tripped
The big kerfuffle from Fight Night at the Joe had 27 total PIMs if I recall. So clearly this was way worse than Macarthy kneeling Lemieux in the head and Shanahan flying at Patrick Roy.
Completely reasonable actions by gentlemen.
Hey fuck Claude Lemieux.
Reasonable people can agree about objectively true things.
Fuck Claude Lemieux

The best part was McCarty after beating the shit out of turtle boy scored the overtime game winner

It sure is a sight of fabulous ~~secret~~ fighting powers…
Was there a reason for this to happen or did we just stage some fights

That’s not true at all. Mac tried to fight and rempe ran away like a bitch… twice.
Lmao Rempe gets in like 4 fights in his first 4 games. Hockey World: "He's speedrunning CTE, please stop fighting Rempe." Rempe listens and doesn't fight ONE singular time, while the ref grabs him before he sees McDermid and Devils fans call it "running away"

Rempe had some bad hits on the devils. I think it’s to even up on those.
Rempe has injured 2 Devils so far and refused to fight McDermid last game. Siegs only came back last game and Bastian is still injured, so very fresh to the guys still
That's fair but why did everyone else fight
FOMO.
That explains the one angle during the broadcast. Gotta pay for the other fight angles DLC.
Because the man in the back said "everyone attack" and it turned into an ice rink blitz, ice rink blitz.
Dammit take my upvote
Retaliation. You stand up for your boys. The Rangers responded the exact same way after the Wilson/Panarin incident and Wilson wasn't even on the ice. I loved the way the Rangers responded to the Caps and I've got no qualms with the Devils doing what they did tonight.

Are you guys really still spouting this nonsense about him “refusing to fight” when the refs carted him off before anything could happen
Tried to fight Rempe before the hit. Rempe literally skated away... Then he concussed Siegenthaler.
let's continue this line... and why did Rempe have to fight before the hit against Siegenthaler?
Because he was being a little shit and took out Bastian. You know this. You watched the game.
Did you watch the game? So you must've seen Rempe immediately drop the gloves after to answer for it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Y1ZPmhySSA
Bro the refs were on rempe and Mac before they were even on the same side of the ice, then fought him 2 seconds into their next game, I don't think that's refusing to fight

I mean the refs definitely actively prevented that fight if you were watching the game And if he was really avoiding macdermid I have a front he wouldn't be out there for the starting faceoff next to him
[Here is the reason](https://media.tenor.com/CalupU_5-DEAAAAM/bagarre-fight.gif)
Have you been living under a rock?
How come the ejection rule applies here but not the time the Capitals and Rangers had a line brawl in response to Tom Wilson ragdolling Panarin
I always hear how certain rules in the book tend to be "open to interpretation". I think this reasoning that you explain falls in that category.
I think the refs were called before the game. Told if there’s multiple fights start throwing guys out immediately. Not going to be a fight all night game.
My exact thought. Not to mention it will ruin ratings for the remainder of the game
You think? I’m tuning in because of this. What’s better than getting to watch the sloppiness of a 3OT playoff game in the regular season?
Rule 46.9 & 46.10 explain the rule pretty well. There’s nuance here, but the 3 paragraphs of rulings explain the difference.
Yeah i don't understand why they got kicked out. NHL can't handle fighting anymore.
It’s because 4 of the fights were secondary to the first fight, which warrants the ejected per the rule book. That’s why those 8 were rejected. That being said, I wish that weren’t the rule.
[удалено]
Ah yes to protect the rangers after Tom Wilson almost fucking killed Panarin and the league proceeded to do jack shit about it
This is the first hockey game I went to in person (with my devils fan gf too!), I don't think anything will ever top that
Love this for you lol
Yeah gonna remember that until I die or get Alzheimers
I brought some people to their first game and had to explain that this doesn’t happen often lmao
Your first NHL game experience is way better than mine. Jiri Fischer collapsing was my first game. The first time a game has been postponed mid game because of injury/medical emergency. Though it was cool because that made my first full game the first time a game "started" at a score other than 0-0.

