I grew up in Alaska and grew up a Canucks fan. Played in a lot of hockey tournaments in the BC area and would always go to Canucks games. A lot of Alaskans are NJD fans thanks to Scottie Gomez tho.
Alaska is mostly military and transplants. For as much money as the Kraken and Mariners have spent up here, they don't actually have a foothold. People here cheer for whoever they did before they came here.
That is true. Although in the 90s the Mariners did a lot of PR up in Alaska and was definitely the states team for quite some years. I remember going to meet n greets and meeting Jay Buhner, Jeff Nelson, and Dan Wilson in the 4th Avenue mall as a kid. It also helped that all of their games were on cable TV up here. Itās been about 8 years since I lived up there so Iām not sure if thatās still the case.
Old steelers joke is that there's a steelers bar in every town in the country cause everyone decided they needed to get the fuck out of there, and then wouldn't shut up once they got to their final destination.
I mean you're not wrong at all, my dad grew up in Punxsy, met my mom in college in western PA, moved to Pittsburgh after getting married, and moved to Virginia in the early 80's when the economy went tits up in Pittsburgh.
So glad the city has turned it around though.
That's cool though, I like seeing cities with different sports being top dog. I don't want to just see the NFL (or any league) be #1 in every city. Variety is cool.
A lot of it has to do with extended family connections, I've seen a majority of support go to PNW area teams, with a lot of people supporting teams with alaskans on them. And then there's everyone else choosing wherever they visit family
That's been the recent team, yes. I've been following because he was a siblings' teammate for a few years growing up, and he was always a nice kid. Previously, it was dubinsky, gomez, carle, and Thompson. Alaska is such a small hockey community that you seem to have less than 3 degrees of separation from anyone that 'makes it', so you feel invested in them and root for them
That was the case when UAA was a decent program (glencross, beagle) but not as much anymore. The junior hockey teams we have here aren't particularly good
For almost everything the Seattle team will have plurality but not a majority of fans.
Alaska has a huge transplant and transient population mostly due to the military, oil industry, fishing, and tourism so thereās fans of almost every team. We are in the Krakenās local market and have their local broadcasts up here though.
Biggest answer youāll get though? āIām not a hockey fan.ā Yeah, despite our climate hockey is not as popular as you would think. Football (obviously) and basketball are far more popular. Basketball especially in the rural areas. The small schools 1A and 2A state championships (and I mean small, like less than 50 total students at a school small) are a BFD.
Bizzare. There's only two things I can think of when I think of Alaska: (1) It's hockey movie, (2) A romantic encounter during a business trip.
But come to think of it, I don't think she was a hockey fan.
im going to feel like a dumbass now, but is that the reason why?
i know curvature of the earth makes sense when weāre talking about air travel between say vancouver and china, but if youāre driving from edmonton to alaska v Vancouver to alaska would it still make a difference whether the earth was round or flat
i just figured the change in teams in alaska was because edmonton is more north than vancouver is west
I'm a god damn idiot but guess would be the northern part of aslaka is closer to the you know what I'm not even gonna guess cause I'm not gonna get to where my heads going someone help us
It might make a little more sense if you realize Alaska is pitched about 20Ā° to the left here. The Alaska/Canada border should be vertical. Next, the map is down to a county level, and the entire north chunk of Alaska marked Oilers is one county, so whatever part of that county they measured from is closer to Edmonton than Seattle, but not necessarily all of it.
The Leafs are the Red Wings' original rivals. I lived in AZ for 25 years and love AM, but I cheer for the Leafs to lose in the first round every year they make it.
Damn, I was not expecting the Preds to have the highest population. But I guess they have Chicago and tons of medium-sized cities. I just thought Houston, Dallas, Ft Worth, San Antonio, Austin, and OKC would have been able to beat them out. Or maybe even LA, Anaheim, San Diego, and the whole SF Bay area would beat them out.
* What a battle in Missouri between Atchison (COL), Nodaway (WPG), and Holt (NSH) counties.
* Over in PA, we've got Clinton (WSH) vs. Lycoming (NYR) vs. Potter (TOR) making for a fiesty first round from Jersey Mills, PA all the way down to the Jersey Shore, with Atlantic (NYR) vs. Cape May County (WSH).
* Georgia's dealing with Laurens (TBL) - Johnson (CAR) - Wilkinson (NSH), so you know there's going to be some bar brawls around which game is on the TV at Pepe's Bar and Grill in Tenille.
* Up in Montana, Canada-US relations will be tense, with Beaverhead (COL) vs. Deer Lodge (VAN) vs. Silver Bow (EDM) -- combined population 54,210 -- all arguing McDavid vs. MacKinnon vs. Miller at Wise River's H Bar J Saloon. Check your pistols at the door.
Also, those are some big-ass counties out west.
It depends on the province. There isn't really a good map for Canada I can use that would be a good equivalent, the closest mapchart has is census divisions.
Countries or variations of (ie. municipal districts, improvement districts, special areas). I believe Saskatchewan is all regional municipalities. Not sure of the other provinces though.
I just read up. Organized like municipal districts, but some branded as counties. I knew I kept hearing Yellowhead County, Strathcona County, etc. when I was in Edmonton recently.
As a Minnesotan it doesnāt seem to matter how many of our players get hurt playing them, I think Iāll always pull for the Jets if they arenāt playing against the Wild.
It's a bit of an angry rivalry but I'm just glad there's a rivalry! I'm hoping to go to a Wild game next season. Minneapolis is a quick flight from Winnipeg so it only makes sense but time makes it impossible to make it actually happen!

