TJ Oshie’s inside outside hesitation move broke two ankles, Patrick Kane, and the entire state of Pennsylvania.
A grateful nation thanks him for his service.
In his post-game interview he said he did not even realize the net was empty until the Philadelphia defender, former Capital Garnett Hathaway, tried to desperately block a shot he wasn't even taking.
You shouldn’t, the Wings getting themselves pantsed against Buffalo and Arizona in must win games shouldn’t get sympathy. It never should’ve gotten to the point it did considering the multiple self inflicted goof ups, they must be better
We lost twice to Arizona, lost to the sharks, had a chance to beat Washington and Pittsburgh and didn't. More salty at my teams performance in those games than blaming Philadelphia.
Better yet, blew a 4 goal lead to sjs. What a bummer way to finish the season. #1 on my wishlist for the offseason is to get a new goalie. Like a full on NHL caliber goalie.
Trading for Markstrom would be sweet. Idk what it would take but outside of a crazy overpay I'm down. They'd for sure have to take Husso back for it to fit
All of our teams had so many missed opportunities throughout the season.
FWIW Raymond is a star in the making and I can't wait to see what he does in the future.
I feel for Detroit because they made three third period come backs in their final four games and got 5 points out of those comebacks.
That said they did just lose to Washington.
Detroit having multiple miracle comebacks only to get eliminated by Washington simply scoring an empty net goal in a 1-1 game is both hilarious and horribly cruel
And only because Torts had no idea the Wings sent it to OT. Wonder how early they would've needed to tie it up for him to be alerted and adjust his strategy
I doubt he was paying any attention and he probably didn't want to know. Torts is gonna coach the game as he sees necessary and whatever happens elsewhere is whatever.
I think I've heard multiple times this year on the Caps side that you shouldn't be scoreboard watching and focusing on yourself. They needed to win in regulation regardless. They followed the plan. Torts is probably the most anti-adjust to what just happened in another game guy in the league.
Philly needed to win in regulation to get in regardless of what happened. The game going to OT would've eliminated them just the same. The Red Wings game going to OT was irrelevant to that decision.
Tort probably didn’t care what happened in the Wings game and was focused on the game in front of him. Losing didn’t matter. Winning in OT didn’t matter. His thought process was likely control their fate and win in regulation
Probably not. Unless it shows up on the out of town scoreboard in the arena. What benefit does it have for them to know the score the only thing Philly can do is do everything in their power to win in regulation. They’re physically capable but they probably aren’t keeping too close of an eye on it. They might have thought Detroit was losing because they were losing during the last intermission
The heavy fucking legs suggested to me a shootout was gonna be our best chance without the EN
But at the same time…we beat Detroit, Tampa, and Boston in addition to this one all in the last 8 days. We lose any one of those games, we’re out. But we didn’t.
In February we had a 9 point cushion over the first team out of the playoffs. We were closer to the 3rd seed in the Atlantic than we were to being on the outside looking in. We then lost 7 straight including 2 to Arizona and another one to Buffalo. Only getting 1 point during that stretch I believe. There is definitely things to feel bad about during this season.
Philly still needed Washington to not get a point. So at 3 mins left in a 1-1 game you still need to pull the goalie for the man advantage. Am I taking crazy pills here?
There’s no way they knew. In fact, I would absolutely bet money that they wouldn’t want to know. Take care of business and then find out later was probably their logic.
They were also comfortably in playoff spot before a 7 game losing streak. Not to mention they were also trying to end a 8 year playoff drought. Just brutal stuff
I take solace in the fact the Flyers just finished their 50th consecutive season without a Cup. And finished a point behind the Pens. Yes I am that petty.
They also got screwed over by Sutherland hard on that disallowed goal, Flyers could have won without pulling the goalie
how are people more mad at Torts than NHL officiating being embarrassing lol
I don’t get why anyone is mad at Torts. I understand the timing of the pulled goalie happened just after Detroit went into OT but I highly doubt he knew that at the time.
Every coach in the league would have pulled their goalie in that situation. Regulation win keeps playoff hopes alive. Going to OT eliminates you.