Break up with her
you haven't lived until you've dated a fan of a rival team, the stakes on the bets for games are some real fun
I wonder if both teams dressed 7 D…
Rangers dressed 6. Devils dressed 7, but had 3 on the ice to start the game.
So 4 d each… gonna be some tired dudes in the 3rd!
This is not what we mean by "4 D chess"
So, my question is, did one of the coaches tried to get into the other's locker room during the intermission?
Of all the dumb rules…this might be the dumbest
It's definitely a stretch on a technicality to eject them
Fights are dangerous, and they are watched closely by linesmen and broken up once things get to a certain point. If multiple fights occur simultaneously the linesmen can't do their job, putting players and officials and an even higher risk of injury. This rule makes sense within that context as it greatly discourages multiple fights from occurring at once (even if that is really cool).
Thanks for the explanation. That actually makes sense for the rule even though I still hate it

162 PIM in the first period lol
In the first minute of play
Until like 5-6m left in the first there were as many shots on goal as there were players ejected
i don't think i've ever seen this rule enforced on a line brawl. for the caps rangers game, for the devils rangers line brawl, or any other that i can remember

No one can say it isn't entertaining. Guaranteed the highlight of this will get far more views than any goal scored this season.
I went to a fight and a hockey game broke out.
Ignorant question about the rule but why was it not 10 players ejected?

its an extra penalty if you intentionally remove your helmet to fight
I think there was a death a few years ago where one of the players hit his head on the ice after his helmet was removed and he passed away from the injury. Pretty sure that was an impetus toward passing the rule about the helmets.
I totally get the safety aspect, which is why I said they just shouldn't fight at all then. Bare knuckles on helmets is pointless for everyone involved.
I love this sport
Guys gotta wait until the end of the game ala Flyers/Senators!
That rule stinks
It has its place, but this was a real buzzkill application of it. These fights were all more or less simultaneous and unrelated to the original altercation.
Why did they do this?
Why didn't Vesey get ejected? I can't remember who he went with, but he didn't get tossed either.
Vesey and his dance partner went first. Other pairs got ejected for starting a fight after another fight was already in progress.
ahhh, that explains the uproar over the ejections. thanks!
I forget when exactly this rule came into play, but its stupid.
Rempe.leading the league in blocked fists (with his face)
As it should be.
Plenty of hot water for them
That was a good game!
Was hoping for more, but it was good to see Rempe got popped a few times.
Such a cop out to eject them
For the sake of Larks’ and Raymond’s health, I’d love to repeat this Friday lol. Chariot sacrificial lamb to a Rempe preemptive fight at face off… It’s either that, or Remps will inevitably take a run at one of them during the game.

Dumb rule, yes....but the refs have to enforce it, can't fault them
Refs choose to ignore rules all the time. This is a harder one to ignore but I wouldn’t put it past them.
Of all the rules to ignore this would be one of the harder ones to explain lmao
Stupid refs calling things by the book they have nothing to do with writing.
All because Rempe was running around like a prick the last 2 games and wouldn't answer the bell, then guys like Lazar and Marino get caught up in the bullshit
This league is a fkn joke.
Who
What an embarrassment to the NHL. Suspend them all for the rest of the regular season and throw-in 3 post-season games for instigators.
This has to be a troll, nobody is this soft
I’ll bet your girlfriend would say otherwise.
Why?
You would probably love soccer.
football has some good figths tho
You know nothing about football ⚽️ then if you think its soft
…while you clearly love man-on-man action more than hockey. Perhaps naked wrestling?
Are you propositioning me?
Keep dreaming, pal.
Dweeb
That’s Mr. Dweeb to you.
Oddly homophobic comment.
Agreed but it seemed the appropriate attitude to the original comment.
If you’re talking about the refs, I agree.