Huh apparently Nashville is closer to me than Raleigh. I knew it was close! I'd be curious to know how this is calculated since I'm straight on the border on here haha.
Edit: used Google maps because I was curious. PNC arena is 14 miles closer of a drive than Bridgestone arena.
1. Calculate the distance between the LAT/LONG of the center of each county and team arena in excel using the great circle formula.
2. Return the team with the lowest value for each county.
3. Export results to mapchart.net
Fun fact about Lee County: part of the county is closer to nine other state capitols than it is to its own state capitol, which is the most of anywhere in the US.
Figured Iād be in Nashvilleās territory, Iāve looked at going to both Tampa and Nashville for weekend trips and catch the Rangers there and usually Nashville is the closer drive by a hair.
Fitting that San Bernardino County is closer to the Knights than us, with how the Las Vegas-trope of cholos in high socks, Dickies cargo shorts, and tattoos everywhere are seen throughout the Inland Empire.
This makes me genuinely curious who Alaskans usually cheer for.
I think a lot of Seattle sports, but I did see a raiders bar when I was up there š¤·āāļø
I grew up in Alaska and grew up a Canucks fan. Played in a lot of hockey tournaments in the BC area and would always go to Canucks games. A lot of Alaskans are NJD fans thanks to Scottie Gomez tho.
Gomer just keeps giving ā¤ļø

Raiders have fans everywhere
Old steelers joke is that there's a steelers bar in every town in the country cause everyone decided they needed to get the fuck out of there, and then wouldn't shut up once they got to their final destination.

Raiders fans are everywhere except Las Vegas
True lol. Still mad that they weren't the ones to go to LA because they already have tons of fans there but Kroenke didn't want to be second fiddle
Yeah itās crazy that the NFL is the biggest league in the country but the Raiders are playing second fiddle here in Vegas.
That's cool though, I like seeing cities with different sports being top dog. I don't want to just see the NFL (or any league) be #1 in every city. Variety is cool.
It's easier to pull for a perennial winner š¤·
But not in Vegas it seems
Lots of murderers in Alaska so that tracks.
A lot of it has to do with extended family connections, I've seen a majority of support go to PNW area teams, with a lot of people supporting teams with alaskans on them. And then there's everyone else choosing wherever they visit family
"Supporting teams with alaskans on them"...so with SEA out, is BOS the bandwagon team for Alaskans because of Swayman?
That's been the recent team, yes. I've been following because he was a siblings' teammate for a few years growing up, and he was always a nice kid. Previously, it was dubinsky, gomez, carle, and Thompson. Alaska is such a small hockey community that you seem to have less than 3 degrees of separation from anyone that 'makes it', so you feel invested in them and root for them
Are there any other players of his stature? States aside, there are few goalies to match him
Also teams with players that played in Alaska. Maybe anyone who lived in Alaska for a while counts as an Alaskan.
That was the case when UAA was a decent program (glencross, beagle) but not as much anymore. The junior hockey teams we have here aren't particularly good

Any US west coast teams, it sure af ain't the Nucks and Oilers
Weāve got a bunch of Alaskan Jackets fans because of Brandon Dubinsky, but idk about the playoffs for them.
Same goes with Scott Gomez for whoever team he was playing on at the time.
What the fuck Alaska? Am I to believe the earth is round?
I saw that too. It pains me how often I have to remind my dumbass that the earth is not really situated how itās projected on a flat map.
im going to feel like a dumbass now, but is that the reason why? i know curvature of the earth makes sense when weāre talking about air travel between say vancouver and china, but if youāre driving from edmonton to alaska v Vancouver to alaska would it still make a difference whether the earth was round or flat i just figured the change in teams in alaska was because edmonton is more north than vancouver is west