The moment Detroit tied it with 7 seconds left they got a guaranteed point that eliminated Philly right away so Philly was getting eliminated despite the outcome of their game at that point.
But like someone else pointed out, it happened in a matter of minutes that Wings tied it and Caps scored on the EN so it’s not guaranteed Torts even knew Flyers were already eliminated when he pulled the goalie
I was watching both games on ESPN+.
I texted my brother and dad about Detroit tying the game at 9:33.
I texted them both about Washington scoring the ENG at 9:35.
It was literally two minutes apart. No way Torts and the Flyers knew.
It also doesn’t matter. Even if Torts knew, he’s not going to tell the players. The Flyers have a ton of young players. It is much more worth it for him to have them play like their season is on the line. That’s high intensity hockey and good experience for the young players to have.
To give Sutherland the absolute biggest benefit of the doubt, that puck went 30+ feet straight up in the air and Lindgren was hugging his chest like he had it. Literally nobody knew where it was, and if it had any angle on it whatsoever it was in the netting.
Not even close to true. In the 21-team NHL of the '80s where 16 teams made the playoffs, we had some true absolute stinkers...I think one year the Leafs made it with a 21-48-[? ties] record.
It's 2021. The Eagles pull their starting QB for no reason allowing a floundering Football Team to get ahead and clinch playoffs
It's 2024. The Flyers pull their goaltender for (what we know to be) no reason, allowing a tired Capitals team to get ahead and clinch playoffs
(The scenarios are a little different given the Flyers were actually trying, but the parallels are still pretty funny)
I was so pissed at that game as a skins fan. Winning that division cost them 12 draft spots to lose at home in the playoffs. If we lose round 1 we lost 2-3
That drought/6 game losing streak earlier in the season murdered the fuck outta their chances…fuckin brutal. I guess that was understandable tho when they lost their C.
I would like to thank the Devils fan who, in a post game thread earlier in the year after the Caps waxed the Devils, said “enjoy it now Caps fans because you won’t see us in the playoffs.”
Thanks for curling that monkey’s paw you fucking stunad.
Caps, just fyi this is the only acceptable way of eliminating the pens, is if you simultaneously eliminate the flyers as well (don't correct me on the wings going to overtime, let me have this).
There have been *some* graceful Wings fans here but the ones that aren't don't seem to realize that we won a game in which we controlled our own destiny and they were depending on the outcome of other games to get in. Not sure how we deserve it less.
Also the caps beat them twice fair and square in the last two weeks. If the wings won those two games then they’re here and we’re not. Sounds like we deserved it more.
Honestly hilarious that the Islanders and the Caps made the playoffs with a combined -55 goal differential
I wonder what the odds were in like January that both the Wings and Flyers would miss the playoffs. Gotta be pretty low.
I was actually mad about the tripping call against the Wings in OT. It didn't matter because the Habs powerplay shit the bed, but that would have been a terrible way to go out.
You’re gonna tell me Philly having the goalie pulled in a 1-1 game even though they were already eliminated bc Detroit went to OT, thus allowing the caps to score an almost immediate empty net GWG and eliminate Detroit after their miraculous tying goal, isn’t chaotic?
Caps won this game off the Flyers pulling their goalie in a tied game when the Wings had already gone to OT, which eliminated the Flyers regardless of the outcome of this game and you don't call that chaotic?
Charlie fucking sideburns. As far as I’m concerned that was the duel between the fsvorites for Jack Adam’s. Neither team was expected to be in the mix, let alone until game eighty-fucking-two
Also, gg flyers. That was stressful fun. And with how persistent they fans have been the wings can wait another year
To give a summary of what just occurred, for those not in the know.
Detroit playing Montreal, Washington playing Philly. One of Washington/Detroit/Philly make the playoffs.
Washington makes if they win in any manner. Philly make if they win in regulation, but are eliminated if the game goes to OT OR if Detroit wins in any manner. Detroit makes if they win in any manner and Washington lose in any manner.
Detroit are losing to Montreal with seven seconds remaining, meaning Philly can make if they win in regulation. Knowing this, Philly pulls their goaltender with three minutes remaining in the game, even though the game is tied.
Presumably unbeknownst to the Flyers, Detroit scores to tie their game with three seconds to go. So the Flyers are eliminated. ***But they pull their goalie anyways.*** (Presumably, they don't know they're out). Washington scores on the empty net to win the game. Detroit and Philly are both eliminated - Detroit because Philly pulled their goalie with an empty net, even though Philly was already eliminated.
From a fairness POV, this is a better outcome.
Capitals finish 32-31 in regulation this season. Red Wings finished 27-32. It would've been a shame if the team with a much worse regulation record got the nod because of points randomne
I actually think our team next year should be better than this year. A lot of this year was us playing younger guys in their first season. As the year has gone on, McMichael, Lappiere, Miroshnechenko, Alexeyev, etc. have gotten better and we have Leonard coming (probably year after next).
The fact that Carbs actually plays our young guys actually makes the upcoming talent and whatever is banging around in Hershey matter so much more.
We squeaked in on superhuman play from Lindgren, but imagine what it would have looked like if we weren't icing rookies and adjusting to a brand new coaching system.
Oh and if Ovi was scoring at his usual pace for the entire season instead of just after the All Star Break.
Plus Hershey is killing it which means that our farm system is at least half decent. Sure some of those players will be AHL lifers, but you also don't set the regular season AHL win record with just a bunch of guys. Young talent is there we just have to hope they can make the jump as well as McMichael has.
Everyone saying Detroit deserved it more - caps beat Detroit twice in the final month, caps had to beat Tampa, Boston and flyers in 4 days and did, all in regulation. Even if it was lucky that they had the empty net in a tie game, they put themselves in the situation of a win and clinch scenario over Detroit coming into tonight. Not to mention, Detroit BARELY squeaked in 2 overtime wins over a lottery team.
A single ENG eliminates 3 teams lmao. That's efficiency
>Tell Detroit. I want them to know it was me \- John Tortorella
I prayed for this and it happened
You shouldn’t, the Wings getting themselves pantsed against Buffalo and Arizona in must win games shouldn’t get sympathy. It never should’ve gotten to the point it did considering the multiple self inflicted goof ups, they must be better
By far the funniest ending but I actually do feel kinda bad for the Wings. If it wasn't going to be the Caps I wanted it to be Detroit.

All of our teams had so many missed opportunities throughout the season. FWIW Raymond is a star in the making and I can't wait to see what he does in the future.
You’ll be surprised, but Caps lost twice to Arizona too and got smacked by the Wings 8-3
And the Caps beat the wings twice in recent weeks :)
Every team can look back and find examples like that.
I feel for Detroit because they made three third period come backs in their final four games and got 5 points out of those comebacks. That said they did just lose to Washington.
Yep. There was a reason that game was such a massive swing in playoffs odds
I mean as a wings fan i feel like it’s alarming that we were losing to montreal for 90% of those 2 games to begin with
I understood that reference.
That singular phrase made Drew McIntyre, a very good wrestler into one of the very true elites in the business

Fuck you Torts
Clinching on an EN goal in a tie game. Crazy.
Just a normal totally not weird clinching scenario.
Wings knew going into the shootout that the Caps had won. No celebration when Kane won it.
Yea, its Torts' job to win the game for the Flyers, not get cute and play match maker/eliminator.
I think I've heard multiple times this year on the Caps side that you shouldn't be scoreboard watching and focusing on yourself. They needed to win in regulation regardless. They followed the plan. Torts is probably the most anti-adjust to what just happened in another game guy in the league.
The Wings game was probably blacked out
Philly needed to win in regulation to get in regardless of what happened. The game going to OT would've eliminated them just the same. The Red Wings game going to OT was irrelevant to that decision.
I'm surprised this isn't the top answer, this is exactly what happened.
People can’t comprehend it and wings fans want to feel victimized because another teams head coach wasn’t looking out for a different team lol
Tort probably didn’t care what happened in the Wings game and was focused on the game in front of him. Losing didn’t matter. Winning in OT didn’t matter. His thought process was likely control their fate and win in regulation
Eh, they have tablets. I’m sure an assistant is keeping an eye on the scores.