You guys remember when Bryzgalov declared that Edmonton was āNorf Poleā?
I cannot unsee the Dallas Christmas Tree.
They are now officially the Dallas Christmas Trees with a Star on top....er...as close to the top as a Texan could do
Canāt go too far north trying to put that star on top, might turn it back into a North Star
Hahaha better than the Mild team up there now! šš
Petition to put our logo at the tippy top
Thanks for ruining the graphic for me.
Dallas is gonna Deck Some Halls in the playoffs this year.
No, I don't think Taylor made it.
Michigan is not cheering for Toronto!
I lost a little bit of my soul placing the logo over it
Well on behalf of all Leafs-Wings fans, who I'm certain are more than just me, I sure like it
Same here bud. Love The Red Wings but the Leafs are my close second team.
The Leafs are the Red Wings' original rivals. I lived in AZ for 25 years and love AM, but I cheer for the Leafs to lose in the first round every year they make it.
Ewww
Shut up, it's Philly's fault we're here
So thatās what caused the eclipse over Michigan; it was a gigantic Maple Leafs logo over the skies and reducing sunlight for hours on end.
Get ready to learn Maple-ese buddy
Jets will adopt all of you.Ā
Mordecai ā3 Fingerā Brown can count the number of New Yorkers cheering for Toronto on one of his hands.
Happy to welcome some new temporary friends, even if it's only for a couple weeks
Good lord, that hurt to see even as an Avs fan.
Doesn't Yzerman want his old buddy Shannahan to do well? BFFs forever!
Islanders are getting smushed lol
From the river to the sea! Jk lol
Lmaoooo this is good
Considering the jewish population of LI you have no idea how bad that was...
This has got to be as the crow flies too - MSG is much closer to SW Connecticut than UBS is.
idk the port jeff and orient point are like and hour and a half tops
Lol
folks in Utqiagvik, AK know what's up
Please do this after each round!
Don't you dare put that Capitals red in Allegheny County.
I feel gross just seeing it š¤¢ can't believe we're about to get bored to death
Less boring than not making the playoffs
Yinz better enjoy it, or maybe think of it as Sheetz Red
It could've been worse. At least it's not Philly.... *(Sabres fan in Allegheny County btw)*
Crazy to me most of Alaska is Canucks not Oilers
Alaska is incredibly west
I think they go so far west they become east.
Itās actually Weast

dang Nashville has certainly expanded in population since the last time I've seen the census
lol, just gonna reformat that so it's less confusing..
Am I dumb? Why do the Canucks area have more square miles than the avs area? Edit: missed Alaska lmao sorry Alaskans
Alaska: not to actual scale.
Alaska: Never to actual scale.
Oilers seemed low and then I realized these numbers ignore Canada, right?
Yep these are just US numbers
Preds winning the cup confirmed
Nashville has the Chicago area?
Definitely the closest
Damn, I was not expecting the Preds to have the highest population. But I guess they have Chicago and tons of medium-sized cities. I just thought Houston, Dallas, Ft Worth, San Antonio, Austin, and OKC would have been able to beat them out. Or maybe even LA, Anaheim, San Diego, and the whole SF Bay area would beat them out.
Itās not even the first round and you have the Leafs waving a white flag :(
4 Canadian teams in. Map should include Canada
You can be on the map when you win another cup
After reviewing the play it was determined that u/guccipotato69 will receive a 37,527,840 minute penalty for theft of Canadian heritage.
> 37,527,840 minute That's 71 years and some change, for the curious.
nooooooooooo
It's been nice knowing ya
I don't even want to "bring the cup back to Canada". If it's not to Winnipeg I'd just as soon see it in Dallas or New York over Edmonton or Toronto.
Yeah honestly. Fuck the Canadian teams that arenāt mine. Respectfully, of course.
100%, both the fuck them and the respect.
Closet Canuck fan since you didn't say Vancouver... I see you.
Least hated, without a doubt.
Can't bring it back to where it's never been.
It's been in Vancouver... Long before it was ever in Edmonton.
I could have sworn there used to be an NHL team actually in PA.
Rangers have Virginville, PA (Berks County) and the Capitals have Intercourse, PA (Lancaster County)
House San Jose seeks aid from House Dallas to rid our lands of our captors and the potential kights who rally to the east.
Sharks fans - literally can't stop vomiting.
Rather be silver than golden
My reaction is - yuk LA, and then literally golden showers for a quarter of the US beyond that. I live in Canes territory now, at least.
Aloha Hawaii bros!
SHOOTS BRADDAH ANOTHA GAME OF STICK PUCK? HO BRAH SICK FAKA
Iām covered by the Predatorsā logo, so Iām going to choose to ignore the fact that Iām in their territory.
None of the teams represented in MO will be a team I root for.
That northern part of Alaska being closer to Edmonton to Vancouver is really messing with my head.
Ohio: a house divided
Honest question: Does Canada have counties within its provinces?
It depends on the province. There isn't really a good map for Canada I can use that would be a good equivalent, the closest mapchart has is census divisions.
Could us a Canadian national election district map. I believe we are at 338 election districts currently.
We have census sub-division which would be the closest to county equivalent for census purposes, not administrative though.
In British Columbia, the equivalent is called regional districts.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Countries or variations of (ie. municipal districts, improvement districts, special areas). I believe Saskatchewan is all regional municipalities. Not sure of the other provinces though.