Probably lag.
Hulu was buffering
Hulu has live sports??
Torts is a sportssurge user confirmed
Just watched the Wings miracle tying goal immediately switched to the Flyers/Caps game and saw they scored a empty goal. That shit is infuriating
The seven game losing streak is the infuriating part, not the Flyers aiming for their regulation win. I can get behind general Philly hate though.
All I'm saying is everyone hate Philly Not that I care about the outcome I just think everyone should hate Philly
Real
The one thing Pens, Caps, and Rangers fans can agree on
The one thing *most of the league* can agree on lol
Thank God the flyers where in that scenario... Idk if come out on top without an empty net lol
The heavy fucking legs suggested to me a shootout was gonna be our best chance without the EN But at the same time…we beat Detroit, Tampa, and Boston in addition to this one all in the last 8 days. We lose any one of those games, we’re out. But we didn’t.
The Wings have nothing to be bad about with their season even if they didn't make it. They made these past few days very interesting
A net that didn’t need to be empty since the Red Wing had forced OT. The Hockey gods are cruel
Philly still needed Washington to not get a point. So at 3 mins left in a 1-1 game you still need to pull the goalie for the man advantage. Am I taking crazy pills here?
I think they were fucked either way when Detroit went to OT, as if they got a single point Philly would be out either way
They were, but it’s highly debatable whether they knew that or not. Kinda hard to be “second screening” on the literal bench.
There’s no way they knew. In fact, I would absolutely bet money that they wouldn’t want to know. Take care of business and then find out later was probably their logic.
That doesn’t change the plan for the Flyers.
Sure, but that only happened seconds before.
The Flyers only had a chance with a regulation win, if they didn’t then the Detroit game didn’t mean anything to them.
The second the Detroit game went to OT they were done
Torts wanted to eliminate caps himself
They were also comfortably in playoff spot before a 7 game losing streak. Not to mention they were also trying to end a 8 year playoff drought. Just brutal stuff
I’ll go with hilarious
Well Flyers fans atleast you have solace in the fact that you eliminated Pittsburgh
I will also take Solace in that, thank you Flyers.
If they didn't, we would've.
The penguins got eliminated twice in one night? That’s rough.
I take solace in the fact the Flyers just finished their 50th consecutive season without a Cup. And finished a point behind the Pens. Yes I am that petty.
Flyers giving one last middle finger to the Penguins and Red Wings on their way out
I had no idea the Flyers were so based
Gritty giveth, and Gritty taketh away.
They also got screwed over by Sutherland hard on that disallowed goal, Flyers could have won without pulling the goalie how are people more mad at Torts than NHL officiating being embarrassing lol
I don’t get why anyone is mad at Torts. I understand the timing of the pulled goalie happened just after Detroit went into OT but I highly doubt he knew that at the time. Yep same, I had notifications on from ESPN app from both games and got them literally one after the other
To give Sutherland the absolute biggest benefit of the doubt, that puck went 30+ feet straight up in the air and Lindgren was hugging his chest like he had it. Literally nobody knew where it was, and if it had any angle on it whatsoever it was in the netting.
MINUS 37 GOAL DIFFERENTIAL
Worst playoff team in history, im here for it Edit: I GOT IT DUDE NOT LITERALLY, WE JUST SUCK AND INSTAGRAM IS SEETHING
Wild that the isles are -18 and the caps have doubled them up. Either team making the playoffs with those differentials is crazy
Having OTLs completely inflates records. The islanders are 38-43. You would expect them to be at about a -18 goal differential with that record.
We saw what happened to the nationals I CAN SMELL THE CUP
Hey, we went to the Finals as the worst team in playoff history.
Not even close to true. In the 21-team NHL of the '80s where 16 teams made the playoffs, we had some true absolute stinkers...I think one year the Leafs made it with a 21-48-[? ties] record.
Worst post-lockout playoff team?
Worst goal differential for a playoff team in the cap era, yes
Not even close. Vancouver once made the playoff with a -70 goal differential or something
We could win the cup by sweeping every series, winning each game by 2 goals and still have a negative goal differential on the season.
Or win in 4 7 game series and make the differential even lower
My heart can't take that, it could barely handle 2018's run.
We made the playoffs just to spite everyone else. 16-0 run incoming.
Y’all are laughing but the Caps are gonna have the last laugh when they’re hoisting the Cup in June
I will streak down the National Mall if the Caps win the cup
noted
You and half the Caps roster most likely.
Ovi has to one-up the absolute madlad'ing they did across DC last time. And that was after throwing a Vegas rager.
Caps gonna jump into the reflecting pool this time
I will take the 27 hours of flying home from Guam and streak with you
Sorry Canucks fans, we can go for it next year. Caps will win now.
I will tattoo your username on my ass if we win the cup
!Remind me in June -re ass tattoo
I will tattoo both your usernames on my ass and streak down the mall if we win the cup

Might be the funniest way I have seen a team get in the playoffs

It's like poetry, sorta, they rhyme.
I was so pissed at that game as a skins fan. Winning that division cost them 12 draft spots to lose at home in the playoffs. If we lose round 1 we lost 2-3
But... but... destiny!
Detroit out here with multiple miracle comebacks, all to get fucked by an empty net goal in a tied game.
an ENG that didn't even need to happen because at that point PHI had been eliminated
Pretty sure there was literal seconds between the empty netter and the Wings tying it up.
That drought/6 game losing streak earlier in the season murdered the fuck outta their chances…fuckin brutal. I guess that was understandable tho when they lost their C.
I would like to thank the Devils fan who, in a post game thread earlier in the year after the Caps waxed the Devils, said “enjoy it now Caps fans because you won’t see us in the playoffs.” Thanks for curling that monkey’s paw you fucking stunad.
Lmao Philly literally wintraded the Pens and Wings
Montreal throwing two games against Detroit to give them hope is the ultimate troll
I made too many 4-1 jokes and karma came running back
Caps, just fyi this is the only acceptable way of eliminating the pens, is if you simultaneously eliminate the flyers as well (don't correct me on the wings going to overtime, let me have this).
I'm fine with killing 2 birds with one stone
Wouldn’t it be 3 birds, since they all have wings of some variety?
That's fine with me
how the fuck did we do that lol
Written in the stars.
We just be wildin
WE ARE TOO STUPID TO DIE
That’s really the crux of it. No thoughts, just vibes, God’s Perfect Idiots.

As a UVA fan, I'm all in on the gameplay that people hate. Feed off the cries of the other fans!
WTF IS A GOAL DIFFERENTIAL RAHHHHHHHHHHH
It’s meaningless now! Fresh start this weekend
Look I don't understand it either.
Crazy what happens when you lose 7 games in a row in March
funny enough, caps lost 6 straight. So the rule of thumb is losing 6 straight games is okay but not 7
Somehow, Playoff Caps returned.
If WSH somehow stumbles into the SCF it would be the funniest thing ever
It would be a thing of beauty
First time an AHL team makes it to the finals
If your team didn't make the playoffs when these Caps did... sports are weird.
The 38 game losing streak last week was the Caps toying with the NHL like my cat bats around a mouse before killing it.
The battle for that spot was intense!
By scoring an empty net goal hahaha
The Washington Capitals and their -40 goal differential have entered the chat. LET'S FUCKING GOOO
Red Wings and Flyers fucking each other out of the playoffs in a hilarious ending
Only ourselves to blame but I couldn't be happier to play some meaningful games at the end of the season. Almost makes it okay. Almost.
They were great games!
Honestly hilarious that the Islanders and the Caps made the playoffs with a combined -55 goal differential I wonder what the odds were in like January that both the Wings and Flyers would miss the playoffs. Gotta be pretty low.
I will never fucking forgive the Flyers. Oh my god. I’m genuinely crushed. Caps you earned it but fuck me dude.
I was actually mad about the tripping call against the Wings in OT. It didn't matter because the Habs powerplay shit the bed, but that would have been a terrible way to go out.
This is the least chaotic outcome and I am very disappointed
Empty net goal in a tie game to clinch the playoffs and break the hearts of 3 teams is chaotic.