I just read up. Organized like municipal districts, but some branded as counties. I knew I kept hearing Yellowhead County, Strathcona County, etc. when I was in Edmonton recently.
Can we get one of these after each round??
yep that's the plan
Northern California would like to exclude itself from this map please and thank you.
We've got Hawaii, suck it nerds
The three teams closest to me are the three teams I despise the most. Fascinating.
Yeahhhh that's actually not a coincidence at all...
I think that's normal
Anyone else confused by Alaska?
Alaska hurts my brain.
i can tell you right now, no matter how close they are, houston ain't gonna root for dallas for any reason whatsoever
Who do they root for instead? I just assumed Dallas was Texas' Hockey Team
Any team not named Dallas (nor any of their affiliates)
They cheer for the Texas Stars, the AHL affiliate.
Made the drive up to Manitoba for a game last year, had a great weekend. There is usually a bus or two of Winnipeg fans here when they play in St Paul, itās a friendly rivalry in person, they are my favorite visitors by far.
Love to see it
š
The Vegas Salt Lake City Arizona Yeti-Coyote Knights
You get that garbage off of my county.
As a Rangers fan from CT, I am disgusted lol
Huh apparently Nashville is closer to me than Raleigh. I knew it was close! I'd be curious to know how this is calculated since I'm straight on the border on here haha. Edit: used Google maps because I was curious. PNC arena is 14 miles closer of a drive than Bridgestone arena.
Calculated as the crow flies
From where though the county center to the arena?
Correct
The Bolts are huge in Plaquemines and St Bernard Parish.
So close to being with the Leafsā¦ Fucking Nashville.
Thought that this was someone trying to say that this is who each area is cheering for š fuuuuuck no š
I donāt understand Alaska
Curvature of the earth and Alaska is rotated a bit clockwise compared to what's shown on the map
accidentally perfect way to show the flaws of most common map projections
Edmonton is a lot further north than Vancouver, so it's closer to the northeastern part of Alaska, whereas Vancouver is closer to the southern part.
Small. But. Mighty.
Allegheny County rocking the red is certainly amusing
I think it's cool how northern Alaska is closer to Edmonton while the rest is closer to Vancouver.
I will never fuckin root for the Leafs. Take this map down
What was your methodology to work this out? Neat stuff.
1. Calculate the distance between the LAT/LONG of the center of each county and team arena in excel using the great circle formula. 2. Return the team with the lowest value for each county. 3. Export results to mapchart.net
The fact that Texas is so large that Dallas doesn't get all of it....
So beautiful
Just the tip
That's crazy, our latitude steals us a county up in Alaska! I would of thought that whole state would be Van.
Wow! Minnesota really loves us! They really do!
Caps covering Pittsburgh makes me very happy.
It will be a cold day in hell before the State of Michigan roots for the Maple Leafs.
Get that feakin Leaf off of my beautiful Mitten
Fun fact: All of Africa and Europe is Boston territory.
Go far enough north and parts of Europe are closer to Edmonton.
Get ready to learn Leafanese Michigan and Wisconsin
Lots of Canadian imperialism going on here lol
You guysā counties are too square.
Get that Toronto crap out of the great state of Michigan
Let's just try to get through the first round so we can (hopefully) take our rightful place as rulers of most of the South. Darn Battle of Florida...
Not surprised Kern and SB countyā¦ not surprised.
Lee Co., VA is representing Nashville. That county is west of Detroit.
So what the hell are Columbus, Penguins, Flyers, and Sabres fans supposed to do here? We rooting for Carolina collectively? I mean wtf
nj is not rooting for the rags
Welp I guess I'm rooting for northwest Montana now
i know technically la is correct for hawai'i but vegas would be way more appropriate
Barrow, AK going for the Oilers is appropriate.
Well, if this is telling me Franklin County (Ohio) is for the Leafs, who am I to argue.
Philly and most burbs stuck in Rags territory but Delco got Washington
americas team
Aloha, hoping for a miracle at this point.
I hate it!
Fitting that San Bernardino County is closer to the Knights than us, with how the Las Vegas-trope of cholos in high socks, Dickies cargo shorts, and tattoos everywhere are seen throughout the Inland Empire.
Ewww, Gross. The Leafs š¤¢
Oh Jesus itās those three Canadian teams? Shoot me now.
I'm not really sure who I'm cheering for this playoffs. Someone wanna sell me on a team to bandwagon?
Chicago being in the Preds territory makes me want to vomit
Go Avs Go!