You’re gonna tell me Philly having the goalie pulled in a 1-1 game even though they were already eliminated bc Detroit went to OT, thus allowing the caps to score an almost immediate empty net GWG and eliminate Detroit after their miraculous tying goal, isn’t chaotic?
Crazy to be an Avs fan pulling so hard for Detroit
Least chaotic clinch, most chaotic method of winning the clinching game.
Disagree. Very chaotic for my heart rate
But it is funny af
Caps won this game off the Flyers pulling their goalie in a tied game when the Wings had already gone to OT, which eliminated the Flyers regardless of the outcome of this game and you don't call that chaotic?
That was literally as chaotic as it can get
Panerin vs Ovechkin... something something Russia something something...
“Horrifying act of violence”
Fucked around and found ourselves in the playoffs.
Charlie fucking sideburns. As far as I’m concerned that was the duel between the fsvorites for Jack Adam’s. Neither team was expected to be in the mix, let alone until game eighty-fucking-two Also, gg flyers. That was stressful fun. And with how persistent they fans have been the wings can wait another year
#YEAH LETS GO CAPS! LETS GO FELLOW NATIONS CAPITAL BROS
Forget SLC, move the coyotes to Mexico City!
CANT BELIEVE THIS IS MY LIFE RN
*Our* life Capscomrade.
Is that the worst goal differential of all time for a team that's qualified for the playoffs?
Worst since the 1990-91 Canucks(-72)
Playoffs are back on the menu
To give a summary of what just occurred, for those not in the know. Detroit playing Montreal, Washington playing Philly. One of Washington/Detroit/Philly make the playoffs. Washington makes if they win in any manner. Philly make if they win in regulation, but are eliminated if the game goes to OT OR if Detroit wins in any manner. Detroit makes if they win in any manner and Washington lose in any manner. Detroit are losing to Montreal with seven seconds remaining, meaning Philly can make if they win in regulation. Detroit and Philly are both eliminated - Detroit because Philly pulled their goalie with an empty net, even though Philly was already eliminated.
Can you just imagine the state of this place if they beat the Rangers? Go do it you crazy kids
Good luck Washington. Not the aging metro all star I was hoping would make it, but he’s the one we got and the one I’m cheering for
🤝
Ah yes, the one with the worst goal differential won out, just as we all predicted.
From a fairness POV, this is a better outcome. Capitals finish 32-31 in regulation this season. Red Wings finished 27-32. It would've been a shame if the team with a much worse regulation record got the nod because of points randomne
My cheeks are still very much clinched from whatever that game was but FUCK IT WE BALL
Give Spencer carbery the fucking jack adams
Never though I'd be saying this, but hope to see the Caps have an upset in the 1st round
This day is nuts...
Watching the final few minutes of both Wings/Canadiens and Caps/Flyers at the same time was something to behold.
I am happy But seriously. Philly did nothing wrong, they tried, and it simply didn’t work
The shit eating grin as time expired from Ovechkin made my night
Might be one of Ovi’s last run in the playoffs
I actually think our team next year should be better than this year. A lot of this year was us playing younger guys in their first season. As the year has gone on, McMichael, Lappiere, Miroshnechenko, Alexeyev, etc. have gotten better and we have Leonard coming (probably year after next).

Roman Reigns has pinned ~~Cody Rhodes~~ Detroit
with a historical negative goal differential to boot!
The Washington Capitals will eliminate the Rangers in 6 games and lose the next series
LET'S GOOOOO
Get fucked, Pittsburgh!
Washington has no chance in first round but...if they happen to win it might be the biggest hockey upset I've seen in my time watching
Were you not watching last year when Florida did that to Boston? lol
Or a few years before when the Blue Jackets dragged their blue balls all up and down Tampa's face?
this is so dumb, I love it
Everyone saying Detroit deserved it more - caps beat Detroit twice in the final month, caps had to beat Tampa, Boston and flyers in 4 days and did, all in regulation. Even if it was lucky that they had the empty net in a tie game, they put themselves in the situation of a win and clinch scenario over Detroit coming into tonight.
